The Fig.1: Three stony heads.

The English Version

In The Rocky Labyrinth

in Kokořínsko the Region, Czech republic,

Or A Bit of The Table Mountains in Bohemia

I´m going to show you several pictures of a stony maze in this post. I took them during mu trip (10.10.´15) to Kokořínsko the region in my country. I´m no geologist but I suppose that this rocky labyrinth is mostly formed with sandy stone and it is very figurable. Besides, mostly the whole rocky labyrinth has been forested. We were walking a narrow trod path and we could admire various natural rocky statues in the woody terrain. Their creators have been the wind, the water and the time.
It was like to enter a natural gallery where you had to pay no fee, no ticket, where you weren´t forced to open your bags and to turn your pockets upside-down. And in that time of our visit this natural gallery had no too many visitors and then we could enjoy the work of the three sculptors with no fronts before us and crowds behind us as well. The outdoor gallery with its canopy very pleasant to us in that time ´cause the sky was blue and the Sun was shining.
The Fig.2: A narrow rift between two rocky walls.
From time to time the path branched out in more side paths disappearing among the rocky sculptures so that we could choose the way in front of ourselves as we wanted to but all they converged in the original one anyway.
As I was looking at the various art works of the Nature my fantasy was searching for their resemblances with real objects. I thought of the Venezuelan table mountains or tepuis in the language of local natives I had read about so many times. Their tops disappear in dense mists and they look like vast flat plains if you see them at a long distance. But if you could land on them you would see that their surfaces are even like a table seemingly only. In fact their terrain is very craggy and dangerous with a lot of bogs, mysterious caves and deep abysses as well. You would wander about very bizarre landscapes resembling stony mazes.

This rest of a table mountain in my imagination is much more accessible than the tops of the right table mountains in South America. Neither you need to climb up to its flat top nor you need to rent a helicopter to reach it. Simply you enter it and pass through it. This top rests rightly on the ground, it is not lifted up high in the misty sky. This Bohemian table mountain seems to be far older than its counterparts from South America. This mountain has already climbed down due to the erosion and to various mountains-formed processes. Just here we could see what might be a fate of the table mountains such as Auyan tepui, Roraima and many others from the borderline between Venezuela and Brasil in a far-away future. Their lost worlds have been descending slowly to our feet.

The Fig. 3: The Mother Nature´s portrait of an alien.
Well, I could find no sunny pitchers (the Heliamphora the genus), the carnivorous plants of the famous South American table mountains, in my bit of the ancient table mountain, because they´re endemic to them exclusively, i.e. they grow on them only and nowhere else throughout the world. The same holds true for their many other species of plants and animals. But I think that my Bohemian rest of a table mountain has still provided a lot of very interesting niches for many rare species in the Czech Nature. Various crevices and stances as well as vertical walls of its stony statues have been an excellent textbook of various species of the lichens, the mosses, the fungi, the ferns and other members of the plant kingdom. As you can see on my pictures the stony statues are decorated with them very nicely.

I´m not quite sure of this my analogy, if it is precise, but similar thoughts were flying through my mind during my visit of the rocky and woody labyrinth in the Czech region of Kokořínsko.

Ve skalním labyrintu Kokořínska,
Česká republika,
aneb trocha stolových hor v Čechách

The Fig.4: The green hair on this bolder is formed with the fern of Polypodium vulgare.
The Fig.5: A rocky terrain of the Czech Roraima tepui, Kokořínsko, Czech republic.

The Fig.6: Cystopteris fragilis is prosperous in a crevice.

Prostě do něj vstoupíte a procházíte jím.
The Fig.7: A body of a stony ship.

Touto svou analogií si zcela jistý nejsem, je-li přesná, ale během návštěvy skalnatého a zalesněného labyrintu v české oblasti Kokořínska mi hlavou podobné myšlenky prolétaly.

The Green Gems of Our Flora (VI)
with unique photos by A. Majer and J. Štěpán

"Don´t leave the old things for the new ones,
Maybe they have their memories like the elephants......."

From one of the most favorite songs by Z. Svěrák (text) and J. Uhlíř (music).

