This post includes a serial of photos ranging from the very beginnings of my Cymbi´s flowering up to the beginnings of the first symptoms of its flowering away. The more detailed remarks you can find under separate photos.

The English Version

A Visit of A Rocky Highlands with Often Gray/White
Outcrops in the Sicilian Inland

The Fig.1: I cought this view of Sorento the town on the opposite rocky hill from a place
alongside the road nearby the gate to the natural reserve with its greatest attraction  - the
necropolis. The soil was dried out and stony. Most of the local plants were going away at the
beginning of the upcoming fall. Sicily, nearby a gate to the natural reserve in the rocky

Our reason for a visit of this place was an information of an ancient necropolis hidden in a labyrinth of valleys and rocky hills with often gray/white outcrops. The dead were put into vertical and massive walls of the rocky hills in the oldest times of the island in this part of the inland. I know neither the reasons for this habit nor if this was a local matter or a common way how to treat with corpses.

To reach the destination our Jeep left the areal of Primasole Beach and it started up going a highway at the direction of Syracuse but about in a half of this way Vendy took a right turn and the car started climbing a narrow road up toward the rocky inland. Our first stop was in a top section of the town named Sorento stretching out on both a top and slopes of a long rocky hill. It was a short stop only, I recall there was a place devoted to some Saint on the opposite side of the road. A smaller statue of the Saint was behind a glass of a stony monument. I got out of the car for a while to find an intimate place to make water. The Saint was kind to me because I found a good niche for my need not so far under his or her monument in a bushy terrain next to the road. Then we continued in our way on.

With no next stop we passed through the town slowly. In fact we were going its slanted streets and small squares down till we reached its end and then we continued on going a steep road with a lot of turns to a very bottom of a valley at the foot of the rocky hill. Then our car started to climb the road up again and as we were getting higher and higher we could enjoy a lot of beautiful views of Sorento the town with its houses dispersed throughout the top parts of the hill we left behind our backs a short time before. Vendy stopped the car in a place of the climbing so that I could get out and to take some photos of the opposite hill as well as the surrounding landscape. This short stop was last before the goal of our way.

Several minutes later we arrived at the place. The road ended up here. We could see a gate in its end. Vendy parked the car next to the road nearby the gate. I noticed two info panels alongside the road to the left. Unfortunately, texts on them were written in Italy only. After a pause for a cigarette we started going to the gate. It was closed and we could see a small woody house standing next to a field path to the left about five or ten meters distant from the gate. In that time we were the only visitors of the place. The small house seemed to be abandoned. A rusty and shabby door of the gate was closed. Robert tried to open it. It was not locked. We were going to enter already but suddenly a man came out of the small house and he was suggesting with his gestures to us to leave the place. We understood that the areal of this natural reserve including the necropolis was forbidden to us for that day.

We decided to stay at our car´s surroundings for a while. While Robert and Vendy were preparing my drone for an air exploration I was examining a terrain alongside the road. Karel was smoking and watching prepares of the drone to fly up. The closed entrance into the natural reserve was at our continuous sight. We spent about thirty or forty five minutes there. In the course of the time we registered two or three cars coming to the gate. Apparently tourists interesting in sightseeing of the natural reserve and its greatest attraction - the necropolis. But their attempts to visit to the fenced area were finished by the watcher resolutely in the same way as our attempt was refused. Then the tourists got in their cars and went away immediately. At least we could see that the ban held true for everybody.

The weather was pleasant, mostly it was sunny with transient white clouds coming across the blue sky and an absolute absence of a wind ensured a safety fly of the Flying Tarantula (my nickname for my drone).

As usual, I was interested in the local flora growing alongside the road. I tried to pay my attention to all the living beings but with an exception for two or three butterflies I glanced for moments so short so that I could catch their pictures my photo collection from this place included some plant species exclusively.

My short floral exploration of the place suggested a very interesting composition of the local flora though the vegetation phase of many plants was over already. Despite this fact and as you can see on my photos the beauty of the dry samples is comparable with the one of the species alive fully. Interestingly, I registered no ferns in crevices of the lower stony barriers next to the road. In fact I met no fern in the course of our stay at Sicily. Maybe I never found myself in the right places with their occurrence or if yes then I could omit them. I mean this fact because my experience with the ferns was always positive and abundant during my visits of previous islands (i.e. Madeira, Corsica and Tenerife the biggest island of the Canary Islands).

Naším důvodem pro návštěvu tohoto místa byla informace o starobylé nekropoli skryté v bludišti údolí a skalnatých pahorků s častými výstupy šedobílé horniny. V této části vnitrozemí se mrtví ukládali do kolmých a masivních stěn skalnatých pahorků v nejstarších dobách ostrova. Neznám důvody toho zvyku, ani to, zda šlo o místní záležitost nebo o obecný způsob, jak nakládat s mrtvolami.

