We have still been in Ježůvka the preserved habitat at Vsetín the town and it has still been Thursday, (9.6. 2016). Of course, in my narration at least.
Let´s notice the alone bushes in the meadow, I have already meant in the first part, in the more detailed way. Let´s become more familiar with them. Their branches resembled brooms, some of them looked like the brooms quite shabby, i.e. that the bushes had to be very old and then they had to remember the old golden times. It occurred to me that they looked like forgotten brooms of some witches. At the closer view I could see that they were in fruit.
The Fig.3: Juniperus communis with its widespread branches evokes an idea of a tooting grouse
in my head. Ježůvka the preserved habitat at Vsetín the town, Moravian Beskydy the Range.

You can see their strobiles resembling pale greenish berries on my pictures but in fact the fruits are the right strobiles. This low bush or a small tree rarely is our original member of Cupressaceae the family. Its botanic name in Latin is Juniperus communis. You can come upon other members of this family in urban parks and private gardens rather than in wild in my country because they are cultivated and their origins are in the warmer countries.

Also there were numerous non flowering herbs with marked massive leafy rosettes at the upper level of the habitat. Their leaves were erected and widely lanceolar. If you looked into their centers you could see one big berry like bud in each of them. According to various clues I judge that the leafy rosettes on my photos belong to Gladiolus imbricatus (Iridaceae the family). Unfortunately, we were not lucky because we were in the right place but at the wrong time to be able to enjoy its flowering phase.

An additional notice:
As soon as my friend Adam Majer saw this latest post he responded to the photos of the leafy rosettes with buds in their centers (the fig.7 and the fig.8). He thinks they belong to Colchicum autumnale (Liliaceae) rather than Gladiolus imbricatus. Well, this may be an example of how the crowd sourcing can work, too. The outcome can be more exact information to the author as well as to his readers. I thank you Adam for your correction!

Listy byly vzpřímené a široce kopinaté.

Three Days In Moravian Beskydy The Range

Ježůvka The Preserved Habitat at Vsetín The Town

The Part Three/ The More Detailed Exploration of The Meadow
The Fig.2: Gymnadenia conopsea, a whole view of the orchid. Ježůvka the preserved habitat
at Vsetín the town, Moravian Beskydy the Range. 6.9. 2016. Samsung Galaxy, S7.

There are a lot of meadows in this world and each of them is an authentic composition of various herbs growing together. Each of them is a specific ecosystem with its specific inhabitants from the animal kingdom.
Usually the right meadows are the matter of open habitats exposed to the full sunshine. If I may exaggerate a bit then I would say that a forest or a wood is in fact a meadow, too, because its trees are analogies to grasses forming meadows. Then the meadow is a miniature forest in which tall or lower kinds of grasses correspond with the trees forming a base of a sylvan growth.
The Fig.3: The most abundant orchid species, as you can
see on this picture, was Gymnadenia conopsea.
Ježůvka the preserved habitat at Vsetín the town,
6.9. 2016. Samsung Galaxy, S7.

But unlike the trees the grassy growth is much more tolerant to the light penetration. The grasses are so fine and slim that neither the highest density of its individuals screen the soil which it grows out from. Yes I know there is so called the light forests allowing the Sun rays to penetrate more to the ground under the trunks of their trees with the more abundant composition of their herbaceous floors but in general the grasses are much more kind to the light penetration than the trees. This is why seed of various other species of the plant kingdom have a chance to germinate and to continue on in their growing in the grassy medium. Then the meadow is much more willing to share its place in the Sun with many other herbs than the forest is able to do it.

Of course, there are various kinds of meadows and not all of them are so tolerant to share their places in the Sun with other species of grasses but with their own species. I am not going to enumerate concrete kinds of the meadows here, you can do it by yourself, or you can recall various kinds of the meadows you have seen so far with no respect of whether they have been in your country or anywhere else throughout the world.

The most democratic meadows are the mountainous ones I would say. Their species diversity is astounding, breathtaking. I could spend all hours long in the meadow of Ježůvka the habitat at Vsetín the town and yet I could not be sure of that if I could describe all the plants growing together there.
The Fig.4: Two spikes of G. conopsea in more detail.