There are not many people they would know the plants I want to introduce to you in this post. Their photos were sent to me by Adam Majer, my friend, the amateur florist, and today at the first time I can present also photos by another author. His name is Jakub Štěpán, he is a student of the environmental ecology and an amateur botanist, too. I don´t know him personally but his permisson to publish his photos here was mediated by Adam, his friend. Jakub agreed with it and I´d like to thank him very much for it because thus I can illustrate both generi within the Ophioglossaceae family with rare occurrences in Czech republic.
While the Ophioglossum genus is represented with the only species in my country, i.e. O. vulgatum L., the second one, the Botrychium, has more than one species here. Thanks to Jakub I can show you one of them, i.e. Botrychium lunaria L. The two generi fall into a separate family within the Polypodiophyta division. Its name is Ophioglossaceae in Latin.

The Fig.2: Ophioglossum vulgatum. Photo by A. Majer.
Their habits are discreet, often, thanks to this character, they used to be neglected ´cause they´re fusing with vegetation growing together with them.
As all other members of the Polypodiophyta division they don´t flower but form sporangia.
According to botanists both the part with sporangia and the part resembling a right leaf immediately are together one leaf. This holds true for both O. vulgatum and B. lunaria. So that be aware of this fact looking at the two plants on the photos of my friends. You see, some things can appear to be something else than they are in reality.

As for me I have never seen any species of this family in the wild but I have known them from the botanic literature for a long time already. To be true neither I have found them by purpose (with a help of a botanic guide, for instance) nor I have come upon them by chance so far. Of course I could use some of many botanic guides but I prefer to encounter a rare plant species rather than to know in advance where a given species grows. It may be that any finding by chance I do is closer to a true discover to me. On the other hand if I know where to search for a given plant in advance it is like to visit a botanic garden to me only. Yes, surely, I´m impassioned seeing a rare plant in the wild by guide but if I come upon it by myself, by chance, my joy will be much greater.

The Fig.3: B. lunaria in the centre. Photo by J.Štěpán.
When Adam sent his photos of O. vulgatum to me he pointed out to one interesting fact in his e-mail. Our number of chromosomes in the somatic cells is 2n = 46. And now for your comparison: The number of chromosomes of O. vulgatum is 2n = 480!! It is a chromosome king in our flora. You can search for a similar, a higher or the same figure in your botanic guides of the Czech flora but your searching will be in vain. (Also Adam was writing in his e-mail to me that its relative, O. reticulatum from tropic regions, had this number: 2n = 1440.) Unlike our record man its closest relatives here in Czech republic have this number much lower: Botrychium lunaria - 2n = 90, B. simplex - 2n = 90, B. multifidum - 2n = 90, B. matricariifolium - 2n = 180 (the latter is sometimes excluded by botanists as to be the separate Sceptridium genus. This is the original name of all the genus Botrychium. Maybe just the double number of its chromosomes is the reason for it.)
Why does this ancient species contain so many chromosomes in nuclei of its somatic cells ? I´m asking myself. At least it may point out to the fact that to be an owner of so many chromosomes is no great advantage. There is no rule that the more chromosomes means the more complicated structures and functions. Or in other words: A claim that the richer genotype  means the richer phenotype is a nonsense. How then on Earth did O. vulgatum come to its incredible number of chromosomes?
I know no exact answer to this question.

Usually the Polypodiophyta division begins with the Ophioglossaceae family in the taxonomic and systematic guides because anatomy and morphology of its members seem to be the oldest of all the other members of this division. Their sporangia resemble some kinds of inflorescence of the flowering plants. They seem not to be so prosperous in comparison to the ferns of the much more known habits. Their adaptation to their still changing environments is awkward and slow. Their existence in this world has no great hopeful perspectives in the future. I like them the way how a man can like old cars, old furniture and other things of the past. They´re the old models and the only thing what I can do for them is to admire them, to try to preserve them and to propagate their ancient beauties throughout the world here on the G+ Highway.

Zelené klenoty naší květeny (VI)
s unikátními fotografiemi A. Majera a J. Štěpána

"Neopouštěj staré věci pro nové,
Možná mají paměť jako slonové......"

Z jedné z nejoblíbenějších písní od Z. Svěráka (text) a J. Uhlíře (hudba).

