The road´s stretch under the slant with the resting place changed itself. Its smooth asphalt surface became more rough with a lot of holes and other irregularities. Venda had to make the speed lower avoiding the biggest holes. Fortunately, our rented car was adapted to the rougher terrains and so we could continued on in our way to the main crater with no troubles. In one moment we were passing by a lesser happy driver with its car in troubles next to the field path. And from time to time Venda overrun some extra slow and careful drivers.

I could see the surrounding terrain of the vast lava rock plain with various outcrops and I did not cease photographing though the car was jumping up and down on the rough surface.
At the first glance and at a distance the lava rocky plain seemed to be with no life but as we were passing through it I could observe starting sprouts of vegetation on this inhospitable surface, too. There were clusters of the dwarfed bushes or trees in places. I photographed them in the surroundings of the resting place already and several few species of herbs grew out of crevices of the terrain. And if I compared this terrain with the one of the South East lava rock slopes I could not say they were the same. Unlike the latter the structure of this one did not resemble neither a wrinkled elephant´s skin no cattle´s increments to me. This surface looked like a baked crust of a big cake with various cracks and fissures.

One of the photos of this part catches a solo lava rock with a shallow cave or a niche carved in its side. While we were passing by it to our left side I could observe parking motorcycles at the edge of the field path and their owners taking a rest in the shadowy niche.
The traffic on this way was neither dense nor sporadic as you can see on my photos here.

To reach the parking lot where our way finished up took about a half of a hour. Venda parked the car next to other vehicles and we got out of it. I looked around myself. It was a platform with the usual dwarfed vegetation growing in the parking lot´s surroundings. There was two or three smaller houses nearby the parking lot. I could see a lot of tops of various mountains surrounding the platform at all directions. Understandably, we interested in the main crater of Piton de la Fournaise the volcano. To see it was not difficult. Several steps from the parking lot was enough and we stood up at a long barrier with the smaller houses behind our backs. Then we continued in our walking alongside the barrier together with other visitors. There was a steep slant covered with low bushy growth behind the barrier. Simply we were walking alongside the barrier and we were stopping in the places where the overview of the main crater seemed to be interesting to us in a way. Mostly the vegetation behind the barrier was not tall and then we could see all the panoramas very well.

There was something surrealistic in the scenery in front of our eyes. I am going to try to depict it to you as best as possible I can do it. I was standing at the barrier and I was gazing at an imposing picture. I gazed at a vast plain, it was red and brown in color and limited by vertical walls of two massive long rocky blocks to my right side and to my left side. Besides the plain was spreading out lower under me because the overview was a part of the long massive rocky block to my right hand. Rightly in front of me at a distance I could see that the massive rocky barrier continued on but the terrain on the horizon of the picture allowed you to see its upper line only. In fact the tall vertical and massive rocky barrier formed a continuous circle surrounding all the vast plain with the main crater.

This collapsed circular plain under me was not anything else than the huge caldera, i.e. the geological expression for the typical consequences of the long-termed activities of the volcano. An approximate center of the caldera was occupied by the hill of the current main crater. If you studied the plain in the more detailed way then you could not omit an oval thing in the plain between the hill of the main crater and the vertical rocky wall to the left side. This interesting thing was one of the most noticeable side craters within the caldera. As I learnt a time later each of the marked components of the caldera had their own names. This side crater has named the Ant Lion and, as I think, the name has been very apt to it. Everybody who knows the ant lion´s trap will confirm it as soon as he or she looks at my photos of this object. The Ant Lion consisted of a lower oval margin and a pitch in its center. I could observe tiny figures walking its oval margin as well as I could see some human miniature figures walking across the plain heading for the main crater. Yes, the climb down to caldera was permitted. If you wanted to try taking a walk in the caldera you could realize it. But the trip from the margin of the caldera to the top of the main crater meant to cover a distance of several kilometers. The younger half of our team considered this idea but in the end it was left it because the trip would have taken several hours and the older half, i.e. me and Karel, would have been forced to wait for them for all the long time.

