St. Denis the metropolis of the Reunion left no special impressions in my mind in a similar way as it was with other towns in the island. Our two boys had been accommodated in it during their first stay at the island. They had liked to visit to a simple canteen in the town. They told me and Karel about an old woman owning the canteen. They had nicknamed her for themselves. She had been a little grandma to them. Robert and Venda claimed that she was an excellent cooker. Always there had been several meals in her offer. The boys did not spent with great compliments as for the little grandma´s cooking art.

This was why one day while we were driving back to our base in St. Leu via St. Denis from some trip Venda did a short stop in a shabby street with the little grandma´s canteen. The boys wanted to see if the canteen and its owner were there yet. It was our first visit of the metropolis at all. We passed through suburban parts of the metropolis many times a time before but then first we left the car. While the boys started walking the street to the place where the canteen stood me and Karel stayed nearby the car observing our surroundings and photographing all what seemed to be interesting to us.

In one moment we were passing by a lying and sleeping man. He slept rightly on a concrete pavement, his left shoe missed and he was exposed to the Sun directly without any efforts to find a shadowy place. It was a typical look at a drunken homeless man. In fact, to see the homeless people in the island was not any ordinary matter. At least this was the only case I could see somebody in such a drastic show. Of course, from time to time I met various strange people but I never saw them in a similar situation. This episode happened a while before than Venda found a temporary parking place for the car. Naturally, under the local conditions it was on a pavement.

The street where me and Karel were waiting for our boys was as boring as it could be. But there was one building deserving more attention on our side of the street. It was built in a row of other cubes/houses and unlike them it was taller and more colorful, in short, it appeared to be the most exotic of all them. I crossed the street to the opposite side so that I could get the better view of it. Evidently it was either a Buddhist holy stand or a Hindu holy stand. Sorry but I have not been able to learn to tell one from the another so far. Maybe you can identify yourself which of the two religions the building belongs to.

The drunken homeless man we passed by him a while before seemed to have European casts in his face but I saw him for a moment only to say it surely. While I was wandering about the street nearby our car I could observe more local people and I tried to photograph them in an unnoticeable way. I could catch some of them for the purpose of ethnographic samples. Mostly the people who I could observe by chance in the street seemed to be so called the Creoles, the long termed result of breeding the European races with members of various other nations having their origins in the Asia and the Africa (especially from Madagascar the island). The Creoles were smaller and brown/bronze tanned, their older women (mothers) with obese robust bodies decorated or deformed by big busts, bellies and buttocks. Often you could estimate only what were origins of their mothers and fathers. Simply, you could see a colorful scale of manifold skin hues ranging from black through brown, bronze, yellow to white to mean the basic ones at least. Really, this mix was incredible and I had no doubts that it was very interesting from the genetic point of view, too.

The boys returned to the car for a short while because they learnt that the canteen existed but it was closed so that the question if the little grandma joined a good health remained to be opened. I took several last photos of the inhospitable street and then we got in the car again to continued on in our next drive.

Our next stop was done at the Indian Ocean still within St. Denis the capital. Again it was a peripheral part but unlike the previous one this was much neater with taller stony buildings, green parks, restaurants and parking lots. The main road leading in a parallel way with the coastline had more side roads turning at right angles from it towards internal urban parts located in slopes higher above the coastline. We were hungry and thirsty and the boys knew about one restaurant good for our goal. An advantage of this suburban part of St. Denis was that we could leave the capital easy with the way out of it at hand.

On our way from a parking lot to the restaurant we could refresh our views of the capital after the previous experience with the dirty street with the closed canteen. The neat coastal line with the vast blue sea surface behind it, all the decorative urban green around us, the more open room and at least but not last the close vision of some good dinner in the solid restaurant made our minds happier.
We passed by a taller monument with a figure facing to the Indian Ocean. The statue presented Roland Garros, the famous and honored personality both in Reunion and in France. As everybody knows the famous tennis tournament has been named after him, too. He has been a hero of the World War the First as an aviator. His aircraft was shot down in the end before his thirtieth birthday. His statue has stood on his pedestal together with the propeller of his crashed aircraft. Unfortunately, I found no writings in English on the pedestal. As I red in The Wikipedia some stories concerning his bold actions in The WW the First have not still been documented and then they have been legends rather than the real facts.

