Next Sightseeing the Local Plant Collections

We were hungry and thirsty. The Botanic Garden was our second visit in that day already. In the morning hours we visited one interesting place in the mountainous inland. I am going to describe this trip as soon as I finish up my narration of Mascarin the Botanic Garden.

The plane section of the garden offered a good occasion to take a meal as well as a drink because soon we discovered a small restaurant with a roofed garden in one marginal part of it. But before than we took sits inside I continued on in my photographing all what the place was attracting with to me. I was walking side paths of the central plateau and taking pictures of various plants and various corners of the place.

While I was photographing my partners occupied a sitting in the roofed garden. Mostly the sittings were free there. The numbers of visitors of the Botanic Garden were low, no big crowds of people. I chose a fish steak with a vegetable and fried potatoes from the menu. While we were waiting for our meals I could see people sitting in our surroundings. Mostly older women or younger ones with children, from time to time some older or younger pairs came to the restaurant to eat. Some guests had a dog with them. Two or three cats were wandering freely about the ground searching for some rests of food under tables. Serving personal consisted of three or four waitresses. They could speak in English a bit only but they were no problem to understand to our demands.

Our dinner was finished up with coffee and then we left the restaurant to continue on in our next sightseeing. Karel was handicapped with his ill right knee a little. Long walks were nothing good to him because the more his knee was forced to work the more it pained. This was why Karel stayed nearby the restaurant while me, Venda and Robert continued in our walking paths to more distant parts of the Botanic Garden. Karel accompanied us for a short stretch only and then he came back to the place nearby the restaurant and the larger basin as well.

In advance I knew roughly that the Garden was divided into three or four main sections. The first section could try to show the original composition of the local flora. The second could be devoted to the succulent flora and the third could provide a show of the orchids to visitors. Of course, I was looking forward to the orchids especially.

Well, one thing is a wish to see all the plant expositions in detail and the second is its realization. In the end it has always been a mix of compromises and improvisation. You have never been able to see all what you wanted to see. A systematical examination done step by step and gradually has never been possible completely. I would have to be alone and I would have to visit to the object of my interest more times to be able to come my idea of the perfect examination to reality. Naturally, this has always been impossible. And so I have always thought to myself that lesser has been more than nothing.

Now let´s come back to the place with the restaurant for a while. I was interested in the plants floating on the surface of the larger basin in the center of the place as you can see it on the Fig.1 and the Fig.2. I could see a lot of a cor like leaves covering the water surface and it was no problem to me to place them into Nymphaeaceae the family. But to determine the plant exactly in a botanic way was not so easy to me. First I thought that the plant did not flower. A while later I noticed smaller yellow flowers above the surface at a more distance from the stony margin I was standing at. I used Nikon the camera from our enter in the Botanic Garden and so I took some pictures of the smaller flowers at the higher resolution. I did not know the plant. I found a panel with its botanic name but it was nowhere there. The pictures remained in the memory of Nikon the camera and a time later they were copied to the central photo-archive in my main comp.

Only yesterday (on 3.6. 2018) while I have been preparing this part I tried to determine the water unknown. Of course, it was already at my home background a month or so after our comeback to Prague, Czech republic. First I came out of my old idea of Nymphaeaceae the family. I asked the Google for to find photos of this family. It fulfilled my wish immediately. I could browse through many photos of various species within this family but none of them resembled my plant to me. The smaller flowers of my unknown and the negative outcome as for Nymphaeaceae the family were dissolving the first hypothesis out slowly. It occurred to me to try some next families including plants growing in the water environment. Alismataceae the family was the second attempt but again my browsing through photos of various plants of this family showed no similarities with my plant. To make my searching for the identity of my plant more exact I took my two enlarged photos of the flowers from the photo-archive and I enlarged them once again with the help of the photo-explorer at the maximal resolution. Then I realized it! The detailed examination showed that the crown tips of the flowers were covered with marked hair on their upper surfaces! This might be a promised trait at last! This symptom evoked the flowers of Menyanthes trifoliata in my mind. The two sorts of flowers were almost the same morphology. Therefore my next way was to try photos of the members of Menyanthaceae the family. Soon I saw what I wanted to. You can see Nymphoides geminata of Menyanthaceae the family on the Fig.6/a to the Fig.6/d. By this detective story I want to demonstrate that the ways to the exact species identification of any living organism have not always been straightforward or easy.