We continued on in our walking alongside the barrier further till we walked to the section where the terrain rose up in a short rocky climb up. On its top we finished our next advance forward.
When we enjoyed views of the caldera from this taller part of the caldera´s rim we stepped the short stony slant down again and we took a sit on benches under the slant next to the path leading alongside the barrier. Here again I asked Karel for to photograph me sitting on the top of the barrier. Thanks to his kindness now you can see my memory of this moment. In a moment I noticed a small bird sitting on a branch of the growth behind the barrier. Using Nikon the camera I took two or three pictures of it at the higher resolution. It was my next modest hunt to my photo-collection of the local birds. Its scientific name has remained to be unknown to me.
Also I could observe a small flock of the sparrow like birds in this place. While I was standing nearby the benches suddenly they began to land on my Nikon the camera. Three or four birds of the species were waving their wings trying to take a rest on the camera. Of course, they could not occupied the small apparatus in such numbers at one time. They were flattering their wings slipping on the smooth surface down and their songs did not express anything joyful. Obviously their way of communication was wrangling. I had the smart phone with me but as soon as I tried to photograph them they flew away. At least I knew that they occurred at this altitude, too.

A while later we walked slowly to the smaller houses nearby the parking lot. The enter into them was free. You could examine a nice exposition devoted to Piton de la Fournaise the volcano in detail in the interior of the smaller houses. Many panels were hanging on the walls. They described all the history and geology of the volcano including its wider surroundings in detail in short texts with a lot of schemes and educative pictures. Two three dimensional models of the volcano and its surroundings were installed on two lower tables. And you could photograph all the informational flood freely. Me and Venda made use of the chance fully. There was a small shop inside, too. You could buy either some fast food or some souvenirs or some volcano´s prospects there. But we bought nothing of their offers.
Outdoor again I wanted to use the local toilets immediately connected with the previous houses but they smelled bad so awfully that I postponed my need for some stop in wild in the course of our drive back to St. Leu.

Úsek silnice pod svahem s odpočívadlem se změnil. Jeho asfaltový povrch zhrubnul spoustou výmolů a jiných nepravidelností. Venda musel snížit rychlost a vyhýbat se největším dolíkům. Naše pronajaté auto bylo naštěstí hrubším terénům přizpůsobeno, takže jsme mohli v cestě k hlavnímu kráteru pokračovat bez potíží. V jednom okamžiku jsme projížděli kol méně šťastného řidiče s autem v nesnázích vedle té polní cesty. A občas Venda předjížděl některé extra pomalé a opatrné řidiče.

Mohl jsem pozorovat okolní terén rozsáhlé lávové planiny s různými horninovými výstupy a neustával jsem fotit, třebaže auto na drsném terénu nadskakovalo.
Na první pohled a na dálku se zdálo, že planina je bez života, ale jak jsme skrze ni projížděli, mohl jsem pozorovat začínající výhonky vegetace rovněž na tomto nehostinném povrchu. Místy byly shluky zakrslých keřů či stromů, které jsem fotil již v okolí odpočívadla a několik málo bylin, které vyrůstaly ze štěrbin terénu. A když jsem tento terén porovnával s terénem JV lávových svahů, nemohl jsem prohlásit, že jsou stejné. Na rozdíl od posledně jmenovaného mi struktura tohoto nepřipomínala ani vrásčitou sloní kůži ani exkrementy dobytka. Tento povrch vypadal jako vypečená krusta velikého koláče s různými prasklinami a spárami.

Jedna z fotek této části zachycuje solitérní lávovou skálu s mělkou jeskyní či výklenkem vykrojeným v jejím boku. Zatímco jsme kol něj projížděli po naší levé straně, mohl jsem pozorovat parkující motocykly při okraji polní cesty a jejich majitele odpočívající ve stinném výklenku. Jak na mých fotkách zde můžete vidět, doprava na cestě nebyla ani hustá ani řídká.

