In The Name of The Vanilla Orchid

The Fig.4: This suburban part seems to be much more representative than the
previous one we visited to. The composition of houses as well as their
arrangement are more colorful in comparison with monotonous streets lined
with the same low boxes like houses. Reunion, a marginal part of St. Denis the

Our sons, Robert (mine) and Venda (Karel´s), had visited to two nurseries of vanilla the orchid during their first stay at the island. When they had returned to Prague I had gotten a very nice present from Robert. The present had been a living small plant of Vanilla crenulata the orchid in a glass tube with a hermetic cover. It had been planted in a special artificial substrate.

All this story has already been depicted in several older posts in this blog. I have cultivated my vanilla plant till these days successfully. Of course, today it has been growing out of the tube. It has been growing freely in the usual orchid substrate in a pot.

And then on January of this year something happened what I could not imagine myself in my most courageous dreams! Suddenly I was in Reunion and I had the chance to visit to the two Vanilla nurseries. This chapter deals with our visit of the first vanilla nursery.

We drove to the first vanilla nursery via St. Denis the capital. After few kilometers of the drive behind the capital we found ourselves in a flat agriculture landscape stretching out higher above the Indian Ocean.

While we were driving through a different marginal part of the capital than it was a time before I was taking next photos of its buildings, parks etc.. Who could know if we stopped here some day for the more thorough sightseeing? So much to the photos devoted to this topic.

After few kilometers behind the capital Venda took a right turn to a side road from the local highway towards the inland. The winding narrow road led us in a mild climb up to our goal. We were passing by various fields and bushy stretches alongside both sides of the road. In a moment Venda had to avoid a tractor approaching to us from the opposite direction. He had to leave the road for a while so that the wide agricultural vehicle could pass through.

In the end Venda found a next side road in a bushy barrier lining the previous road to the left and turned the car to it. Also this more or lesser field path was lined with a bushy growth and we used the place for a short stop so that we could make water. The rest of our drive took fifty meters or so through a direct stretch ending up in an open platform with a parking lot at our sight.

The vanilla nursery looked like a neat farm. Some agricultural buildings stood apart from the central house. I could glanced some agricultural machines and tools around them. Trimmed lawns and bushes decorated the surroundings of the central house. An older tree gave a shadow next to the parking lot. We sat down on a lawn under it for a while. The sky was blue and the Sun was burning. I recall the field path lined with palms. It continued on straightly at the opposite direction of our arrival. You can see it on The Fig.1. Later we used it at the direction showed rightly on the Fig.1.You can see on this picture that a wind was blowing a bit because crowns of the palms were bending to the left side.

I could see a few of tourists or visitors only, the place, this special farm among fields of the vast flat land was peaceful. The visitors payed their greatest attention just to the central house. The building was longer than tall and its face had a roofed veranda where you could take a rest on benches.
The main entrance was opened and then you could enter to examine its only inner hall. It was as long as the building itself. It served as a vanilla museum, as a vanilla propagation and as a mediator of vanilla products for sale in one.

While my three partners were buying various vanilla souvenirs I stayed at the hall for a while only. There were several separated sale tables or stands including one longer table with members of the vanilla services behind them within the hall. The vanilla team was ready to give any information concerning the vanilla to visitors. I noticed manifold panels with next information of this unique orchid because as long as I knew this was the only orchid of all them giving to the man something else than the beauty of flowers. This something else was its specific taste and sent. Who would not know the vanilla ice cream? Or various deserts and sweets with the vanilla taste. No wonder then that the vanilla sellers sold a lot of products with the vanilla taste or sent. Various perfumes, shampoos, body milks etc..

If I remember it well the only vanilla thing they did not sale in this vanilla nursery at the time of our visit was the living vanilla plant in the tube. This sort was sold out. To photograph in the hall was embarrassing to me among more people and besides there was no good light inside. Therefore I left my buying attendants to their buying fever and I stepped outdoor. I was wandering about the surroundings and photographing.