Often the plant compositions of the mountainous meadows consist of some species of Orchidaceae the family among many other plant species. As you have known already, the orchids were our main goal in the course of our stay at Moravian Beskydy the Range. And the meadow in the slope of Ježůvka the preserved habitat exceeded all our expectations from this point of view. Even though the orchid topic were dominant in our plans I tried not to omit more species belonging to other families, the most marked or the most often at least (I will publish some of them in next parts). Simply said, if you focus your attention on a detail on a picture then you cease seeing its other components. But you can change the two modes as you need to get the more complex knowledge of the object of your exploration. This has been what I have tried to do during our field trips or what I have still learnt to do better and better.

In Ježůvka the habitat we found and photo-documented several orchids of which two species were quite new to me and to my two companions as well. First I could see and examine our rare orchid Gymnadenia conopsea  in wild. It was the most numerous orchid of all we could see in the magical slope. According to botanists this species has three subspecies in my country but I do not want to go into details. My experiences with this species are too fresh so that I could judge exactly if my plants belong to G. conopsea subsp. conopsea or to G.c. subsp. montana or to G.c. subsp. densiflora. But there are no doubts that the orchid on my photos is Gymnadenia conopsea. Maybe there will be an expert among you who will be able to identify my plants of this species at the subspecies level.
The Fig.5: A part of G. conopsea inflorescence in more detail. You can see a mash of its
floral morphology: purple long spurs, scrolled ovaries and pink/white tepals with no purple
points, blotches or lines on them.

Once, a long time before I had read an interesting article in a number of the Biological Papers, one of our biological magazines. It was devoted to the influences of the cosmic rays from the outer Universe (an explosion of a distance supernova for example) on the species diversity here on the Earth. Authors of the article pointed out to the fact that the mountainous slopes and valleys had the best expositions to the Sun rays as well as to various kinds of the cosmic rays with the higher mutation effects to the living organisms inhabiting the regions of the higher altitudes. The idea was very interesting to me. The mountains as the natural mutation labs in which the more often frequencies of origins of new living forms of various taxonomic values could explain all the mountainous generosity.
The Fig.6: Also we recorded a few of Platanthera bifolia
plants growing in the meadow nearby the sylvan edge.
The plants were smaller, not so stout as the ones we had
seen in Pluskovec the hill in that morning.
Ježůvka the preserved habitat, 6.9. 2016. Samsung Galaxy,
S7.

I have had no idea of that if this interpretation of the mountainous rich species diversity (with the plants at least!) has been right or not till this time. Maybe a next search will show more. But let´s back to the meadow in the mountainous slope called Ježůvka at Vsetín the town.

The grasses forming a base of the meadow of the habitat we visited to have been typical of a very fine consistence as well as of a light green/yellow coloration. And just in this very fine grassy medium first I could meet next orchid I had known in theory till that time. Hardly we made several careful steps in the meadow my two hounds turned my attention to a new plant they registered a couple meters above me. They could not identify the plant but they could guess its relationship with Orchidaceae the family. A while later I could confirm their assumption and I could state that the plant was Traunsteinera globosa, my first one in wild. Not on a picture in a botanic book but rightly in front of my eyes.
This species was not abundant in Ježůvka the habitat. Though we examined the whole meadow from down to up we found three plants only. Of course, we could omit next plants of this species within the locality but it was sure that T. globosa grew there in a very sporadic way only.

The Fig.7: The same plant of P. bifolia as it is on the previous picture. The plant started
flowering from down to up.
Ježůvka the preserved habitat at Vsetín the town, Moravian Beskydy the Range.
6.9. 2016, Samsung Galaxy, S7.

The Fig.8: Our (my) first Traunsteinera globosa the orchid. This finding was especially joyful
to me. But we found three plants of this species only in this habitat.
Ježůvka the preserved habitat at Vsetín the town, Moravian Beskydy the Range.
6.9. 2016. Samsung Galaxy, S7.

Hory jako přírodní mutační laboratoře, v nichž častější frekvence vzniků nových živých forem o různých taxonomických hodnotách mohly by vysvětlovat veškerou tu horskou štědrost.

A Sleepy Atmosphere in a Settlement (I)
The Fig.1: As we were passing by last cottages of Líský the village my attention
was attracted with this sleeping cat. I think that it is a good example of an
atmosphere of the lonely place. 7.30. 2016. Taken with my Canon.