The restaurant situated not so far from the Roland Garros monument had a pleasant long and roofed veranda where we could take our dinner. From our table with meals and drinks in front of me I could see a part of the Indian Ocean as well as a section of the main road leading to an imposing cliff and further running alongside its green long and vertical wall. I knew this was the road out of the capital or our back way to our base in St. Leu.
And one short episode in the end of this part. While we were eating we were noticed something unusual what was passing the main road by the restaurant at our sights. It was a military convoy of several smaller armoured transporters. Probably they removed from one military base to another. This experience and three soldiers patrolling before the Roland Garros Airport after our arrival at Reunion showed me that this peaceful island has disposed its own military powers. Unfortunately, I could not take some pictures of the convoy immediately because I was employed fully by my meal on the table in that while. Of course, there was a chance to jumped up and to photograph the scene in motion but somehow I preferred eating to photographing.

St. Denis, hlavní město Reunionu v mé mysli nezanechalo žádné zvláštní dojmy podobně jako tomu bylo u jiných měst na ostrově. Oba naši hoši v něm byli během svého prvního pobytu na ostrově ubytováni. Rádi navštěvovali jednu prostou jídelnu ve městě. Mně a Karlovi vyprávěli o stařeně, která kantýnu vlastnila. Přezdili si ji pro sebe. Pro ně byla babičkou. Robert s Vendou tvrdili, že byla vynikající kuchařka. V její nabídce bylo vždy několik jídel. Hoši nešetřili velkými komplimenty pokud jde o babiččino kuchařské umění.

Proto jednou, zatímco jsme se přes St. Denis vraceli na základnu v St. Leu z nějakého výletu, udělal Venda krátkou zastávku v ošuntělé ulici s babiččinou jídelnou. Hoši chtěli zjistit, zda jídelna a její majitelka stále existují. Byla to naše první návštěva metropole vůbec. Předměstskými částmi metropole jsme projížděli nějaký čas před tím mnohokrát, ale tehdy jsme z auta vystoupili poprvé.
Zatímco kluci se rozešli k místu, kde stála jídelna, já s Karlem jsme zůstali poblíž auta, pozorovali jsme okolí a fotili si vše, co se nám zdálo být zajímavé.

spíše na Mauriciu než na Reunionu, protože právě Mauricius je spojen s tímto

V jedné chvíli jsme projížděli kol ležícího a spícího člověka. Spal přímo na betonovém chodníku, levá bota mu chyběla a byl slunci vystaven přímo, bez jakékoliv snahy vyhledat stinné místo. Byl to typický pohled na opilého bezdomovce. Ve skutečnosti, spatřit bezdomáče na ostrově nebylo žádnou běžnou záležitostí. Přinejmenším tohle byl jediný případ, kdy jsem někoho mohl vidět v tak drastické ukázce. Ovšem, že jsem občas potkával různé podivné lidi, ale nikdy jsem je nepozoroval v podobné situaci. Tato epizoda se odehrála chvíli před tím, než Venda našel přechodné parkovací místo pro auto. Přirozeně, že za místních podmínek to bylo na chodníku.

Ulice, kde jsme s Karlem čekali na kluky, byla nejnudnější, jak mohla. Ale na naší straně ulice byla budova, která si zasloužila víc pozornosti. Byla vestavěna do řady jiných kostek/domů a na rozdíl od nich byla vyšší a barevnější, zkrátka vypadala z nich všech nejvíc exoticky. Přešel jsem ulici na protější stranu, abych na ni získal lepší výhled. Evidentně to byl buď budhistický svatý stánek nebo hinduistický svatý stánek. Omlouvám se, ale prozatím jsem se nedokázal naučit rozlišit jedno od druhého. Snad sami dokážete určit, ke kterému náboženství ta stavba náleží.