Dosažení parkoviště, kde cesta končila, trvalo asi půl hodiny. Venda zaparkoval auto vedle ostatních vozidel a vystoupili jsme z něj. Rozhlížel jsem se kol sebe. Byla to plošina s obvyklou zakrslou vegetací rostoucí v okolí parkoviště. Opodál parkoviště bylo pár domků. Mohl jsem vidět spoustu vrcholů různých hor, jež obklopovaly plošinu ve všech směrech. Pochopitelně, že my jsme se zajímali o hlavní kráter sopky Piton de la Fournaise. Nebylo těžké ji spatřit. Stačilo pár kroků od parkoviště, abychom stanuli u dlouhého zábradlí s domky za zády. Poté jsme pokračovali v chůzi spolu s ostatními návštěvníky podél zábradlí. Prostě jsme šli podél zábradlí a zastavovali se na místech, kde se nám vyhlídka na hlavní kráter zdála být nějak zajímavá. Povětšinou vegetace za zábradlím nebyla vysoká, tudíž jsme všechna panorámata mohli vidět velice dobře.

V té scéně před našima očima bylo něco surrealistického. Pokusím se vám ji vylíčit, jak nejlépe to mohu udělat. Stál jsem u dřevěného zábradlí a upřeně jsem na ten impozantní obraz zíral. Zíral jsem na nesmírnou planinu zbarvenou čevenohnědě a omezovanou svislými stěnami dvou masivních dlouhých skalních bloků po pravé a levé straně. Navíc se planina rozprostírala níže pode mnou, protože vyhlídka byla součástí toho dlouhého masivního skalnatého bloku po mé pravé straně. Přímo před sebou v dálce jsem mohl vidět, že masivní skalní bariéra pokračuje, ale terén na obzoru toho obrazu umožňoval vidět jen její horní linii. Ta vysoká vertikální a masivní skalní stěna tvořila nepřetržitý kruh, který obklopoval celou nesmírnou planinu s hlavním kráterem.

Propadlá kruhová planina pode mnou nebyla ničím jiným, než ohromnou kalderou, tzn. geologický výraz pro typické důsledky dlouhodobých aktivit sopky. Přibližný střed kaldery zabíral pahorek současného hlavního kráteru. Jestliže jste studovali pláň detailněji, pak jste nemohli opominout oválnou věc v planině mezi pahorkem hlavního kráteru a svislou skalní stěnou nalevo. Tato zajímavost byla jedním z nejnápadnějších vedlejších kráterů v kaldeře. Jak jsem se o nějakou dobu později dozvěděl, každá z význačných složek kaldery má své jméno. Tento vedlejší kráter se nazývá Mravkolev, a jak se domnívám, je to pro něj název velice trefný. Každý, kdo zná past mravkolva, to potvrdí, jakmile se na mé fotky objektu podívá. Mravkolev sestává z nízkého oválného okraje a jámy ve svém středu. Mohl jsem pozorovat drobné postavičky kráčející po jeho oválném okraji a také jsem mohl vidět nějaké lidské minifigurky, jak jdou napříč plání a směřují k hlavnímu kráteru. Ano, sestup do kaldery byl povolen. Pokud jste se chtěli zkusit projít v kaldeře, mohli jste to uskutečnit. Avšak výlet od okraje kaldery k hlavnímu kráteru znamenal urazit vzdálenost několika kilometrů. Mladší půlka našeho týmu tuhle myšlenku zvažovala, ale nakonec byla opuštěna, protože výlet by býval zabral několik hodin a starší polovina, tj. já a Karel, by bývala nucena celý ten dlouhý čas na ně čekat.

