On our way back to the place with the larger basin and the restaurant we were passing by a small house. Its door was open. Nobody inside. One room with longer tables standing against all the three walls. Yes and one chair in the left corner next to the door while I was standing on its threshold. Maybe a sit for a watcher because upper desks of the tables were glassy and I could see that some natural materials were displayed under the glasses.

I stepped in the room and I began to examine the collections. Quickly I understood that the small exhibition was devoted to seed and fruits of manifold tropical plant species. My two partners were not interested in this exposition and then they continued in walking towards the plateau. Well then, because I could not submit the collections to the more thorough examination rightly in the room I decided to took as many pictures of their items as possible. I saw no photo-prohibition inside and the sit next to the door stayed being empty. I was the only visitor in the room and nobody entered it during all my stay there.

I spent about fifteen minutes in the room maximally. When I left it there was almost a complete photo-documentation of the collections in my smart phone´s memory. You can examine some of the samples here, too.

The Fig.5/a: I saw this big plant with leaves resembling the elephant´s ears nearby a smaller
and narrow basin. I think it is Xanthosoma undipes of Araceae the family. Reunion, Mascarin

A short while after my visit of the small seed exhibition we walked to an exposition displaying members of Orchidaceae the family. Something what I looked forward to. The exposition was located in several concrete compartments semi-submerged in the surrounding terrain. The complex was equipped with windows in its upper parts allowing the Sun rays to penetrate to plants in a diffusing form only. You had to go four or five steps down and then you could pass through separate compartments with displayed plants. The system of the compartments had two short stairs. By the second one we could leave the whole exposition with no need to go back to the first stairs. The whole room was airy with the two enters opened permanently.

I could see that the compartments contented both the orchid species in pots and the ones attached to fragments of bark or of branches. Apart from the orchid species I could see various species of the epiphytic ferns cultivated together with the epiphytic orchids. But I saw no dense concentrations of the plants in the separate compartments. Their concentrations were sporadic rather than dense. Besides most of the plants were not in flower. In short, the orchids exposition was a disappointment rather than anything else to me. I photographed in a seldom way only and something of the rooms were recorded by GoPro the camera attached to my forehead. As for the orchids in the foreign botanic gardens I has been lucky so far.

I was approaching to the plateau from the opposite side to the restaurant. As I was passing by some servicing buildings I noticed a narrow smaller basin adjoining to the larger basin. I could see some next water plants in it. The most noticeable of them forced me to stop. It was the Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) of Nelumbaceae the family. I could photographed its flowers and fruits though I did not find any fully opened flower. This was my first occasion to photograph this beautiful water species.

We all came together in a woody arbour to take a rest for a while. It stood in a remote corner of the plateau hidden in the surrounding vegetation. Again I could not help myself and I had to take some portraits of Heliconia rostrata growing nearby the arbour. While we were sitting under the arbour´s shadowy roof a man joined us. Robert opened a short conversation in English with him. We met him in the restaurant already. He and his girlfriend were sitting at a table next to us. Of course, he asked Robert about where we came from. He turned to be a French speaking in English not too bad. When he received Robert´s answer we were surprised with his response to it. He seemed to be quite  uncertain as for where in the map of the Europe he could place Czech republic into. If he leaved in Reunion or if he was on his holidays there only the short talk did not illuminate. As he learnt we were foreigners in the island he recommended us to book an overfly of Reunion by a helicopter. Then he stood up and left us.

Suddenly a small bird took a rest on a woody barrier of the arbour. It behaved itself with no fear and so I tried to photograph it. It was my third attempt to catch a good portrait of this species similar to our sparrow. I think I got its best portraits just in the arbour.

A while later we stood up and left the arbour. A next while later we came over to the long stairs, we went it down and we came out of the Botanic Garden. While we were leaving this beautiful place in the vast slopes of the South West coast of the island I thought of all what I could see there as well as what I could not see there.

Well then, one of the most often questions I have always put to myself has been where does the need to establish the botanic gardens in the subtropical and tropical islands come from? Is there any natural man´s longing to surround himself/herself with various plants in one place? I could understand a botanic garden in a tropical island equipped with special greenhouses adjusted at temperatures of the temperate climatic band allowing it to cultivate plants of this climate. In fact, it would seem to be logical because the botanic gardens of the North temperate climatic band have followed just this goal: to show the plants of subtropical and tropical areas to their visitors because most of them can´t grow under the colder conditions. In other words, take the Kew Gardens in England for instant. I bet that they have had more flowering orchids anytime in their greenhouses than it has been in Mascarin the Botanic Garden. Paradoxically, a native islander from a tropical island does not find any plants growing in the more northern areas of the world in a local botanic garden. Maybe just this paradox has been leading to the neat gardens in the tropical areas but to the ones in which mostly the local flora has had a repeating character of the flora occurring behind their fences.