As for the cultivated vanilla I could see its plantation nearby the parking lot only within the farm. The plantation was planted with low trees in rows. They served as supports to the vanilla plants. The low trees (I do not know the species of the used tree) were not only supports to vanilla plants but also they gave a shadow to them. Paradoxically, I did not take good photos of the plants in the plantation. Venda was better in photographing them. This is why here I prefer his photos to mine ones.
When my three partners joined me again our stay at the farm was finishing. A while later we got in the car and we started going to a next destination of that day.

Ve jménu orchideje vanilky

Naši synové, Robert (můj) a Venda (Karlův), navštívili během prvního pobytu na ostrově dvě vanilkové školky. Když se vrátili do Prahy, dostal jsem od Roberta velmi pěkný dárek. Dárek byla živá rostlinka orchideje vanilky Vanilla crenulata ve skleněné zkumavce s hermetickým krytem. Byla zasazena ve speciálním umělém substrátě.

Celý ten příběh už je popsán v několika starších postech tohoto blogu. Pěstuji svou vanilku dodneška úspěšně. Samozřejmě, dnes už roste mimo zkumavku. Roste volně v obvyklém substrátě pro orchidky v květníku.

A pak, letos v lednu, se stalo něco, co jsem si neuměl představit v nejsmělejších snech! Najednou jsem byl na Reunionu a měl možnost navštívit obě vanilkové pěstírny. Tato kapitola pojednává o naší návštěvě první vanilkárny.

Do první vanilkárny jsme jeli přes hlavní město St. Denis. Po pár kilometrech za hlavním městem jsme se ocitli v rovné zemědělské krajině, která se prostírá výše nad Indickým oceánem.

Když jsme projížděli jinou okrajovou částí metropole než předešle, fotil jsem její stavby, parky atp.. Kdo mohl vědět, jestli se tu někdy zastavíme na důkladnější prohlídku? Tolik k fotografiím věnovaným tomuto tématu.

Po pár kilometrech za metropolí Venda stočil vůz vpravo na vedlejší silnici z místní dálnice směrem do vnitrozemí. K cíli nás vedla klikatící se úzká silnice. Míjeli jsme různá pole a křovinaté úseky podél obou stran silnice. V jednom momentě se Venda musel vyhýbat traktoru, který se k nám blížil z opačného směru. Na chvilku musel opustit silnici, aby široké zemědělské vozidlo mohlo projet.

Nakonec Venda našel vedlejší boční silnici v křovinaté bariéře, která lemovala předešlou silnici vlevo, a stočil auto do ní. Také tuhle více méně polní cestu vroubil křovitý porost a my místo využili ke krátké zastávce, abychom si mohli odlevit. Zbytek jízdy obnášel asi padesát metrů rovným úsekem, který končil na otevřeném prostranství s parkovištěm na dohled.

Vanilkárna vypadala jako upravená farma. Nějaké zemědělské budovy stály stranou od centrálního domu. Letmo jsem kol nich zahlédl nějaké zemědělské stroje a nástroje. Okolí centrálního domu zdobily zastřižené trávníky a keře. Vedle parkoviště poskytoval stín starší strom. Chvíli jsme se posadili na trávník pod ním. Obloha byla modrá a slunce pálilo. Vzpomínám na polní cestu lemovanou palmami. Pokračovala přímo v opačném směru našeho příjezdu. Vidíte to na obr.1. Později jsme ji použili ve směru ukázaném právě na obr.1. Na této fotografii můžete vidět, že trochu foukal vítr, protože palmové koruny se ohýbaly doleva.

