The Hill Near to the Hotel

The second day of our stay in the morning we planned to visit to the heart of the city. Our hotel Sampiero found itself in its periphery, there was quite a long way to its centre from it. But instead we headed for the Bastia´s centre to the right behind the hotel we changed our minds and our feet turned to the left so that we went on not to the centre of the city but to the foots of the closest hills behind the city. We preferred the Corsican Nature rather than the city itself.

We passed through last several streets lined with family houses with gardens at the sea level but soon we started climbing up to one hill we chose. At the beginning of our climbing there were next lanes, houses and gardens too but the higher we climbed up the lesser their numbers were.

The Fig.2: Palms behind a wall within Bastia´s periphery.
Walking streets and lanes of the periphery I paid my attention to all the green what was growing in gardens. Mostly I had to admire various species of the palms. The palms have been an usual elements of the Corsican gardens and public places. They´ve been prosperous in the Corsican subtropic climate.

Then our last lane changed in a path and we left all the houses behind our backs. We were climbing up to the hill through a wood of cork-trees. There was a lot of ferns of one species in the wood and I idetified them as Pteridium the genus.
Suddenly a dog joined us. It looks like a smaller hound. You can see it on my picture here. It accompanied us as for all our climb up as for the time of the climb down. Often it disappeared but it always returned to us to vanished again. The wood was getting the more sparse gradually as we were climbing higher and higher and then it was changed by dense thorny bushes alongside the near stony and steep path.
The Fig.3: A date palm.
While the way through the wood didn´t allow us to see the landscape under us the much lower bushy vegetation gave a plenty of views over both the land and the sea to us.

As our climb up to the top of the hill continued on I noticed both the various views over the landscape and the interesting composition of the local vegetation cover aroud us. Our choise of the hill was impulsive, it was an improvisation, we didn´t prepare for it in any purposeful way. There was a couple of energy sticks in our bags only and we had no drink with us. The weather was pleasant. The Sun was lightning in the blue sky but its rays didn´t make us dry because a mild breeze blowing from the sea made them cool. This was why we weren´t thirsty.
The Fig.4: The wood of cork-trees with ferns of Pteridium the genus.

I´d like to make several remarks to some of plants I observed during the climb up to the top of the hill. I had no special botanic key to the Corsican flora so that I could identify the plants I saw there exactly. I took pictures of various plants of which identities were unknown to me. My original plan was to determine them, when we came back home, with a help of my special botanic literature and the Internet. Unfortunately it has been waiting for its realization till now. Maybe one day I´ll do it.
We visited to Corsica in October and then in the time when its flora was preparing for the mild Corsican winter, that is when its greatest boom was over.
The hill was the first place where I could get through the typical Corsican thorny bushy vegetation called macchia.

To be continued.

The Fig.6: One of views over the landscape during our climb up to the hill..

Zatímco jsme kráčeli ulicemi a uličkami periférie, věnoval jsem pozornost veškeré zeleni, co rostla v zahradách. Povětšinou jsem musel obdivovat rozmanité druhy palem. Palmy jsou obvyklé prvky korsických zahrad a veřejných míst. V korsickém subtropickém podnebí se jim daří.

The Fig.7: This plant is armed with very sharp thorns.
Stoupali jsme do vrchu jakýmsi hájem korkových dubů. Jak jsme vystupovali výš a výš, háj postupně řídnul a pak jej vystřídala hustá trnitá křoviska podél úzké kamenité a strmé stezky.

The Fig.8: The plant was in fruit, the thorns are seen in detail.
Snad to jednou udělám.

The Three Czech Actresses

To test my skill in catching appearances drawn by heart from time to time I´ve tried to draw some of  celebs of whose faces have been well known. This time I present one picture called The Three Czech Actresses. My foreign friends will hardly know the faces but my Czech friends may know them because they´ve been our leading actresses. They´ve already been older ladies nevertheless they´ve been very favourite with our people. They´ve played a lot of great roles both in theatres and in movies already.