I have always imagined myself that the tropical orchid species in the urban tropical areas have belonged to a common floral composition having been decorating towns, cities, villages and other human zones. In the meantime I have seen nothing like that in the islands I have visited to so far. I could mean Bougainvillea spectabilis for instance, the tropical species of Nyctaginaceae the family. I have seen it commonly growing in Corsica, Tenerife, Madeira, Sicily and Reunion as well.
Unlike this tropical climbing species or many palm species I have never seen any member of Orchidaceae the family. I supposed their ordinary cultivation in cities in Reunion especially but this idea did not confirmed itself. This absence of any orchid commonly growing in culture and becoming wild in the Reunion´s Nature has still remained to be a mystery to me.

Commonly I would say that Mascarin the Botanic Garden has been an amazing place in a park like style. You can find a lot of interesting plant species as well as of remarkable separate specimens of some trees or bushes within it. Nevertheless, as I think, this Botanic Garden has still had great reserves in the ways how to make use of the local natural conditions much better than it has been so far. For example, I could imagine myself very well a solid collection of some carnivorous plants there.

Cestou zpět na místo s velkou nádrží a restaurací jsme procházeli kolem nějakého domku. Dveře měl otevřené. Uvnitř nikdo. Jedna místnost s dlouhými stoly, které stály u všech tří stěn. Ano a jedna židle v levém rohu vedle dveří, zatímco jsem postával na prahu. Možná sezení pro hlídače, protože horní desky stolů byly skleněné a já mohl vidět, že pod skly jsou vystaveny nějaké přírodní materiály.

Vstoupil jsem do místnosti a začal si sbírky prohlížet. Rychle jsem pochopil, že ta výstavka je věnována semenům a plodům rozmanitých tropických rostlinných druhů. Moji dva parťáci se o výstavu nezajímali a tudíž pokračovali v chůzi směrem k platu. Protože jsem tedy nemohl podrobit sbírky důkladnější prohlídce přímo v místnosti, rozhodl jsem se nafotit co nejvíc obrázků jejich položek. Uvnitř jsem žádný foto-zákaz neviděl a místo vedle dveří zůstávalo prázdné. V místnosti jsem byl jedim návštěvníkem a během celého mého pobytu tam do ní nikdo nevstoupil.

V místnosti jsem strávil maximálně asi patnáct minut. Když jsem ji opouštěl, v paměti mého chytrého mobilu byla téměř celá foto-dokumentace sbírek. Některé ze vzorků si zde také můžete prohlédnout.

Krátkou chvíli po návštěvě expozice semen jsem došel k expozici vystavující členy čeledi vstavačovitých (Orchidaceae). Něco, nač jsem se těšil. Expozice byla umístěna v několika betonových kompartmentech zpola zanořených v okolním terénu. V horních částech byl ten komplex vybaven okny, jež slunečním paprskům dovolovaly pronikat k rostlinám pouze v rozptýlené formě. Museli jste sejít po pěti či šesti schodech a poté jste mohli procházet jednotlivými separé s vystavenými rostlinami. Systém kompartmentů měl dvě krátká schodiště. Druhým jste mohli celou expozici opustit, bez potřeby vracet se k prvnímu schodišti. Celý prostor byl vzdušný při obou vstupech permanentně otevřených.

Viděl jsem, že kompartmenty obsahují jak druhy orchidejí v květnících tak i druhy připevněné k fragmentům kůry či větví. Krom různých druhů orchidejí jsem mohl vidět různé druhy epifytních kapradin kultivovaných spolu s epifytními orchidejemi. Avšak neviděl jsem v jednotlivých kompartmentech žádné husté koncentrace rostlin. Jejich koncentrace byly spíše řídké než husté. Navíc většina rostlin nekvetla. Expozice orchidejí pro mne byla zkrátka spíš zklamání než cokoliv jiného. Fotil jsem zřídka a něco z těch prostor zaznamenala kamerka GoPro připevněná k mému čelu. Pokud jde o orchideje v zahraničních botanických zahradách, mám až dosud smůlu.