Není mnoho lidí, kteří by znali rostliny, jež vám chci představit v tomto postu.
V oddělení kapradin (Polypodiophyta) oba rody spadají do samostatné čeledi jazykovitých (Ophioglossaceae).

The Fig.5: B. lunaria. Photo by J. Štěpán.

The Fig.6.: O. vulgatum, A snake tongue in Czech. Photo by A. Majer.

The Fig.7: B. lunaria, its sporangia above vegetation. Photo by J. Štěpán.

The Fig.1: Sylva´s ready to give a jab into the sporangium´s body.
The English Version

An Experiment

I wanted to catch the "smoking" hole of the sporangium of Geastrum sessile found by my son during our trip to Kokořínsko the region (see my previous post). I wanted to catch this effect by my Canon but I learnt that I couldn´t manage it myself. Therefore I asked Sylva, my daughter, for a cooperation.

The experiment was carried out in this evening (10.13´15), the third day after our trip.
I placed the mushroom on a plate with thin water layer. This was done because I relied on hygroscopic characters of the points around the sporangium. As they was becoming dryer under the home conditions they tended to cling to the sporangium. I hoped that water might bend the points back to the surface. But this idea had no practical quick effect, maybe the mushroom was exposed to water for a too short time and we had no time to wait for it for a longer time.
The Fig.2: One of the best results of our attempts.

While Sylva was stretching out the points around the sporangium with fingers of her left hand her right hand was leaning a blunt end of a pencil against the sporangium´s body. In the same time my task was to target at the black hole on the top of the sporangium with my Canon´s finder. When I was ready I gave a command to her: "Now!"

Just in that moment Sylva jabbed with the pencil into the sporangium´s body. By the jab the black mouth of the sporangium released a partial little cloud of spores falling down almost immediately and this was why I had to press the release as quick as possible. We repeated this procedure for several times. Received photos are no miracles but if nothing better we can read in them in a similar way as astronomers do it with their photos of the Moon face or many other distant objects in the Universe.
The Fig.3: The pencil´s end in contact with the body is veiled with "the smoke".

For example, you can see the puff of spores on the fig.1 very clearly to the left from the pencil especially on the white background of the plate´s edging. Unfortunately, its highest part is almost fusing with the darker background. There´s always been something to be improved if we´ve experimented.

Experiment
The Fig.4: The mouth is hardly visible.

V tom momentě Sylva šťouchla tužkou do těla sporangia.
The Fig.5: Water is colored with the dust of spores.

The Fig.1: This long pond with both output and input was at the start of our trip to Kokořínsko the region, Czech republic.

The English Version

On One Mushroom Looking Like A Star

Our destination where we tried to find some mushrooms (on Saturday, 10.10.´15) was a region called Kokořínsko. This large region has its name derived from Kokořín the castle and means simply a vast landscape in its surroundings. The place where we found themselves exactly was near to Lhotka důl the village and it was about 5 km distant from Mšeno the town and about 7 km distant from the Kokořín castle.
The Fig.2: Geastrum sessile, like a fallen star.

As we went back to our car at the very end of our trip my son walking with Klára (his girlfriend) in front of me found something interesting and amusing as I could judge from their laughing and amused talking. When I came to them Robert (my son) showed me something resting on his palm.
My three attendants had no idea what was it. The thing looked like a star or an open flower of which petals were light brown in color. In the middle of the thing was something similar to a big round ovary. There was a small hole on the top of it and when Robert squeezed the ovary between his fingers carefully something like a smoke was coming out of the hole at a next great amusement of Robert, Klára and Jitka, her Mother. Also I could observe a curious uncertainty mirroring in eyes of my attendants. It might be a bomb left by an anarchist there or other hellish toy. It might be something dangerous. Well, a normal response to something new or unknown to us I think.
The Fig.3: G. sessile in more detail.

