What I saw in Porto Moniz

Porto Moniz is a summer resort laying on the North West coast of Madeira the Island. What are my memories of the place? Did I notice anything strange, interesting or remarkable there?

The Fig.2: A view of the lava labyrinth. Cliffs separated by sea water are interconnected with
foot bridges. The more difficult places of the labyrinth are equipped with ropes. You can make

First of all I would say that you can´t omit its lava cliffs forming a fantastic labyrinth. You can take a walk through it, you can enjoy its various corners, you can admire bizarre faces of lava rocks and you can guess what they could resemble to you.

There are places among the lava cliffs where you can put your clothes off and take a bathing, you can observe numerous local lizards occupying sunny niches of the lava rocks.

You can find a restaurant in the center of the lava labyrinth. A smaller fort is a part of this complex. Separated from this complex is a tower like building standing on a very top of a cliff further off the coast. I have not known its purpose so far. It is accessible by a boat only. The place would be ideal to meditate. I can imagine a monastery on the top of the rock surrounded by the sea. But the building seems to be no historic matter. It looks young. At least this was what I could recognize at a distance.

The best look at the tower on the top of the rock was from the smaller fort´s open platforms. I could see that the smaller fort was in a gradual recovery. I would say that it was determined to military and marine purposes. Today it has served as a touristic attraction.

As panels informed us there was a chance to visit to a local sea aquarium inside the fort. But we did not make use of this offer.

The smaller fort had two open circular platforms higher above the sea. They were equipped with warning posts.

Naturally, I was interested in plants growing in this terrain. Though mostly the lava rocks are not covered with a vegetation in a dense way I registered some species occurring within the lava labyrinth. I took shots of the most often growing plants there. In the mean time their species determinations have been a matter of following studies. This is why I can speculate about them only and here I am doing it at the rough level of the plant families in texts under their pictures.

I saw no big ships anchoring in the small harbor of this summer resort. There were a few of small boats both on water and on/at moles within the harbor. According to my experiences Madeira has been a favorite destination of the older people. I met them very often and Porto Moniz was no exception of this rule. I understand the heliport installed in the harbor just in a relationship to the higher concentration of the older people. Their more often health problems can demand fast helps. I don´t think that the reason for to built the heliport was caused by the more frequent injuries in the course of walks through the lava labyrinth.

The building behind the restaurant in the heart of the lava labyrinth offers a permanent exposition called From The Earth to The Sea but we did not visit to it. Nevertheless, this slogan on the red brown panel attached to the building´s wall is in a harmony with my impressions of this interesting, peaceful and beautiful place I could visit to in Madeira.

Porto Moniz je letovisko, které leží na SZ pobřeží ostrova Madeiry. Jaké jsou mé vzpomínky na tohle místo? Všiml jsem si tam něčeho zvláštního, zajímavého či pozoruhodného?

Především bych řekl, že nemůžete pominout jeho lávové útesy, které vytvářejí fantastický labyrint. Můžete se jím procházet, můžete si vychutnávat různá jeho místa, můžete obdivovat bizarní stěny lávových skal a můžete hádat, co by vám mohly připomínat.

Mezi lávovými útesy existují místa, kde si můžete svléknout šaty a koupat se, můžete pozorovat početné místní ještěrky, které okupují slunečné niky lávových skalisek.

Uprostřed lávového bludiště můžete najít restauraci. Součástí tohoto komplexu je malá pevnost. Oddělena od tohoto komplexu je věžovitá stavba, která stojí na samém vršku jednoho útesu dále od pobřeží. Dodnes její účel neznám. Je přístupná pouze člunem. Místo by bylo ideální k meditacím. Umím si na vrcholu té skály obklopené mořem představit nějaký klášter. Avšak zdá se, že stavba není žádnou historickou záležitostí. Vyhlíží mladě. Alespoň, co jsem na dálku mohl rozpoznat.

Nejlepší pohled na věž na vrcholu skály byl z otevřených plošin pevnůstky. Viděl jsem, že pevnůstka je v postupné renovaci. Řekl bych, že byla určena k vojenským a námořním účelům. Dnes slouží jako turistická atrakce.

Jak nás tabule informovaly, uvnitř pevnůstky byla možnost navštívit místní mořské akvárium. Ale my tuto nabídku nevyužili. Pevnůstka měla výše nad mořem dvě otevřené kruhové plošiny. Byly vybaveny hláskami.

The Fig.19: Here you can see that the surface of the lava rocks is covered with a lichen. I had
no time to examine the pale grey plant on the picture for a longer time. I have tried to identify
 it but I have still not succeeded in it. Porto Moniz, Madeira, on October 2016.

tohle její přirozený vzhled nebo jen suché pozůstatky. Bohužel, nemohl jsem pořídit více fotek

Zajímal jsem se přirozeně o rostliny rostoucí v tomto terénu. I když lávová skaliska neporůstá vegetace hustě, zaznamenal jsem nějaké druhy, které se v lávovém labyrintu vyskytují. Pořídil jsem obrázky rostlin, které tam rostou nejčastěji. Jejich druhové určení je prozatím věcí dalšího studia. Proto o nich mohu pouze spekulovat a zde to činím na hrubé úrovni rostlinných čeledí v textech pod obrázky.

Žádné velké lodě kotvící v malém přístavu tohoto letoviska jsem neviděl. V přístavu bylo nemnoho člunů na vodě i na molech popř. při nich. Podle mých zkušeností je Madeira oblíbenou destinací starších lidí. Potkával jsem je často a Porto Moniz nebylo žádnou výjimkou z pravidla. Heliport v přístavu chápu právě ve vztahu k vyšší koncentraci starších lidí. Jejich častější zdravotní problémy mohou vyžadovat rychlou pomoc. Nedomnívám se, že výstavbu heliportu způsobila častější zranění během procházek lávovým labyrintem.

Budova za restaurací v srdci lávového bludiště nabízí stálou expozici nazvanou Od Země Moři, ale nenavštívili jsme ji. Nicméně, tento slogan na červenohnědé tabulce upevněné ke zdi budovy je v souladu s mými dojmy z tohoto zajímavého, mírumilovného a krásného místa, které jsem mohl navštívit.