Měli jsem hlad a žízeň. Botanická zahrada byla toho dne už naší druhou návštěvou. V dopoledních hodinách jsme navštívili jedno zajímavé místo v horském vnitrozemí. Hodlám tento výlet popsat, jakmile dokončím vyprávění o Botanické zahradě Mascarin.

Plochá sekce nabízela dobrou příležitost dát si jídlo a též pití, protože jsme brzy objevili malou restauraci se zastřešenou zahrádkou v jedné z jejích okrajových částí. Ale dříve, než jsme se uvnitř usadili, pokračoval jsem dál ve focení všeho, co mne upoutalo. Chodil jsem po postranních pěšinách centrálního plató a dělal si obrázky různých rostlin a různých zákoutí toho místa.

Zatímco jsem fotil, parťáci zabrali jedno sezení v zastřešené zahrádce. Většinou tam byla volná sezení. Počet návštěvníků Botanické zahrady byl nízký, žádné velké zástupy lidí. Vybral jsem si z menu rybí steak se zeleninou a smaženými bramborami. Zatímco jsme čekali na naše jídla, mohl jsem pozorovat lidi sedící v okolí. Vesměs starší ženy nebo mladší s dětmi, občas se přišly do restaurace najíst nějaké starší nebo mladší páry. Někteří hosté měli s sebou psa. Dvě či tři kočky volně bloumaly po zemi a pátraly po zbytcích potravy pod stolky. Obslužný personál sestával ze tří či čtyř číšnic. Anglicky mluvily jen málo, ale neměly problém rozumět našim požadavkům.

Oběd zakončila káva a poté jsme restauraci opustili, abychom pokračovali v další prohlídce. Karla trochu hendikepovalo nemocné pravé koleno. Dlouhé procházky pro něj nebyly nic dobrého, protože čím víc bylo jeho koleno nuceno fungovat, tím víc bolelo. Proto Karel zůstal poblíž restaurace, zatímco já, Venda a Robert jsme pokračovali v chůzi po pěšinách do vzdálenějších částí Botanické Zahrady. Karel nás doprovodil jen krátký úsek a pak se vrátil na místo poblíž restaurace a také té větší nádrže.

Předem jsem zhruba věděl, že zahrada je rozdělena na tři či čtyři sekce. První se měla pokoušet ukázat původní skladbu místní květeny. Druhá měla být věnována sukulentní floře a třetí měla poskytovat návštěvníkům ukázku orchidejí. Přirozeně, že jsem se těšil zvlášť na orchideje.

Nu, jedna věc je přání vidět všechny rostlinné expozice podrobně a druhá je jeho realizace. Nakonec je to pokaždé směska kompromisů a improvizace. Nikdy nemůžete vidět vše, co jste vidět chtěli. Systematická prohlídka prováděná krok za krokem a postupně nikdy není možná kompletně. Abych mohl svou představu dokonalé prohlídky uskutečnit, musel bych být sám a musel bych objekt svého zájmu navštívit vícekrát. Tohle je přirozeně vždycky nemožné. A tak si pokaždé pomyslím, že méně je více než nic.

Teď se na chvilku vraťme k místu s restaurací. Zajímaly mne rostliny plovoucí na hladině té větší nádrže ve středu místa, jak to vidíte na obr.1 a obr.2. Viděl jsem spoustu srdčitých listů pokrývajících hladinu a nebylo pro mne problémem zařadit je do čeledi leknínovitých (Nymphaeaceae). Ale určit rostlinu přesně botanicky pro mne tak snadné nebylo. Zprvu jsem si myslel, že rostlina nekvete. Po chvilce jsem si povšiml menších žlutých květů nad hladinou ve větší vzdálenosti od kamenného okraje, u kterého jsem stál. Od vstupu do Botanické Zahrady jsem používal aparát zn. Nikon a tak jsem udělal několik fotek těch menších květů ve větším rozlišení. Rostlinu jsem neznal. Hledal jsem tabulku s jejím botanickým názvem, ale nikde tam nebyla. Obrázky zůstaly v paměti Nikonu a po čase byly zkopírovány do centrálního foto-archivu v mém hlavním kompu.

