On One Plant Looking Like A Peg

Adam Majer, my friend and amateur botanist, was informed of my trip to Lovoš in České středohoří the range by my e-mail in advance. In his answer he meant high probability of some plants of Orobanche L. the genus occuring there.
He has been very interested in this genus, it has belonged to his favourite ones.

The plants of this genus have no chlorophyll and therefore they parasitize. Their hosts are various green plants.

Their habitus is very harsh, they look like a peg or a nog. Their name is "záraza" in Czech meaning something what you can run into a soil like a peg.

It was my friend Vendy who found the first specimen of this genus. Just we were leaving the outcrop, the place of our rest and views of the surrounding landscape. We were climbing up the steep open slant to a normal touristic path when Vendy saw the first plant. He told me about seeing some strange plant and I could confirm that this was some species of Orobanche L. the genus.

A moment later Vendy found the second plant of the same habitus alongside the path leading to the top of Lovoš the hill but I didn´t take a picture of it.

After our trip I sent my photo of this specimen to Adam to identify its species. But Adam wasn´t sure of it and resent it to one of his experts in this genus. His answer was uncertain, too, because the plant was captured in a starting phase of its flowering, in other words, its flowers weren´t opened fully so that he couldn´t examine their diacritic symptoms being necessary to its exact determination.

I´m adding one photo of Euphorbia cyparissias L., a common species in my country growing in Lovoš, too.

O jedné rostlině, která vypadá jako kolík

Adam Majer, přítel a amatérský botanik, byl o mém výletu na Lovoš informován předem e-mailem. Ve své odpovědi zmínil vysokou pravděpodobnost rostlin z rodu záraza (Orobanche L.), které se tam vyskytují.
O tento rod se velice zajímá, patří k jeho oblíbeným.

Rostliny tohoto rodu nemají chlorofyl, a proto parazitují. Jejich hostiteli jsou různé zelené rostliny.

Jejich vzhled je velmi úsporný, vypadají jako kolík. Česky se rod jmenuje záraza, což značí něco, co můžete zarazit do země jako kolík. To Venda našel první exemplář tohoto rodu. Zrovna jsme opouštěli skalní výstup, místo našeho odpočinku a pohledů do okolní krajiny. Stoupali jsme strmým otevřeným svahem k normální turistické cestě, když Venda spatřil první rostlinu. Sdělil mi, že vidí nějakou podivnou rostlinu a já mohl potvrdit, že se jedná o nějaký druh zárazy.

O chvíli později našel Venda druhou rostlinu stejného vzhledu podél cesty vedoucí na vrchol Lovoše, ale tu jsem nevyfotil.

Po našem výletě jsem snímek vzorku poslal Adamovi Majerovi, aby určil jeho druh. Ale Adam si jím nebyl jistý a přeposlal jej jednomu ze svých specialistů na tento rod. Také jeho odpověď byla nejistá, protože rostlina byla zachycena v počáteční fázi kvetení, jinými slovy, její květy nebyly zcela rozvité, takže nemohl prozkoumat jejich diakritické (rozlišovací) znaky, jež jsou nezbytné k přesnému určení.

Přidávám snímek pryšce chvojky (E. cyparissias L.), v mé vlasti běžný druh, rostoucí též na Lovoši.
