Fig.1: A hybrid of Phalaenopsis (to the left) and Brassia in full flower.
The English Version

I´ve liked The Orchids

I´ve been no great cultivator of the orchids (Orchidaceae the Family) I must point out in advance. But a few of them have decorated three window sills of the house where I´ve lived for about seven or eight years already: one w-sill in my room and one in the hall. The first w-sill has been exposed to the East, the second one to the North.

The Orchidaceae Family has belonged to my most favourite plant families of all in the context of my interest in the biology as well as in the context of the botany, one of its many branches.
Fig.2: The Spider Orchid (Brassia) starts flowering.

At the present time two of my several orchids have been in full flower. One hybrid of Phalaenopsis the genera and the Spider Orchid, maybe of Brassia the genera. Now the Phalaenopsis has been flowering away already while the Spider Orchid has been in full flower.
The Phalaenopsis has been the yougest of them, I got it in full flower on May of this year, it has ceased flowering only now. The Spider Orchid has been in my small orchid collection for seven or eight years and it has bloomed every year regularly. The two orchids have been placed in a larger aquarium on the windowsill with the East exposition. The bottom of the container has been covered with not too thick layer of Keramzit, the inert material. Water has flooded it but it has never exceeded it. The pots with the orchids have stood on this moist base. The moisture has soaked through the light substrates in the pots very slowly, in the way as the orchids have liked. The aquarium has been opened with no cover on its top. This micro-niche with the eastern exposition has been sufficient my orchids to be prosperous.
Fig.3:: Two flowers of the Spider Orchid (perhaps Brassia) in detail.

At the present time there has still been one orchid in my modest orchid collection it has made me joyful: the orchid of the Cymbidium genera. It´s going to flower too and it will be for the second time since I´ve replanted it from its original substrate to my own mixed medium. This robust orchid has grown in my conditions for about eight or nine years already. You can see its seven actual buds on my pictures presented here. Its big pot has stood in a plastic dish of which bottom has been covered with the Keramzit layer. This complex has been placed on the windowsill with the nothern exposition. You see, mostly the orchids have preferred the diffusible light rather than the direct one.
When my Cymbidium opened its buds fully I´ll take any pictures and of course, I´ll share them with you too.

A notice:
All my orchids are bought in usual shops with flowers. None of them is an original species. They´ve been products of various hybridizations ´cause the orchids have hybridize in a very ready way, not only species of the same genera but also species of different generi. Today there has been so a vast forest of the man made artificial combinations of the orchids that to be an absolute expert in it has been almost impossible. Therefore I present names of generi only with no certainty they are exact. I can be sure of the only fact: All the plants presented here have belonged to Orchidaceae the Family and then they´ve been the orchids realy.
I´d bet that you would find none of my orchids in the Nature.

Fig.4: A Flower of Phalaenopsis in detail.

Mám rád orchideje

Předem musím podotknout, že nejsem žádný velký pěstitel orchidejí (čeleď vstavačovité /Orchidaceae/). Ale pár jich zdobí tři okenní parapety domu, kde už bydlím asi sedm či osm let: jeden parapet v mém pokoji a druhý v předsíni. První parapet má východní osvit a druhý severní.

Čeleď vstavačovitých (Orchidaceae) patří k mým nejoblíbenějším ze všech v kontextu mého zájmu o biologii a též v kontextu botaniky, jednoho z mnoha jejích odvětví.
Fig.5: The labium of the Phalaenopsis flower in detail.

V současnosti kvetou naplno dvě z mých několika orchidejí. Jeden hybrid rodu Phalaenopsis (můrovník) a "pavoučí orchidej" snad z rodu Brassia.
Fig.6: Actual seven buds of my Cymbidium.

Fig.8: A whole view of my Cymbidium.

Fig.7: Brassia (maybe) in full flower.

The Amazon with Three Bumps
or Quo Vadis the Postmodern Practical Medicine?