Obr.19: Při další cestě Botanickou Zahradou jsem narazil na pompézní porost,
který šplhal vzhůru po kmeni stromu a rostl rovněž kolem jeho paty. I když
jsem si vědom velkých podobností s několika blízkými příbuznými rody v
čeledi áronovitých (Araceae), myslím, že tohle je monstera rozkošná (Monstera

Teprve včera, zatímco jsem chystal tuto část, jsem tu vodní neznámou zkusil určit. Ovšem, že to už bylo v domácím zázemí, asi měsíc po návratu do Prahy. Nejdřív jsem vycházel ze staré představy o čeledi leknínovitých (Nymphaeaceae). Požádal jsem Google o vyhledání fotek z této čeledi. Mé přání splnil okamžitě. Mohl jsem procházet mnoha fotkami různých druhů v této čeledi, ale žádná z nich mi mou rostlinu nepřipomínala. Menší květy neznámé a záporný výsledek pokud jde o čeleď leknínovitých (Nymphaeaceae) pomalu první hypotézu rozpustily. Napadlo mě zkusit nějaké další čeledě zahrnující rostliny, které rostou ve vodním prostředí. Druhým pokusem byla čeleď žabníkovitých (Alismataceae), ale opět mé procházení fotkami různých rostlin z této čeledi žádné podobnosti s mou rostlinou neukázalo. Abych pátrání po totožnosti rostliny zpřesnil, vyzvedl jsem si z foto-archivu své dvě zvětšené fotky květů a znovu jsem je pomocí foto-prohlížeče zvětšil v maximálním rozlišení. Tehdy jsem si to uvědomil! Podrobná prohlídka ukázala, že korunní plátky květů porůstají na horním povrchu nápadné chlupy! Tohle snad mohla být konečně slibná stopa! Tenhle symptom mi v mysli vyvolal květy vachty trojlisté (Menyanthes trifoliata). Oba typy květů byly skoro téže morfologie. Proto další cesta byla zkusit fota příslušníků čeledi vachtovitých (Menyanthaceae). Brzy jsem uviděl, co jsem vidět chtěl. Na obrázcích 6/a - 6/d můžete vidět plavín (Nymphoides geminata) z čeledi vachtovitých (Menyanthaceae). Tímto detektivním příběhem chci doložit, že cesty k přesnému druhovému určení jakéhokoliv živého organizmu nejsou pokaždé přímočaré nebo jednoduché.

As my fateful reader have already known very well my visits of botanical gardens during my stays at various islands have become to be a tradition with the exceptions for Sicily the island and Corsica the island where I could see a free vegetation only. But after this pause the tradition got its occasion in Reunion the island again.

One day we drove to one of about three botanic gardens in the island. Its large areal has been stretching out higher in a vast slope rising up above the Indian Ocean. Venda stopped the car not too far under the main entrance. We got out and first we were looking around the surroundings in front of the main entrance. This botanic garden was the closest one to our base in St. Leu the town. In fact it was somewhere down at the coast quite out of our sights. When you stopped walking in front of the main entrance two amazing views were offering to your eyes. The first, while you were standing with your back to the main entrance, showed a blue free surface of the Indian Ocean deeply under you without you could glance anything of its coastline. Besides there were stony steps under your feet going the slope lower so that you could enjoy the view of the ocean at the lower levels under the asphalt road separating this decreasing stretch of the slope from its rising section including the areal of the botanic garden on the opposite side.
The second view allowed you to look at the main entrance into the Botanic Garden. The entrance gate was opened and then you could see what it was behind it. There was a woody stand to the left immediately behind it and shallow wider steps going up to somewhere to the higher levels of the botanic garden rightly in front of your eyes. The sides of this rising up central steps were lined with trees and bushes casting shadows on the steps thus making a visitor´s climb up much more pleasant in the tropical climate of the place.

Venda walked the asphalt road going mildly up further above the entrance to a plateau where a smaller castle stood facing to the Indian Ocean. You can see his photos of this object in this part, too. The exact purpose of this castle or its history has not been known to me. As for me I was staying nearby the main entrance and I was photographing both the views meant in the paragraph above. I was looking forward to our enter into the Botanic garden.

A while later Robert bought tickets at the woody stand and we could start going the long steps up to the own open areal of the Botanic Garden at the higher levels of the vast long slope exposed to the South West part of the Indian Ocean.

On their way up the steps were interrupted by wider landings. Paradoxically, as I was going the steps up slowly I realized myself the ridiculous fact that this Botanic Garden was one large greenhouse itself. The temperature had to rise up at 30 degrees of Centigrade at least in that time not speaking of the high relative air humidity of about 70 to 80 percent.

