My Free Impressions from Paris

Paris from Above (II)

We could see the Eiffel´s Tower in one line with its younger competitor as well as the Sacré Coeur sitting on the top of the Montmartre hill (The Fig.1).
Naturaly, I took pictures of the two Parisian attractions in more approaches, too (The Fig.2,3).

I think that the Top of Paris has stood on a bit higher platform than the Eiffel´s Tower. Thanks to it this highest occupied building of Paris has been exceeded its older and more famous colleague by a few meters.

The Fig.2
Maybe we were there in the right time with minimal numbers of visitors but despite this I think that the most of the tourists prefer to see Paris from the top of the Eiffel´s Tower rather than from the top of the highest Parisian building.Well, it was to our benefit.

The cemetary which I took its pictures of (see my previous part one) could be seen in the opposite part of the ring to the Eiffel´s Tower. I confess with no torture that I don´t know where there were the separate world´s sides under the roof of the highest Parisian building. This is why at least I make this remark of the positions of the two objects to each other from my observation. Yes, I know, I could take a map of Paris for my help but, as you´ve known from some of my previous posts, mostly I´ve written my texts with no help of the technic books. My texts have streamed from my head only.
Now I realize the rainbow effect on my Fig.1 in the previous post. It was a later afternoon, the Sun was on the side of the cemetary and then the cemetary had to be about in the western direction, the Eiffel´s Tower in the eastern one. Also I could ask Vendy, my attendant, to lend me his compass but I didn´t do it.

I finish this post with photo catching an immediate surroundings in the depth under the Top of Paris (The Fig.4).

The Fig.4

My Free impressions from Paris

Paris from above (I)

Why we didn´t see Paris from the top of the Eiffel´s Tower I´ve already depicted in one of my previous posts. Now I´m going to tell you about how we could compensate this great lack.

This lack was compensated by the highest occupied building in Paris (The Fig.1,2). First we could see it from the foot of the Eiffel´s Tower at a distance.

We went to the building by a taxi cab. During the drive first I could see the Chámps-Elyssés, something like several Venceslaw´s squares (the famous square in the Prague center) in one. We encircled the Victory Arc there and back again and for a while we got out of our taxi near to the highest occupied building in Paris.
I´ve known no details about it but I´ve though it has been occupied rather by various firms and public offices than by private inhabitants.

The Fig.2
I noticed that the Lafayette´s Gallery stood next to it. Down in the vestibule we bought tickets and after a short check of our bags we could go over to the two lifts with a lift-woman at them. Her task was to cord the lifts with a given number of people. Unlike the Eiffel´s Tower there were no fronts in the small hall before the lifts so that a while later we were fastly lifting up to the top of the Parisian skydraper.
Our lift stopped a few floors under the roof. We left it and we found themselves in a wide ring encircling the central axis of the whole building.
The outer wall of this ring consisted of big glassy windows giving splended views over Paris. There were tables and chairs alongside the outer glassy wall, you could sit there and buy something to eat or to drink on the opposite side. We didn´t make use of the choice and we kept passing through the corridor of the big circle and of course, every moment I was taking pictures. It was a fascinating spectacle. Besides, no crowds of people, no fighting for the places at the big glassy views.
The Fig.3
We were lucky for the rainbow again after our visit to The Sacré Coeur (The Fig.3). Though often it was raining and the sky was cloudy from time to time the Sun could send its rays down through clouds. The weather guaranteed the rainbow effect with a high probability.
It was as if you found yourself in a big circle gallery with a plenty of various pictures painted by the only master, by Paris itself.

In one moment my attention was attracted to a large cemetery (The Fig.4). I took several pictures of it, some of them captured this place of the last rest in a more detail. (The Fig.5, 6)

Mé volné dojmy z Paříže

Paříž shora (I)

Objeli jsme Vítězný oblouk tam a zase zpět a po chvíli jsme z taxíku vystoupili nedaleko nejvyšší obytné budovy v Paříži.
The Fig.5

Tuhle volbu jsme nevyužili a dál jsme procházeli tím velkým kruhem a samozřejmě, já každou chvilku fotil. Byla to fascinující podívaná. Navíc, žádné davy, žádné zápolení o místa u velkých skleněných výhledů.
The Fig.6

The Delirium tremens of J.Z..
The English Version

The Addiction to Alcohol (and other drugs) on My Two Pictures:

