The Coral Rooted Orchid (I)

You who have watched and read contributions in my blog regularly may recall the one in which I depicted my first attempt to find a tiny and rare orchid in the region not too far away from Prague, in the region called Český kras. You who have not read my posts regularly can find it additionally. Or you can read this one separately.

There have been three attempts in total to find this rare species so far. The first occurred at the end of May, last year. Unfortunately, this efforts were unsuccessful. The last ones were realized on May the first and on May the third  2017.

The second attempt (5.1. 2017)
It was initiated by a post on Facebook. The post showed the tiny orchid in flower and this photo hunt was announced from a locality nearby Brno the Moravian metropolis. The author of the post wrote that he could photograph the plant due to his dear girl friend because otherwise he would not have noticed it. The man took the photo on 4.30. 2017. This was the right trigger to me.

On the following day, on May the first, on The Day of The Work Celebration, our trio set up to explore the locality we had already visited to last year. My assumption was simple: If the plant was announced from Brno the Moravian city so early (there was a dense snowing a week or two before in this region) then it might be in flower in our old known place, too. We have thought that the first attempt to find it might fail because we were too late (it was at the end of May 2016).

The Fig.12: What is a kind of this plant? My answer is that you can see germinating seedlings of
Carpinus betulus with first two cotyledons (leaves). Their massive germination was seen very often.

Unlike the first visit Vendy parked his car at a place called St. John under The Rock. We found the place to be interesting and to be worth to visit to. There is a large historical Benedictine monastery plus a robust church standing in one complex together under the high rock. On the top of the rock it can be seen an erected simple cross. The cross indicates a religious place to pilgrims as well as to both ordinary foreign and local tourists. The top of the vertical rock gives amazing views of the surrounding landscape but to enjoy it you must climb a way up. It hides itself behind a rear part of the Monastery with its face waiting for to be renewed. As you can see on my photo the Church´s face has already been repaired.

Though I am no entomologist I would say this beetle is Geotrupes stercorarius.

But our mission here was different and therefore soon we left the touristic attractions behind our backs to reach a path´s foot where our climb up could start. On our way to it we passed by a local graveyard with an impressive building of a mortuary looking like a small church rather than a corpses store.

A following steep way up led through a growth of a mixed forest with abundant herbaceous floor. Among others I could see a lot of still flowering plants of Anemone nemorosa, Hepatica nobilis, several plants of Anemone ranunculoides and when I swept leaves of Asarum europaeum  aside slowly I could see its hidden flowers under them. The most often component of the mixed forest was a beech (Fagus sylvatica).

Because the terrain alongside the long climbing seemed to me to be a convenient surroundings for the Coral Rooted Orchid to grow there I warned my companions about to search for our object of interest with the top attention in this phase of our climb up already. But none of us succeeded in this search for it in the steep climb up. The climb up was finished at the bar blocking a more way symbolically.   This was a place of our first visit. We took a rest using woody sits and table installed there for tourists.

The most interesting section waited for us behind the bar. We were about to check a place in the higher part of this climbing stretch. Thanks to my good friend Adam Majer we had its exact coordinates and more instructions. Adam had found the Coral Rooted Orchid there two or three years ago but our first visit to the place his finding did not confirm.

My reply followed immediately: "That's nothing special. It is Oxalis acetosella only but in a
lesser known arrangement of its leaves." A good example of purposeful motions with the plants.
The way how to decrease evaporation in an open sunny place. The plants grew on a stub covered
with a moss. Their blades in a horizontal position normally took this vertical position due to
a direct sunshine. It was not only purposeful. It was beautiful, too. In the climb up above St. John

odpar na otevřeném slunném místě. Rostliny rostly na pařezu porostlém mechem. Jejich čepele,
normálně ve vodorovném postavení, zaujaly kvůli přímému osvitu vertikální pozici. Bylo to nejen

Unfortunately, our exploration of the place with the highest probability of some findings of The Coral Rooted Orchid turned out to be odd again. Again three pairs of our eyes were examining a soil under our feet. Our motion forward was slow and careful. The soil was covered with usual spring herbs we could see during the previous climb up. My eyes staring at the terrain were attacked continuously by tiny flies. They started flying up from the vegetation cover as well as from the continuous layer of dead beech leaves like some flying guards of the Coral Rooted Orchid making our searching for it much more difficult by purpose. We saw no sign of this shy, fragile and tiny forest beauty. Afternoon was changing in evening slowly. We were forced to finish our searching. I disliked giving it up. I could not understand this next failing. I hoped in success so much. With each fail my longing to find The Coral Rooted Orchid has increased.

