To your imagine: Funchal, the city of Madeira, stretches out on vast slopes of high mountains falling down to the Atlantic ocean. You can see it well on my pictures in some previous posts devoted to my memories of this beautiful mountainous island.

The Fig.3: Next specimens of conchs, corals and sponges. There is a symbol prohibiting to take
shots of the displayed natural things to the right on this picture. Though I photographed it I
did not see it. The small museum of the natural sciences in the Funchal´s Botanic Garden. Madeira,

In fact, there were three areas devoted to botany in Funchal. Coincidentally, they all sat higher in a slope above our apartment. The Botany park (I have already written about it) has taken the highest position. The second large stair under the previous has been occupied by the classic Botanical Garden and the third stair lower has been something like an Eden of the tropical tree ferns to me. Gradually we visited to all the three places covered with the tropical and subtropical flora due to the intellectual spirit of the Madeira ´s islanders.

Well, this time let´s stop at a small house standing in the classic Botanic Garden (the second stair from up to down in my description) not too far behind its main entrance. Now you have an unique chance to step into its inner rooms together with me because I am going to be your mediator.

The Fig.5: You can see that the glassy cases in the cupboards have covered a lot of very
interesting and beautiful natural things. The small museum of the natural sciences in the Funchal´s

The small house turned to be a small museum of the natural sciences. Its two or three rooms have covered a lot of natural specimens displayed in glassy cases. The collections have showed both the zoological and the botanic items. Also I noticed some fossilized items there. As soon as I found myself inside it was clear to me that I might do some photo-documentation of this highly interesting mausoleum where manifold samples of animals and plants of Madeira the island have been concentrated in mummified forms.

No wonder that the zoological items of the sea have occupied the biggest part. First I started photographing both the open and the closed glassy cases with various natural things without I would have guessed that I would have done something prohibited in the room to the right side from the entrance of the mausoleum. I did not omit to take some shots of a closed case with samples of dried plants. Mainly this room was devoted to the marine invertebrates. Also I recorded several posters depicting various ecological activities of local experts as well as amateur lovers of the Nature. I noticed various specimens of the fish in this room. Now I am not sure if I saw any beetles, butterflies and other species of the insects there. Mostly I concentrated on my photographing the displayed specimens. I had no time to examine separate specimens for a longer time. Well, if the specimens were in the memory of my smart phone then there would be a lot of time to study them in more detailed ways later in my home background. This has always been my strategy in the time limited situations.

The Fig.7: Some animal specimens have been installed in cylindrical tubes with labels. Each of the

When I was satisfied with my photo-hunts in the first room I turned myself to visit to the second room. Just I was going to step over to it but first I stopped to take a whole shot of the second room through its open enter. I could see that there were the biggest exhibits of manifold vertebrates including some cetaceans in the second room. I took one or two shots when suddenly I felt a light touch on my left side. I turned my head to a cause of the touch and I saw a small older woman standing by my left side. With no word she was pointing to the panel on my right side: TO PHOTOGRAPH IS PROHIBITED heralded the panel. "Sorry, I did not notice it", I replied with no her response because she was showing her back to me already and she was looking for other sinners disturbing their rules. Fortunately, all my photos taken before her warning remained hidden in my smart phone´s memory. Unfortunately, due to her resolute instruction I could not continue on in my original photographing as intensive as I could do it in the first room. This is why the two shots of the second room were last ones I could take in this remarkable small mausoleum of the natural sciences.

tohle vycpané zvíře druh zvaný fossa? vylíhlo se mi v mozku okamžitě. Neměl jsem čas hledat a
studovat jeho cedulku. Chystám se to zkusit zjistit v mé zoologické literatuře. Malé přírodovědné muzeum

Dear madam, I am very sorry. You watched the rooms of the small museum of the natural sciences in a very attentive way. As soon as you warned me I stopped photographing. Nevertheless, I could take some photos of the inner rooms before than you noticed my bad behavior. My only goal why I publish the several photos taken in your remarkable mausoleum of the natural sciences has been to appreciate its qualities as well as the efforts of your naturalists. I have been an amateur biologist and when I saw all the beauty of the displayed exhibits simply I could not help myself. I apologize you once again. You have done your job very well.

Sbírky předváděly zoologické i botanické položky.

Madeira in My Memories

A Tasty and Interesting Fish on A Plate

We took this strange looking fish in one of many restaurants in the harbor of Funchal the city. It was after my second sea trip connected with a chance to observe some cetaceans. But now I am not going to depict this great experience. I will come back to this topic in some of next posts within my blog.