K dosažení této destinace opustil náš džíp areál Primasole Beach a vyrazil po dálnici ve směru Syrakus, ale asi v polovině cesty Venda odbočil vpravo a auto začalo úzkou silnicí stoupat do skalnatého vnitrozemí. První zastávku jsme měli v nejvyšším úseku města Sorenta, které se prostírá na vrcholu a svazích táhlého skalnatého vrchu. Byla to jen krátká zastávka, vzpomínám si, že na protější straně silnice bylo místo zasvěcené nějakému Svatému. Za sklem kamenného pomníku byla soška toho Svatého. Na chvilku jsem z auta vystoupil, abych si našel nějaké intimní místo na odvodnění. Ten Svatý byl ke mně laskavý, protože jsem pro svou potřebu našel dobrou niku nedaleko pod jeho pomníkem v křovitém terénu vedle silnice. Pak jsme pokračovali v cestě.

Bez další zastávky jsme pomalu projeli městem. Vlastně jsme jeli jeho svažitými ulicemi a náměstíčky, dokud jsme nedojeli na jeho konec a poté jsme pokračovali strmou silnicí se spoustou zatáček na samé dno údolí na úpatí skalnatého vrchu. Pak auto zase začalo silnicí stoupat, a jak jsme stoupali výš a výš, mohli jsme si užívat mnoha výhledů na městečko Sorento s domy rozptýlenými po vrcholových částech pahorku, který jsme před krátkou dobou nechali za zády. V jednom místě stoupání Venda auto zastavil, abych mohl vystoupit a udělat si nějaké fotky protějšího kopce a také okolní krajiny. Tahle zastávka byla poslední před cílem naší cesty.

O několik minut později jsme dorazili na místo. Silnice tu končila. Na jejím konci jsme viděli bránu. Venda zaparkoval auto vedle silnice opodál brány. Podél silnice nalevo jsem si povšiml dvou info tabulí. Bohužel, texty na nich byly jen v italštině. Po přestávce na cigaretu jsme se rozešli k bráně. Byla zavřená a pět či deset metrů od brány jsme viděli dřevěný domek, který stál vedle polní pěšiny nalevo. V té době jsme byli jediní návštěvníci toho místa. Zdálo se, že domek je opuštěný. Rezavé a omšelé dveře brány byly zavřené. Robert je zkusil otevřít. Nebyly zamčené. Už jsme se chystali vejít, ale v tom z domku vyšel nějaký muž a gesty nám naznačoval, abychom místo opustili. Pochopili jsme, že areál této přírodní rezervace zahrnující nekropolis je nám toho dne zapovězen.

Rozhodli jsme se zůstat na chvíli v okolí auta. Zatímco Robert s Vendou připravovali mého drona na vzdušný průzkum, prohlížel jsem si terén podél silnice. Karel pokuřoval a sledoval přípravy drona na vzlet. Uzavřený vstup do přírodní rezervace jsme měli neustále v dohledu. Strávili jsme tam asi třicet nebo pětačtyřicet minut. Během té doby jsme zaznamenali pár aut, která přijížděla k bráně. Zjevně turisté, kteří se zajímali o prohlídku přírodní rezervace a její největší atrakci - nekropolis. Ale jejich pokusy navštívit oplocenou oblast ukončoval rezolutně hlídač stejně, jako byl zamítnut náš pokus. Poté turisté nasedli do aut a odjeli hned pryč. Alespoň jsme viděli, že zákaz platí pro všechny.

Počasí bylo příjemné s přechodnými bílými oblaky, které přecházely napříč modrou oblohou a absolutní absence větru zajišťovala bezpečný let Létající Tarantule (moje přezdívka pro drona).

Jako obvykle jsem se zajímal o místní květenu rostoucí podél silnice. Snažil jsem se věnovat pozornost všemu živému, ale až na pár motýlů, které jsem letmo zahlédl na okamžiky tak krátké, že jsem nedokázal zachytit jejich obrázky, moje foto sbírka z tohoto místa zahrnuje výhradně rostlinné druhy.

hluboká úzká údolí mezi pahorky nejsou na obrázku vidět. Ale to, co jsme vidět nemohli,

Můj krátký floristický průzkum místa naznačil velice zajímavou skladbu místní květeny, i když vegetační fáze mnoha rostlin už skončila. Vzdor tomu faktu, a jak můžete vidět na mých fotkách, krása suchých vzorků je plně srovnatelná se vzorky živými. Zajímavé je, že jsem vedle silnice nezaznamenal žádné kapradiny vyrůstající ze štěrbin nízkých kamenných tarasů. Během pobytu na Sicílii jsem se vlastně nesetkal s žádnou kapradinou. Možná jsem se nikdy nenacházel na správných místech s jejich výskytem, anebo, pokud ano, pak jsem je mohl přehlédnout. Tento fakt zmiňuji proto, že během návštěv předešlých ostrovů (tj. Madeiry, Korziky a Tenerife, největšího ostrova Kanárského souostroví) byla moje zkušenost s kapradinami pozitivní a bohatá.

