It Is High Time To Express My Opinion (IV)

On The Green Peace
and The Whales

My sympathy to this movement lasted for a short time. Its first actions were radical and uncompromised. They attracted attentions of the mass media throughout the world. Some messages of their actions penetrated through the Iron curtain to our totalitarian media too. I could read about them.
I could consider their qualities and impacts.
Soon I noticed that the Green Peace had no strong support among important scientists, especially among biologists or more especially among ecologists. When I write "among ecologists" I mean true scientific ecologists, no self-invited ecologists, whose numbers and forms have been huge today. The problem has been to tell who has been who. In other words there has been an unclear situation in the mess of various would be scientific or semi-scientific ecological movements or approaches.
At the first glance the activists of the Green Peace appeared to be The Saviors of The Nature. Their triumphant and adventurous missions, often at risk of their lives, to save whales have been known notoriously. But their great popularity of the seventies and the eighties of the past century has seemed to be disappearing in the second millenium. And what about the whales? Now have they swum in absolutely safety sea waters? I wouldn´t say so. Has the problem with the threatened whales been saved definitely when the whalers has been eliminated? I don´t think so.
The whales has been fascinating creatures, I have admired them, but there have been vast numbers of other fascinating living beings and their bad luck has been that they haven´t been so distinguish, huge and charming. From this point of view The GP´s efforts to save the Nature have appeared to be in vain. The whale (whatever species of the Cetacea order) is only a grain in a large sandy beach.
The man would like all the other beings to follow him on his road to the absolute technocracy, but his own demands on his life have denied this purpose. This is why I dislike The GP´s pompous actions. I´ve felt that there has been something else in their actions than the grand goal to preserve our other relatives with DNA for our next generations. I´ve thought it has been the efforts to become visible, it has been the efforts to be popular and known, it has been a longing for the self-expressing. These tendencies have been closely connected with the young. Some of them have self-expressed as the Anarchists, some of them have tried to do it as the Skin Heads, some of them as the Rowdies, some of them have done it as the Green Peace (I´´d change the Peace for Skulls, The Green Skulls) etc..
Well, I may be wrong but I haven´t known an only GP´s action regarding any plant species in the same style as with the whales. Then why "Green"? Also the name of their famous ship, The Rainbow Warrior I (II), is not too matching with their peaceful name.

From time to time similar activities influenced by The GP have been rising with us and in other countries. And so we can see young people bound by chains to trees determined to be felled or persons sitting on tops of the towers of a nuclear plant and in this way expressing their protest against this usage of the nuclear energy. But this resistance has been only symbolical, mostly it hasn´t solved anything of the problems in their essences. The nuclear plants has still stood and has done their work, the forests have still been felling.........and the activists have felt to be important, they´ve felt they´ve done good jobs.
Yes, at least they´ve urged, the harder the better. The problems with the Nature has been pushing to the political level. The human troubles with the Nature have started to be solved by politicians.

O Green Peace
a velrybách

Moje sympatie k tomuto hnutí trvala krátce. Jejich první akce byly radikální a nekompromisní. Přitahovaly pozornost masmédií na celém světě. Některé zprávy o jejich akcích pronikly Železnou oponou také do našich totalitních médií. Mohl jsem o nich číst. Mohl jsem zvažovat jejich kvality a dopady.
Brzy jsem si všiml, že Green Peace nemají žádnou silnou podporu mezi významnými vědci, zejména mezi biology či ještě speciálněji mezi ekology. Když píši "mezi ekology", míním pravé vědecké ekology, žádné samozvané ekology, jejichž počty a formy jsou dneska ohromné. Problém je rozlišit kdo je kdo. Jinými slovy, ve spleti různých rádoby vědeckých nebo polovědeckých ekologických hnutí či přístupů je nejasný stav.
Na první pohled se aktivisté Green Peace zdáli spasiteli přírody. Jejich triumfální a dobrodružné mise, často s nasazením života, na záchranu velryb jsou notoricky známé.
Zdá se však, že jejich popularita ze 70. - 80. let minulého století ve druhém tisíciletí mizí. A co velryby? Už plavou v absolutně bezpečných mořských vodách? Neřekl bych. Byl problém s ohroženými velrybami defnitivně vyřešen? Nemyslel bych.
Velryby jsou fascinující tvorové, obdivuji je, ale existuje nesmírné množství jiných fascinujících živáčků a jejich smůlou je, že nejsou tak nápadní, velcí a roztomilí. Z tohoto hlediska se snahy GP zdají být marné. Velryba (jakýkoliv druh z řádu kytovci (Cetacea)) je pouhým zrnkem na velké písečné pláži.
Člověk by rád, aby ho všechny ty ostatní živé bytosti na jeho cestě k absolutní technokracii následovaly, ale jeho vlastní nároky na život tento záměr popírají. Proto pompézní akce GP nemám rád. Mám pocit, že v jejich akcích je něco jiného než ušlechtilý cíl zachovat naše ostatní příbuzné s DNA pro naše další generace. Myslím, že to je snaha se zviditelnit, že je to je snaha být oblíbený a známý, že to je touha po sebevyjádření. Tyto tendence jsou úzce spojeny s mladými. Někteří z nich se sebevyjadřují jako anarchisté, někteří z nich to zkoušejí dělat jako Skin Heads, někteří z nich jako Rowdies, někteří z nich to dělají jako Green Peace (zaměnil bych Mír za Lebky, Zelené lebky) atd..
Mohu se plést, ale neznám jedinou GP akci týkající se nějaké rostliny ve stejném stylu jako s velrybami. Proč potom "Zelený"? Také název jejich slavné lodi, Duhový válečník I (II), se s jejich mírumilovným názvem přiliš nesrovnává.


Čas od času se podobné aktivity ovlivněné GP objevují

u nás a v jiných zemích. Tak můžeme vidět mladé lidi připoutané řetězy ke stromům určeným k pokácení nebo osoby sedící na vrcholech věží nějaké jaderné elektrárny a takto vyjadřující svůj protest proti tomuto využívání jaderné energie. Avšak jde o odpor pouze symbolický, vesměs se nic z těchto problémů neřeší v jejich podstatě. Jaderné elektrárny pořád stojí a dělají svou práci, lesy se nadále kácejí.......a aktivisté mají pocit, že jsou důležití, mají pocit dobře odvedené práce.
Ano, přinejmenším naléhavě upozorňují, čím tvrději, tím lépe. Patálie s přírodou se postrkují na politickou úroveň. Lidské potíže s přírodou začínají řešit politici.
