A Fresh Message on My Next Attempts
To Find A Tiny Orchid Corallorhiza trifida,
The Coral Root Orchid (III)

The Fig.1: By this taxi cab we returned to the same place where we finished the previous trip. It
was our fourth visit of Český kras the region. 5.6. 2017, taken with my smart phone.

The Fourth Attempt

This attempt was realized on May the 6-th 2017 and we opened it where we finished the third one, i.e. we got out of a taxi cab in the same place where we got in it after the unsuccessful third search for the Coral Root Orchid.

The Fig.2: There is the top of my bag in the lower left corner of this picture. Also you can see the
Forest of the forests, the goal of our fourth attempt. To reach it we had to step the slope up
with the field to our left side. Český kras the region, 5.6. 2017, taken with my smart phone.
Obr.2: V dolním levém rohu tohoto obrázku je vršek mého batohu. Také můžete vidět Les lesů,
cíl našeho čtvrtého pokusu. Abychom ho dosáhli, museli jsme vystoupat svah s polem po levé straně.
Český kras, 6.5. 2017, pořízeno mým chytrým mobilem.

Our taxi driver left his car together with us, too, to enjoy the beautiful day out of his car for a while at least. He was a stranger coming from some country to the East or the South East of Czech republic. In last time, using taxi cabs more often, we have done this experience at the rate of one Czech to five foreigners. While he was talking joyfully in his native language with somebody by his smart phone and he was hidden by a bushy growth in front of our eyes we were standing nearby, we were smoking our first cigarettes after the longer drive and we were preparing for a shorter climb up from the road to the Forest of the forests.

The Fig.3: The Forest of the forests has looked at this wavy landscape. There is Beroun the
town under the hills to the right on the picture. The sky was full of white clouds often overlapping
the Sun. Český kras the region, 5.6. 2017, taken with my smart phone.

Yeah, the Forest of the forests to us because our received coordinates pointed to it strictly. As soon as we finished smoking we set up climbing a slope up with a field to the left side and a bushy growth to the right side leaving the taxi driver behind us and a short while later also his noisy and temperamental phone talking was out of our hearing.

The Fig.4: Pale blue hills under overflying white clouds and a green field to our left hand. Český

Maybe you are putting a question or two to yourself. Why does not he make this story shorter? He could skip the unsuccessful attempts over and rightly he could depict the fourth positive outcome. Does this orchid deserve so much lines? Should we be so much patient because of one little herb known to a few of experts and specialists only? Why then so much hurly-burly for nothing?

Well, I can´t answer to your possible opinions in one phrase. I am afraid that I can´t answer to them even in more phrases quite exactly and in a convincing way. I do not know answers to them myself. But at least I can try to make my way of thinking closer to your understanding. But first you must go back with me to my boyhood. Then as a school boy I began to feel and perceive the first fuzzy suggestions of my lifetime interest in biology. They were the first conscious steps leading me to the world of various biological systems. Soon the school textbooks of the natural history were not enough to me. I wanted to learn more and more and my parents supported my hunger for knowledge. They bought books of the Nature to me. Also there were my first botanic books among them. Somewhere there was my first information of an existence of such an orchid. But since my boyhood I have never seen it in reality. From time to time I have encountered on it by chance in the botanic literature including botanic articles published in Živa, our popular magazine on the Nature founded by J.E. Purkyně in 1853.

The Fig.6: Something of the insect´s life. Two dung-beetles of this trio were eating an amorphous
matter. Often I met this species in Český kras the region. Aside from the two consuming beetles to
the left you can see a next species of the insect. I do not know its name. Český kras the region, 5.6.

Obr.6: Něco z říše hmyzu. Dva chrobáci z tohoto tria požírali jakousi beztvarou hmotu. Tento druh
jsem v Českém krasu často potkával. Stranou od dvou konzumujících brouků vlevo můžete vidět
další hmyzí druh. Jeho jméno neznám. Český kras, 6.5. 2017, pořízeno mým chytrým mobilem.

