A Riddle
Well, let´s stop for a while in the second meadow under the top of the long mountainous back and let´s pay our attention to the question I have already suggested in my previous post: Is the plant found in the second meadow Platanthera bifolia?
If you have been my regular and attentive readers, maybe you have recalled our findings of Platanthera bifolia at the foot of Pluskovec the hill. Next we came upon this orchid at the habitats named Ježůvka and The Meadow under The Farm. Last we found this species in the course of our last trip to Galovské lúky the habitat. It was not only in the second meadow where we found the orchid. Also we found next plants of this species in the very heart of Galovské lúky the habitat.
A Summary of our findings including the plants classified as to be Platanthera bifolia:
I can divided the findings to two categories:
1/ Robust and stout plants with two dark green leaves (always with two opposite leaves at the base of each of the plants) and with tall erect axes of their spikes, some of the plants with one flowering spike and one spike in fruit. Their flowers with longer peduncles in much wider arrangements in their spikes. They grew in a quite numerous population in one section of the forest at the foot of Pluskovec the hill.
2/ The rest of the plants found more or lesser in a sporadic way at all the following habitats (a few of plants per a habitat) mostly growing at edges of open meadows bordering with forests. These plants with much lower axes of their spikes, their flowers with short peduncles making their spikes tighter with flowers closer to their axes. Always this kind was pale green in color. This kind of plants never showed both a spike in flower and a spike in fruit at the same time.
These are starting characteristics of the two groups. I saw no plant of the Pluskovec kind in the other visited habitats of Moravian Beskydy the Range. Almost at my home background I have noticed the marked difference between the two groups.
While the first meadow showed a more ruderal character with more ruderal species in its composition (it was very similar to the meadow at The Meadow under the Farm the habitat nearby Vsetín the town) the second meadow higher in the slope was typical of its fine structure consisting of fine grassy and herbaceous elements. In short, this meadow was one of the right and rare examples of so called orchid meadow.
If I thought that the plant on the figures 1 - 7 could be a different species then my wistful idea was Platanthera chlorantha. But I must state that my home studying did not confirm the assumption. I have come to the conclusion that both the plant on the figures 1 - 7 and the plant on the figures 10 - 15 are the same species: Platanthera bifolia. Though I can see marked differences between both kinds of the plants they do not exceed the boundary of this species. P. bifolia is one of our most variable orchids with one subspecies: P. b. subsp. latiflora. More the subspecies have been divided by botanists into a lot of varieties and forms. I am not going to go into such details.
Take this post like a nice example of the species variability.

Tyto nálezy mohu rozdělit do dvou kategorií:
Do takových detailů zabíhat nehodlám.