I´ve known a woman for several years. She has been more than fifty years old.
She had enjoyed her life with no serious troubles. She had cultivated her body by various body activities, she´d been going by bicycle and she´d exercised regulary at home. She had looked like a boss of the fabulous Amazons. Then, one day, she had undergone the regular preventive examination of her breasts.
Since the time her life has changed radically.

They told her the cruel truth: "We found a tumor in one of your breasts". It was the malignant form. She had to undergone an operation immediately and her afflicted breast were removed. Then she had to submitted to the chemo- and radio-therapies, she had to take a lot of pills and tablets including special injections and infusions. Of course, she couldn´t work in that time. Her therapy took several months, she couldn´t work for about more than one year.

She´s lived alone, she´s been divorced for several years, her two children have already lived their own lives out of their native nest. She would be a social case with no their help. Her salary was badly reduced during the intensive therapy of her breast cancer.

When her status was stabilized and she could work again she was taken back to her work but she was taken back for the part time only ´cause she got the part invalid pension during her home therapy.
She must pay the rent and she wants to live, i.e. to enjoy her life, not to scratch. But the rent has been too expensive and the rest of her money has been hardly enough to cover her needs.
She´s been a simple lonely woman. Before they said the sentence to her she had felt herself healthy, she´d still thought of the second sex, she´d had her dreams and ambitions.
After the fatal sentence she´s been unhappy, very nervous and she´s still been suffering from various physical and mental problems.

She´s visited to various experts at various body troubles and also she´s been going for her regular oncology examinations and each of these examinations has been able to mean the death sentence to her.
To earn some extra money she´s chared. She´s been often very tired or exhausted. This physical effort has been not too apt to her in relation to her healthy status.

The lost of a breast must be very depressive to every woman. It is a cruel punch on her intimacy, not every woman can overcome this stress with any rest. Yes, some solutions of this problem have existed but the Nature has still been the Nature. The women who have lost a breast because of the breast cancer have often been left by their husbands. That´s not the case of my Amazon. She´d divorced many years before than they found a small knob in her breast.

My Amazon hasn´t been the only one case of the breast cancer in both my working and home surroundings. I´ve met the similar cases quite often not only in my immediate surroundings but also our mass media have been full of bad news about some female celebs in troubles with the breast cancer. As I´ve been able to observe or notice the victims of the BC have lived for a shorter or longer time but their life qualities have been going down in comparison with their previous life styles.

The postmodern medicine has had the tendency to the mass preventive examinations. To my opinion their mass routine has often been leading to too fast and superficial concludes and actions. They can rather hurt than help. The postmodern medicine in my country has changed its image to the worst: Often I´ve said to myself that the postmodern medicine in my country has been rather something like an industrial institution with no emotions for a man, with no ability to empathy the others. As if we were machines or robots and not individual sensitive living beings.

My inspiration to the drawing above was just the real story of the Amazon. Why on Earth couldn´t she have one extra breast?!
My critical remarks to the routine medicine have accorded with my long-termed personal experience with it in Czech republic only.
From time to time I´m going to come back to my opinions of the postmodern medicine in Czech republic in some of my next blogs.

Musela okamžitě podstoupit operaci a jedno prso jí odstranili. Poté se musela podrobit chemo- a radio-terapiím, musela brát spousty pilulek a tablet včetně speciálních injekcí (imunosupresiva a cytostatika). Samozřejmě, že v té době nemohla pracovat. Její léčba trvala několik měsíců, nemohla dělat asi něco přes rok.

Žije sama, několik let je rozvedená, její dvě děti už si žijí vlastním životem mimo rodné hnízdo. Bez jejich pomoci by byla sociální případ. Během intenzivní léčby rakoviny prsu jí zle snížili mzdu.

Když se její stav stabilizoval a mohla opět pracovat, vzali ji do práce zpět, ale vzali ji jen na poloviční úvazek, protože během domácí léčby dostala částečný invalidní důchod. Musí platit nájem a chce žít, tj. užívat si života, ne živořit.

Má Amazonka není jediný případ rakoviny prsu v mém pracovním i domácím prostředí.