To my foreign friends: you can take the picture as three older ladies talking over cups of coffee, you can like it or dislike it. Still, you may know one of them because this one has gotten her popularity abroad too thanks to her special role in her personal life.
To my Czech friends: Maybe you´ll know the ladies of the boards meaning the world. If you know one of them at least then I´ll be glad if you let me know. They´ve been the leading and famous Czech actresses really.
I´m looking forward to your responses!

Jde opravdu  o přední a slavné české herečky.
Těším se na Vaše odezvy!

Corsica (II)

Our Accommodation, Our Base

When we already thought we would spend our first night in Corsica somewhere outdoors, when almost the whole city was behind our backs (in the direction of the airport) suddenly we saw a hotel on the opposite side of the road. We crossed the Corsican Ralley, walked over the hotel´s court and entered its reception hall. The hotel had three stars and it wasn´t overcrowded. The advantage of the end of the season.
The receptionist was a tan man and his English was limited to a bit of the usual English words. But the language barrier was overcome by the body language, mainly by the gesticulation and the feature. We could examine our room in advance and we were satisfied with it. It was armed with all what we could need: two wide beds, a bathroom with a toilet, a cupboard, night tables, a table and two chairs, a smaller TV set on the table ....you could manage the Internet connection in the reception.
The Fig.2: Our Hotel SAMPIERO.
The only thing was missing in the hotel room: a view of windows. Its windows viewed of the mountains behind the hotel but in theory only. In fact they were blind, small and almost up to the ceiling. Its glasses were blinded with something like some semi-abstract paintings in colour. So that though the room was on the first floor you looked like being accommodated in a cellar. It was a small fault on its beauty to us. We stepped down to the reception and booked the room for following three days. If we were satisfied we would extend our stay up to the very end.
As for the meals our stay in the hotel included breakfasts only, the rest of our diet was up to us.
Our room had one extra advantage. Unlike the rooms on the opposite side of the corridor it was isolated from the noisy traffic of the Corsican Ralley.
The Fig.3: The restaurant.

If I use the expression of the Corsican Ralley I should explain it. I adopted it from the Internet. Some travellers use this nickname for the main Corsican road leading alongside the overall circuit of the island between the sea and the mountains. Of course, this circuit has a lot of turns to the inlad. And the Corsicans enjoy it with a great pleasure.

Unfortunately, smoking inside of the hotel was prohibited as it was established in the whole European Union and therefore I had to smoke out of the hotel, in its court. Standing in the court with my face to the building of the hotel and smoking my first cigarette after our accommodation I noticed that our hotel had a different right wing. It was a separate restaurant with two outdoors sittings, one of them was roofed and the another was unroofed. The unroofed one was nearer to the own restaurant and we took our first late supper there.
The Fig.4: A Venus in the court in front of the hotel Sampiero.
I´ve never forgotten the pleasant evening in the sitting under the night Corsican sky full of stars. From time to time we heard a noise of passing cars rushing the Corsican Rallye leading alongside the wall of the hotel´s court. We were accommodated, we were saturated with an excellent supper and we realized fully we´re in Corsica. And we´re very tired and sleepy too. We wished one thing only: to take a rest, to sleep.
I was falling into sleeping quickly and with a feeling that Corsica was my love at the first glance.

To be continued freely.

Přešli jsme tu korsickou Ralley, přešli jsme hotelový dvůr a vstoupili jsme do recepční haly. Hotel měl tři hvězdičky a nebyl přeplněný.
Pokoj jsme si mohli prohlédnout předem a byli jsme s ním spokojeni. Byl
vybaven vším, co jsme mohli potřebovat: dvěma širokými lůžky, koupelnou a toaletou, skříní, nočními stolky, stolem se dvěma židlemi, na stole menší TV....v recepci jsme si mohli zařídit internetové připojení.
The Fig.6: The opposite side of our hotel´s room.
Budeme-li spokojeni, prodloužíme si pobyt až do konce.

The Fig.7: The windows with no view.
A Korsičané si ho užívají s velkým potěšením.

The Fig.8: The semi-abstraction on the window´s glasses.

A taky jsme byli velice znavení a ospalí.