The Delirium Tremens of J.Z. and

On The Land

I´ve been working at the ward for the follow-up care of the men dependent on alcohol, gambling and drugs. I´ve met with a lot of patients and some of them have returned to our ward repeatedly. This has been the case of J.Z., too. He´s already hospitalized with us for several times. He has certified and he has seemed to be satisfied with his life style. He´s had his curator if he has been free, out of our care. He´s been able to be sober for some time but sooner or later he´s had relapses leading to his next hospitalizations.
The worst state for the drunken men when they decided not to drink is delirium tremens. The afflicted have terrible hallucinations and convulsions. This syndrom is very dangerous and it can kill the patient. Usually you can survive the first attack but with every next delirium the probability of your survival decreases. It is as if you´re passing through the very Hell. It has said that often a patient sees white mice but, surprisingly, the delirious patients see all but the white mice.
The addiction punishes you because you stopped drinking. And the worst of the punishments is just delirium tremens. J.Z. has already passed through the hell. So I imagine his suffering he experienced in the detoxification centre.

There have been appearing and disappearing again many various men with many various characters at our ward for the men dependent on alcohol, drugs and pathologic gambling. Some of them have attracted your attention, some of them have passed by you without you noticed them. Some of them have imprinted in your memory, some of them have been forgotten. From time to time I´ve drawn some of them as it is on my second picture. The sitting man (A.P.) has been addict to alcohol while the standing man (K.C.) has been dependent on both alcohol and the benzodiazepine´s drugs. Both two gays has had relapses. The carp in the front symbolizes their next attempt to be clear. I called the picture On The Land.

On The Land.

Závislost na alkoholu (a jiných drogách) na mých dvou obrázcích:

Delirium tremens J.Z.
a

Postižení mají děsivé halucinace a křeče.

The Drunken Villager.
The English Version

The Demon Named Alcohol in my Drawings

The Drunken Villager

My coloured drawing of The Drunken Villager was inspired by one man from the village of my youth (see some of my previous posts). He was an often visitor of a local pub. He liked drinking beer in the pub. It was his way of a rest as well as his way of an amusement. At the Puffler´s Pub near to a road passing by it you could exchange a lot of information with your neighbours.
His appearance was quite bizzare. His head looked like a tall extended cylinder covered almost permanently with a flat cap with a flap  because he put it off his head very rarely only. If you happened to be so lucky to see what was under his flat cap you could see that the top of his head was bald. The only remains of hair were visible above his ears. There was a small trimmed mustache under his nose, something like the A. Hitler´s one. But the most marked trait of his face was his nose. It protruded from it like a mighty rammer. Just this part of his face was an often target of jokes done by all the other villagers but mostly this joking was done out of his hearing ´cause if he´d have heard something like that his responses might be very dangerous to such a joker. It was told that ones he was in the pub again, somebody was laughing at his nose. He was getting angry with the joker so much that he threw his empty pint at him. Fortunately to the joker he missed.
As for me I never saw him to be angry. His small smart eyes were sparkling with a sense of humour, he liked making a fool of the others himself. He could drink regularly and frequently, from time to time he could fuddle himself and then he left the pub on uncertain feet but next morning you could see him to be agile again. His addiction to alcohol was obvious but he could live with it without he was forced to undergo any antialcohol treatment.
In that time of my youth he might be more than 65 years old, he was a contemporary of my Granddady. Both my Granddady and my Father told me various funny stories about him. They said he was very humorous, they compared him to our famous movie King of the Comics, Vlasta Burian, but unlike him my Drunken Villager was popular within his small village only.
Just he´s leaving the pub in a summer night and the road isn´t wide enaugh to him on my picture.

The Key (Klíč in Czech), My First Joy of Snow in This Year

The Key is a hill covered with a forest in the Lužice Mountains near to Nový Bor the town in Czech Republic. I had the occasion to find myself there just three days before the Christmas Eve (12.21.2014). Our goal was to climb up to its top. Me and my two constant attendants were successful in it.

Our friend Vendy parked his car in a slope at the foot of the Key. You can see it as a little grey point in the line of our prints in watery snow on the picture one. The weather was cloudy, from time to time watery snow was falling. At the beginning we were climbing up a wide forest way, it was stony and interwoven with tangles of tree roots (The Fig.2, 3, 4).
The Fig.2
As usually, I stepped up slowly behind my attendants, from time to time I stopped to take one or two pictures. There was a thin layer of melting watery snow in places at the lower level of our climb up. Mainly I took side shots of the forest or our way in front of me or behind me. Snow was changing its firm state in the liquid one on the ground quickly and then we had to avoid streamings and pools of water.

The forest in which The Key is enfolded has a mixed character, though the spruce is its dominant element. The spruce´s roots don´t penetrate deeply into the soil. Their growth is superficial and shallow, they distributes themselves to the width rather than into the depth. Therefore the strong winds are the cause of its often windthrows.