Proč by probůh nemohla mít jedno prso navíc?!

The Famous Ossuary in Kutná Hora, Czech republic, from inside. (II)

I´ve depicted the immediate surroundings of the Ossuary, i.e. the graveyard in the previous part. If you want to see the church inside you must buy tickets for yourself and that was what we did in the Information Centrum not so far from the graveyard.

The church hasn´t been so small as I´ve written previously. In fact it has been a large building but as usually if you stand before its face you can see neither all its mighty complex nor its articulate appearance. The Ossuary has been only one of its many rooms and it has found itself in one larger oval cellar like room under the level of the ground. You must go downstairs there. It has been an underground chapel and its unique morbid decorations have ensured unrepeatable and deep impressions and experience to visitors in a very reliable way.
Fig.2: The elaborated bony crest before a glassy case.
The decorations of this underground chapel have been made of very human bones and skulls. The ceiling of the chapel has been testudinate and there has been hanging the splended chandelier in its center. It has consisted of human skulls and bones too. The chaple has had its ow altar with a lot of bony ornaments.

Till now I´ve read no historical sources to learn in detail who has been the idea of , what the ways have been leading to its realization and how many years all this project have taken. I´ve had no idea if the author has had any helpers or if he´s done it himself.
I´ve been able to speculate only from the pieces of information I´ve caught up by my hearing from time to time in the very place. When our examination was over and we left the Ossuary my son told me that the graveyard was overcrowded many years ago. Bony remains of the dead were dug out and replaced to the underground chapel. Their bones and skulls have become small parts of the huge and sophisticated masterpiece.

Most of the bony material have been presented by skulls and long bones of the arms and legs. The skulls have missed jaws. The time separated them from the rests. The author of this bony art has made use of big flat bones very rarely. You can see some of them in the composition of the chandelier, perhaps they´ve been the scapulae. You can see no pelves among the bony decoration.
I saw no vertebrae in the bony composition. Also bones of the hands and feet haven´t been used. In fact, perhaps yes, but only in one case as you can see on one of my pictures presented here (Fig.4). I couldn´t see individual ribs or the brestbones with ribs in the ghostly show. Also you can´t see there any completely composed skeleton.
Fig.3: One of the more often decorations.

There have been three or four very impressive mounds in the big glassy cases built in walls of the chapel. You can examine them through two protective covers: through the younger glasses and the older metal bars behind them. The mounds have consisted of tight layers of skulls and big joints of long bones. The heads of the joints together with the skulls have been in one line of each layer, none of the components has protruded. The complete mounds have resembled strange symetrical old coffers. The skulls and the heads of the joints in individual layers have been composed unregularly.
Besides the big built-in cases with the mounds you can see there smaller all-glassy cases displaying some skulls and bones in a more detail. No doubt these expositions haven´t been original, they´ve belonged to our modern times. These all-glassy cases have stood freely against the side walls of the entering room.

There have been the bony decorations on all the walls of the Ossuary. They´ve decorated separate enterings, they´ve been around the built-in cases. You can think some of them to be quite abstract ornaments while the others can be thought to be concrete symbols, a crest consisting of bones, for example, or some writings of which litters are human bones. Some decorating elements have been often, some of them have been rare or unique. We had not so much time to examine details.
Fig.4: One detail from the crest.
More, there has been  the fenomenon of the supersaturation here: if you´ve found yourself somewhere suddenly. Consider, for example, you´re in a tropical raining forest at the first time. You´re a naturalist, that is the expert in the Nature, but first you see only green and green
and you can´t recognize anything concrete. Your brain is flooded with too much information in the same time. It takes a time than your brain starts to perceive individual details. When I took pictures in the Ossuary for instant, I absolutely overlooked coins around separate skulls before the mounds in the big glassy cases. I realized them at home only when I examined my pictures on my comp.