Blížil jsem se k prostranství z opačné strany vůči restauraci. Při procházení kol nějakých služebních budov jsem si všiml úzké nádržky sousedící s větší nádrží. Mohl jsem v ní vidět nějaké další vodní rostliny. Nejnápadnější z nich mě přiměla k zastavení. Byl to lotos ořechodárný (Nelumbo nucifera) z čeledi lotosovitých (Nelumbaceae). Mohl jsem si nafotit jeho květy i plody, třebaže jsem nenašel žádný plně otevřený květ. Tohle byla moje první příležitost fotit tento krásný vodní druh.

Všichni jsme se sešli v dřevěném altánu, abychom si na chvíli odpočali. Stál v odlehlém koutě prostranství skrytý v okolní vegetaci. Znovu jsem si nedokázal pomoci a musel jsem si vyfotit nějaké portréty helikónie zobanité (Heliconia rostrata), která rostla opodál altánu. Zatímco jsme seděli pod stinnou střechou altánu, přidal se k nám pán. Robert s ním zahájil krátkou konverzaci v angličtině. Potkali jsme ho už v restauraci. Seděl s přítelkyní u stolku vedle nás. Ovšem, že se Roberta optal, odkud jsme. Ukázalo se, že je Francouz, který nemluví anglicky příliš zle. Když od Roberta dostal odpověď, překvapila nás jeho odezva na ni. Zdálo se, že je zcela bez jistoty, pokud jde o to, kam by měl na mapě Evropy zařadit Českou republiku. Jestli na Reunionu žil, anebo tam byl jen na dovolené ten krátký rozhovor neosvětlil. Když se dozvěděl, že jsme na ostrově cizinci, doporučil nám, abychom si zabukovali přelet Reunionu vrtulníkem. Poté se zvedl a opustil nás.

Pojednou na dřevěné zábradlí altánu usedl ptáček. Choval se beze strachu a tak jsem si ho zkusil vyfotit. Byl to můj třetí pokus zachytit dobrý portrét druhu podobného našemu vrabci. Myslím, že jsem získal jeho nejlepší portréty právě v tom altánu.

Po chvíli jsme se zvedli a altán jsme opustili. O další chvíli později jsme přešli k dlouhému schodišti, sešli jsme po něm a vyšli jsme z Botanické Zahrady. Zatímco jsme tohle krásné místo v širých svazích JZ pobřeží ostrova opouštěli, přemítal jsem o všem, co jsem tam vidět mohl a také o tom, co jsem tam vidět nemohl.

Nuže tedy, jednou z nejčastějších otázek, kterou si pokaždé kladu je, odkud se bere ta potřeba zakládat botanické zahrady na tropických a subtropických ostrovech? Existuje nějaká přirozená lidská touha obklopovat se různými druhy rostlin na jednom místě? Uměl bych chápat botanickou zahradu na tropickém ostrově vybavenou speciálními skleníky nastavenými na teploty mírného klimatického pásma, jež jí umožňují pěstovat rostliny tohoto klimatu. Vlastně by se to zdálo logické, protože botanické zahrady severního mírného klimatického pásma sledují právě tento cíl: Ukázat návštěvníkům rostliny tropických a subtropických oblastí, protože většina z nich nemůže za chladnějších podmínek růst. Jinými slovy, vezměte například Botanickou Zahradu Kew Gardens v Anglii. Vsadím se, že mají ve sklenících kdykoliv víc kvetoucích orchidejí, než v BZ Mascarin. Paradoxně, rodilý ostrovan z tropického ostrova nenachází v místní botanické zahradě žádné rostliny rostoucí v severnějších oblastech světa. Možná, že právě tento paradox vede v tropech k upraveným zahradám, ale k zahradám, v nichž má povětšinou místní flora opakující se charakter flory, která se vyskytuje za jejich ploty.

Vždycky jsem si představoval, že tropické druhy orchidejí v urbánních tropických oblastech patří k běžné květní skladbě, která zdobí městečka, města, vesnice a jiné lidské zóny. Prozatím jsem na ostrovech, které jsem až dosud navštívil, neviděl nic podobného. Mohl bych zmínit např. Bougainvillea spectabilis z čeledi nocenkovitých (Nyctaginaceae). Viděl jsem ji růst běžně na Korzice, Tenerife, Madeiře, Sicílii i na Reunionu. Na rozdíl od tohoto tropického popínavého druhu či mnoha palmových druhů, nikdy jsem neviděl žádného člena vstavačovitých (Orchidaceae). Zvlášť na Reunionu jsem předpokládal jejich běžnou kultivaci ve městech, ale tato představa se nepotvrdila.
Tato absence jakéhokoliv druhu orchideje rostoucího v kultuře a zplaňujícího v reunionské přírodě mi stále zůstává záhadou.