I´d like to make yet one notice to the psychology of the moment. I knew the thing. The first thing I told to them was that it was a mushroom. Interestingly, though they took this fact on their minds they could not understand why then it grew upside-down ´cause they thought "the ovary" to be a foot of it. They thought the petals to be its hat. I had to explain that "this ovary" is in fact something like an ovary but instead seed it contained spores, the smoke after squeezing it. Especially Klára seemed to take it with a massive dose of skepticism. She saw the mushroom sitting on its place attached to the substrate with its hat. So I started to describe to her the first phase of the mushroom looking like an dark brown egg. When the sporangium becomes adult, its cover bursts in their raphes forming a sessile star with more points around it.
The Fig.4: G. sessile, a reverse side.

I saw this mushroom alive in the first time in my life but unlike my attendants I knew it thanks to my continuous studies of many biological books. Even I was able to say its first name in Czech to them in that while. Even I remembered that I had drawn this mushroom after its pictures in a book several years ago. And so while my attendants were rather confused with it I was excited with this finding and I took it home with me. I identified this sample as to be Geastrum sessile with a help of one mycology guide.

The Fig.5: G. sessile two days after the trip.
The Fig.6: Drying points are clinging to the sporangium.

On Aisha and Teky

Yesterday (10.10´15) I met with my son, his girlfriend and her Mother to undergo a trip. Our original purpose was to search for mushrooms. To search for mushrooms is a favorite hobby of many people here in Czech republic. Intriguingly, this very popular hobby among the Czech seems to have no analogy in other European countries. I have no idea why it is so.

To your imagine: Go to a forest and search for edible mushrooms. If you find some good species pick them up. They´re determined to be eaten later at home. Of course, you can be poisoned with some toxic species you thought to be edible ones but that´s your own risk. Maybe it is something like an adrenaline sport in my country. Will we survive it or not?
The Fig.2: You can see the ridge typical of this race on Aisha´s back.

Jitka, Mother of my son´s girlfriend, took with herself her own two dogs. It is a couple of Ridgebacks, the female Aisha and the male Teky. To observe their athletic bodies in motion is a great experience. This race has a friendly character but they' re strong dogs and they can be dangerous. At least I can imagine such a situation.
The Fig.3: Aisha and Teky in forward motion.

Jitka allowed them to move freely. From time to time they disappeared in rocky and woody terrain but they returned to us spontaneously except for Teky of who's returns weren't always so willing.
The Fig.4: Aisha and Teky in backward motion.

We went to our destination and back by a car. Our car was occupied with six living beings: four people and two dogs. Aisha and Teky were transported in the back part of the car as you can see on my photo (The Fig. 1). Just they got in. We were coming back home.

O Aishe a Tekym

The Fig.7: Teky sees you.

The Fig.8: Aisha with her Madam in a rocky labyrinth.

Naše auto zabíralo šest živých bytostí: čtyři lidé a dva psi. Zrovna nastoupili. Vraceli jsme se domů.

My Drawing of Dorian Gray

I thought how I could name this post. In the end I thought out the title you can see above. The more educated will know that it is a modified name of the famous book by Oscar Wilde, the excellent English author exceeding boundaries of his native country.
Why did I use this title? Well, the idea came to my mind suddenly, some associations or so. First, this is no picture but a drawing only. The right name of the book is The Picture of Dorian Gray.
The man you can see on my drawing isn't Mr. D. Gray but let's say Dorian to him because I' m not going to reveal his right name. This is next reason why my title seems to be advantageous to me.

Often I observed him sitting on a ruined bench in our garden next to our ward for the men dependent on alcohol, drugs and gambling. He has had great problems with alcohol for several years. This was his third stay with us. He didn't finish the Academy of Arts but he continued on to draw and to paint. From time to time he drew during his stay at our ward, too. From time to time he did it just in the garden. His face was always like the importance itself. He looked like drawing a masterpiece to some world known gallery. Maybe it was a mask against curious patients often standing behind his back and gazing at his work rising up on the paper in front of him. His behave both to other patients and our nursing team was always arrogant a bit. I´m a great painter and who are you? This was what his face always told all us about him.

My last meeting with him was in last month (September of this year). Often I came upon him during my shifts and my longing to draw his portrait was rising up. My imagine was to catch him sitting on the old bench in the garden and drawing his picture with a pencil. A starting black and white study I did during one of my night duty. I finished the Dorian´s portrait later at home. All the drawing was done by heart.