Pokračovali jsme v chůzi podél dřevěné bariéry dál, dokud jsme nedošli k úseku, kde se terén zvedal v krátkém kamenitém výstupu. Na jeho vrchu jsme další postup vpřed ukončili. Když jsme si užili výhledů z vyšší části lemu kaldery, sešli jsme krátkým kamenitým svahem opět dolů a usadili se na lavičkách pod svahem vedle cesty vedoucí podél bariéry. Tady jsem zase požádal Karla, aby mě vyfotil, jak sedím na zábradlí. Díky jeho laskavosti teď můžete vidět mou vzpomínku na tu chvíli. V jednom momentě jsem si všiml ptáčka sedícího na větvi porostu za bariérou. Nikonem ve vyšším rozlišení jsem udělal pár jeho obrázků. Byl to další úlovek do mé fotokolekce místních ptáků. Jeho vědecké jméno mi zůstává neznámé.
Na tom místě jsem také mohl pozorovat hejno ptáčků podobných vrabci. Zatímco jsem postával opodál laviček, najednou mi začali přistávat na foťák Nikon. Pár ptáčků toho druhu mávalo křídly a pokoušelo se usednout na foťák. Ovšem, že malý přístroj v takovém počtu nemohli zabrat najednou. Sklouzávali po hladkém povrchu třepotaje křídly a jejich zpěvy nevyjadřovaly nic veselého. Očividně byl jejich způsob komunikace hašteřivý. Měl jsem chytrý mobil u sebe, ale jakmile jsem se je pokusil vyfotit, odletěli. Přinejmenším jsem poznal, že se vyskytují i v této nadmořské výšce.

O chvíli později jsme pomalu došli k domkům poblíž parkoviště. Vstup do nich byl volný. V interiéru domků jste si mohli prohlédnout hezkou expozici věnovanou podrobně sopce Piton de la Fournaise. Na zdích viselo mnoho tabulí. Popisovaly veškerou historii a geologii sopky včetně jejího širšího okolí detailně v krátkých textech se spoustou schémat a edukativních obrázků. Na dvou nízkých stolech byly instalovány dva třírozměrné modely sopky a jejího okolí. A veškerou tu info-záplavu jste mohli volně fotit. Já s Vendou jsme té příležitosti plně využili. Uvnitř byl rovněž malý krámek. Mohli jste si tam zakoupit buď rychlé občerstvení, nebo nějaké suvenýry, popř. prospekty sopky. My jsme si však z jejich nabídek nic nekoupili.

The Drive up to The Volcano (Part One)
The First Stop,
A Fascinating Martial Landscape

Have you recalled my narration depicting the vast lava rock slopes of the South East coast of the island? Then first I meant the volcano named Piton de la Furnaise (i.e. The Peak of the Furnace in English).
The bare lava rock slopes have been its work because this volcano has still been active more times per a year. It is the second highest mountain in Reunion. But we could not see it from our stop at the South East coast because it was hidden deeper in the mountainous inland with its peak veiled in the permanent screens of clouds and mist.

One day just this volcano became to be our goal. The drive was a continuous climbing various roads with a lot of serpents up to the higher levels of the mountainous slopes. It was interesting to watch during the drive how the landscape was changing with the increasing altitude.

The first longer stop was done in one resting place higher above the landscape resembling a Martial terrain. Some of us took a snack, some did not eat but they lighted a cigarette after the long drive. And we all were gazing at the panoramas stretching out in front of our eyes. Not to know that we were in the island surrounded by the Indian Ocean one could think that he found himself in a landscape of some other planet.

The resting place where Venda parked our rented car was next to a short stretch of the road of which opposite side was formed by a rocky wall. The road continued on in very tight serpents just under the resting place and by this way it was going down to the vast plateau taking a bathe in grey, red and brown hues. The red hue especially evoked the Red Planet. We could see very good from our temporary observatory as the road at the foot of the rocky steep slant was losing the character of a folded snake and running in one direct line through the vast plateau and then it was disappearing at a distance among various outcrops. In short, we could see our following way like on a palm of a hand.

Also I noticed a surrounding vegetation cover. It was very sporadic and I saw no colorful species diversity. Most of elements of the local flora could be reduced to a few of repeating plant species and in places the terrain was barren and abandoned. Here and later during our next trips at 2000 to 3000 m above the sea level often I could observe lower bushy growth of some dwarfed trees looking like a cauliflower in their appearances. This lower trees or bushes were an analogy of Pinus mugo growing at these altitudes in the mountains of Czech republic. I took several pictures of plants growing in my immediate surroundings, too.