Fig.4: Ye, I know, there are flat bones too in this work!
All the space of the underground chapel, the Ossuary, has been lighted by several soft lights. There has been prevalent a dreary twilight there. As we could see the Ossuary has often been visited to. You can see there many groups of people from various parts of Czech republic as well as the world. You can see many exotic faces among them, adults, women, men and children. All the age-categories have been attracted to this monument.
I didn´t observed anxiety or fear on faces of the people I saw in the Ossuary. They were rather amused and wondering than intimidated. Some of them examined the bony art with a bemused expression. As if they said to themselves with Hamlet: To be or not to be. That´s what´s going on.

Proslulá Kostnice v Kutné Hoře, Česká republika, zevnitř. (II)

Fig.6: The chandelier.

Kostěné ostatky nebožtíků byly vykopány a přemístěny do podzemní kaple.

Fig.7: The chandelier with the altar on the background.
Mohyly sestávají z těsných vrstev lebek a kloubů dlouhých kostí. Hlavice kloubů spolu s lebkami jsou v každé vrstvě v jedné linii, žádná z komponent nevyčnívá. Kompletní mohyly připomínají podivné souměrné staré truhlice. Lebky a kloubní hlavice v jednotlivých vrstvách jsou uspořádány nepravidelně. Kromě velkých vestavěných vitrín s mohylami tam můžete vidět menší celoskleněné vitríny, které vystavují nějaké lebky a kosti detailněji. Tyto expozice jistě nejsou původní, patří do naší moderní doby. Tyto celoskleněné vitríny stojí volně u bočních zdí vstupního prostoru.
Fig.8: A decoration of one niche.

Byli spíše pobavení a užaslí než zastrašení.

The English Version

The Famous Ossuary in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic, from outside. (I)

On last Saturday (07.26.2014) our trio (see in My Impressions from Paris, for example) visited to Kutná Hora, the Czech historical town about 80 km far from Prague, my native city and the metropolis of Czech republic.

I´m not going to repeat or to copy historical dates to you here in my blog. This is to be my authentical experience, my personal impressions, no boring list of facts you can get from The Know-all by several punches on your keyboards. Yeah, The Know-all is my nickname of the Google.
Fig.2: A part of The Ossuary in a scaffolding.

In fact, the Ossuary in Kutná Hora has consisted of a not too large graveyard with a smaller weather-worn church. You can enter the graveyard freely, you can walk among its graves and to examine them. The graveyard has been quite ordinary, you´ve been able to find the similar ones in every town and village in my country. Besides you´ve been able to meet them in much more representative conditions than the graveyard has been around the Ossuary in Kutná Hora.

We could read names of the dead on tombstones, we could appreciate aesthetic values and decorations of individual graves, we could encircle all the church and see that the graveyard as well as the church have been going through a lazy gradual reconstruction. Maybe there has been a lack of money ´cause the recostruction´s works have been going very slowly. It has seemed to be quite surprising in relation to the value of this cultural object. I´d suppose sufficient financial injections from three sources at least: from the town, from the UNESCO and from the European Union. But the ways of money to a project have been very long and winding. The closer to the goal money has been the lesser sum has remained.
Fig.3: A part of The Ossuary with no scaffolding.

There has been one tombstone in the graveyard of which form has attracted a visitor´s attention. We noticed it too. There has been a steering wheel fixed to it and the top of the slim tombstone has been decorated with a red star with five points. Maybe a Communist car driver has been resting in peace there. It has appeared to be a great kitsch among the other ordinary tombstones. It has been trumpery and its appearance has been disturbing the genius loci.

Some sections of the graveyard have been conditioned and some sections have looked like dumps. The church has presented the own Ossuary. It has been surrounded by a robust wall from three sides except for its face with the entrance. The wall has separated the Ossuary from the graveyard. Though the church has had three towers it hasn´t been too tall. My impression from this building has been something between a church and a mortuary. In the time of our visit the left side of the church (if you look at its face) has showed a partly built up scaffolding. We observed no working activity on it. Ye, it was on Saturday. The weekends have been free in Czech republic. Despite of this you´ve still been able to see workers in action wether a free day has been or not. Mostly they´ve worked in places of which importance has been much lesser than the one of the Ossuary in Kutná Hora.
Fig.4: The conditioned part of the graveyard around The Ossuary.
People  have come to see it from various corners of the world. It has been one of our most interesting monument. Well, just because of this I´d suppose much more efforts to deal with the task as fast as possible. But in the meantime both the Ossuary and the graveyard have remained to be the dead matters in the same time as their dead have been.