When we left our twin ship we were hungry. We ate nothing in the course of the sea trip. To find a food source was no problem because we were walking the pier lined with almost continuous chain of restaurants. Soon we anchored in a roofed garden of one of them. Within a moment a waiter stood at our table. We asked him for a menu as well as for something to drink. One glass of lemonade to Vendy (our driver) and two glasses of beer to me and Robert. While the waiter disappeared in the inner part of the restaurant to fulfill our demands, a woman stepped to our table. She did not come with her hands empty. Holding a wide metal dish in her hands she was offering its contents to us. "The fresh fish, just we got them. This species is very tasty. Would not you like having them?" We agreed with her offering.

The fish was tasty really. The sea trip was finished in a stylish way. I think that the fish was the gilt-head (sea) bream. According to The Wikipedia it names Sparus aurata in Latin, it belonged to Sparidae the family. I got two whole fish including their heads on my plate. I was attracted with their flat teeth adapted to crushing hard morsels. The teeth resisted to a thermal process with no damage. I decided to take one or two shots of the two fried fish before than they vanished in my inner man (naturally, with no heads, tails, bones and fins!). Here are their three photos.

V rukou držela širokou kovovou mísu a nabízela nám její obsah.

As soon as our group occupied its sits the low motor boat started its engine and slowly it began to operate from the inner harbor. As we were leaving the channel 9 we were passing by a group of young kayakers as you can see on my picture. They were returning to the harbor. There were the gigantic cliffs of the coast in front of our boat´s nose and therefore the boat turned it to the left behind the gate. It ceased turning to the left till its nose pointed to the wide sea. Then the captain, steerer and guider in one person sitting in his lifted cabin on the rear triggered the engine at full turns and the boat started up fast to its goal somewhere at a distance of the dark blue and green mildly waving plain of the Atlantic ocean.

The sea was kind and peaceful, our boat had to overcome no big waves. The mountainous coast behind the boat´s rear was becoming smaller and smaller. I was curious about if it disappeared completely but a while later the boat changed its direction turning its larboard in parallel with now distant fuzzy coastline still at our sight and the captain turned the engine off.

He had a good reason to do it because we found ourselves in the zone where some cetaceans liked to stay. Indeed, using a microphone the captain woke us to every sign of their presence. He did it both in English and in Spanish. I was a bad luck a bit because my sit was at the starboard and the first back fins began emerging from water at the larboard where my view was screened by my neighbour´s head and body as well as by figures sitting in front of me. My neighbour was a Germany man with his two children sitting on two sits before us. They were very noisy and they welcomed every emerged back fin with calls and shrieks, their bodies did not cease changing their positions thus making my attempts to see something or to take a sensational shot of the unique spectacle more difficult.

On our way from the coast to the whales and dolphins zone I tested my abilities to photograph and to take audio-video recordings by my smart phone on the boat in full operation. As you can see on my pictures from this phase of our sea trip my tests proved that I could manage it well. Unfortunately, the biggest problem turned to be the heads and bodies of my attendants blocking my view of the sea surface to the left. While the boat was skimming the sea surface fast with water sprays alongside its sides I had to hold my smart phone with my hands in a very firm way because otherwise the strong air resistance would have teared it out of my clasp and its new owner might have become some of the intelligent marine mammals.

category of the dolphins, i.e. to the smaller cetaceans. Los Gigantes, Tenerife,on August 2016.

I should not omit a remark of my inner man. It bore the tender rocking of the Atlantic ocean with no protests. The influence of rocking was hardly apparent when the boat was in operation. When it stopped its rising up and down on the sea waves became stronger but with no negative influences on my balance system both in the cerebellum and in the inner ear. At least I could concentrate on the fascinating creatures, on their observation and on some attempts to take a shot or two of them fully.

Staying at the whales and dolphins zone from time to time our captain removed the boat to a next place and he turned the engine off again. He always did it when observed animals disappeared. As soon as they submerged you could not be certain if they emerged in the same place of the sea surface. The most often I could see their back fins or parts of their backs. To see their heads or tails emerged above the surface was much rarer. I could see these phases of their motions in the sea element but I could not to photograph them. To my great regret my smaller cetaceans never jumped up out of the sea water. Neither they approached to our boat, they always kept their safety distance from us.

My efforts to photograph them were maximal. Unfortunately, the best moments lasted for a while. The cetaceans did not wait for my photographing. Before than I found a good rift among heads of my attendants, either they submerged or they showed a back or a fin above the surface only. I tried to catch them better with a help of the audio video recording. When my view was free and I could aim the camera of my smart phone at the sea surface then I clicked on the audio/video regime and I did not ceased recording the empty sea surface. I hoped that the longer I would record the empty sea the more probability would be to catch the cetaceans at their first emerges with a chance to get some better shots of their bodies above the sea water. Unfortunately, this assumption turned to be wrong. This trap did not collapse. I got no shots of jumping dolphins, no shots of their vertical emerges, no shots of the bigger parts of their bodies above water.