Corsica (I)

Our Landing Party on the Airport plus Our Arrival in the City

Corsica was my first destination abroad in my lifetime. Me and my son spent one week there. We didn´t make use of any travel agency, we decided to visit to this island in the Mediterranean Sea in our own way.
Why did we choose just Corsica? To say truth I don´t know it exactly. Maybe it was my longing for a romantic and an unusual place, maybe it was an aversion to the notorious foreign destinations visited to by the Czech.
Simply said, when I pronounced the name of this French island it was decided. We would visit to Corsica, the poorest district of France, the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, the island of the bloody revenge, the mountainous island looking like a hand of which the extended forefinger pointed to the France.
The Fig.2

We found no direct flight to Corsica. First we had to fly from The V. Havel´s airport (then still the Ruzyň´s airport) in Prague to Marseille, we overnighted in the Marseille airport´s terminal and then we took an airplain to Bastia, Corsica, in the morning of the next day. All our trip to Corsica (and my first trip abroad in my lifetime) began on Wendesday, 10.06.2010, in the late afternoon.

Bastia the city sits on the nothern eastern coast of the Corsica forefinger. Its airport is quite far behind it.
After our landing on the Bastia´s airport and passing through its airport hall we could enjoy our first impressions from this place out of the airport building. Standing with our backs to its face we looked at the Corsica inland.
It raises in waves of the mountainous terrain almost from the very near flat band of the coast. There was the sea surface behind the airport behind our backs and the hills, the mountains and the valleys in front of us. The blue and sunny sky above our heads, the warm subtropic weather and a lot of various species of palms around us. And a long line of taxi cabs with their drivers standing around them too.
The Fig.3

We chose one of them but he didn´t understand English so that we tried to chose the second one. This
one didn´t understand English too but he mediated our contact with the third taxi driver who was able to understand a simple phrase in English at last: "Please we want to go to the centre of Bastia."
We guessed that the English wasn´t the right language to this destination and our guess confirmed itself immediately at the Bastia airport.
When the taxi cab started going to our goal we were curious of what was going to be the centre of Bastia according to the gay. While the taxi cab was going a near two ways road we could observe surroundings behind its windows. There was the sea to the right side and the mountains to the left one. The way to the centre of Bastia took about half of one hour or so.

The Fig.4
The taxi driver left us with our bags on a pavement next to a frequent crossway at the lower level of the city near to the sea coast. We could see that the most of the houses and streets of Bastia climbed up higher to the hills, that the heart of this city had to be higher than we found ourselves in that moment.
If we were in the heart of it or out of it didn´t matter too much, the important thing was we were there. We managed the landing party, we arrived at the city and now we had to ensure our accomodation.

To the pictures: These photos were the first ones I took in the first day of our stay in Corsica.
1/ Palms on a beach. Our first day in Corsica was the last day for swimming and bathing.
2/ The trunk of one palm in detail.
3/ The crown of one palm.
4/ The beach and the sea.
5/ I´m sorry about the quality of the picture, it slants to the left a little. I was quite tired. Our night in the Marseille´s airport terminal didn´t give much sleep to us, after landing on the Bastia´s airport we took the taxi cab to the centre of the city and then we walked through it to its periphery alongside the coast finding any advisable hotel. It was a late afternoon when I started taking my first photos. It was warm, we carried our heavy bags, we had no sufficient meal and no advisable hotel at our sights yet.
Despite the conditions you can see the contrast: the sea to the right and the mountains to the left.
6/ Bastia climbes up to the slopes of the hills and mountains.
7/ No earthquake! The same cause as on the pictures of the num. 5 and of the num. 6.
8/ Furiani, the village on the hill near to the Bastia periphery. Its picture has decorated the screen of my comp till now. (It´s no this photo. I´m going to show you its enlarged version in some of my next blogs) Only this picture wasn´t taken in the first day but in the second day of our stay of Corsica.

 To be continued.

