My Memories of Tenerife

How I Encountered The Octopus Tree

At the present times my stay at work has been prevailing (a sad message to me). I have been at work more than at home. No wonder then that the time for my posts have been shorter than it might be and this has been why my latest post has been no long story.

This memory corresponds with our visit of one of the black beaches. While Robert (my son) was sitting under an outdoor roofed garden of a restaurant I was searching in our immediate surroundings with my smart phone ready to photograph.

The Fig.3: Scheffleria actinophylla is an imigrant thanks to the man coming from
far Papua New Guinea and Australia. As you can see apparently it has been prosperous in Tenerife.

Suddenly I noticed a bizarre looking tree of which shots are accompanying this text. It grew together with other trees and plants in a park nearby the beach. I did not know its name but a time later I learnt its name and more about it at my home background with a solid botanic literature. The Englishmen call it the Octopus Tree or the Umbrella Tree. And as I am looking at my photos I can confirm the aptness of these names.

same holds good for its leafy arrangement. Perhaps hence the English name for this tree: The Octopus

Obr.4: Mladší květenství Schefflery paprskolisté (S. actinophylla) mohou připomínat měkkýše s více
rameny. Totéž platí o jejím uspořádání listů. Možná odtud anglické jméno The Octopus Tree (v mé
české interpretaci "chobotničník"). Tenerife, srpen 2016. Pořízeno mým chytrým mobilem.

Mé vzpomínky na Tenerife

Jak jsem potkal chobotničník

V současnosti převládá můj pobyt v práci (pro mne smutná zpráva). Jsem v práci víc než doma. Není tedy divu, že čas na mé posty je kratší než by snad být mohl, a proto můj nový post není dlouhý příběh.

Tahle vzpomínka se vztahuje k naší návštěvě jedné z černých pláží. Zatímco Robert (můj syn) seděl pod venkovní zastřešenou zahrádkou restaurantu, já jsem pátral po bezprostředním okolí s chytrým mobilem připraveným k focení.

Pojednou jsem si všiml bizarně vyhlížejícího stromu, jehož snímky tento text doprovázejí. Rostl spolu s jinými stromy a rostlinami v parku poblíž pláže. Neznal jsem jeho jméno, ale o nějaký čas později jsem jeho jméno a více o něm zjistil v domácím zázemí se solidní botanickou literaturou. Angličané mu říkají The Octopus Tree (odtud mé "chobotničník") nebo The Umbrella Tree (něco jako "deštníkovec"). A jak se na své fotky dívám, mohu výstižnost těch názvů potvrdit.