There was a circular stony basin in the center of one landing in the climb up. The water surface of the basin was covered with a dense growth of about three water plants. I stopped for a while to photograph them. I recognized three water plants on the surface of the circular pool. Two famous water weeds of the tropical flows of the world: the water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes, Araceae the family) and the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes, Pontederiaceae the family). The two species showed out their interesting and beautiful morphology, especially the water hyacinth because I was lucky to encounter on specimens in flower. The third species was lesser noticeable than the latter meant plants and I have thought it to be a member of Lemnaceae the family. Its minute bright green leaves occupied almost the whole rest of the water surface among the other species.

Both the right side and the left one of the stairs were lined with beds of various lower bushes or tufts of manifold herbs as well as with an alley of one tree species of which specimens were tall enough to give a pleasant shadow to a visitor´s climbing the stairs up or down.

There were side paths turning to the left part of the garden from some landings on the way the stairs up but I used none of them because I had no time to do it. You see, my partners were waiting for me on the top of the stairs already with a great impatience. To be true, the visits of botanic gardens have not been in the sphere of their most favorite interests. If I were absent in our team the botanic gardens would be the last thing what they would long for to see. Nevertheless, I must add that they were tolerant to my interests and they could appreciate both the whole arrangement of the botanic garden and the beauty of some separate plant species.

minute leaves of a species maybe belonging to Lemnaceae the family but my
examination of this tiny water species at the higher resolution does not
confirm this assumption too much. More variants occurred to me (a tiny water
fern for instance) but I did not photograph the tiny thing at the closer view.

Jak můj věrný čtenář už velmi dobře ví, mé návštěvy botanických zahrad během pobytů na různých ostrovech staly se tradicí s výjimkou Sicílie a Korziky, kde jsem mohl pozorovat jenom volnou vegetaci. Avšak na ostrově Reunionu dostala po těchto pauzách tradice příležitost zase.

Jednoho dne jsme si zajeli do jedné z asi tří botanických zahrad na ostrově. Její areál se rozkládá výše v ohromném svahu, který se zvedá nad Indickým oceánem. Venda zastavil auto nepříliš daleko pod hlavním vchodem. Vystoupili jsme a nejdřív jsme se před hlavním vchodem rozhlíželi po okolí. Tahle botanická zahrada byla naší základně v městečku St. Leu nejblíže. Vlastně byla kdesi dole na pobřeží zcela mimo náš dohled. Když jste se v chůzi zastavili před hlavním vchodem, vašim zrakům se nabízely dva úžasné výhledy. První, zatímco jste stáli zády k hlavnímu vchodu, ukazoval modrou volnou hladinu Indického oceánu hluboko pod vámi, aniž byste mohli zahlédnout cokoliv z jeho pobřeží. Navíc, pod nohama jste měli kamenné schodiště sestupující svahem níž, abyste si mohli užívat vyhlídek na oceán na nižších úrovních pod asfaltkou, jež oddělovala tento klesající úsek svahu od stoupajícího úseku, který zahrnoval areál botanické zahrady na opačné straně.
Druhý pohled vám dovoloval dívat se na hlavní vchod do botanické zahrady. Vstupní brána byla otevřená, tudíž jste mohli vidět, co je za ní. Vlevo hned za ním byl dřevěný stánek a přímo před vašimi zraky stoupalo kamsi k vyšším úrovním botanické zahrady mělké širší schodiště. Strany tohoto stoupajícího centrálního schodiště lemovaly stromy a keře,  které vrhaly na schody stín, čímž v tropickém podnebí toho místa návštěvníkův výstup dělaly mnohem příjemnějším.

Venda zašel dál po asfaltce, která mírně stoupala nad vchod, k plošině, kde stál malý hrad hledící na Indický oceán. Jeho fotky tohoto objektu v tomto díle můžete vidět rovněž. Přesný účel hrádku či jeho historii neznám. Co se mne týká, zdržoval jsem se poblíž hlavního vchodu a fotil si oba výhledy zmíněné v odstavci výše. Těšil jsem se na vstup do Botanické zahrady.

O chvíli později Robert zakoupil lístky a my jsme mohli začít stoupat schodištěm k vlastnímu otevřenému areálu Botanické zahrady na vyšších úrovních nesmírného táhlého svahu vystaveného JZ části Indického oceánu.