Yesterday, on the 30-th July 2016 in the morning, me and my two usual partners parked the car in Líský the settlement lying in the landscape behind our national symbol, Říp the mountain.
Our first target was a lookout standing in a flat landscape behind and above the settlement.
As we were passing by last cottages I took two shots of a sleeping cat on an outer window sill.
I would say that the cat is a nice show of the atmosphere dominating the settlement in the morning time when we found ourselves there.

Včera, 30. července 2016 dopoledne, jsme já a moji obvyklí partneři zaparkovali auto v osadě Líský ležící v krajině za naším národním symbolem, horou Řípem.

The Part Three/Introduction

Ježůvka,
The Preserved Steep Slope at The Periphery of Vsetín The Walachian Town

This was our second trip on Thursday (6.9. 2 016) in the afternoon. It was my first contact with this town, my Mother's birthplace. We went to Vsetín the town by Vendy's car from Velké Karlovice the settlement after we took some meal in a local restaurant. The car had to cover a distance of about 18 km long only. We were in Vsetín the town within a short time.
The Fig.2: Ježůvka - the small world for itself. A view of its left side from its
medial section. The wedge of this very precious meadow is surrounded by a
mixed forest. Also you can see sporadic bushy formations dispersed
throughout the meadow.

To be true my first contact with my Mother´s birthplace was minimal because our main purpose was to visit to Ježůvka the preserved steep slope at a periphery of the town. This interesting locality was discovered by Vendy and it happened by accident when Vendy was browsing on the Internet to get some information of the region we decided to visit to. Due to this and additional sources we knew very well in advance that the locality was extremely interesting from the point of botany, we could read about concrete rare species occurring there. But one thing was to know it and the second to see it. We added this place to our list of interesting places we could like to visit to automatically.
The Fig.3: The upper and the widest part of this habitat is
lined with the sky only. Again you can see some
woody solitaires growing in the meadow.

Then my first contact with Vsetín the town was peripheral. Vendy drove his car to our target through marginal parts of the town and they did not do any extra impressions to me. They were grey, boring and indifferent. Fortunately, soon the peripheral nothing, all the colorless and dirty houses, was behind us and the car was climbing a slanted field path up to our destination. Vendy wanted to get his car as close to it as possible.

The place where Vendy decided to stop his car was surrounded by a forest. The field path continued on and it disappeared in it. In a slope behind us to the left (where we went from) we could see several last cottages. We walked the path for a while only and then we took a right turn and we started climbing a near sylvan path up among trees. We turned our feet to the left in the middle of the climbing and we walked on alongside the slope till we went to a deep near sylvan valley with a stream running through it. This was last obstacle on our way to Ježůvka the preserved habitat. We had to step down, to jump over the stream and to climb an opposite arduous pitch up. Naturally, my two companions accomplished the top of the opposite cliff as the first. Now it occurs to me that it was as if Ježůvka the castle lifted its falling pond up to defend its independence.
The Fig.4: One of my first shot in the meadow was this male of Polyommatus
icarus. It was flying from one flower to another but in the end it rested on the
yellow flower for a longer while and next good photo was taken.
Ježůvka the preserved habitat at Vsetín the town. 6.9. 2016. Taken by the Canon.

The opposite cliff was covered with trees and bushes so that you could catch branches and trunks. They made the climb up easier. And while I was reaching for the top of the cliff only my vanguard was walking through last defensive bushy barrier already and its loud calls were suggesting that just we conquered a botanic Eden. A while later I passed through last bushes in my way, too, and I could scan an open room in front of my eyes. It was a slope rising up to my right side. It was arrow-headed in shape with its nearest end several meters under me to my left side and with its widest opposite end highly above me to my right side. This open wedge was surrounded by a forest with the exception for its widest upper part highly above us. It was lined with a blue sky with few changing white clouds.
The Fig.5: Notice the numerous thin pink and purple spikes in the meadow! That look was
astounding to us. Some orchids were there! The lowest part of Ježůvka the preserved habitat
at Vsetín the town. 6.9. 2 016. Photo by the Canon camera.

As for the surface of this slanted free room it was covered with a meadow and just this meadow was the right treasure of the fort called Ježůvka. The meadow´s continuity was interrupted with few bushy formations dispersed in the slope solitary. We were standing on its threshold and we were going to enjoy it, to examine it. Then, slowly and very carefully, we stepped in it and it devoured us totally.