Viděl jsem jen pár turistů či návštěvníků, tahle speciální farma mezi poli rozsáhlé plošiny byla mírumilovná. Největší pozornost věnovali návštěvníci právě centrálnímu domu. Budova byla delší než vysoká a její průčelí mělo zastřešenou verandu, kde jste si mohli odpočinout na lavičkách. Hlavní vchod byl otevřený, takže jste mohli vstoupit a prohlédnout si jedinou vnitřní halu. Byla stejně dlouhá jako budova sama. Sloužila jako muzeum vanilky, jako propagace vanilky a jako mediátor vanilkových produktů na prodej v jednom.

Zatímco moji tři parťáci nakupovali různé vanilkové suvenýry, já se v hale zdržel jen chvilku. V hale bylo několik oddělených prodejních stolů či stánků včetně jednoho dlouhého stolu se členy vanilkového servisu za nimi. Vanilkový tým byl připraven podávat návštěvníkům jakékoliv informace týkající se vanilky. Všiml jsem si rozmanitých tabulí s dalšími informacemi o této unikátní orchideji, protože, pokud vím, tohle je jediná orchidea ze všech, která člověku poskytuje něco jiného než krásu květů. Tohle něco jiného je specifická příchuť a vůně. Kdo by neznal vanilkovou zmrzlinu? Nebo různé dezerty či sladkosti s vanilkovou příchutí. Není proto divu, že prodejci vanilkárny prodávali spousty produktů s vanilkovou příchutí nebo vůní. Různé parfémy, šampony, tělová mléka atp..

Jestli si to dobře pamatuji, jedinou vanilkovou věc, kterou v téhle vanilkové množárně neprodávali v době naší návštěvy, byla živá vanilka ve zkumavce. Tahle sorta byla vyprodána. Fotit v hale mezi více lidmi mi bylo trapné a navíc uvnitř nebylo dobré světlo. Proto jsem nakupující společníky zanechal jejich nákupní horečce a vyšel jsem ven. Potuloval jsem se po okolí a fotografoval.

Pokud jde o pěstovanou vanilku, mohl jsem v rozsahu farmy vidět pouze její plantáž opodál parkoviště. Plantáž byla osázena nízkými stromy v řadách. Sloužily vanilce jako opora. Nízké stromy (neznám druh použitého stromu) nebyly pro vanilku jen oporou, ale poskytovaly rostlinám také stín. Paradoxně jsem na té plantáži neudělal dobré fotky rostlin. Venda byl v jejich focení lepší. Proto zde upřednostňuji jeho fotky před svými.

Když se ke mně moji tři parťáci zase přidali, náš pobyt na farmě končil. Po chvíli jsme nasedli do auta a rozjeli se k další destinaci toho dne.

An Unexpected Obstacle on A Road
in A Mountainous area

The Fig.2: The wires suggested that there were some settlements in the higher parts of this
area behind the closed gate. But the surroundings in the vicinity of the gate was remote with

One day we started going to a mountainous area. In fact, now I can´t say exactly if this drive had a certain goal. This trip by our rented car was realized shortly after the threat of Berguita the cyclone. From time to time we could see various traces or consequences left by the cyclone though its influence on the island was marginal only because Berguita avoided a direct attack.

As usual the climb up to top parts of the mountainous area was full of turns and the higher we were the more interesting I found the surrounding terrain to be. One side of the road was lined with vertical rocks abundantly covered with various dense vegetation. The other side of the road gave nice views of the mountainous landscape under us. But both the flora and the views were only glances from the going car. It would not be bad to stop somewhere here and to look around I thought to myself and within a short while my thought came to reality.

We passed through a small settlement and a moment later Venda was forced to stop because of a metal gate in our way. In fact, Venda stopped the car for a while behind the settlement already. Some block was installed across the road. But the block was symbolic rather than real. We got out to remove the obstacle from the way. To push it apart a little was enough. Then we continued on in a short drive to the metal gate.

at least two species of ferns. Notice their different leafy morphology. The more numerous
leaves are divided in the more rough way and they are light green in color. The leaves of
 the second species are dark green in color and they are divided in the finer way

Any next drive forward was impossible. Panels attached to the gate warned of a danger in the road´s stretch further behind the gate. We left the car in a fine raining. I put my hat on my head and I stepped over to the metal bars of the gate. The place was remote, nobody at sight. I could listen to bird songs in the silence and to a bubbling sound of a streaming water. Through the bars I could see a straight stretch of the road of about fifty meters long. Nothing dangerous at my sight. But the straight stretch was disappearing behind a left turn out of my sight.