Cestou vzhůru přerušovala schodiště širší odpočívadla. Paradoxně, zatímco jsem po schodech zvolna vystupoval, uvědomil jsem si legrační fakt, že tahle Botanická zahrada je jeden velký skleník sám o sobě. Teplota v tom čase musela vystoupit nejmíň na 30 st. C, nemluvě o vysoké relativní vzdušné vlhkosti kolem 70 - 80 %.

Ve středu jednoho odpočívadla ve stoupání byla kruhová kamenná nádrž. Vodní hladinu nádrže pokrýval hustý porost nejméně tří druhů vodních rostlin. Na chvíli jsem se zastavil, abych si je vyfotil. Na hladině kruhové nádrže jsem rozpoznal tři vodní rostliny. Dva proslulé plevely tropických světových toků: babelku řezanovitou (Pistia stratiotes, čeleď aronovitých (Araceae)) a tokozelku tlustostopkatou (Eichhornia crassipes), čeleď modráskovitých (Pontederiaceae)). Oba druhy předváděly svou zajímavou a krásnou morfologii, zvláště tokozelka, protože jsem měl štěstí natrefit na exempláře v květu. Třetí druh byl méně nápadný než posledně zmíněné a pokládám jej za příslušníka čeledi okřehkovitých (Lemnaceae). Jejich miniaturní jasně zelené lístky zabíraly skoro celý zbytek hladiny mezi ostatními druhy.

Pravou i levou stranu schodiště lemovaly záhony různých nízkých keřů nebo trsy rozmanitých bylin a rovněž alej jednoho stromového druhu, jehož exempláře byly dost vysoké, aby poskytly stín návštěvníkovi, jenž po schodišti vystupoval či sestupoval.

Cestou po schodech vzhůru z některých odpočívadel do levé části zahrady odbočovaly pěšiny, ale já se žádnou z nich nevydal, protože jsem na to neměl čas. To víte, moji parťáci už na mne s velkou netrpělivostí čekali na vrcholu schodiště. Po pravdě, návštěvy botanických zahrad nejsou ve sféře jejich nejoblíbenějších zájmů. Kdybych v našem týmu chyběl, botanické zahrady by byly tím posledním, co by toužili vidět. Nicméně musím dodat, že byli k mým zájmům tolerantní a uměli ocenit jak celkové uspořádání zahrady, tak i krásu některých jednotlivých druhů rostlin.

A Short Stop at St. Benoît The Town,
A Common View of The Towns
in The Island

When we drove to the town of which name you can see in the subtitle of this part we left the car in a parking lot of a side street. Our main goal was not the town sightseeing. We wanted to eat and then we tried to find some restaurant in the vicinity of the car. This is why you can´t expect any detailed description of the town. Take this part as a summary of my first impressions resulting from our short stay at the town of the North East coast of the island.

Well, we have already become more familiar with some specific sorts of the coastline in the course of my narration. But in the meantime towns, settlements, villages and other human dwellings have been meant marginally. Just St. Benoît the town gives me a good chance to write something more about this topic. Here I would like to point out that we saw a small part of this town only, nevertheless we passed by feet through some of its lanes, streets and we visited to one square.

That´s understandable we had already seen a lot of various forms of the human urban zones before than we arrived at St. Benoît. Maybe you have already noticed that mostly the towns in Reunion have got their names after various Saints. We were accommodated in St. Leu, the Devil´s Tip was nearby St. Pierre etc.. However mostly we passed by them or we passed through them in the car till that time.

phone´s display. No doubts the tree was neither a spruce nor a fir. This conifer was of

Before than I set up to describe my impressions of one part of one concrete town, let me express my common feelings concerning my first superficial contacts with the urban zones in Reunion.
None of the towns I could have the chance to see in the island in the course of our stay, whether it was from a window of the driving car or during shorter stays at some of them, did not attracted my attention to the measure I could write about them with a great excitement.

Simply expressed: all the towns were the same. I did not register any one of them which would has kept some its own character, I did not see none of them which I could write about as to be beautiful or so. All they consisted of low buildings resembling paper boxes to me. Mostly their most usual dominants were various holy stands. For instance, you could see a Christian church standing not so far away from a mosque. I must admit that we never realized any thorough examination of a town, always we saw only its fragments.
I could observe more pharmacy shops as well as veterinary services almost in every town we drove through. Almost one would say that the local people have not been able to exist without taking some pill. The pharmacy shops belonged to the most noticeable signs with their illuminated green crosses as we were driving through a town in evening times. Often I asked myself about how so many pharmacy shops could coexist in one small town. Well, they all seemed to be useful.
I would have liked to believe that the veterinary services in the island were not determined to the domestic animals only but also to all the wandering dogs I could see perhaps in every town we visited to.

