To reach Los Gigantes, a small port laying at the south west coast of the island, we had to cover a long way by a taxi cab from our northern base in Santa de la Cruize. Indeed, you can look at the distance on a map of Tenerife.

The Fig.3: I photographed this low tree (in culture) in several places of Tenerife. This one in
flower decorated the place of our arrival at Los Gigantes. I identified it at home only. According
to a botanic guider devoted to the tropical plants now I have known that it is Thevetia peruviana of
 Apocynaceae the family. Among various names also this species is called the yellow oleander by the

Obr.3: Tento nízký strom (v kultuře) jsem fotil na několika místech Tenerife. Tenhle kvetoucí zdobil
místo našeho příjezdu do Los Gigantes. Určil jsem ho teprve doma. Podle jednoho botanického
průvodce věnovaného tropickým rostlinám teď už vím, že se jedná o thevetii peruánskou (Thevetia
peruviana) z čeledi toješťovitých (Apocynaceae). Mezi jinými názvy ji Angličané nazývají také "Yellow

Our taxi driver stopped his car in a slanted section of a road above the sea. Robert payed to him and we got out. There were manifold buildings around us in a steep slope. The road continued on going down to the own port. Mostly the surrounding buildings were various hotels or restaurants documenting a typical touristic character of the town. While we were standing there and looking around the surroundings I was taking my first shots of the place.

A while later we saw a stand nearby us. It was an information service for tourists. A female officer in the stand said to Robert in English that we were in the right place but that the offices where we could book a sea trip with whales watching were down in the harbor.

According to the officer´s instructions we stepped down to the harbor. There were two offices offering sea trips with whales watching before an enter into the own harbor. They adjoined each other. They seemed to be a very promising guarantee. Robert entered the bigger of them and a moment later he returned with bought tickets saying to me that we had a free hour to the start of our sea trip.

realized very well that we could buy a sea trip but not willingness of the big marine mammals

The harbor was inner, it was separated from the free sea. There were a lot of anchored smaller ships or boats in it. We were killing a free time by wandering about it and of course, I did not forget to photograph. In the end of the free hour we sat in a garden of a restaurant lining one of the harbor´s edges. We took a drink. A glass of beer to Robert and a cup of coffee to me. While we were drinking our drinks and smoking our cigarettes there were a lot of teaming thoughts in my head. It was my first sea trip in my life. Would my inner man bear all the rocking on the sea waves? Would I see at least a piece of a body of any cetacean? And if yes, would I be able to photograph it? And would I see one species or more ones? What would a sort of a ship be on which board we would spend our one hour lasting sea trip?  Would it be bigger than the small vessels in the harbor? The answers to all these questions were nearing to me with every more minute. When it was high time to us Robert payed for the drinks, we visited to toilets and then we started walking to the place of our embarkation.

Abychom dosáhli Los Gigantes, malého přístavu ležícího při jihozápadním pobřeží ostrova, museli jsme z naší severní základny v Santa de la Cruize urazit dlouhou cestu taxíkem. Ostatně, můžete se na tu vzdálenost podívat na nějaké mapě Tenerife.

Taxíkář zastavil svůj vůz ve svažitém úseku silnice nad mořem. Robert mu zaplatil a vystoupili jsme. Kol nás ve strmém svahu byly rozmanité budovy. Silnice se dál svažovala do vlastního přístavu. Okolní budovy byly vesměs hotely a restaurace dokládající typický turistický charakter městečka. Zatímco jsme tam postávali a rozhlíželi se po okolí, dělal jsem první snímky toho místa.

O chvíli později jsme poblíž nás uviděli stánek. Byl to informační servis pro turisty. Úřednice Robertovi anglicky sdělila, že jsme na správném místě, ale že kanceláře, kde bychom si mohli zabukovat výlet po moři s pozorováním velryb jsou dole v přístavu.

Podle pokynů úřednice jsme sešli do přístavu. Před vstupem do vlastního přístavu byly dvě kanceláře nabízejíci výlety po moři s pozorováním velryb. Navzájem spolu sousedily. Zdálo se, že jsou velice slibnou zárukou. Robert vešel do větší z nich a po chvíli se vrátil se zakoupenými lístky a sdělil mi, že do začátku našeho výletu máme volnou hodinu.

Přístav byl vnitřní, byl od širého moře oddělen. Byla v něm zakotvena spousta menších lodí nebo člunů. Volný čas jsme zabíjeli tím, že jsme se po něm potulovali a samozřejmě, že jsem nezapomínal fotografovat. V závěru volné hodiny jsme se usadili v zahrádce jedné restaurace lemující jeden z okrajů přístavu. Dali jsme si pití. Sklenice piva pro Roberta a šálek kávy pro mne. Zatímco jsme popíjeli nápoje a pokuřovali cigarety, v hlavě se mi hemžila spousta myšlenek. Byl to můj první výlet po moři v životě. Unese můj žaludek všechno to houpání na mořských vlnách? Zahlédnu aspoň kousek těla nějakého kytovce? A pokud ano, budu schopen ho vyfotit? A uvidím jeden druh nebo víc druhů? Jaký bude typ lodi, na jejíž palubě strávíme hodinový výlet na moři? Bude větší než ta malá plavidla v přístavu? Odpovědi na všechny tyhle otázky se ke mně blížily s každou další minutou. Když jsme měli nejvyšší čas, Robert zaplatil za pití, navštívili jsme toalety a vydali se k místu našeho nalodění.