The Fig.6: A closer view of the spikes on the previous picture. We could see
that we could add a new orchid to our list of the found orchids. This was how
the Gymnadenia genus appeared to us at the first time.

Jeli jsme do Vsetína Vendovým autem z osady Velké Karlovice, poté, co jsme něco pojedli v místní restauraci.

The Fig.7: Yet one view of the spikes of Gymnadenia the orchid. Its generous
name in Czech means the one having five fingers, i.e. the five fingered.

Byly šedé, nudné a neutrální. Naštěstí tohle periferní nic, všechny ty bezbarvé a špinavé domy, bylo brzy za námi a auto šplhalo jakousi polní kosou cestou vzhůru k cíli naší cesty. Venda k němu chtěl auto dostat co možná nejblíže.
The Fig.8: While I was fretting and photographing at the lower level of the slope
my son was taking a rest at its upper level and he took this shot from his place.
It was taken by him from the meadow literally.

Polní cesta pokračovala dál a mizela v něm. Ve svahu za námi (odkud jsme přijeli) vlevo jsme mohli vidět několik posledních chalup. Po cestě jsme šli jenom chvíli a pak jsme zahnuli doprava a začali stoupat vzhůru úzkou lesní cestou mezi stromy. V polovině svahu jsme stočili nohy doleva a dál kráčeli podél svahu, dokud jsme nedošli k hlubokému úzkému lesnímu sedlu, jímž protékal potok.

Pokud jde o povrch tohoto kosého volného prostoru, porůstala ho louka a právě tahle louka byla tím pravým pokladem pevnosti zvané Ježůvka. Kontinuitu louky narušovalo několik málo křovitých formací rozptýlených ve stráni solitérně. Stáli jsme na jejím prahu a chystali jsme se užít si ji, prozkoumat ji. Pak jsme do ní zvolna a velmi opatrně vstoupili a ona nás zcela pohltila.

Three Days in Moravian Beskydy The Range

Part II / The Climb Down
The Fig.1: An inflorescence of Orchis mascula ssp. signifera, at a margin of our path in the
upper sylvan section of Pluskovec the hill nearby Velké Karlovice, Moravian
Beskydy the Range. 6.9. 2016, Samsung Galaxy, S7.

Well, our way back was not the same. First the path went through an open terrain on the back of the hill called Pluskovec so that we could admire other panoramas of the surrounding landscape. But soon it started becoming steeper down and our views of the landscape were screened by the forest again. From time to time there were open places in this slanted section but then our way turned to the right and entered the longest sylvan section falling down to the foot of the hill.
The Fig.2: Flowers of O. mascula ssp. signifera in more

Again I started to concentrate myself on the original purpose of this trip. Again we found ourselves in the habitat where the Coral Root Orchid could grow. Of course, again I stressed this fact to my companions. Maybe it was useless because they knew what to do by themselves already. They stepped down several meters against me and soon they announced their first findings but neither of them included the Coral Root Orchid.

As we stepped down the upper sylvan section my companions against me found lonely plants of the only subspecies belonging to Orchidaceae the family: Orchis mascula ssp. signifera. As you have already known this subspecies was the first orchid we discovered at the beginning of our first trip at the foot of Pluskovec the hill in the wet ditch alongside our way. Unlike this sample with its flowers fading away the plants from the upper section of the hill were in full flower and then I could take much better photos of both their whole appearances and various details of their spikes, flowers and leaves. They were found alongside either sides of the stony rugged path from time to time. Always a plant per a time. We never found this subspecies to grow further from the way in the sylvan terrain.
The Fig.3: Leaves of O. mascula ssp. signifera with its
typical miniature pointing which is the most intensive at
their bases. Pluskovec the hill in Moravian Beskydy.

The lower we stepped down the slope the more often we left the path and entered the forest with the only purpose to find one plant of the Coral Root Orchid at least. But neither my younger "hounds" trying to find our needle in dead leaves lying among trees nor me trying to do the same behind them were successful in it. If it grew there really we were not lucky to meet it.

