In The Nirvana

The place was not so far from the vanilla farm. We drove a field path to it. In the end of the drive Venda had to go a short steeper slant down and the field path finished up under it. We found ourselves at the sea and there was a complex of several low buildings including an empty frame of an entrance with no door in front of us. This complex blocked any next way forward.

At the first glance we could see that the place had a religious purpose. All the buildings and the frame of the entrance were painted in a very colorful way and decorated with a lot of various strange small figures and animals in various colors, too. I think that all the complex was made of a woody material. Several coco palms grew in the open internal room of the complex.

The sound of our car´s motor elicited no response. The place remained silent and no man stepped outdoor from the buildings. The holy stand occupied a narrow belt between the Indian Ocean and a rocky wall covered with a dense vegetation. There were simple woody sittings before the buildings. You could sit down there, you could look at the ocean and you could concentrate on a meditation.

Again I noticed strings of beads or narrow strips of a fabric suspended around some tree trunks in the surrounding vegetation. Also small altars were a part of the religious complex or at least the things resembled something like that to me.

A friend of my son had visited to this place a time before us at his stay at the island and he had been so lucky that he had met a local kind of the chameleon. Unfortunately, despite my great efforts to find some specimen in the surroundings of the holy place was in vain. Despite the fact that the zoological sources have thought its occurrence in the island to be abundant we saw no specimen during our stay at Reunion. Also they have said that you may encounter on the chameleon in some urban parts but this was not our case.

The chameleon was not searched out but we could test the fresh taste of coco milk freely. The coco palms were fruitful and some fallen coco nuts were laying under them. I did not participate in the test because while my partners were breaking one of the coco nuts I continued on in my searching for the chameleon. It was our first and last chance to try drinking coco milk from a coco nut picked up from the ground freely. My partners felt to be refreshed. Something what you can´t experience in my country! You can buy a coco nut whenever you want to do it but you can´t pick it up from the ground under its maternal palm. You can´t break it rightly in the place so that you could refresh yourself with its delicious milk. This is why I mean this episode.

We passed by many various Buddhist or Hindu temples during our drives throughout the island but we never stopped to examine them in a more detailed way. This was the only exception. No big temple stood in this remote place. The colorful decorations were fascinating to me. So many sharp colors covering all the building elements of the complex in a mosaic like combinations or patterns evoked a work of a naive child or a painting of an abstract painter. Really, the place´s atmosphere was very meditative.

As I have already written in some previous posts of my narration I have not been familiar with the building and decorating styles concerning both the Buddhist religion and the Hindu one. I have not been able to tell one from another so far. Despite this I guess that this sacred place has been devoted to the Buddha rather than to the Hindu gods.

V Nirváně

Místo nebylo tak daleko od vanilkové farmy. Jeli jsme k němu polní cestou. V závěru jízdy musel Venda sjet krátký strmější svah a polní cesta pod ním končila. Ocitli jsme se u moře a před námi byl komplex nízkých budov včetně prázdného rámu vstupu bez dveří. Tento komplex blokoval jakoukoliv další cestu kupředu.

Na první pohled jsme mohli vidět, že místo má nějaký náboženský účel. Všechny budovy a rám vstupu byly pomalovány velmi pestrobarevně a zdobeny spoustou rozmanitých podivných figurek a zvířat rovněž v rozmanitých barvách. Myslím, že celý komplex byl vyroben z nějakého dřevěného materiálu. Ve vnitřním otevřeném prostoru komplexu rostlo několik kokosových palem.

Zvuk motoru našeho auta nevyvolal žádnou odezvu. Místo zůstávalo tiché a z budov ven nevyšel žádný člověk. Svatý stánek zabíral úzký pás mezi Indickým oceánem a skalní stěnou porostlou hustou vegetací. Před budovami byla prostá dřevěná sezení. Mohli jste se tam posadit, mohli jste se dívat na oceán a mohli jste se soustředit na nějakou meditaci.

Opět jsem si povšimnul korálků či úzkých pruhů nějaké látky zavěšených kolem některých stromových kmenů v okolní vegetaci. Součástí náboženského komplexu byly také malé oltáře či mi ty věci něco takového alespoň připomínaly.

Jeden synův přítel navštívil tohle místo při svém pobytu na ostrově před námi a měl tu kliku, že potkal místní druh chameleona. Bohužel, moje velké úsilí najít nějaký exemplář v okolí svatého místa bylo marné. Navzdory faktu, že zoologické zdroje považují jeho výskyt na ostrově za hojný, během pobytu na Reunionu jsme žádný exemplář nespatřili. Říká se, že snad můžete na chameleona natrefit také v některých městských částech, ale tohle nebyl náš případ.

z prostých stavebních prvků či dílů. Žlutá barva je dominantní. Hlavice sloupů
zdobí ptačí motivy. V textu nejsem přesný, protože když jsem psal o vstupu,
popsal jsem ho jako rám. Paměť zkreslila skutečnost. Tohle foto ukazuje vstup
v pravé podobě. Dobrý příklad faktu, že čerpat jen ze vzpomínek vede ke

The Fig.26: This picture documents that the entrance into the Nirvana´s areal
was blocked by two ways. The field path was blocked by a chain between two
columns and the rest of the room was blocked by more three columns. Our
car is parking at the very boundary of the Nirvana. Reunion, the North West

způsoby. Polní cestu blokoval řetěz mezi dvěma sloupy a zbytek prostoru byl
blokován dalšími třemi sloupy. Naše auto parkuje na samé hranici Nirvány.

Chameleon vypátrán nebyl, ale mohli jsme si svobodně vyzkoušet čerstvou chuť kokosového mléka. Kokosové palmy byly plodné a nějaké spadané ořechy ležely pod nimi. Já se na tom testu nepodílel, protože, zatímco moji parťáci rozbíjeli jeden z ořechů, pokračoval jsem v pátrání po chameleonovi. Byla to naše první a poslední příležitost zkusit si vypít kokosové mléko z ořechu sebraného volně ze země. Parťáci se cítili osvěženi. Něco, co v mé zemi zažít nemůžete! Můžete si kokosový ořech koupit kdykoliv chcete, ale nemůžete si ho sebrat ze země pod mateřskou palmou. Nemůžete si ho rozbít rovnou na místě, abyste se mohli osvěžit jeho lahodným mlékem. Proto tuhle epizodu zmiňuji.

Projížděli jsme kolem mnoha budhistických či hinduistických chrámů během jízd po ostrově, ale nikdy jsme nezastavili, abychom si je podrobněji prohlédli. Tohle byla jediná výjimka. Na tomto odlehlém místě žádný velký chrám nestál. Pestrobarevné ozdoby mě fascinovaly. Tolik ostrých barev, jež pokrývaly všechny prvky komplexu v jakýchsi mozaikových kombinacích či vzorech evokovalo práci naivního děcka nebo malbu abstraktního malíře. Atmosféra místa byla opravdu meditativní.

Jak už jsem napsal v některých předešlých postech svého vyprávění, nejsem zběhlý ve stavebních a zdobných stylech, jež se týkají budhistického a hinduistického náboženství. Až dosud neumím rozlišit jedno od druhého. Vzdor tomu hádám, že tohle posvátné místo je zasvěceno spíše Budhovi než bohům hinduistickým.