Soon I learnt that the green barrier separating me from the river´s bank was not continuous. I could see side narrow ways going through the vegetation barrier. By them you could pass to the very edge of the bank and see the river. As soon as I noticed the first of them I used it. A couple of steps was enough and I stood up at the bank´s edge. I could overlook a wide section of the river including its opposite bank. A while before than I reached the bank I could glance a smaller water bird for a moment. It was floating on the water surface at my sight nearby the bank but a moment later it disappeared behind reeds to the left from the little path leading to the bank´s edge. It registered my advent and it disappeared.

I looked around the immediate surroundings. There was a fisher´s boat on water at the bank to the right. It was connected with the land with a help of a thick rope. It had a closed cabin suggesting it was a motor boat. It seemed to be lonely, older and out of often usage. It looked like shabby and it was calling for a lot of repairs.

I could see a similar picture in the end of each next side little way I visited to. The principle was following: I always went back to the field path leading alongside the green curtain, I covered several meters and again I took a turn to next side little way trodden down to the river´s bank. Always I found a boat resting either on the water surface or on the bank. No doubts, the side ways were used by fishers but I never met anybody of them. Mostly their little vessels were in so bad conditions that they seemed to be forgotten there by purpose, as if their owners lost any interest in fishery or as if they all went away suddenly with no chance to transport their boats to somewhere else or to demolish them and to take their remnants away. The lonely boats evoked the same impression as the unfinished or semi built up houses I could see everywhere where I found myself in Sicily. If some fishers practiced fishery actively there then they had to be ghosts.

The word "reeds" is too much common to satisfy a more curious man. We all can imagine tall slim stems with narrow long and pointed leaves under the expression. We all know their brown rusty spikes in maturity, some of us think them to be a tall grass and most of us would say that reeds grow at or rightly in shallow water sources. Well, that´s all true and substantial to the common idea. But if you feel to be a botanist or a naturalist a bit at least then you can´t be satisfied with such an idea. Especially, as soon as you are infected with a certain sum of the scientific knowledge, if your memory stores a lot of botanical names received by your continuous study of botanic textbooks then while you are in a field trip and you encounter on a herb similar to the reed your head can be in problems because you are aware of the fact that there are a lot of herbs similar to the reed but they differ from it and they belong to different families.

While I was standing on the narrow trodden path surrounded by the reeds both from the right and from the left side the wind was playing with their tall stems growing tightly together. They were rocking here and there and bracing each other in the wind making creaking or rattling sounds. I was alone there, nobody at my sight and from time to time the creaking sounds were so suggestive that I turned myself back to be sure that nobody was coming behind my back.

Unfortunately, slowly a fine raining started falling. At the beginning I did not care of it but in the course of a short time the rain became more and more intensive. I had to think of my back way to our rented house in The Summer Resort of Ghosts. Yet I managed to explore last side little way in the green barrier and again I could see two older fishery boats floating next to the bank. They were abandoned in the same way as all the previous one. I think this ghostly show of forgotten fishery boats had its next examples further alongside this bank but I went back to the sandy path leading in a parallel way with the green barrier and this time I took one of many narrow paths to my right side. I had to come across a wider band. It was covered with a lower vegetation in which one species of a herb dominated totally. You can see it on more pictures accompanying this post. The herb had its specific scent but I found no example close to the odor. This band covered with one dominant plant species stretched out between the green barrier and the lower bank. A while later I stood up on the lower bank, i.e. on the boundary between the natural reserve and the nobody´s zone, on the way leading back to The Summer Resort of Ghosts.
On my way back the raining was getting more intensive. No wonder then that entering the house I was wet to the skin.

Co jsem viděl v přírodní rezervaci
poblíž oblasti Primasole Beach (III)

Brzy jsem zjistil, že zelená bariéra, která mne odděluje od  říčního břehu, není souvislá. Viděl jsem, že skrze vegetační bariéru procházejí úzké průchody. Mohli jste jimi projít na samý okraj břehu a vidět řeku. Jakmile jsem si prvního z nich povšiml, použil jsem ho. Pár kroků stačilo a stanul jsem na okraji břehu. Mohl jsem přehlížet široký úsek řeky včetně protějšího břehu. Chvíli před dosažením břehu jsem na okamžik letmo zahlédl menšího vodního ptáka. Plul na hladině v mém dohledu poblíž břehu, ale po chvíli zmizel za rákosím nalevo od pěšinky vedoucí ke břehu. Zaznamenal můj příchod a zmizel.