To bypass the metal gate was no problem. First the boys explored the place behind the turn. A while later they came back to the car and then me and Karel headed for the place, too.
Behind the turn we could see immediately why this stretch was closed or why it was dangerous. The rocky wall to the right resembled a big vertical bare bed or a big open long vertical wound. Unlike this big open wound the surrounding rocky walls were covered with dense growths of various herbs, trees and bushes. This was the place where loose boulders had been falling down from the upper parts of the rock. The road under the big break in the rock´s face was not overwhelmed by fallen boulders. It seemed that the boulders and other materials did not stop their falling and rushing over the road they continued on in their way down to the lower and lower parts of the surrounding steep slopes somewhere deeper under the road to the left.

Really, we could see a similar open bare bed under the road to the left, too. Both the traces in the rock were in one line. In theory, the place was passable for a car but who could say if the rocky wall saw the things in the same way.

Besides there were amazing views of the mountainous landscape to the left under the road. I could admire all the dramatic waved terrain in the deep under my feet standing on the road´s left margin. The place gave to you views of the coastline because a long valley was climbing among various hills down to the Indian Ocean. Some mountains stepped to this picture a bit with its green slopes but if you took the right position then you could see the coastline and the sea at a long distance.
The fine raining was ceasing gradually. Misty flocks did not cease saturating the green of the mountainous slopes with humidity. The humidity was omnipresent at this altitude.

When I enjoyed the views of the mountainous landscape under me I turned my attention to the rocky wall on the other side of the road and I began to examine its vegetation cover toward the metal gate. Also I payed my attention to the road´s edges. I noticed what plants grew there. There was a small stream nearby the metal gate. The road led across a short stony bridge there and the stream flowed on under it falling the steep slope down on the opposite side.
The rocky wall was covered with various ferns, liverworts and mosses. Especially wet parts of the rocky wall were occupied with dense growths of these non flowering plants. But I could observe a lot of flowering plant species there, too. I tried to photograph and to take audio-video recordings of all what I could see there with my smart phone. In places I could see narrow small water streams falling the rocky wall down vertically.

We stayed at this interesting and amazing place for the time of about a half of an hour. Then Venda turned the car at the back way to the coastline. The florist aspects of this stop I am treating with in the more detailed way in texts under my pictures. The most plants I photographed there have still not been identified but I hope that gradually I will succeed in this task.

Jednou jsme se rozjeli do horské oblasti. Vlastně teď neumím říci, zda ta jízda měla určitý cíl. Tenhle výlet pronajatým vozem se uskutečnil krátce po hrozbě cyklonu Berguita. Občas jsme mohli pozorovat různé stopy či následky zanechané cyklonem, i když jeho vliv na ostrov byl jen okrajový, protože Berguita se přímému ataku vyhnula.

Jako obyčejně, výstup do vrcholových částí té horské oblasti byl plný zatáček a čím výše jsme byli, tím zajímavějším jsem shledával okolní terén. Jednu stranu silnice lemovaly kolmé skály hojně porostlé rozmanitou hustou vegetací. Druhá strana silnice poskytovala pěkné pohledy na hornatou krajinu pod námi. Ale flora i výhledy byly pouhými zahlédnutími z jedoucího auta. Nebylo by špatné někde tady zastavit a porozhlédnout se, pomyslel jsem si a během krátké chvíle se má myšlenka realizovala.