To be continued.

Proslulá Kostnice v Kutné Hoře, Česká republika, zvenčí (I)

Minulou sobotu (26.7. 2014) naše trio (viz např. Mé dojmy z Paříže) navštívilo Kutnou Horu, české historické město asi 80 km daleko od Prahy, mého rodného města a hlavního města České republiky.
Fig.5: A part of the graveyard resembling a dump.

Kostnice v Kutné Hoře sestává vlastně z nepříliš velkého hřbitova a menšího omšelého kostela.
Fig.6: The kitsch among tombstones..

Mohli jsme si číst jména zesnulých na náhrobcích, mohli jsme oceňovat estetické hodnoty a zdobení jednotlivých hrobů, mohli jsme celý kostel obejít a vidět, že hřbitov i kostel procházejí lenivou postupnou rekonstrukcí. Snad chybí peníze, protože rekonstrukční práce probíhají velmi pomalu. Vzhledem k hodnotě tohoto kulturního objektu se to zdá dost převapivé.

Fig.7: The conditioned section of the Ossuary.

On The Pogrom Against The Tobacco Smokers (II)

Consider, for example, the anti-smoking slogans on the cigarette´s boxes. Yeah, I know that "Smoking can kill" but also I know that the same one holds true for many other items of the everyday life. Why haven´t they put it to the cars too?
"The Health Administration Warning: ´If you buy a car, in the same time you can buy your coffin or a very dangerous killing tool´".
Or they could put it to the pork: "The HA Warning: ´Too much pork can be the cause of your very dangerous health troubles!´" And so on.
But they´ve chosen the tobacco smokers only to my bad luck. You´ve been dependent on nicotine for so many years and now they´ve forced you to let it be. But it hasn´t been so simple, especially if you´ve smoked for so a long time and you yourself haven´t had any such thing in your plan. They´ve imposed on you their own opinion by force, they´ve done it against your free will.
Till that time they´ve proclaimed their opinion freely I haven´t had any objections. I´ve had the chance to decide myself what to do.

We´ve known very well what has happened during the Prohibition in The USA. There are the old truth that the prohibited fruits are better than the permitted. But it has seemed we haven´t still been instructed and we´ve still been repeating the same old wrongs.
We´ve known very well the consequences of the addiction to alcohol and drugs. I´ve been able to observe them in my employment.

There has been a long-termed quarrel in Czech republic: to prohibit or not to prohibit marihuana smoking? At the present time, as long as I´ve known, its cultivation and selling has been prohibited here but if you´ve smoked it nobody has said anything to you. But as I´ve been able to see (in my working routine) the marihuana smoking has caused a lot of mental troubles too, especially with the younger individuals of whose brains have still been developing. Often these mental problems have been irreversible.

I´d dare to claim that the tobacco smoking has been a much lesser threat or evil than drugs and alcohol. The different has been quite clear: unlike the nicotine effects on the brain the drugs and alcohol have changed your consciousness so that you´ve often been losing your control under it.
Besides the present spectrum of chemicals with negative impacts on the central nervous system (CNS) has still been increasing. Where are the times of only several kinds of drugs plus alcohol? The pharmacology and medicine machinery have still brought us floods of other kinds of drugs acting on our brains. And our brains have become dependent on them very easily with all their drawbacks.