After our return to Prague with a longer stop in Beroun the town to eat something my mood was not too much good. Soon I went to bed. On May the second in the late afternoon I sat at the table and turned my comp on with my usual cup of coffee next to my right hand. I lighted a cigarette and started browsing through FB posts. A moment later I petrified with an unexpected surprise. I was staring at a nice specimen of the Coral Rooted Orchid in flower. An author of the photo took it in Český kras the region a day after our visit. There were three or four photos of several specimens of the orchid in the post and no information of where they were found exactly in this large region. Nevertheless I got a clear proof of this orchid´s present existence in Český kras. It was a great challenge to me.
So it happened that on May the third me and my son Robert realized the third attempt to find this rare species. But this is a matter of my next post already.

Čerstvá zpráva o mých dalších pokusech
najít drobounkou orchideu, korálici trojklanou (Corallorhiza trifida) (I)

Vy, kteří sledujete a čtete příspěvky v mém blogu pravidelně, si možná vzpomínáte na ten, v němž jsem popsal první pokus najít drobnou a vzácnou orchideu v oblasti nepříliš vzdálené od Prahy, v oblasti zvané Český kras. Vy, kteří mé posty nečtete pravidelně, můžete si ho vyhledat dodatečně. Nebo si tento můžete přečíst samostatně.

Najít tenhle vzácný druh obnášelo zatím celkově tři pokusy. První se odehrál loni koncem května. Toto úsilí bylo bohužel neúspěšné. Poslední dva pokusy se uskutečnily 1.5. a 3.5. 2017.

Druhý pokus (1.5. 2017)
Inicioval ho jeden post na FB. Ukazoval tu drobnou orchidku v květu a tenhle foto úlovek byl oznamován z lokality poblíž moravské metropole Brna. Autor postu psal, že rostlinu mohl vyfotit díky své drahé přítelkyni, protože jinak by si jí býval nevšimnul. Ten člověk fotku pořídil 30.4. 2017. Tohle pro mne byl ten správný spouštěč.

Následující den, na prvního Máje, na Den Svátku práce, se naše trio vydalo na průzkum lokality, kterou jsme už navštívili loni. Měl jsem jednoduchý předpoklad: Jestliže byla rostlina oznámena z Brna tak časně (v této oblasti před pár týdny hustě sněžilo), pak by snad mohla kvést i na našem starém známém místě. Myslíme si, že první pokus ji najít selhal, protože jsme přijeli moc pozdě (to bylo koncem května 2016).

Na rozdíl od první návštěvy Venda zaparkoval auto v místě, které se jmenuje Svatý Jan pod Skalou. Shledali jsme to místo zajímavým a stojícím za návštěvu. Pod vysokou skálou stojí v jednom komplexu pohromadě velký benediktýnský klášter a robustní kostel. Na vrcholu skály lze vidět vztyčený prostý kříž. Kříž vyznačuje náboženské místo pro poutníky a také pro obyčejné zahraniční i místní turisty. Vrchol kolmé skály poskytuje úžasné výhledy do okolní krajiny, ale abyste si je užili, musíte vystoupit cestou vzhůru. Skrývá se za zadní částí kláštera s fasádou, která čeká na obnovu. Jak vidíte na fotografii, fasáda kostela je již opravena.

Ale naše zdejší mise byla jiná, a proto jsme turistické atrakce brzy nechali za zády, abychom dosáhli úpatí cesty, kde měl začít náš výstup. Cestou k ní jsme procházeli kol místního hřbitova s působivou stavbou márnice, jež se spíše než skladu mrtvol podobala kostelíku.