I must point out that for the time of our climb up to the top and then for the following climb down we came upon no living soul. The temperature was above the freezing point at the lower level of the climb up.
The higher we stepped up the lesser the occurence of the spruce was in the forest composition. There were much more leafy trees at the higher level of the climb up. Together with them a bushy vegetation started appearing. I could see that the growth of the naked leafy trees was very young, the trees were thin and not too tall. The way to the top turned to the left at this interface and it became much nearer. Also I could see that the snowy layer was thicker and it resisted to melt out.

The Fig.3
The snowy path encirled the whole left side of the hill in a mild climbing up but when it arrived at its end it didn´t copy its circuit in an ascendant spiral but it traversed in the opposite direction above its previous section. This traversing repeated for several time up to the very top. Naturaly, the separate sections of the path were as shorter as we were closer to the top ´cause the top had a very limited stony platform.

Just on the traversing sections of the path I started discovering various semi-rifts among the side growth of trees and bushes, they allowed some views over the landscape spreading in the surroundings of the Key. I could see wide valleys and many other hills through the semi-rifts. Unfortunately, the visibility was limited by often snowing and by dense mist.

As you can see on the picture (The Fig.5), this hill falls into the category of the reserves. This warning was in the place where the way changed in the path turning to the left side of the hill. Partly the spruces were replaced leafy kinds of trees. The snowy layer became thicker and snow ceased melting.
The Fig.4

The path was near and stony but stones were covered with snow at the higher level of our climb up. The same held true for branches and trunks of the growth next to the path. They were decorated with snow cover. Suddenly we were in the right kingdom of the Winter (The Fig.6).

Let my photos finish my story:

The Fig.7: A rift through the growth.

The Fig.8: The surrounding lanscape in the dense mist.

The Fig.9: The landscape screened by the growth.

The Fig.10: A spruce decorated with snow.

The Fig.12: Last meters under the top.

The Fig.13: The landscape taken from one side of the top.

The Fig.14: The landscape taken from the opposite side of the top.

The Fig.15: The absolute top of the Key is five hundreds meters high. I spent a short moment on the top only. The wind was cruel, frosty and blistering. While I was taking some pictures my fingers were freezing to the bones. I was alone on the top in that moment. My partners were stepping down in the same time. They accomplished the top a time before me. To wait for me on the top for so a long time was unberable to them. I finished my taking pictures quickly and I followed them down.

The Fig.5

Smrkové kořeny nepronikají do půdy hluboko.

The Fig.6

Sněhová vrstva sílila a sníh přestával tát.

The Fig.1: A beautiful spider waited for me in his web on the top.

Corsica (IV)

The Top of The Hill and
The Rest of the Second Day

The top of the hill turned out to be a beginning of a long and not too wide stony back extending to the inland among other backs separated each other with various valleys. The stony zig-zagging path lined with the thorny vegetation continued on and after a short rest we started going it.

There were a lot of stony outcrops on the long back of the hill. Often we had to avoid the thorny vegetation catching us at our clothings, also we had to stepped up some stony outcrops or to stepped them down. The hill slanted speedy with its slopes to green valleys alongside our craggy path. The green speedy slopes were covered with the dense growth of the macchia. The terrain seemed to be impassable. The thorny bushes threatened to change our bodies in bloody pieces. We had to keep walking or climbing the path.
The Fig.2: A kind of the Cyclamen genera probably.

When you´re climbing up to a hill, a rock or a mountain you have two basic choices what to do. You can view over the landscape under you or you can notice things appearing before your eyes, in your immediate surroundings. While we were finding the continuation of our path alternatively we were doing the two activities. The dog (see the previous part) didn´t ceased to do his company to us. He was still disappearing out of our sights for longer moments and then he was joining us again. Once we noticed as he was drinking water held in a rocky crevice. We envied him a bit ´cause we had no water. Though we felt to be thirsty a bit more than before our climb up we could overcome our thirst with no problem, in short we weren´t so desperate to be forced to mimic the dog and to drink the rotten unclear water from the rocky crevice.
The Fig.3: An abundant fern on the hill but in other places, too.
Continuing on our way with our faces to the inland we could view over the landscape in all the directions. There was Furiani the village sitting on the opposite top to our left hand. The village was separated from us by a long and wide valley covered with the dense growth of the macchia. There were beautiful views of the sea and of the suburb of Bastia the city behind our backs. We could see other mountainous formations rising up in huge waves in front of us and the mountains were exceeding the top we were jumping and stumbling on. At last to our right hand there was a valley, too, rising up in a long hill screening our views of the rest of Bastia in the opposite side. So that we found ourselves on the back of one of many waves of the Corsican rocky sea in storm.
The Fig.4: A lizard on a rocky outcrop.
Our way across the back of our huge stony animal was ended up with a right cliff. We judged that the safety climb down could been ensured by a thick rope. Having no such a thing with us we thought over to encircle the obstacle not so speed side slopes but the macchia said its resolute NO! Then we decided to finish our trip and to return to the hotel in our own traces.