Imagine yourself that you are stepping up to the Forest of the forests together with me and I am telling you my story. Well then, since my early boyhood I have known it in theory but I have never had the chance to see it alive in its natural environment. Now while we are approaching to the Forest maybe you are beginning to understand to me a bit.

The Fig.7: The same specimen of the sylvan Twiggy as on the Fig.0 but enlarged. This modest
little herb of Orchidaceae the family consists of a simple erected stem with two long and a sheath like
bracts at its base. Its top part is ended up with a few of minute flowers. The upper section of the stem
including the flowers are pale yellow green in color. The photo documents that the plant´s epidermis
contains some traits of chlorophyll. Český kras the region, 5.6. 2017, taken with my smart phone.
vstavačovitých (Orchidaceae) sestává z jednoduchého vzpřímeného stonku se dvěma dlouhými a
pochvovitými listeny při bázi. Vrcholová část je zakončena nemnoha drobnými kvítky. Horní úsek
stonku včetně květů má bledavě žlutozelenou barvu. Snímek dokládá, že pokožka rostliny nějaké stopy
chlorofylu obsahuje. Český kras, 6.5. 2017, pořízeno mým chytrým mobilem.

There are a lot of interesting things throughout the world but only a minute fragment of them we can experience straightly with our own senses. Mostly they remain to be a knowledge mediated by somebody else to us exclusively. You see, we all have already seen the famous portrait of Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci for many many times but who of us have had the chance to stand in front of the original at The Louvre in Paris? Yes, I had the chance already but I did not make use of it. There was such a long front before The Louvre that I gave it up.

They have said that there has been six times lesser gravity on the Moon than on the Earth. I have seen it in the TV for many times when Neil Armstrong as the first man has stood up on the Moon´s surface. But....but I have never tested it myself. On the other hand I dare to claim that Neil has never seen the Coral Root Orchid in his lifetime. I dare to claim further that Neil Armstrong has never registered its existence as itself. We can´t know all the things making our Universe so interesting, miraculous and fascinating through our own straight experiences but at least we can try to know something of the myriads of miracles which have surrounded us in our every step.

The Fig.9: Robert´s first photo of a specimen with one flower. Often the stem
was red and brown in color. The flower is not opened fully yet. While three
external points are expanded, the three internal points remain to be unfolded.

Naturally, as I have met the tiny orchid in the botanic literature for many years I have become to be more familiar with it, I have learnt more and more about it. And the more I have learnt about it the more attractive and the more interesting it has appeared to be to me. I have been able to get its exact description from the botanic keys including all its typical characters, the time of its flowering as well as its favorite places where it has liked to grow. But the best description has never been comparable with a good illustration. Unfortunately, there was a very low level of both B and W and colored photography in the seventies and the eighties of the last century in my country. Or better said authors might do good photos but mostly their reprints in magazines and books were good for nothing. Once an article was published in Živa the magazine. It treated with the saprophytes, I think the title of the article was The Plants without Chlorophyll. The article was very interesting to me because it included among other plants The Coral Root Orchid, too. But its black and white photo was as unclear as a photo of the snow man or of the Nessy. Therefore the best idea of its appearance what I could get came from the scientific B and W or colored drawings. Today this situation has been quite different due to the amazing and extremely fast development of the computer technologies.

If I compare the number of localities of the Coral Root Orchid presented in The Flora of Czech republic by J. Dostál and published in 1950 with the same readings in the most modern revision of our flora published in the nighties then I can see that their numbers have still been decreasing. This tiny plant easy escaping from our attention both in wild and in the botanic literature has still become to be rarer.

Now, excuse me, please, because we are in the Forest already and the slanted terrain continues on. I must concentrate on my search as well as on the way in front of me. My son is climbing up higher above me, from time to time disappearing out of my sight. Though we are not in the place indicated by the received coordinates yet again my eyes are examining the dead leaves and other vegetation under my feet. Often I am stopping and looking around myself in the more thorough way. My son does not cease in keeping a distance between us. He is as the first everywhere. It is his advantage and therefore my ears are ready to hear his victory call: I have it! But he is silent, I can hear cracking dry twigs and rattling dead leaves under steps of his feet only. And, of course, manifold noises of the Forest, the host of my sylvan Twiggy. Yeah, that´s my nickname I gave to it myself. I think it deserves the more poetic name than a pick as it is nicknamed among the orchid photo hunters who have grouped together in the social nets.