I did not give it up to last moments. While the other tourists were sitting on their sits I was standing with the viewer of my smart phone aimed at the empty sea surface and recording it. But no cetacean emerged. Suddenly I heard our captain´s voice amplified by his microphone: "Sit down please, sit down please....." I realized that his command belonged to me and I sat myself obediently. Our whales and dolphins watching was over. We had to come back to the harbor because one hour lasting trip could not be prolonged.

There was yet one short stop in the course of our return to the harbor. The captain stopped his boat off the high rocky cliffs. There was a near stony platform with two or three small boats on it in front of us. The platform was closed between the steep and tall cliffs. A near pass was climbing up above the platform and it was disappearing higher in the rocks. The captain told us that this small platform with boats belonged to Masca the settlement laying out of our sights higher above our heads. As my fateful readers have already known an hour or two later we arrived at Masca by a taxi cab on our way to the Oldest Dragon Tree.

Well, with vertical rocky walls falling down to the sea at the larboard and with the wide sea at the starboard slowly our boat was coming back to the harbor. Look at several photos I took in the last phase of our return.

Na mořských vlnách (II)

Naše turistická skupina vystřídala v člunu předešlou. Neseděli jsme s Robertem pohromadě. Vstoupil jsem na palubu později než on a místo vedle něj už obsadil někdo jiný. Musel jsem se usadit blíže zádi.

Jakmile naše skupina zaujala svá místa, nízký motorový člun nastartoval motor a zvolna počal manévrovat z vnitřního přístavu. Vraceli se do přístavu. Před přídí našeho člunu byly gigantické útesy pobřeží, a proto ji člun stočil za propustí doleva.

The Fig.15: Our touristic group are leaving the boat. We are in the harbor again.

Dělal to anglicky i španělsky. Byli velmi hluční a každou vynořenou hřbetní ploutev vítali výkřiky a jekotem, jejich těla neustávala měnit pozice, čímž mi více znesnadňovala něco vidět či udělat nějaký senzační záběr té jedinečné podívané.

Udělal to vždy, když pozorovaná zvířata zmizela.

Naše pozorování velryb a delfínů skončilo.

To reach Los Gigantes, a small port laying at the south west coast of the island, we had to cover a long way by a taxi cab from our northern base in Santa de la Cruize. Indeed, you can look at the distance on a map of Tenerife.

The Fig.3: I photographed this low tree (in culture) in several places of Tenerife. This one in
flower decorated the place of our arrival at Los Gigantes. I identified it at home only. According
to a botanic guider devoted to the tropical plants now I have known that it is Thevetia peruviana of
Apocynaceae the family. Among various names also this species is called the yellow oleander by the

Our taxi driver stopped his car in a slanted section of a road above the sea. Robert payed to him and we got out. There were manifold buildings around us in a steep slope. The road continued on going down to the own port. Mostly the surrounding buildings were various hotels or restaurants documenting a typical touristic character of the town. While we were standing there and looking around the surroundings I was taking my first shots of the place.

According to the officer´s instructions we stepped down to the harbor. There were two offices offering sea trips with whales watching before an enter into the own harbor. They adjoined each other. They seemed to be a very promising guarantee. Robert entered the bigger of them and a moment later he returned with bought tickets saying to me that we had a free hour to the start of our sea trip.

The harbor was inner, it was separated from the free sea. There were a lot of anchored smaller ships or boats in it. We were killing a free time by wandering about it and of course, I did not forget to photograph. In the end of the free hour we sat in a garden of a restaurant lining one of the harbor´s edges. We took a drink. A glass of beer to Robert and a cup of coffee to me. While we were drinking our drinks and smoking our cigarettes there were a lot of teaming thoughts in my head. It was my first sea trip in my life. Would my inner man bear all the rocking on the sea waves? Would I see at least a piece of a body of any cetacean? And if yes, would I be able to photograph it? And would I see one species or more ones? What would a sort of a ship be on which board we would spend our one hour lasting sea trip?  Would it be bigger than the small vessels in the harbor? The answers to all these questions were nearing to me with every more minute. When it was high time to us Robert payed for the drinks, we visited to toilets and then we started walking to the place of our embarkation.

Robert mu zaplatil a vystoupili jsme. Kol nás ve strmém svahu byly rozmanité budovy. Silnice se dál svažovala do vlastního přístavu. Okolní budovy byly vesměs hotely a restaurace dokládající typický turistický charakter městečka.

A pokud ano, budu schopen ho vyfotit?