When we were in the wood of cork-oaks again I stopped for a moment to take a picture while my son walked on. Then I kept walking again but I lost my son out of my sight. I turned to the first houses sooner thinking that my son was ahead of me. In fact he kept walking right behind his nose. I was alone and my only attendant was our faithful dog. He refused to leave me. He seemed to be prepared to adopt me and to spend the rest of our stay with us and then to take our back flight for Prague together with us.
And in that time we walked to the first road with a quite bussy traffic. I started to fear of him ´cause he

was running the road as it were a free mountainous terrain. To give him up at last I shouted up to him to leave. Only then he understood that our friendship couldn´t continue on. With his ears down he started running back to his hill. Then my mobil phone started ringing up. Of course, it was my son. A while later we met happily again and our return to our hotel took a couple of minutes.

After a short rest in the hotel with something to eat and to drink we left the hotel, we crossed the Ralley and slowly we took a walk to the sea. It was dasking when we arrived at the sea. With an exception of a few fishmen the coastline was empty. Their landrovers were parked near to the sea line marked with alluviums, maybe mostly they consisted of remains of a plant material. The fismen´s rods were put in forks dug in sand and their owners were standing there or they were sitting in their cars. The sea was calm. While the fishmen were waiting for their fish we were walking on alongside the coastline. We

were heading for distant lights of the Bastia centre. In fact we were walking on long sandy sections of beaches with  the tongues of the sea water to the right. We could see various houses, parks, camps and stores behind beaches to the left. This barrier separated the beaches and the sea from the noise of the traffic rushing the Ralley.

Korsika (IV)

Vrchol kopce a

The Fig.7: One of the opposite green slopes seen from our top.

The Fig.9: On our way to the sea.

The Fig.10: The coastline with a fishman and his car. The dask was falling.

Po krátkém odpočinku v hotelu s něčím k jídlu a pití jsme hotel opustili, přešli jsme Ralley a udělali si zvolna procházku k moři.

The Old Nečil, The Last Private Peasant
in The Bohemian Communist Totality

Nečil was the second name of the man on my picture. He was a peasant in Radostovice the village of my childhood (see my previous blogs with this topic). I have never heard his first name. When I was a boy he was old already. I recall his slim figure with his bent shoulders and with his flappy dirty working clothing as he was walking slowly behind a plough pulled by an ox.
It was said that he was an owner of several large fields including a pond where we went to bathe to during hot summer days. The pond was called Nečilák, i.e. the Nečil´s pond.
I never heard him to speak with anybody. He had one brother. From time to time I had seen his sibling together with him working in a field for a few years of my summer stays in the village but then suddenly he disappeared and then I used to see the old Nečil only. No doubt his brother died. There were gossips in the village that the Old Nečil´s brother was an albino. If his brother-albino had red eyes I never saw ´cause he wore a cap with a long flap on his head and the flap screened his eyes.
They never married, they lived in their farm and they worked in their lands. One day my Grandmother told me that when both the brothers were much more younger they went to dances held in the end of every week. Before than they started to go to dances they took very thorough baths but depite this, as my Grandmother told, they smelled bad with manure so much that no girl wanted to dance with them. This was my Grandmother´s version why they never married.

I have no idea of how they could have their own land in the middle of the Communist establishment. Maybe the Communists relied on their old ages, they thought that both two brothers would die soon and because they had no offsprings it would be easy to socialize their estate. Or it might be that the Communists took both the old brothers as last alive museum pieces of the Capitalist establishment in the village.

It is sure that the Old Nečil had very strong bonds to his soil. I think he believed in it only. One day when I came back to village again, then I was much older boy already, one friend of mine told me: "Imagine, when the Americans landed on the Moon we went to Old Nečil to say the fantastic news to him. He turned his head to us from his plough in a field and replied: ´This can be done in the TV today, I can´t be sure of it´."
He would have to plough in a Moon field to believe in it.

If the world seas have had their Flying Dutchman, the fields near to Radostovice have had their Flying Nečil. To me he will plough there forever.