The Fig.12: This was one of the most graceful specimens we found in the light
beech forest. It bore six opened flowers plus one bud on the top. The flowers
were waving to us like empty minute fingered gloves. The spike was getting a golden
hue in the sunny rays. Český kras the region, 5.6. 2017, taken by Robert with
Nikon the camera.

Slowly we are approaching to the place indicated by the coordinates. The main navigator is Robert. The coordinates on a display of his smart phone are leading our steps to the place where it could grow. A couple of days before two orchid photo hunters took some pictures of the pick in their slang and displayed them on the FB. My friend Adam got the coordinates from one of the two happier guys for me. A while later the slope is getting flatter though it is not its absolute top and my son says to me that we are in the place. I can see that we are standing on a sylvan platform, it is a light beech forest, its surface is covered with dead beech leaves with sporadic islets of a green vegetation. I devoted to similar places my extra attention in the course of our previous attempts but all my efforts were in vain.

The Fig.13: The beauty once again at the closer view. Český kras, 5.6. 2017, taken by Robert with Nikon the camera.
Obr.13: Kráska ještě jednou v bližším pohledu. Český kras, 6.5. 2017, pořízeno Robertem aparátem Nikon.

We can see that we are here at the first time. We explored a wide forested area in the surroundings of this part during the previous three trips but this light beech forest remained to be intact to us. Sunny light is penetrating through leaves of the beeches of various ages ranging from young seedlings up to robust specimens in their best ages. I am looking at their smooth light grey bark with the horizontal scares like breathing pores. The sunny rays getting through myriads of little windows in the fresh green foliage fall down on the dead beech leaves and change their hues in front of our eyes in every moment. More from time to time the Sun in the sky is overlapped with a white cloud. In such moments the hues of dead beech leaves become to be the darkest versions. We set up in our searching for the sylvan Twiggy in the beech forest separately. Now or never I think to myself and I began to walk forward slowly and very carefully.

The Fig.14: The same plant as on the previous two pictures but photographed under different light conditions. While the same plant is golden yellow in color on the Fig.13 and the Fig.12 here it is pale yellow and green in color. An example of the variable coloration with living beings in dependency on changing light conditions. Český kras the region, 5.6. 2017, taken by Robert with Nikon the camera.
Hardly I register my son not too far from me with my right eye´s corner. His face is bent down, he steps slowly often stopping and gazing at a place straightly in front of him. Then I turns the peripheral vision of my right eye off totally and I concentrate my attention on my immediate surroundings. I am approaching to a foot of a stout beech trunk. The place is covered with a thin layer of dead leaves only. In places I can see a bare soil among them as well as backs of the beech roots looking like the backs of thick snakes disappearing in underground holes. Almost there is no green vegetation around the trunk. A following row of events occurs as fast, simple and usual as a sudden understanding does, as an idea comes to your brain, as a discover happens. Suddenly I am glancing at something very hopeful. A time later my uncertainty changes into absolute certainty. Just I found my first specimen of the Coral Root Orchid. At last! Only then I lift my head up and I am calling for Robert: "Come here! I have it!"

part with flowers is erected. Český kras, 5.6. 2017, taken with my smart phone.