And now let´s come back to the short stay at St Benoît the town. I recall as we were passing through a supermarket. A side passage led alongside the room for buying people there and as we were approaching to its exit I glanced a decorated Christmas tree standing in a pot. It was an extraordinary feeling to me to see this Christmas symbol so far from my native country where we had celebrated the Christmas Eve on 12.24. 2017. Of course, I was interested in what the sort of a tree was used as The Christmas symbol in this remote part of the world. Unlike my country where the most often Christmas trees have been the spruce, the fir and the pine here the tropical Christmas conifer represented the one of Araucaria the genus.

Our searching for some restaurant was not successful. Either they were closed or they did not seemed to fulfill our ideas and then somehow our efforts to find something slowly changed in a free wandering about local lanes and streets till we walked to a larger square with a Christian church. The church was surrounded by a nice park where we took a sit for a while to decide what to do next. Sitting on a low wall separating the park from a street I could observe two or three birds searching for some food in a lawn. I could recognize two species among them easily ´cause while one was mostly yellow in color the another´s coloration was clear red in large. I tried to photograph them but the photos were not perfect. In one moment I noticed a man passing by the Christian church. He wore a long white robe with a white oval cap on his head. He was about fifty or so years old. His feet in free sandals were hardly to see under his long robe falling down to the ground. I wanted to take a portrait of him in an unnoticeable way but there was no good chance to do it. I guess he was a Muslim priest on his way to a mosque. A moment later I could see a young boy worn in the same white robe but without a cap on his head.

There is yet one important fact I got from our accidental probes in various towns in the island. If you look at the photos illustrating this chapter as well as all the previous ones of this serial you can see no floods of garbage. I must make a compliment to the island. Both its urban zones and the non urban ones have been maintained to be clear and neat. My previous experience with Sicily the island in The Mediterranean Sea has been incomparable in this aspect.

Well, we decided to leave the town and to continue in our drive. As we were leaving the park for our car in the parking lot nearby we could hear a calling amplified by a microphone echoing from the not too distant mosque. Jesus on the pink cross behind our backs seemed to be with no objectives.

Když jsme přijeli do města, jehož název vidíte v podtitulu této části, nechali jsme auto na parkovišti jedné postranní ulice. Naším hlavním cílem nebyla prohlídka města. Chtěli jsme se najíst, a tudíž jsme hledali nějakou restauraci v blízkosti auta. Proto nemůžete očekávat žádný podrobný popis města. Berte tuto část jako souhrn mých prvních dojmů, plynoucí z našeho krátkého pobytu ve městě na SV pobřeží ostrova.

Během mého vyprávění jsme se už více seznámili s některými typy pobřeží. Avšak města, osady, vesnice a jiné lidské příbytky byly zatím zmiňovány jen okrajově. Právě městečko St. Benoît mi dává dobrou možnost napsat o tomto tématu něco víc. Zde bych rád podotknul, že jsem z toho městečka viděl jen malou část, nicméně prošli jsme po svých několika jeho uličkami, ulicemi a navštívili jsme jedno náměstí.

Je pochopitelné, že už před tím, než jsme dorazili do St. Benoît, viděli jsme spoustu různých forem lidských městských zón. Možná jste si už povšimli, že města na Reunionu jsou pojmenována po různých svatých. Ubytováni jsme byli v St. Leu, Ďáblův výběžek byl poblíž St. Pierre atd.. Avšak většinou jsme do té doby kol nich nebo skrze ně projížděli autem.

Dříve než se dám do popisování svých dojmů z jedné části jednoho konkrétního města, dovolte, abych vyjádřil své obecné pocity, jež se týkají mých prvních kontaktů s urbánními zónami na Reunionu. Žádné z měst, které jsem měl možnost během našeho pobytu na ostrově vidět, ať to bylo z okénka jedoucího auta nebo během kratších pobytů v některém z nich, neupoutalo mou pozornost do té míry, že bych o nich mohl psát s velkým nadšením.