Obecně bych řekl, že BZ Mascarin je úžasné místo v parkovém stylu. Můžete v ní najít spousty zajímavých rostlinných druhů a také pozoruhodné jednotlivé exempláře některých stromů a keřů. Přesto, jak se domnívám, tato Botanická Zahrada má stále velké rezervy ve způsobech, jak využívat místních přirozených podmínek mnohem lépe, než to je dosud. Například bych si tam uměl velmi dobře představit solidní sbírku některých masožravých rostlin.

The section we were walking through was in fact a park mostly planted with manifold trees and bushes. We were walking a concrete path on. It began under a slope´s foot and then it was turning to the right continuing on in a mild climb up alongside the slope. Both the boys were in front of me because often I was stopping and taking some partial pictures of the park´s surroundings.

In a while I registered a tree growing in a lawn nearby the path. Its branches were bearing globular light red and green fruits. Though the fruits were not fully mature (orange/red in color) I knew I was looking at a pomegranate (Punica granatum) of Punicaceae the family. I was going to photograph it and at the same time I noticed as Venda was looking at something interesting at a distance of some five or six meters before me. I did two or three pictures of the pomegranate and then I came over to him. To my great pleasure I could see my first fruits of the breadfruit (Artocarpus)! One of the fruits was suspending at our reach. Its thick foot-stalk grew out of the tree´s trunk hardly a meter above the ground. The tree in its fruitful phase seemed to be almost with no leaves.

I would have payed more attention to surrounding trees and bushes but the boys were walking faster than me and I could not stay at a place for a longer time. This was why I reduced my photographing to partial views of this park´s stretch only.

When we reached the top of the mild climb up of the path a next remarkable and beautiful part of the park followed. Here the collection of various succulents growing together began. The first robust and tall specimens could be seen next to the path to the right side. There was a rocky cascaded slope under the path and it was covered with a dense growth of manifold succulent species from up to down. Either you could bypass this slope by the path or you cloud use a shortcut in a form of steps going down to the rocky slope´s foot directly. We used the second choice. Under the steps you could meet the original path again. It led back to the plateau with the restaurant and the larger basin.

Somehow it happened that Nikon the camera failed photographing a few of meters before the succulent zone. Nothing serious. Simply, its battery was exhausted. I exchanged Nikon for my smart phone and I could continued on in my photographing. Besides there was attached GoPro the camera to my forehead but I saved it and I triggered it for short whiles only to record anything what I found myself to be extra interesting. Otherwise it stayed to be at the off mode. At last but not least Venda was a next reserve because he was photographing with his own camera and his smart phone as well.

Just I wrote that I triggered GoPro the camera from time to time only and the succulent collection belonged just to the interesting occasions when I turned it on without I stopped photographing with my smart phone.

The arrangement of various plant species adapted to the lack of water on the rocky cascaded slope was imposing. Here it is not possible to go into details. I could see various members of several families growing there. Their morphological curiosities were reliable attractants to passing visitors. Of course we were no exceptions. I had to admire big and robust leafy rosettes of some members of Agavaceae the family and of Asphodelaceae the family. I registered some species of Opuntiaceae the family and Cactaceae the family. But I would say that the most bizarre forms were showed out by some members of Euphorbiaceae the family. Some specimens of the meant families were numerous, some of them were limited to few individuals. The collection of the plants resisted to the lack of water resembled a surrealistic masterpiece to me. The most bizarre specimen among the other plants, to me at least, was represented by a tall and big specimen of the Candelabra tree (Euphorbia ingens) with its distorted branches. I photographed it several times. The whole arrangement of the succulent collection was made colorful by two big dry spikes bent in pompous arches above the surrounding vegetation. This effective element of the whole picture belonged to Agave attenuata.