Projeli jsme malou osadou a po chvíli Venda musel zastavit kvůli kovové bráně v cestě. Venda vlastně auto na chvilku zastavil už za osadou. Přes silnici byl instalován nějaký zátaras. Ale ten blok byl spíš symbolický než reálný. Vystoupili jsme, abychom překážku odstranili z cesty. Stačilo ji odsunout trochu stranou. Poté jsme pokračovali v krátké jízdě ke kovové bráně.

Jakákoliv další jízda vpřed byla nemožná. Tabule přichycené k bráně varovaly před nebezpečím v silničním úseku dále za branou. Auto jsme opustili v jemném mrholení. Nasadil jsem si na hlavu klobouk a přešel jsem ke kovovým mřížím brány. Místo bylo odlehlé, nikdo v dohledu. Mohl jsem naslouchat ptačím zpěvům v tichu a bublavému zvuku tekoucí vody. Přes mříže jsem viděl přímý úsek silnice dlouhý asi padesát metrů. V mém dohledu nic nebezpečného. Ale přímý úsek mi mizel z dohledu za levou zatáčkou.

Obejít kovovou bránu nebyl problém. Nejdřív prozkoumali místo za zatáčkou kluci. Po chvíli se vrátili k autu a já s Karlem jsme zamířili na místo taky.
Za zatáčkou jsme hned viděli, proč je tento úsek uzavřen, či proč je nebezpečný. Skalní stěna vpravo se podobala velkému svislému holému korytu nebo otevřené dlouhé svislé ráně. Na rozdíl od té velké otevřené rány okolní skalní stěny pokrývaly husté porosty bylin, stromů a keřů. Tohle bylo místo, kde uvolněné balvany padaly dolů z horních částí skály. Silnice pod velkou trhlinou ve skalní tváři nebyla spadlými balvany zavalena. Zdálo se, že balvany a další materiály pád nezastavily, a když se přeřítily přes silnici, pokračovaly v cestě dále dolů do nižších částí okolních strmých svahů, kamsi hlouběji pod silnici nalevo.

Skutečně jsme také vlevo pod silnicí viděli otevřené holé koryto. Obě stopy ve skále byly v jedné linii. Teoreticky bylo místo pro auto průjezdné, ale kdo mohl říci, zda skála vidí věci stejně.

Navíc, vlevo pod silnicí byly úžasné výhledy na horskou krajinu. Mohl jsem obdivovat všechen ten dramatický zvlněný terén v hloubi pod nohama, které stály na levém okraji silnice. To místo vám poskytovalo výhledy na pobřeží, protože mezi rozmanitými kopci sestupovalo k Indickému oceánu táhlé údolí. Některé hory do toho obrazu trochu vstupovaly, ale když jste zaujali správnou pozici, pak jste ve velké dálce mohli vidět pobřeží a moře. Jemné mrholení postupně ustávalo. Mlžné chumáče nepřestávaly sytit zeleň horských svahů vlhkostí. V této nadmořské výšce byla vlhkost všudypřítomná.

Když jsem si užil výhledů na horskou krajinu pod sebou, obrátil jsem pozornost ke skalní stěně na druhé straně silnice a začal jsem prohlížet její vegetační kryt směrem ke kovové bráně. Věnoval jsem pozornost také silničním okrajům. Všímal jsem si, jaké rostliny tam rostou. Opodál kovové brány byl malý potok. Silnice tam vedla přes krátký kamenný most a potok protékal dál pod ním a spadal dolů strmým svahem na protější straně.

Skalní stěnu porůstaly různé kapradiny, játrovky a mechy. Zvláště mokré části skalní stěny zabíraly husté porosty těchto nekvetoucích rostlin. Ale mohl jsem tam rovněž pozorovat spousty kvetoucích rostlinných druhů. Snažil jsem se fotit a natáčet audio-video záznamy všeho, co jsem tam mohl vidět, svým chytrým mobilem. Místy jsem mohl pozorovat vodní pramínky spadající kolmo skalní stěnou.