And while my son is coming to me I am on my knees and finding a next sylvan Twiggy nearby the first one. As soon as the real picture of the orchid is imprinted in my son´s visual memory it takes a moment only and also he finds his first specimen. Gradually we find several next specimens. No massive population, rather solitary plants dispersed separately throughout the whole light beech forest. Immediately I must confirm Adam´s words: "To find it is not easy". Really, the sylvan Twiggy fuses with its surroundings almost perfectly. It is due to both its miniature size and to its coloration.
I would say that now we will find more plants together at the locality because they started growing up only at the time of our visit. On the other hand I can´t exclude the possibility that we saw a lesser population. My estimation is ten to up twenty plants in the habitat only. A next visit of the place at this time (on 5.23. 2017) may show which of my thoughts are right. I admit that the pick is an apt nickname to the Coral Root Orchid especially if you look at a plant in buds. But if you have the chance to see it in flower then I stress on my more softer nickname to it. Its tiny flowers are bent down mildly and their points resemble tiny gloves with saggy fingers to me. No erected spike of the observed plants born more than five up to six or seven flowers. The stem with no leaves including flowers are pale yellow and brown in color. The extratepals (i.e. the external points of the flower) are the same in color. The only more joyful color is possible to see on the labium´s surface deeper in the flower´s mouth. It is a few of crimson or purple points. But the flowers are miniature and arranged in mildly saggy positions on the spike. Therefore you can see the crimson blobs only at the closer examination on your knees and with your face in the tighter contact with the flowers.

The Fig.16: The same plant as on the Fig.15. I tried to take as maximal enlarged picture of the
spike as possible. Though the picture has not so sharp contours you can see various details in
a good quality I think. Český kras the region, 5.6. 2017, taken with my smart phone.
Obr.16: Stejná rostlina jako na obr.15. Pokusil jsem se vyfotografovat co možná maximálně

detaily v dobré kvalitě. Český kras, 6.5. 2017, pořízeno mým chytrým mobilem.

While I was photographing various specimens of the sylvan Twiggy with my smart phone Robert tried to catch their appearances up with a help of our new Nikon the camera. In the position of a laying shooter Robert did a very good job I think. Often we had to go down to the ground but first we always checked a surrounding terrain up in a thorough way to be sure that no next specimen was at our sights. To crash specimens of the sylvan Twiggy under our bodies was our goal on no account.
If you want to enjoy the subtle beauty of the sylvan Twiggy fully on photos then you must try to take shots of its enlarged dimensions. But its enlarged portraits distort any idea of its real seize. This was why I photographed it in its natural size, too.

At the very end of our stay at the locality where I saw the sylvan Twiggy alive at the first time in my life also we encountered on two or three specimens of our old known orchid. It was Neottia nidus-avis and this was its early growing phase which I could see it in for the first time. It resembles pieces of a mosaic. We have already seen it during some of our preceded field trips in full flower, partly in buds and some flowering specimens with fruitful dry spikes from a previous season. By this way, piece by piece, gradually you can get a whole idea of all life phases of any plant.

Have you ever heard the Legend on The Old Man and The Sylvan Fairy? No? Well, once upon a time an old man often visited to the large forests of Český kras the region to find his sylvan fairy. He wandered about the forests in a crisscross way but his fairy was nowhere. He searched for her and called for her for all hours long but it was useless. His beloved sylvan fairy did not appear to him. With each return to Prague where he lived he felt himself to be more and more desperate. But he did not give it up and he set up going to the forests again and again. Then on one day he did not come back home, his flat remained to be empty. The forests devoured him. Since that time he has often reappeared to tourists passing through the forested landscape. Some pilgrims have vowed that they have heard his lamenting voice trying to call for the fairy and they have witnessed him doing it with his old smart phone: "Oh, my dearest sylvan fairy! Where are you? Why do not you show herself to me?" Some have claimed that his sad and silence figure has come out of sylvan shadows suddenly and rightly in front of their eyes for a short moment and a while later his contours has fused with the forest darkness again. He has seemed to wander about the deep forests forever and ever.

Fortunately, the story depicted above did not come to reality. I had already thought it out during the failed attempts as my hope to find my sylvan fairy had been decreasing deeply under the point of my absolute failing. We were leaving the sylvan Twiggy´s mysterious kingdom with great feelings.
A while later we were out of the forest and we were stepping an open grassy slope down to the road. Without stopping I was taking my last shots of the surrounding landscape. A next while later we arrived at Lištice the settlement where we waited for a taxi cab. As usually, the taxi driver was a foreigner coming from Ukraine as our talking with him revealed on our back way to Prague.

Proč to vyprávění nezkrátí? Neúspěšné pokusy by mohl přeskočit a rovnou by mohl popsat čtvrtý úspěšný výsledek.