Úsek, kterým jsme procházeli, byl vlastně park povětšinou osázený rozmanitými stromy a keři. Pokračovali jsme v chůzi po betonové cestě. Začínala pod úpatím svahu a poté se stáčela doprava a pokračovala dál v mírném stoupání podél svahu. Oba hoši byli přede mnou, protože jsem se často zastavoval a pořizoval si nějaké dílčí obrázky okolí parku.

V jedné chvíli jsem zaznamenal strom, který rostl na trávníku opodál cesty. Jeho větve nesly světle červenozelené plody. I když plody nebyly plně vyzrálé (zbarvené oranžovo-červeně), poznal jsem, že se dívám na marhaník granátový (Punica granatum) z čeledi marhaníkovitých (Punicaceae). Chystal jsem se ho vyfotit a zároveň jsem si všiml, že Venda se ve vzdálenosti nějakých pěti či šesti metrů přede mnou na cosi zajímavého dívá. Udělal jsem pár snímků marhaníku a poté jsem k němu přešel. K mému velkému potěšení jsem mohl spatřit své první plody chlebovníku (Artocarpus)! Jeden z plodů visel v našem dosahu. Jeho tlustá stopka vyrůstala z kmene stromu sotva metr nad zemí. Zdálo se, že strom je v plodné fázi skoro bez listí.

Býval bych věnoval víc pozornosti okolním stromům a keřům, ale kluci šli rychleji než já a tudíž jsem se nemohl zdržovat na jednom místě delší dobu. Proto jsem omezil focení jenom na dílčí části tohoto parkového úseku.

Když jsme dosáhli vrcholu mírného stoupání cesty, následovala další pozoruhodná a krásná část parku. Tady začínala sbírka různých sukulentů rostoucích pohromadě. Vedle cesty po pravé straně bylo možné vidět první robustní a vysoké exempláře. Pod cestou byl skalnatý kaskádovitý svah a porůstal ho shora dolů hustý porost rozmanitých sukulentních druhů. Buď jste ten svah mohli obejít cestou, anebo jste mohli použít zkratky ve formě schodů sestupujích na úpatí skalnatého svahu přímo. Použili jsme druhou možnost. Pod schody jste se opět mohli setkat s cestou. Vedla zpět k prostranství s restaurací a větší nádrží.

Nějak se stalo, že pár metrů před zónou sukulentů Nikon přestal fotit. Nic vážného. Prostě se vyčerpala baterie. Vyměnil jsem Nikon za chytrý mobil a mohl jsem ve focení pokračovat. Navíc byla na mém čele upevněna kamerka GoPro, ale šetřil jsem ji a spouštěl ji jen na krátké chvíle, abych zaznamenal cokoliv, co jsem shledával zvláště zajímavým. Jinak zůstávala vypnutá. V neposlední řadě Venda byl další rezervou, protože fotil vlastním foťákem a také chytrým mobilem.

Zrovna jsem napsal, že jsem kamerku GoPro spouštěl jen občas a sukulentní zóna patřila právě k těm zajímavým příležitostem, kdy jsem ji zapnul, aniž bych přestal fotit chytrým mobilem.

Uspořádání různých rostlinných druhů adaptovaných na nedostatek vody na skalnatém kaskádovém svahu byl impozantní. Tady není možné zacházet do detailů. Viděl jsem různé příslušníky z několika čeledí, kteří tam rostli. Jejich morfologické zvláštnosti byly spolehlivým atraktantem pro procházející návštěvníky. Musel jsem obdivovat velké a robustní listové růžice některých členů z čeledi agávovitých (Agavaceae) a z čeledi kopíčkovitých (Asphodelaceae). Zaznamenal jsem některé druhy z čeledi nopálovitých (Opuntiaceae) a z čeledi kaktusovitých (Cactaceae). Řekl bych ale, že nejbizarnější formy předváděli příslušníci čeledi pryšcovitých (Euphorbiaceae). Některé exempláře zmíněných čeledí byly početné, některé z nich se omezovaly na pár jedinců. Sbírka rostlin odolných vůči nedostatku vody mi připomínala mistrovský kousek surrealizmu. Nejbizarnější exemplář mezi jinými rostlinami, alespoň pro mne, reprezentoval se svými pokřivenými větvemi vysoký a velký exemplář "kandelábrového stromu" (Euphorbia ingens). Fotil jsem ho několikrát. Celkové uspořádání sbírky sukulentů zpestřovala dvě velká suchá květenství ohnutá v pompézních obloucích nad okolní vegetací. Tento efektní prvek celkového obrazu náležel Agave attenuata.