The Fig.6

Modrá a slunečná obloha nad námi, teplé subtropické počasí a spousta rozmanitých druhů palem kol nás. A také dlouhá řada taxíků s řidiči, kteří kol nich postávali.
The Fig.7

Napravo moře a nalevo hory.
Cesta do centra Bastie trvala asi půl hodiny.
The Fig.8

Zvládli jsme výsadek, dorazili jsme do města a teď jsme si museli zajistit ubytování.

4/ Pláž a moře.
Vzdor těmto podmínkám můžete vidět ten kontrast: moře napravo a hory nalevo.
6/ Bastia šplhá do svahů pahorků a hor.
(Tohle foto to není.

My Yesterday´s Visit to the Jizera´s Mountains, Czech Republic,
or How I Lost My Way

Yesterday (this blog I´m writing a day after), on Saturday (11.06. 2014) in the morning  (at about 09 AM) I and my usual companions started going from Prague to the north of the Czech Republic, to the area of the Jizera´s Mountains near to Tanvald the city. This area has its boundaries with both Germany and Poland.

Our goal was the rocky top with a nice view over the country. This top finds itself in the natural preserve within the Jizera´s Mountains. We left our car in the parking near to the Mountainous Cottage called Smědava and started climbing up by foot to the goal. My companions,
The Fig.2
as usually, climbed much faster than me because from time to time I stopped to take some photos. Often they lost to me in a quite dense mist. It was cloudy, the Sun  permanently hidden behind the grey screen. The temperature had to be between two and six degrees of the C. It wasn´t frost but it was could. The wind was mild and the air was saturated with a haze.

It happened that while I took pictures my companions disappeared in the mist and I became to be alone. I thought that they would wait for me somewhere in a fork but I didn´t see them still. Then I walked to a fork really and my companions nowhere. I had to decided of which the two ways I was going to continue on. The one to my left hand slanted down and the second to my right hand was climing up. I decided to take the second one. Of
The Fig.3
course, I could call them by my mobil phone and come us together again but it seemed to me to be clear that I had to continue on the climbing way to the right, that that´s just the way they was walking on somewhere out of my sight. I hope in our meeting soon but as longer I walked on the more uncertain feelings came to my mind. Were they really ahead of me in the distance? Or weren´t they anywhere in the distance behind my back? My way was first covered with coarse gravel, then reinforced with panels and in the end covered with sand. I tried to find any traces of my companions in the sand but I didn´t find anything certain like that.

I stopped being patient in the end and I used my mobil. "Where are you?!" I asked. "We´re on the top of the view and where are you?!" they repeated to my address. It turned out that they took a turn to the right
The Fig.4
much sooner, they supposed I´d see the turn but I overlooked it and walked on to my fork. I was leaving them behind me in that time already. But my extra way wasn´t so vain. While I was calling with my son my look fell on an interesting repent plant at the margin of the sandy way. "Just now I discovered Lycopodium clavatum here close to the way!" I shouted enthusiasticly.
We met together at my fork in the end. My attendants accomplished our original goal without me. Unlike them I found my snake mosses.
While the American people have experienced the cruel winters with big portions of snow, while the Niagara Falls have frosted to the bone in the West Hemisphere, yesterday I could find the snake moss easy on one of the wide mountainous peat plains of the Jizera´s Mountains in our East hemisphere because our mountains have still been with no snow. Well, there has been something asymmetric in the global warming of the Earth. As if one part of the Earth has been warming up while the second one has been falling into a new glacial period.

To the pictures:
1/ The Jizera´s Mountains with no snow.
2/ The Mountainous Cottage Smědava. Our parking.
3/ The sandy section of our way.
4/ The stream of Bílá Smědava the brook.
5/ An uncombed fur? No, the rests of died grass.
6/ The pitch pine (P. x pseudopumilio).
7/ A back view of the way.
8/ The place of my dilemma.
9/ The way of my decision.