Teď mě prosím omluvte, protože už jsme v Lese a svažitý terén pokračuje.

A zatímco ke mně syn přichází, klečím a nacházím poblíž první lesní Twiggy druhou.

Připomíná to kousky mozaiky. Během našich předešlých polních výletů jsme ho už viděli v plném květu, zčásti v poupatech a nějaké kvetoucí exempláře s plodnými suchými květenstvími z předcházející sezóny. Tímto způsobem, kousek po kousku, můžete získat celkovou představu o všech životních fázích jakékoliv rostliny.

Už jste někdy slyšeli Legendu o starci a lesní žínce? Ne?

A Fresh Message on My Next Attempts
To Find A Tiny Orchid Corallorhiza trifida,
The Coral Rooted Orchid (II)

The Fig.1: A back view of Vráž the village in Český kras the region. This was the place from where

On May the third 2017 me and Robert went to Český kras the region for the third time. Vendy could not go with us because he was at work. We covered the distance between Prague and Vráž the village in Český kras (about 30 km) the region by a taxi cab.

This time we explored a much wider forested area around the original locality including the two hottest places than it was during our two previous trips. Thanks to friends Adam Majer and Jakub Štěpán we had exact coordinates of two different concrete places where the two had found The Coral Rooted Orchid (Corallorhiza trifida) two or three years ago.

We had no certainty that we were in the area of the specimens photographed in Český kras a day before our third attempt. The only thing we could rely on was coordinates of the two older confirmed places and on searching for the orchid in a terrain in their wider surroundings with similar conditions to be convenient for its occurrence.

We wandered about the terrain in a crisscross way for all the long afternoon. Again we explored the two classic localities but our efforts were not successful. We were checking the large area raging from Vráž the village and Záhrabská the settlement to the forested hill named Herinky (about 450 m above the sea level).

That evening at home again browsing through the never ending FB story I encountered on a next provocative and shocking information to me. A next author published his photo hunt of The Coral Rooted Orchid from the same place as the preceded author did a day after our second attempt. Why did our search fail? I asked myself in a desperate way. A time later I wrote e-mail to my friend Adam, the experienced florist. I pointed out of our problems, I meant the more finding of the Coral Rooted Orchid confirmed by the second author from the same place where the first author took his pictures of the orchid. The rare and tiny plant grew somewhere in Český kras but the place remained to be unknown to us still. And, as I wrote to Adam in my e-mail, maybe we were in it but our eyes failed totally. As always Adam turned out to be very helpful. He tried to ask the first author for exact coordinates of the place where he and the second man took pictures of the Coral Rooted Orchid in flower two or three days before. If he was willing to give Adam this information was not sure. Usually any information of exact places where wanted plants grow is submitted to the top secretes. It is way how to diminish a number of bad people in localities with strictly preserved species of plants or other living beings. But unlike me Adam is a florist cooperating with people of the similar interests. In short, he was succeeded in getting the very precious information for me.

And so equipped with the crucial information of the actual occurrence of The Coral Rooted Orchid on May of  the 6-th me and my son set up going to Český kras the region for the fourth time. We hoped. We believed. If we failed or succeeded in our efforts it will be depicted in my next post.

Třetí pokus

3.5. 2017 jsme s Robertem jeli do Českého krasu potřetí. Venda s námi jet nemohl, protože byl v práci. Vzdálenost mezi Prahou a vesnicí Vráž v Českém krasu (asi 30 km) jsme urazili taxíkem.
Tentokrát jsme prozkoumávali mnohem širší oblast kol původní lokality včetně dvou nejžhavějších míst, než během předešlých dvou výletů. Díky přátelům Adamovi Majerovi a Jakubovi Štěpánovi jsme měli přesné souřadnice dvou odlišných konkrétních míst, kde tihle dva našli korálici trojklanou (C. trifida) před pár lety.

no sign of our tiny beauty. Český kras the region, 5.3. 2017, taken with my smart phone.

Pokusil se prvního autora požádat o přesné souřadnice místa, kde on a ten druhý člověk korálici před pár dny vyfotili v květu.