Rozhlédl jsem se po bezprostředním okolí. U břehu napravo byl rybářský člun. S pevninou byl spojen pomocí silného lana. Měl uzavřenou kabinu, což naznačovalo, že to je motorový člun. Zdálo se, že je opuštěný, starý a mimo časté používání. Vypadal omšele a volal po spoustě oprav.

Na konci každé postranní cestičky, kterou jsem navštívil, mohl jsem vidět podobný obraz. Princip byl následující: Pokaždé jsem se vrátil na polní pěšinu vedoucí podél zelené opony, urazil jsem několik metrů a zase jsem zahnul na další postranní cestičku vyšlapanou ke břehu řeky. Vždycky jsem našel nějaký člun, který spočíval buď na hladině nebo na břehu. Nepochybně boční cesty používali rybáři, ale žádného z nich jsem nikdy nepotkal. Většinou byla jejich plavidla v tak špatném stavu, že se zdálo, že jsou tam záměrně zapomenuta, jako by jejich vlastníci ztratili jakýkoliv zájem o rybaření, anebo, jako by všichni náhle zemřeli bez možnosti přepravit čluny někam jinam nebo je demolovat a zbytky odvézt. Ty opuštěné čluny evokovaly tentýž dojem jako nedokončené či zpola postavené domy, které jsem mohl vidět všude, kde jsem se na Sicílii ocital. Pokud tam rybáři rybařili aktivně, pak to museli být duchové.

Výraz "rákosí" je příliš moc obecný, aby uspokojil zvědavějšího člověka. Všichni si pod tím výrazem umíme představit vysoká štíhlá stébla s úzkými dlouhými a zašpičatělými listy. Všichni známe jejich hnědá nebo rezavá květenství za zralosti, někteří z nás je pokládají za vysokou trávu a většina z nás by řekla, že rákosí roste u nebo přímo ve vodních zdrojích. Všechno to je pravda a dostatečné pro obecnou představu. Ale pokud se aspoň trochu cítíte jako botanik nebo přírodozpytec, pak takovou představou uspokojeni být nemůžete. Jakmile jste totiž infikováni určitou sumou vědeckých vědomostí, skladuje-li vaše paměť spoustu botanických názvů získaných nepřetržitým studiem botanických učebnic, pak, zatímco jste na polním výletě a narazíte na bylinu podobnou rákosu, vaše hlava může mít potíže, protože jste si vědomí faktu, že existuje spousta bylin podobných rákosu, ale ty se od něj liší a patří do jiných čeledí.

Zatímco jsem stál na úzké sešlapané pěšině obklopen rákosím z pravé i z levé strany, vítr si pohrával s jejich vysokými stonky, jež rostly těsně pospolu. Kolébaly se ve větru sem a tam a vzájemně se o sebe otíraly, vytvářeje skřípavé nebo chřestivé zvuky. Byl jsem tam sám, nikdo v mém dohledu a občas ty skřípavé zvuky byly tak sugestivní, že jsem se obracel dozadu, abych měl jistotu, že mi za zády nikdo nepřichází.

Bohužel, zvolna začalo mrholit. Zpočátku jsem se o to nestaral, ale během krátké doby intenzita deště zesilovala. Musel jsem pomýšlet na zpáteční cestu do pronajatého domu v Letovisku duchů. Ještě jsem zvládl prozkoumat poslední uličku v zelené bariéře a znovu jsem mohl vidět dva starší rybářské čluny vzplývající vedle břehu. Byly opuštěné stejně jako všechny předešlé. Myslím, že tahle přehlídka zapomenutých rybářských člunů měla své další příklady dále podél břehu, ale já se vrátil na písčitou pěšinu vedoucí paralelně se zelenou bariérou a tentokrát jsem se dal jednou z mnoha pěšinek po mé pravé straně. Musel jsem přejít širší pásmo. Porůstala ho nízká vegetace, v níž naprosto převládal jeden bylinný druh. Můžete ho vidět na více obrázcích, které tento post doprovázejí. Bylina měla specifickou vůni, ale žádný příklad blízký tomu odéru nenacházím. Pásmo porostlé jedním dominantním druhem rostliny se prostíralo mezi zelenou bariérou a nízkým valem. O chvíli později jsem na nízkém valu stanul, tj. na hranici mezi přírodní rezervací a zónou nikoho, na cestě vedoucí zpět do Letoviska duchů.
Na zpáteční cestě déšť zesiloval. Není tedy divu, že když jsem vcházel do domu, byl jsem promoklý na kůži.