Prostě vyjádřeno: Všechna ta města byla stejná. Nezaznamenal jsem žádné z nich, které by si bývalo zachovávalo svůj vlastní charakter, neviděl jsem žádné z nich, o němž bych mohl napsat, že bylo krásné či tak podobně. Všechny sestávaly z nízkých budov, které mi připomínaly papírové krabice. Povětšinou byly jejich nejobvyklejšími dominantami různé svatostánky. Například jste mohli vidět křesťanský kostel, který stál nedaleko od mešity. Musím přiznat, že jsme nikdy neuskutečnili žádnou důkladnou prohlídku města. Vždycky jsme viděli pouhé zlomky.
Skoro v každém městě, kterým jsme projížděli, jsem mohl pozorovat více lékáren a také veterinárních služeb. Téměř by člověk řekl, že místní lidé nejsou schopní existovat bez toho, aby brali nějaký prášek. Lékárny patřily k nejnápadnějším známkám se svými osvětlenými zelenými kříži, když jsme nějakým městem projížděli za večerů. Často jsem se sám sebe ptal, jak může tolik lékáren spoluexistovat v jednom městečku. Inu, zdálo se, že jsou všechny užitečné. Býval bych rád věřil, že veteriny na ostrově nejsou určeny pouze pro domácí zvířata, ale též všem těm potulným psům, které jsem mohl vídat snad v každém městě, které jsme navštívili.

A teď se vraťme ke krátkému pobytu v městečku St. Benoît. Vzpomínám, jak jsme procházeli nějakým supermarketem. Podél prostoru pro nakupující tam vedla postranní chodba a jak jsme se blížili k jejímu východu, letmo jsem zahlédl ozdobený vánoční stromek stojící v květináči. Byl to pro mne mimořádný pocit vidět tento vánoční symbol tak daleko od rodné země, kde jsme oslavili Štědrý den 24.12. 2017. Ovšem, že mne zajímalo, jaký druh stromu se používá v této odlehlé části světa. Na rozdíl od mé vlasti, kde nejčastějšími vánočními stromky jsou smrk, jedle a borovice, zde tropický vánoční jehličnan zastupoval blahočet (Araucaria).

Naše pátrání po restauraci nebylo úspěšné. Buď byly zavřené nebo se zdálo, že nenaplňují naše představy, takže naše snaha najít něco jaksi se zvolna změnila ve volné bloumání uličkami a ulicemi, dokud jsme nedošli na rozlehlejší náměstí s křesťanským kostelem. Kostel obklopoval hezký park, kde jsme se na chvíli posadili, abychom se rozhodli, co dělat dál.
Zatímco jsem seděl na nízké zídce oddělující park od ulice, mohl jsem pozorovat pár ptáků, kteří pátrali po potravě v trávníku. Snadno jsem mezi nimi dokázal rozpoznat dva druhy, protože zatímco jeden byl povětšinou zbarvený žlutě, zbarvení druhého bylo převážně jasně červené. Snažil jsem se je vyfotit, ale fotky nejsou dokonalé. V jedné chvíli jsem si povšiml muže, který procházel kol křesťanského kostela. Měl na sobě dlouhou bílou řízu a na hlavě bílou oválnou čapku. Bylo mu asi kol padesátky. Pod bílou řízou spadající k zemi mu bylo sotva vidět nohy ve volných sandálech. Chtěl jsem si ho nepozorovaně vyfotit, ale nebyla k tomu dobrá příležitost. Hádám, že to byl muslimský kněz na cestě do mešity. Po chvíli jsem mohl zahlédnout mladíka oděného ve stejné bílé říze, ale bez čapky na hlavě.

Z našich nahodilých sond v různých městech na ostrově jsem získal ještě jeden významný fakt. Podíváte-li se na všechny fotografie ilustrující tuhle kapitolu a také snímky z předešlých částí seriálu,
nezahlédnete žádné záplavy odpadu. Musím ostrovu udělat poklonu. Jak urbánní tak i non urbánní zóny se udržují čisté a upravené. Má předchozí zkušenost se Sicílií ve Středozemním moři je v tomto ohledu nesrovnatelná.

Město jsme se rozhodli opustit a pokračovat v jízdě. Jak jsme se z parku vydávali k autu na parkovišti opodál, mohli jsme slyšet volání zesílené mikrofonem, jež doléhalo z nepříliš vzdálené mešity. Zdálo se, že Ježíš na růžovém kříži za našimi zády žádné námitky nemá.