I´m a great admirer of Carl Sagan but I can´t agree with his way how he deals with the tobacco smoking in  his other than excellent book The Demon Haunted Earth, A Science as a Candle in the Dark. He depicts in the book how a simple experiment has proved the fact that the tobacco smoking has been  harmful. The simple experiment has been performed on mice. The researchers have put the cigarett´s tar to the half of them on their backs. The second half of them has been intact. After a time the cigarette´s tar has caused a cancer. The intact mice have remained to be health.
But we´ve known of a plenty of other cancerogenous chemicals in our environment. I think that the same experiments on them would lead to the same outcomes.
By the way the cancer can be started with only a permanent press on some organ or tissue.
And what about the high concentrations of car gases in the atmosphere of big cities? We must inhal them wether we want or not!
There are so many cancerogenic and mutagenic chemicals in our environment that we should have no chance to survive. But despite of this fact we´ve kept living. Why has it been possible? Well, I´ve assumed that this has been the matter of our imunity system as well as the matter of the changing concentrations of various harmful chemical and physical influences in our sourroundings.

If I compare the tobacco smoking with the abuse of alcohol and drugs (from cocain, heroine, pervitine to the addictive hypnotics and sedatives including benzodiazepines) I can´t omitt their negative effects not only to the addicts themselves but through them to people around them (from their closest relatives to anybody they´ve met).
The dependent on drugs and alcohol can be very dangerous to themselves as well as to other people with an extreme high probability. There have been a lot of horror like examples of  inadequate behaviours of the persons under influences of drugs and alcohol.
At the present time there have been observed an increasing number of the persons who have mixed alcohol with drugs and vice versa. This way can have much more devastating consequences to the CNS than abusing alcohol only or one kind of a drug.

I don´t deny the indiscriminate behaviour of the tobacco smokers in the times before the pogrom. I think now our politicians have been made use of this against the tobacco smokers in a very successful way. Now the nonsmokers have been up.
But one thing has been sure: the nicotine, the alkaloid from the Nicotiana tabacum, has had no hallucinogenic effects. The nicotine hasn´t changed your consciousness as the heroine or the other psychedelics including alcohol have done it. You can smoke and work in a reliable way ´cause the cognitive functions of your brain aren´t disrupted.

Before a time I´ve read a short but interesting article in my favourite scientific-popular magazine Vesmír (The Universe in English). A scientific team (perhaps from the USA) performed a research of the optimal healthy life style. The results were surprising. The researchers concluded that if you took one aspirin from time to time, if you smoked, if you don´t overeat yourself, if you often walked or cultivated the active motion then you could have a great chance to live for a long time without you were afflicted with some of serious diseases of the modern times.
This article helps me to express  my own idea or experience very well. The man should never be one-sided in anything. Unfortunately, the tendency to be one-sided, i.e. to do the things simpler than they´ve been in the real life, can be very inconsistent.

As usually, also this topic hasn´t been far exhausted. I can promise I will go back to it in some of my futurous blogs.

To the pictures: They don´t illustrate the text strictly. It is not necessary I think. They illustrate one of my recent walks alongside a brook in Záběhlice, one of the Prague sections. There are many willows alongside the brook. Their vitality is incredible.

Moc dobře známe následky nadužívání alkoholu a drog.

Ale my víme o spoustě jiných rakovinotvorných látek v našem životním prostředí.
A co vysoké koncentrace automobilových plynů v ovzduší velkých měst?

On the Pogrom against The Tobacco Smokers (I)

I´ve been a smoker for many years. No wonder then that my attitude to the present pogrom against smoking has been very critical.
And now a bit or something from my smoking history. I´ve been a passive smoker from my craddle. Both my parents were passionate smokers. They smoked with no respects to me and my sister. The tobacco smoking was thought to be a normal activity in the fifties and the sixties of the past century not only in Czechoslovakia but throughout the world. If you see any West movie of that time you´ll find that the cigarette has been almost a neccessary item in it. The smokers were both in the West and the East.
In that time the cigarettes were very cheap in my country. The most expensive cigarettes were the ones from the West. You could chose according to your salary. In that time you could smoke freely anywhere, wether it was in your privacy or in your job.
I´m not the case of a boy smoking from his early age. I disliked smoking as a boy. My parents often wanted me to go to buy the cigarettes for them. I didn´t mind their smoking so much but I hated doing their messenger.
Paradoxically my real smoking begun when I took my first job in the hospital for the old people, i.e. in that time when I was seventeen years old. Since that time I´ve been smoking so far.