My enthusiasm of the scenery was so much great that I asked Karel for to take a portrait of me. Normally taking selfies does nor belong to my favorite activities and therefore take them as a measure of my highest excitement.

A frequency of vehicles passing by us was quite high suggesting that the interest in the volcano and its wide surroundings was great. We could overview all the human vehicles as they were driving the road in both directions in its long stretch from our position very well. Often we could watch as groups of the riders on their heavy motorcycles were heading for the volcano or from it at high speeds.

The more poor the vegetation cover was in this strange landscape the more you had to admire its non-living part, i.e. all the lava rock cliffs of various sizes and forms incorporated into the vast plain. From time to time I could recognize tiny points moving on the red/brown surface of the plain, the tourists or visitors trying to overcome the terrain by foot. Either some left their cars next to the road to test the terrain under their feet for a while or some were solo walkers relying on their own feet only.

Well, it was a time to continue on in our next way to the main crater of Piton de la Furnaise. We got in the car and Venda turned the motor on.

Vzpomínáte si na moje vyprávění, které líčilo lávové svahy JV pobřeží ostrova? Tehdy jsem poprvé zmínil sopku Piton de la Fournaise (tj. Vršek Pece v češtině). Ty holé lávové svahy jsou její práce, protože sopka je vícekrát ročně stále aktivní. Je to druhá nejvyšší hora na Reunionu. My jsme ji ale z naší zastávky u JV pobřeží vidět nemohli, protože je skryta hlouběji v hornatém vnitrozemí s vrcholem neustále zahaleným clonami z mraků a mlhy.

Jednoho dne se právě tento vulkán stal naším cílem. Jízda byla neustálým stoupáním po různých silnicích se spoustou zátočin do vyšších úrovní horských svahů. Bylo zajímavé sledovat během jízdy, jak se krajina mění s narůstající nadmořskou výškou.

První zastávka byla udělána na odpočívadle výše nad krajinou připomínající marťanský terén. Někteří svačili, někteří z nás nejedli, ale po dlouhé jízdě si zapálili. A všichni jsme upřeně zírali na panorámata, jež se prostírala před našimi zraky. Nevědět, že jsme na ostrově obklopeném Indickým oceánem, člověk si mohl myslet, že se ocitl v krajině nějaké jiné planety.

Odpočívadlo, kde Venda zaparkoval pronajaté auto, bylo vedle krátkého úseku silnice, jejíž protější stranu tvořila skalní stěna. Silnice pokračovala ve velmi těsných serpentinách zrovna pod odpočívadlem a tímto způsobem sestupovala k rozsáhlé plošině, která se koupala v šedých, červených a hnědých odstínech. Rudou planetu evokoval zvlášť červený odstín. Z naší dočasné pozorovatelny jsme mohli velice dobře vidět, jak silnice u paty skalního strmého svahu ztrácí charakter svinutého hada a probíhá v jedné přímé linii a posléze mizí v dálce mezi různými horninovými výstupy. Zkrátka, mohli jsme naši následující cestu vidět jako na dlani ruky.

Všímal jsem si také okolního vegetačního krytu. Byl velice sporadický a neviděl jsem žádnou pestrou druhovou rozmanitost. Většina prvků místní flory se dala redukovat na několik málo opakujících se rostlinných druhů a místy byl terén holý a zpustošený. Zde a později během našich dalších výletů do nadm. výšky 2000 - 3000 m jsem mohl často pozorovat nízký křovinatý porost nějakých zakrslých stromků, které se vzhledem podobaly květáku. Tyhle nízké keře či stromky byly jakousi analogií borovice kleče (Pinus mugo), která roste v těchto nadm. výškách v horách České republiky. Pořídil jsem také několik obrázků rostlin, které rostly v mém bezprostředním okolí.