Zdálo se, že opilý bezdomovec, kterého jsme chvíli před tím míjeli, má ve tváři evropské rysy, ale viděl jsem ho jen na moment, aby se to dalo říci jistě. Zatímco jsem bloumal ulicí poblíž auta, mohl jsem pozorovat více místních lidí a snažil jsem se je nenápadně fotit. Některé z nich se mi podařilo zachytit za účelem etnografických vzorků. Většinou se zdálo, že lidé, které jsem mohl nahodile v ulici pozorovat, jsou tzv. Kreolové, dlouhodobý výsledek křížení evropských ras s příslušníky jiných národů s původem v Asii a Africe (zvláště z Madagaskaru). Kreolové byli menší a do hněda či bronzově opálení, starší ženy (matky) s obézními robustními těly dekorovanými či deformovanými velkým poprsím, břichy a zadky. Často jsem mohl jen odhadovat, jakého původu jsou jejich matky a otcové. Mohli jste prostě pozorovat pestrobarevnou škálu rozmanitých odstínů pleti od černého přes hnědý, bronzový, žlutý po bílý, abych zmínil aspoň ty základní. Tahle směs byla opravdu neuvěřitelná a nemám pochyb, že je velmi zajímavá i z genetického hlediska.

Kluci se vrátili k autu za chvíli, protože zjistili, že jídelna existuje, ale byla zavřená, takže otázka, zda se babička těší dobrému zdraví, zůstala otevřená. Pořídil jsem několik posledních obrázků nehostinné ulice a poté jsme opět nasedli do auta, abychom pokračovali v další jízdě.

Další zastávku jsme udělali u Indického oceánu, pořád v St. Denis. Zase to byla periferní část, ale na rozdíl od té předchozí, tahle byla mnohem upravenější s vyššími kamennými budovami, zelenými parky, restauracemi a parkovišti. Hlavní silnice, která vedla souběžně s pobřežím, měla další postranní silnice odbočující od ní v pravých úhlech do vnitřních městských částí lokalizovaných výše ve svazích nad pobřežní linií. Měli jsme hlad a žízeň a hoši věděli o jedné restauraci dobré pro náš záměr. Výhodou této předměstské části St. Denis bylo, že jsme mohli město snadno opustit s cestou z něj po ruce.

Cestou z parkoviště k restauraci jsme mohli osvěžit pohledy na hlavní město po zkušenosti se špinavou ulicí se zavřenou jídelnou. Upravená pobřežní čára s nesmírnou modrou mořskou hladinou za sebou, všechna ta ozdobná městská zeleň kolem nás, otevřenější prostor a v neposlední řadě blízká vize nějakého dobrého jídla v solidní restauraci činily naši mysl šťastnější.
Procházeli jsme kolem vyššího pomníku s postavou hledící k Indickému oceánu. Socha představovala Rolanda Garrose, slavnou a ctěnou osobnost na Reunionu i ve Francii. Jak každý ví, také slavný turnaj v tenise je po něm pojmenován. Byl hrdinou I Světové Války jako letec. Před třicátými narozeninami bylo jeho letadlo nakonec sestřeleno. Jeho socha stojí na podstavci spolu s vrtulí z jeho zříceného aeroplánu. Bohužel jsem na podstavci nenašel žádné nápisy v angličtině. Jak jsem se dočetl ve Wikipedii, některé historky, jež se týkají jeho chrabrých akcí, nejsou stále doloženy, a tudíž jsou spíše legendami než reálnými fakty.

Restaurace situovaná nedaleko od pomníku Rolanda Garrose měla příjemnou dlouhou a zastřešenou verandu, kde jsme se mohli najíst. Od našeho stolu s jídlem a pitím přede mnou jsem se mohl dívat na část Indického oceánu a rovněž na úsek hlavní silnice, která vedla k impozantnímu útesu a dále běžela podél jeho zelené táhlé a vertikální stěny. Věděl jsem, že tohle je silnice z města či naše zpáteční cesta na základnu v St. Leu.
A jedna krátká epizoda v závěru téhle části. Zatímco jsme jedli, povšimli jsme si čehosi neobvyklého, co projíždělo hlavní silnicí kol restaurace v našem dohledu. Byl to vojenský konvoj o několika menších obrněných transportérech. Pravděpodobně se přemísťovaly z jedné vojenské základny na druhou. Tento zážitek a tři vojáci patrolující před Letištěm Rolanda Garrose po našem příletu mi ukázaly, že tento mírumilovný ostrov disponuje vlastními vojenskými silami. Bohužel jsem nemohl udělat obrázky konvoje bezprostředně, neboť jsem se v té chvíli plně zaměstnával svým jídlem na stole. Samozřejmě, že byla možnost vyskočit a scénu v pohybu si nafotit, ale jaksi jsem dal  přednost jídlu před focením.