As long as I know the tobacco was transported to Europe from America by the first navigators or the first discoverers of this continent where the tobacco was smoked by its natives. Soon the tobacco smoking has found their followers in Europe too. I know that the responses to the tobacco smoking in Europe were strictly negative at the very beginning. There was the death penalty for it in some European countries (some England Kings saw it so radically I think). Nevertheless, the tobacco smoking has overcome this first aversion and it has become the cultural fenomenon for a long period having been lasting so far.
I was born just in ist greatest boom.

Soon after The Velvet Revolution the tobacco smokers have lost their unshakeable position in this country as well as in the other European countries. I´d like to know who has hidden behind this hellish conspiracy. I don´t think that the nonsmokers have had the main word in it. To my opinion the main role in this unfair plot has belonged to the governmental political economy. Somebody in the West had to think out this devilish plan. I´d say that the other governments have accepted it very quickly. There has been the only simple motivation for its realization: The vision of the great and quite easy profit. And all the plan has been built on the claim, as impressive!, that tobacco smoking has been able to kill, i.e. they´ve took care of my life without I´ve asked them for it. Well, I thank you ever so much for your impressive care but I´ve been a free man and I´d like myself to decide wether to smoke or not in a free way. But how can I decide in a free way if they´ve behaved to me like suckers or drug dealers? They´ve exploited my addiction to nicotine.

The authors (politicians) of this anti-tobacco conspiracy or movement have discriminated against the tobacco smokers very untenderly and ruthlessly in their employments as well as in various public places, in offices, in restaurants, in pubs etc.. Ye, I´ve felt to be discriminated. Sometimes some of  the steps against the smokers have bordered on abjection.

Perhaps the worst of all the anti-tobacco measures has been the increasing cost of the cigarettes. The average salary in my profession (I´m the qualified nurse) has been more than lamentable. Besides the increasing cost of the cigarettes surely hasn´t been corresponding with the cost of their production. It has been rather corresponding with the governmental greed and its amorality to the weakest segment of all the addictions which the mankind has been suffered from at the present time. From this point of view the tobacco smokers pogrom has been a poor patch on the much more serious addictive problems of our present global human civilization.
I think that not all our governmental representants have been nonsmokers. V. Havel the first president of our new establishment enjoyned cigarettes. And our present president M. Zeman has been a passionate smoker. Well, they´ve been able to afford it in relation to their salaries and in the same time they´ve been able to support the anti-smoking campaign. Why haven´t they prohibited the tobacco smoking absolutely and forever? It would be lesser canting than the present ambivalent solution.

I´ve been an active tobacco smoker since 1972 and then for the time of 42 years in total. I´ve spent 25 years in the smoking paradise. Now, for the time of the last 17 years, I´ve lived with an increasing feeling of a man afflicted with leprosy in the Middle Ages.

To be continued

O pogromu proti kuřákům (I)

A teď trocha či něco z mé kuřácké historie.

Inu, vzhledem ke svým platům si to mohou dovolit a současně mohou podporovat anti-kuřáckou kampaň. Proč nezakážou kouření tabáku absolutně a navždy?

My Free Impressions from Paris

The Museum of August Rodin

The building of the Museum has been a part of other massive and tall houses lining both sides of quite a narrow street. We´re lucky ´cause there was no long snakes of fronts before the entrance.
We had to pass through the checking system than we could step to the desk and to buy tickets. The checking system has resembled the same procedure you´ve go through in every aiport.
Then we could go out of the house and we found ourselves in a large court. It has been cobbly. The court has been surrounded by other historical houses, trees and beds of flowers.

We started crossing the place to the house before us in the same line with the first house. This has been the Museum of August Rodin at last. The Rodin´s work has been displayed in a lot of smaller rooms from the ground floor to the first floor. His sculptures have decorated also corridors, entresols and the massive broken stairs of this small castle.

