Mr. Little Fir Like A Christmas Tree
or Let´s Be Merry and Let´s Be Free

Mr. Little Fir wishes a Merry Christmas to you all living on this planet.

Maybe my drawing by itself inserted to this post could seem to be quite strange to you. Therefore allow me to explain its origin to you.
As a boy I lived in a different part of Prague, the capitol of Czech republic. There was a family among others in our house consisted of panels and its name was Jedlička´s family. Mr. Jedlička, the head of his family, has lived with his wife there till now. The same has held true of my sister living there through all her life.
Not a long time before my sister meant him in her e-mail to me. His name can be translated into English easily. It is a little fir in English. This was the first factor to my idea of the drawing ´cause the spruce, the fir and the pine are traditional possibilities for a role of the Christmas tree with us. The three conifers are the most often trees determined to be decorated on the Christmas Eve in my country.

The second inspiration to my drawing was the fact that today Mr. Jedlička has already been an old man using his stick. You see, his walking in his age has not been possible with any support.

Well, the third factor is in his appearance as I could observe it during my boyhood. The most marked part of his body has always been his egg like head. It has always been bald with only rests of hair above his ears. Also his head has always sat on his body in the same way as the heron has been doing it while it has been waiting for its prey and besides this impression has been accented with his stare. Whenever I met him I was waiting for the moment when his seemingly short hidden long neck would be shooting his head out of his coat to grab any unhappy victim. It never happened. Fortunately. In fact, unlike the heron´s long neck his one was and has been very short.

Well, somehow this Christmas, Mr. Little Fir and his lost youth were mixed together in my head like in a shaker. Just this mix gave a birth to my drawing or to a Christmas swizzle called Mr. Little Fir like a Christmas tree or let´s be merry and let´s be free.

The Czech Version

Pan Jedlička jako vánoční stromek
aneb buďme veselí a buďme sví

Má kresba sama o sobě vložená do tohoto postu by se vám snad mohla zdát dost podivná. Proto mi dovolte, abych vám její původ vysvětlil.
Jako kluk jsem bydlel v jiné části Prahy, hlavním městě České republiky. V našem domě složeném z panelů byla mezi jinými jedna rodina a jmenovala se Jedličkovi. Pan Jedlička, hlava rodiny, tam žije s manželkou dodnes. Totéž platí o mé sestře, která tam bydlí celý život.
Před nedávnem se mi o něm sestra zmínila v e-mailu. Jeho jméno lze přeložit do angličtiny snadno. V angličtině to je Mr. Little Fir (pan Jedlička). Tohle byl první faktor k mé představě o kresbě, protože smrk, jedle a borovice jsou u nás tradiční možnosti pro roli vánočního stromku.Tyhle tři jehličnany jsou v mé zemi nejčastějšími stromy určenými k ozdobení na Štědrý den.

Druhou inspirací pro kresbu byla skutečnost, že dnes je už pan Jedlička stařec, který používá hůl. To víte, chůze v jeho věku není bez opory možná.

Třetí faktor spočívá v jeho vzhledu, který jsem mohl pozorovat v chlapeckém období. Nejnápadnější částí jeho těla byla vždycky hlava. Vždycky byl plešatý s pouhými zbytky vlasů nad ušima. Jeho vejcovitá hlava mu vždy seděla na těle stejně, jako to dělá volavka, zatímco čeká na kořist a navíc byl tento dojem zdůrazněn jeho upřeným pohledem. Kdykoliv jsem ho potkal, čekal jsem na okamžik, až mu zdánlivě krátký skrytý dlouhý krk vystřelí hlavu z kabátu, aby popadl nějakou nešťastnou oběť. Nikdy se to nestalo. Naštěstí. Ve skutečnosti, ho měl a má na rozdíl od volavčího krku velmi krátký.

Tyhle Vánoce, pan Jedlička a jeho ztracené mládí se mi v hlavě jaksi smíchaly dohromady jako v šejkru. Právě tahle směs dala vzniknout mé kresbě či vánočnímu koktejlu nazvanému pan Jedlička jako vánoční stromek aneb buďme veselí a buďme sví.