Mé nadšení ze scenérie bylo tak velké, že jsem Karla požádal, aby mi udělal portrét. Normálně pořizování sefíček nepatří k mým oblíbeným činnostem, a proto je berte jako měřítko mého nejvyššího vytržení.

Frekvence vozidel, která kol nás projížděla, byla dost vysoká, což naznačovalo, že zájem o sopku a její širší okolí je velký. Z naší pozice jsme mohli velmi dobře přehlížet všechna ta lidská vozidla, jak projíždějí po silnici v obou směrech v jejím dlouhém úseku. Často jsme mohli sledovat skupiny jezdců na těžkých motocyklech směřujících ve vysoké rychlosti k sopce či od ní.

Čím byl vegetační kryt v této podivné krajině chudší, tím víc jste museli obdivovat jeho neživou součást, tj. veškeré ty lávové útesy rozmanitých velikostí a tvarů vsazených do té nesmírné pláně. Občas jsem mohl rozpoznat nepatrné tečky pohybující se na červenohnědém povrchu planiny, tj. turisty či návštěvníky, kteří se pokoušeli překonat terén po svých. Buď někteří zanechali auta u silnice, aby si na chvíli ozkoušeli ten terén pod nohama nebo byli někteří sóloví chodci, kteří spoléhali jen na vlastní nohy.

A Walk in A Falling Darkness

One day in an evening me and Robert decided to take a short walk. As we were leaving our temporary accommodation the Sun was tightly above the horizon. In fact the walk had two parts. Its first half was in the name of the daylight yet, the second in the name of the darkness.

We did not walk toward the town but to the opposite side, i.e. out of it. And this was easy because the house we lived in was situated on its margin itself. Simply, the house was a part of the town´s periphery. To walk to the town from our house meant to walk toward the South. St. Leu the town has been running alongside the South West coast in one line, from the North to the South. And our house stood in its northern end.

We were walking a pavement going in a parallel way with the coastline to our left side and a road to our right side. A terrain on the opposite side of the road was formed by steep and tall cliffs covered with a dense vegetation. However this did not mean that the terrain of the road´s opposite side was quite inaccessible. We walked the pavement for a while only and then we crossed the road to another side.
There was a field path in the place and it was turning in a mild climb up deeper among the rocks. Further it passed higher through the rocky slopes above and alongside the road. We could glance the road and the Ocean at short intervals only from this stretch of the path because of the taller vegetation.

A while later we walked to a deep furrow cut in the slopes. It was rising up between them higher and higher. Its bed was stony and it was covered with various plants growing out of crevices among stones. The vegetation veiled its opposite walls, too. We had two or three choices how to continue in our next way. Either we could start climbing the ravine´s bed up or we could try climbing the bed down at the direction of the road and the Indian Ocean behind it. Or we could step down to the bed of the ravine and then we could try to climb the opposite slope up hoping that a path was up there. But there was yet one choice.

In fact we were standing almost under a bridge. We could see its arches and pillars spanning the ravine from our side to another. The only thing we had to do was to climb a short slant consisting of bigger stones and this task was not difficult. The bridge was old and built up of stony material. Once it had connected both the slopes above the ravine. Its side barriers missed and its surface was covered with vegetation.

The vast slopes falling down to the coastline have often been interrupted by many ravines or furrows. The ravines have cut the slopes through from down to up. They have represented natural channels collecting water from the slopes to the Indian Ocean. These dry beds have changed into wild and rapid rivers during the long-termed falls. The local roads have been going at various levels of the slopes and this is why so often you can meet bridges throughout the island.

In its own way to walk the old bridge across could be risky. But nowhere we saw any warning panels, the bridge was not blocked. The line of the old bridge was free, no breaks in it at our sights and we could see that there were narrow trotted paths in weeds covering the upper surface of the bridge. It was clear that from time to time the bridge was used by pedestrians.