I´ve been no expert for the Rodin´s work, I´ve been an ordinary observer the art only. I´ve read something of Rodin but it has never been his detailed biography. My information of Rodin had a superficial character before our visit of his museum. I´ve had the only sure information: that he has belonged to the most important representants of the modern art.

The one thing is the official taste and the other is the personal taste. As soon as some artist found his place in textbooks as well as in the general consciousness of the public, if you have an average education at least, you shouldn´t omit him or her whether you like it or not. The Rembrant van Rijn´s Night Watch has belonged to the treasure of the wideworld art but it doesn´t mean I must admire it myself. So we can see that the question of the taste is a very variable matter.

I could see that Rodin has worked with various colour materials. I think his main topic has been the man. His symbolic way of expession has made use of the female and male human bodies including its parts, for example hands. This has been his central theme as well as the medium by which he has been able to express his internal feelings, impressions, thoughts and his philosophical and religious attitudes. You can see no sculptures of animals in his museum. In fact, you can see only many busts and whole figures including sculptural portraits of more or lesser known personalities.

Just in The Museum of August Rodin at the first time I could see the four original pictures painted by V. van Gogh (two), C. Monet and E. Munch. They were atypical and surprising among all the sculptures. I think they were presented to Rodin by its authors and this way they became his private possessions.

You can find there realisticly elaborated sculptural portraits (H. de Balzac, A. Dumas for item), smaller studies and first of all the sculptures doing Rodin what Rodin has been. The lines of these works are very free, they have a semi-abstract character. They appear to be unmade-up. It is something like as if you find a strange dry branch or a tangled root resembling something or suggesting something. You modify it a bit only ´cause it tells for itself. In a similar way Rodin has worked with stone or other sculptural materials. He has accomplished the complete abstraction in some cases. Just this, as I think, has done its work immortal. He has been a great pioneer in the modern statuary in the same way as P. Cézanne or H. Matisse have been in the modern painting.

When our examination was over and we went out of the Museum again in the court we encircled the castle-museum from the right side. One of often rainy showers was just ceasing when we were encircling the corner of the Museum to the left and literally round the corner we came upon other Rodin´s statue. There has been a park behind the Museum. It is flat with a central sandy path and one side alley shadowed by trees. There´s been an artificial smaller pool in its opposite end. There has been one of the Rodin´s sculptures covered with werdigris in its center.

We encircled all the park and then we went back to the castle of the Museum the alley to the right. In fact the park has been a continuation of the Rodin´s Museum outdoor because his other works have decorated its various parts. They´ve been arranged tenderly, no crowds of them, each of them has had its place. Also there have been several his works installed in big glassy cases near to the Museum. I assume that the reason of this has been in bad durability of materials of which these statues had been created. They´d erode outdoor and they´ve been too big to be reinstalled under the roof of the Museum of which space has been limited. The statues in the glassy cases have looked like animals in a small zoological garden.

And yet one impression from the park. It was at the first time in this park where we could see from the top of the Eiffel´s Tower .

Mé volné dojmy z Paříže

Muzeum Augusta Rodina

Budova muzea je součástí jiných masivních a vysokých domů lemujících obě strany dosti úzké ulice. Měli jsme kliku, protože před vchodem nebyli žádní dlouzí hadi front.
Než jsme mohli přistoupit k pokladně a zakoupit lístky, museli jsme projít kontrolním systémem.

Když naše prohlídka skončila a my zase vyšli na nádvoří před Muzeum, obešli jsme zámek-muzeum zprava. Jedna z častých dešťových přeháněk zrovna ustávala, když jsme obcházeli nároží Muzea vlevo a doslova za rohem jsme narazili na další Rodinovu sochu. Za Muzeem je park. Je rovný s centrální písčitou cestou a jednou postranní cestou stíněnou stromy.

A ještě jeden dojem z toho parku. Bylo to poprvé v tomto parku odkud jsme mohli spatřit vrchol Eiffelovy věže.
