Before a time one of the Nobel price laureats for the physiology and the medicine claimed: If somebody should get the Nobel price for the neurophysiology then it should be the squid.
I came upon this thought in the neurobiological textbook titled From Neuron to Brain (Nicholls, J.G., Martin, A.R., Wallace, B.G., Fuchs, P.A., the fourth edition, 2001). I was the good luck to participate in its translation from English to Czech. Its Czech version was published by the Academia Publishing House in 2013 and this year it was appreciated as the best translation in the category of the best translation of the foreign popular scientific literature.

Really, the huge axons of this interesting marine mollusc have contributed to our knowledge of the nervous system in a very important way in the times when the microelectrodes didn´t exist. The researchers had thick electrodes only in that time. They couldn´t be put to the normal nervous fibres because the normal nervous fibres were very thin in diameter. The neurobiologists needed to measure the electrical current outside and inside of the nervous fibre to learn the exact way how the nervous impulses arouse and how they were conducted. The pioneer works on this field were allowed just by the huge axons of the squid. Their diameters have been sufficient to the old thick electrodes.

I think that this considerate attitude to the squid should hold true for all the other laboratory animals helping us with their own bodies to understand various mechanisms and processes of the life.Unfortunately, Alfred Nobel didn´t think of this category. To my taste this category would be better than the NP for the peace or the NP for the economy. At least symbolicly ´cause I´m not sure if the lab living beings would be able to appreciate the human importance of the Nobel price.

můžeš dostat Nobelovu cenu

Před nějakým časem jeden z laureátů Nobelovy ceny za fyziologii a lékařství prohlásil: Kdyby měl někdo dostat Nobelovu cenu, pak by to měla být oliheň.
Na tuhle myšlenku jsem narazil v učebnici neurobiologie Od nervu k mozku. Měl jsem to štěstí podílet se na jejím překladu z angličtiny do češtiny. Česká verze byla vydána nakladatelstvím Academia v roce 2 013 a letos byla oceněna jako nejlepší překlad v kategorii nejlepší překlad ze zahraniční populární vědecké literatury.

Skutečně, obří axony tohoto zajímavého mořského měkkýše přispěly velice významně k našim znalostem o nervovém systému v dobách, kdy mikroelektrody neexistovaly. Badatelé měli příliš silné elektrody. Na normální nervová vlákna se uplatnit nedaly, protože běžná nervová vlákna mají velmi tenký průměr.
Aby neurobiologové zjistili, jak nervové impulzy přesně vznikají a jsou vedeny, potřebovali měřit elektrický proud vně a uvnitř nervového vlákna. Průkopnické práce na tomto poli umožnily právě obří axony olihně. Jejich průměr byl pro staré silné elektrody dostačující.

Myslím, že tento uznalý postoj vůči olihni by měl platit pro všechny ostatní laboratorní živáčky, kteří nám vlastními těly pomáhají chápat rozmanité životní mechanizmy a procesy. Alfréd Nobel bohužel na tuto kategorii nemyslel. Na můj vkus by byla lepší než NC za mír či NC za ekonomii. Aspoň symbolicky, protože si nejsem jistý, jestli by laboratorní živáčci lidský význam Nobelovky dokázali ocenit.