Robert walked as the first one and I followed him. We were walking a narrow path leading through the center of the bridge slowly and we kept at a safety distance from the non barrier sides. I stopped myself several times to take some pictures from the old bridge. We reached its opposite side with no problems. We made it in the dying daylight yet.

The way behind the old bridge continued on through a short stretch between a taller rocky wall to the right side and a smaller rock to my left hand closer to the road under us. Again we encountered on a sitting. Unlike the previous this was woody, we saw nobody there. These sittings were very often and we met them in various forms in various places of the island. They have served for the local people and foreigners as well to relax, to grill something good to eat, to talk, to have a good amusement. Whether these places were more primitive or they were more sophisticated I never saw any disorder in their immediate surroundings, always they were maintained to be clear and neat.

The terrain behind the short pass was becoming more open and we could see the road and the Indian Ocean again down under us. We passed by two excavators standing still nearby the field path. Maybe a private purpose to build a house up there, maybe a matter of the publish interests.
A several minutes later the field path ended up next to a road climbing somewhere up to the slopes. We used it but at the opposite direction, i.e. we went its pavement down to the main road leading alongside the coastline. Then we crossed the main road and we began returning to the periphery of St. Leu the town. The daylight was getting lower and lower. Despite this I made to photograph the old bridge. There was a nice view of it from the pavement of the opposite side of the road.
A while later the night veiled the coastline. On the way back we passed by several resting places with beautiful views of the Indian Ocean. For a while we took a sit in a roofed publish dwelling to light a cigarette. Almost we did not talk. Each of us perceived the surrounding night atmosphere in his own way. The ink black sky, the storming surf of the Indian Ocean to our right side, the irregular noise of passing motor vehicles driving the road to our left side. This was one of the rare whiles when you enjoyed the place where you were finding yourself fully and with no rest, when you realized the present of all the presents. It was a moment when the past and the future stopped to exist to me.

Jednou večer jsme se s Robertem rozhodli, že se krátce projdeme. Jak jsme opouštěli naše dočasné ubytování, slunce bylo těsně nad obzorem. Procházka měla vlastně dvě části. První půlka byla ještě ve jménu denního světla, druhá ve jménu tmy.

Nešli jsme do města, ale na opačnou stranu, tj. mimo něj. A bylo to snadné, protože dům, v němž jsme bydleli, byl situován na jeho samém okraji. Ten dům byl prostě součástí jeho periférie. Jít z našeho domu do města značilo jít směrem na jih. Městečko St. Leu běží podél JZ pobřeží v jedné linii od severu k jihu. A náš dům stál na jeho severním konci.

Kráčeli jsme po chodníku, který procházel paralelně s pobřežím po naší levé straně a se silnicí po straně pravé. Terén na opačné straně silnice tvořily strmé a vysoké srázy porostlé hustou vegetací. Neznamenalo to však, že je terén na protější straně silnice zcela nepřístupný. Po chodníku jsme šli jen chvíli a poté jsme silnici přešli na druhou stranu. V tom místě byla polní cesta a ta se stáčela v mírném stoupání hlouběji mezi skály. Dále procházela výše skalnatými svahy nad a podél silnice. Kvůli vysoké vegetaci jsme mohli silnici a oceán zahlédat jen v krátkých intervalech.

Po chvíli jsme došli k hluboké brázdě zaříznuté ve svazích. Stoupala mezi nimi vzhůru výš a výš. Měla kamenité dno a porostlé různými rostlinami, které vyrůstaly ze spár mezi kameny. Vegetace halila také její protější stěny. Měli jsme pár možností, jak v další cestě pokračovat. Buď jsme mohli začít dnem rokliny stoupat, anebo jsme mohli zkusit sestoupit dnem ve směru silnice a oceánu za ní. Nebo jsme mohli sejít na dno rokle a poté jsme se mohli pokusit vyšplhat se protějším svahem nahoru a doufat, že tam nahoře je nějaká cesta. Byla tu však ještě jedna možnost.