Obr.30: O tomhle nápisu vytesaném v kameni nevím nic. Objekt se nacházel poblíž dřevěného
sezení pro turisty, kde jsme si naposledy odpočali před opětovným sestupem do Sv. Jana pod
Skalou. Nápis je místy nečitelný a jeho význam mi není jasný. Snad to je nějaká báseň či sentence
od neznámého autora. Nadpis je SEKERA. 1.5. 2017, pořízeno mým chytrým mobilem.

Následující strmá cesta vzhůru vedla porostem smíšeného lesa s hojným bylinným patrem. Mezi jinými jsem mohl vidět spousty stále kvetoucích rostlin sasanky hajní (Anemone nemorosa), jaterníku podléšky (Hepatica nobilis), několik sasanek přyskyřníkovitých (A. ranunculoides), a když jsem pomalu rozhrnul listy kopytníku evropského (Asarum europaeum), mohl jsem pod nimi pozorovat schované květy. Nejčastější složkou smíšeného lesa byl buk (Fagus sylvatica).


Protože se mi tamní terén podél dlouhého stoupání zdál vhodným prostředím pro růst korálice, upozornil jsem své kumpány na pátrání po našem zájmovém objektu s nejvyšší pozorností již v této fázi výstupu. Avšak nikdo z nás ve strmém stoupání v pátrání po ní neuspěl. Výstup byl ukončen u závory symbolicky blokující další cestu. Tohle bylo místo naší první návštěvy. Odpočali jsme si, využívaje dřevěných sedátek a stolu instalovaných tam pro turisty.

Nejzajímavější úsek na nás čekal za závorou. Chystali jsme se zkontrolovat místo ve vyšší části tohoto stoupajícího úseku. Díky mému dobrému příteli Adamu Majerovi jsme měli jeho přesné souřadnice a další pokyny. Adam tam korálici našel asi před třemi roky, ale naše první návštěva na tom místě jeho nález nepotvrdila.

Bohužel, náš průzkum místa s nejvyšší pravděpodobností nějakých nálezů korálice se ukázal opět lichý. Opět půdu pod nohama zkoumaly tři páry našich očí. Pohyb vpřed byl pomalý a opatrný. Půdu porůstaly obvyklé jarní byliny, které jsme mohli vidět během předešlého výstupu. Mé oči upřeně zírající na terén neustále atakovaly titěrné mušky. Vzlétaly z vegetačního krytu a také ze souvislé vrstvy odumřelých bukových listů jako nějací létající strážci korálice, kteří záměrně pátrání po ní mnohem víc znesnadňují. Nezahlédli jsme žádnou známku po této plaché, křehké a drobounké lesní krásce. Odpoledne zvolna přecházelo ve večer. Museli jsme pátrání ukončit. Vzdával jsem ho nerad. Nedokázal jsem tento další nezdar pochopit. Tolik jsem doufal v úspěch. Moje touha najít korálici trojklanou (C. trifida) s každým nezdarem vzrůstala.

Po návratu do Prahy s delší zastávkou v Berouně na jídlo jsem moc dobrou náladu neměl. Šel jsem brzy spát. Druhého května v pozdním odpoledni jsem se usadil u stolu a zapnul jsem komp s obvyklým šálkem kávy po pravici. Zapálil jsem si cigaretu a pustil se do prohlížení postů na FB. O chvíli později jsem zkoprněl nečekaným překvapením. Zíral jsem na pěkný exemplář kvetoucí korálice. Autor fotky ji pořídil v Českém krasu den po naší návštěvě. V postě byly tři nebo čtyři fotky více jedinců téhle orchidky a žádné informace o tom, kde přesně byli v téhle rozsáhlé oblasti nalezeni. Nicméně, získal jsem jasný důkaz o současné existenci téhle orchidky v Českém krasu. Byla to pro mne velká výzva. Tak se stalo, že třetího května jsme se synem Robertem uskutečnili třetí pokus najít tento vzácný druh. Ale tohle už je záležitost mého příštího postu.