The lowest level of our climb down brought something new to us at last. While my two companions further against me were ferreting among trees silently suddenly I noticed a new element behind their backs. They did not see it. Maybe it was so because they had never seen this species of the orchid till that time. A while later it turned out that we came upon quite a numerous population of Platanthera bifolia the orchid in this place. Every plant grew separately from the others, no dense clusters together. The plants were in various flowering phases and I would say that they were stouter and taller than the plants I had seen in open habitats a time before. Indeed, a time later this observation could be confirmed in the courses of our next field trips in Moravian Beskydy the Range. Some plants had both a flowering spike and a brown spike in fruit at the same time. Whether they were flowering for the second time or the adult spike in fruit was a rest of the previous season remained to be a question to me. This finding was my first sylvan population of Platanthera bifolia I have ever seen.
The Fig.3: A view of one inflorescence of O. mascula ssp. signifera. This species - O.
mascula
- has two subspecies: O. mascula ssp. mascula and O. mascula ssp. signifera.
O. mascula ssp. mascula does not occur in this region.
Pluskovec the hill in Moravian Beskydy the Range, 6.9. 2016. Samsung Galaxy, S7.

Though the basic scheme of the flower morphology is in common within Orchidaceae the family flowers of separate species as it can be seen with Platanthera bifolia, too, show their own specific beauty. Six creme white tepals plus one creme white and long thin spur (a back part of the labium) form something like a pinwheel.
The Fig.4: My first orchid of Platanthera bifolia the species found in a lower sylvan section of
Pluskovec the hill in Moravian Beskydy the Range. 6.9. 2016, Samsung Galaxy, S7.

If you look at an inflorescence of this species in more detail (see my photos here) you can see that its flowers are not in the same positions. It is as they would be in different phases of their turns. Some flowers have their labia in the upper positions and some of them have their labia in the lower positions. The lower position of the labium is accomplished by the process called the resupination.

The Fig.5: The inflorescence of P. bifolia in the closer view. You can see that flowering occurs
from down to up. To me the flowers resemble small white pinwheels. Pluskovec the hill near by
Velké Karlovice the settlement, Moravian Beskydy the Range. 6.9. 2016. Samsung Galaxy, S7.

The thicker part under tepals is the ovary and you can see that its surface has scrolled striae. Just by its scrolling tepals can gain their right position, i.e. with the labium down. In other words, when flowers open at the first time their labia are in the upper position but then by the screwing motion of the ovaries the labia can take their lower normal position.
The Fig.6: Flowers of Platanthera bifolia in more detail. You can see their scrolled ovaries. By
their scrolling motion the labium (the yelowish/greenish long near tongue on the picture)
take its lower position in the flower. Also notice the long thin spurs, they are back parts of the labia.
A potential pollinator must be equipped with a long tool to reach for the nectar.
Pluskovec the hill, Moravian Beskydy the Range, 6.9. 2016. Samsung Galaxy, S7.

At the very foot of the hill, between the stream and the path leading back to Velké Karlovice the settlement I took my best photos of the most abundant orchid growing in the local steep sylvan slopes there. The place was on the very boundary of its shadowy kingdom.
The Fig.7: Some plants of P. bifolia the orchid had two spikes: one in fruit and one in flower or
in buds as it is the case of the plant on this picture. Also you can see the sylvan surroundings
in which this orchid grew. The brown spike shows where you can find the plant on the picture.
Its second spike in buds is to the right from the first one.

In that moment when I saw two or three nice plants of this species and I was going to photo them by my smart phone and just I was lying on my side near to them the Sun rays were penetrating through branches above me and impacted on the objects of my eminent interest.

lower brown part is to the right) with P. bifolia the orchid.

Just in that moment I started taking my best shots of Neottia nidus-avis the orchid what I have ever taken so far. It was last and great point behind our first field trip in Moravian Beskydy the Range.

The Fig.9: Fruitful capsules of P. bifolia in more detail.

Čím níže jsme svahem sestupovali, tím častěji jsme cestu opouštěli a vstupovali jsme do lesa s jediným cílem najít alespoň jednu rostlinu korálice.

The Fig.10: Flowers of Polygonatum verticillatum were
fading away already. It is no orchid, its place is in Liliaceae
the family. Pluskovec the hill, Moravin Beskydy the Range.
6.9. 2016, Samsung Galaxy, S7.

Některé květy mají pysky v horním postavení a některé z nich mají pysky v dolním postavení. Spodního postavení pysku je dosahováno procesem zvaným resupinace.
The Fig.11: An inflorescence of Ajuga genevensis in more
detail. Pluskovec the hill, Moravian Beskydy the Range.
6.9. 2016. Samsung Galaxy, S7.