Vlastně jsme stáli skoro pod mostem. Mohli jsme vidět jeho oblouky a pilíře překlenující roklinu z naší strany na druhou. Museli jsme udělat jediné, a to vyšplhat se krátkým svahem, jenž sestával z větších kamenů a ten úkol nebyl obtížný. Most byl starý a postavený z kamenů. Kdysi spojoval oba svahy nad roklinou. Boční zábradlí chyběla a jeho povrch porůstala vegetace.

Rozsáhlé svahy často přerušuje mnoho roklin či brázd. Rokle protínají svahy zdola nahoru. Reprezentují přirozené kanály, které sbírají vodu ze svahů do Indického oceánu. Za dlouhodobých srážek se tato suchá koryta mění v divoké a rychlé řeky. Místní silnice probíhají v různých úrovních svahů, a proto se tak často můžete s mosty potkávat po celém ostrově.

Přejít most napříč mohlo být svým způsobem riskantní. Ale žádné varovné tabule jsme nikde neviděli, most nebyl blokován. Linie starého mostu byla volná, žádné trhliny v ní v našem dohledu a mohli jsme vidět, že v plevelu porůstajícím svrchní povrch mostu jsou úzké vyšlapané pěšiny. Bylo jasné, že chodci občas most používají.

Robert šel jako první a já ho následoval. Šli jsme po úzké pěšině vedoucí středem mostu zvolna a drželi jsme se v bezpečné vzdálenosti od bezbariérových stran. Několikrát jsem se zastavil, abych si udělal nějaké obrázky ze starého mostu. Jeho protější strany jsme dosáhli bez potíží. Stihli jsme to ještě za skomírajícího denního světla.

Cesta za starým mostem pokračovala krátkým úsekem mezi vyšší skalní stěnou na pravé straně a menší skálou po mé levici blíže silnici pod námi. Znovu jsme narazili na sezení. Na rozdíl od předešlého, tohle bylo dřevěné, neviděli jsme tam nikoho. Tahle sezení byla velice častá a setkávali jsme se s nimi v různých formách na různých místech ostrova. Slouží místním i cizincům k uvolnění, k ugrilovní něčeho dobrého k snědku, k popovídání, k dobré zábavě. Ať byla tato místa primitivnější nebo sofistikovanější, nikdy jsem v jejich bezprostředním okolí neviděl žádný nepořádek, vždy byla udržována čistá a upravená.

Terén za krátkým průsmykem se více otevíral a my jsme mohli dole pod sebou opět vidět silnici a Indický oceán za ní. Minuli jsme dva bagry stojící nehnutě opodál polní cesty. Možná soukromý záměr vystavit tam dům, možná věc veřejného zájmu.
O pár minut později polní cesta končila vedle silnice stoupající někam nahoru ve svazích. Použili jsme ji, ale v opačném směru, tj. sešli jsme po jejím chodníku k hlavní silnici vedoucí podél pobřeží. Poté jsme hlavní silnici přešli a začali se vracet k periférii městečka St. Leu. Denní světlo sláblo a sláblo. Vzdor tomu jsem si stihnul vyfotit starý most. Z chodníku na protější straně silnice byla na něj pěkná vyhlídka.
O chvíli později pobřeží zahalila noc. Na zpáteční cestě jsme prošli kol několika odpočinkových míst s krásnými výhledy na Indický oceán. Na chvilku jsme si sedli v jednom zastřešeném veřejném přístřešku, abychom si zapálili cigaretu. Skoro jsme nemluvili. Každý z nás vnímal okolní atmosféru po svém. Inkoustově černá obloha, hřmící příboj Indického oceánu po naší pravé straně, nepravidelný hluk motorových vozidel projíždějících po silnici po naší levé straně. Tohle byla jedna z těch vzácných chvilek, kdy si místa, kde se zrovna nacházíte, plně a beze zbytku užíváte, kdy si uvědomujete přítomnost všech přítomností. Byla to chvíle, kdy pro mne minulost a budoucnost přestaly existovat.