The Fig.6

One Memory of Radostovice The Village from My Childhood

I needn´t introduce Radostovice to you. You know this small village from some of my previous blogs. I spent my childhood for each of my school holidays there.
My Grandfather (Father of my Father) often killed rabbits. He had bred them for meat and furs. He didn´t like this job but he had to do it. He killed them quickly, they hadn´t to wait for their deaths for a long time. I didn´t look at their executions, I only heard their short shrillings immediately before their deaths.
My Grandfather killed the rabbits out of my sight in our garden behind woody sheds. Then I could observe how he pelted and viscerated them in the court. I could see the anatomy of the rabbit in front of my eyes. My stomach was all right, no vomiting....of course, I was sorry about the animals but I had to overcome it and I could understand that mainly they were for meat  there because we´re natural omnivores.
I could have the occasion to see all the transformation from a living rabbit to very tasty meals because my Grandmother was an excellent cook. It was an instructive lesson to me: First I saw various organs, musculature under fur, blood vessels and blood, various bones of the skeleton, I saw the rabbit´s interior and I could make some real idea of  it. In fact I was a witness of dissections, in fact the dissections were my first biological practices. My waking interest in biology wanted to know what was inside.
Second I saw the whole process, the hard reality that if you want to eat you must breed and then kill. I could know it thanks to my time spent in Radostovice the village. The urban citizen knows meat only, he or she doesn´t know anything of living beings bred not for a pleasure but for our stomachs. I think that the country life is much more sound than the urban one. I think that the urban life has given birth to the Vegetarians, the Vegans, the Macrobiotics as well as the Brethtarians and many other unnatural forms of our diet rather than the country life. The man of the city has lost the direct way from a living animal to a portion on a plate. His or her look at this process has been distorted.

Myslím, že to městský život zrodil vegetariány, vegany, makrobiotiky a taky bretariány a mnoho dalších nepřirozených forem našeho stravování spíše než venkovský život.

Wish our children were healthy!

Though the advances of molecular biology and genetics have been more then clear, though you can determine a sex of your unborn child in advance today, there has always been a lot of hidden faults in the genetic information of our embryos and they´ve been able to lead to various kinds of mental and body deviations compatible with the life.

The decision to have a child (or more of them) is a great risk to the end of lives of its parents. The modern genetics can determine a lot of inborn faults but it can´t anticipate complete fates of our sons and daughters. It can´t suppose various accidents and their impacts on them. For example it can´t say: this baby two days old will become a victim of the drug addiction in the twentieth year of its life. Or this little innocent boy will be a mass murder in his age of 26 years.

I drew my memory of a fool from Radostovice the village where I´d spent each of my school holidays. V.T. was one of three children of his parents, he was the same age as my Father in that time but while my Father had cared for his family and went to his work V.T. had still needed a full care of his old parents. His brain stopped its development somewhere in his early childhood. His appearance was adult but his behaviour remained to be at the level of an infant.
I think he wasn´t simple-minded from his very birth. There were gossips in the village that V.T. was almost suffocated with a sausage or so he was eating as a little boy. I´m not sure of it but I can imagine something like this, all the negative consequences following from the lack of oxygen in the brain.

The children have used to be cruel and we were no exception in that time. Often we provoked him to the extent that he left his court and tried to catch us. But his motions were too slow and awkward so that we could escape him easy.

V.T. and his old parents went to scythe grass for their domestic rabbits regulary. Their medow was not too far behind the village and their way passed by just before one of windows of our cottage. As long as I know this was his only work or his help to his parents. I´d often seen them passing by the window: V.T. pulling a small woody wain behind himself and the slouch figures of his old parents walking in his traces with their rake and scythe over their shoulders.
Today I´d say it was their regular way to Golgotha. Their cross was V.T., their son, whether he was afflicted with an inborn disease or he was a victim of an accident, the asphyxy of the brain in his early childhood for instance.

Almost every small village has its harmless fool. Usually he is its natural part, nobody of its villagers laugh at him, they like him, they take him as he is. This is my experience with V.T. in Radostovice the village.

I don´t know what happened with him when his parents died. I´d say he was hospitalized in a mental hospital where he spent the rest of his life. Though he was good for nothing his parents looked after him to the end of their lives. They didn´t throw him, they carried their cross till the very end, they carried their cross silently and in a resigned way. I´d like to devote to them my deep admiration.

Kéž by naše děti byly zdravé!

Děti bývají kruté a my jsme tenkrát nebyly výjimkou.