What will be next Dorian´s fate I can´t guess but I would wish him to become to be a good painter really. He may become to be a great painter but in the same way he may become to be an awkward figure, too. His fate is up to him only.

I haven´t already forgotten the exact contents of the book by Oscar Wilde, I´ve known only that somehow Dorian´s picture changed its resemblance, maybe his face on the picture was ageing or so. Unlike this picture my drawing has been a constant memory of the fact that my Dorian drew something in the garden of our ward on September of this year (2015).

"Then my Father took an ax with a long handle......"
The English Version

The Well

"My Father was rather restless in that evening," said the son to his investigators later.

The Well is a name of one part of a well known TV serial here in Czech republic. Its name is Thirty Cases of Zeman The Major. Originally we watched its thirty parts gradually (each part lasting for one hour was going on our TV always on Sundays from 20:00 PM). You saw one part and then you had to wait for the next one for a week. This serial was given here in the seventies of the past century. It was a sophisticated form of the communist brainwash.

Some of parts of the serial are stupid at the first glance but some of them have certain qualities. The part named The Well belongs to the better ones. I must write, too, that some parts can't be forgotten because of their naivety.
The Well was done after a real crime, the case happened really. The tragedy occurred in a village. The case was investigated by Mjr. J. Zeman, the main hero of all the police serial. This case was something like a family horror. The family consists of three members: a father, a mother and their adult son.

This family was in bad relationships with all other villagers and therefore it separated from them more and more. The head of the family suffered from a strong paranoia, the Father trusted nobody, all the villagers were his enemies, he thought that they wanted to damage him and all his family. His family came into continuous conflicts with other villagers. There were frequent attacks and quarrels from either sides. The Father built a tall wall up around his lot. In this isolation his mental illness reached its peak.
"My Father was rather restless in that evening", said his son to his investigators later. He was rocking from one side to another, he was smiling and he was murmuring something to himself. Then he took an ax with a long handle and he went upstairs where his wife was sleeping already. A while later he stepped down again and joined to his son. He took his son to their large garden with a lot of young apple trees forming an orchard. He urged his son to take an ax, too, and then they started felling the young trees down together. The son understood nothing, he didn't agree with his Father, but he was obedient and fulfilled his commands. When this work of the doom was finished the Father took him to the well. He wanted him to cut his wrists with a knife and then to jump in it. Also this Father's order was done and his son found himself in water of their deep well. He didn't wished to die and so he was trying to stay above water. Suddenly he was hit by falling body of his own Father. His Father was still alive and blooding from cutting wounds and trying to get his son under water together with himself. The son was still resisting to killing attempts of his Father. He wanted to live and this fact gave him an incredible power to rescue himself.
By punching his Father into his head he gave him up 'cause his Father disappeared under water surface. He seemed to loss his consciousness and he drowned himself. His semi-mad son was free but his life was still in a great danger. He was swimming in water of their deep well. Somehow he had to climb up to the well's edging high above his head. His way up was a matter of his instincts rather than of his mind. Instinctively he did the same as a climber in a narrow vertical rocky pitch. With help of his body, arms and legs leaning against the well's wall he was able to push himself up slowly and gradually to his rescue. After several falls back he was successful in the end. His hands rested on the well's edging.

He saw their house in fire. A time later the police found a dead female body in the house. The body was the one of his mother. Though her body was damaged by the fire, the police investigation showed that the woman was beaten to her death with the ax used by her husband. Before than he left her dead body upstairs and came back to his son he made a fire there.
While he was trying to finish both his life and his son's one in the well the fire started doing its work only.
The young man felt to be exhausted absolutely but he was driven by fear, he wanted to escape from all the horror. With last rests of his powers he could stumble from their lot with their house in fire to find any help but he lost his consciousness on his way to Černošice the village (about 2 km distant from the crime place). Fortunately, he was found by somebody soon and transported to a hospital. His wounds weren't serious, his body recovered quickly, but his mental conditions suffered from the hard shock. He had to be hospitalized in a mental hospital and it took a long time before than he was able to tell about his fearsome experience to his investigators.

The Epilogue
The Father decided to destroy all his family, their house with the garden including himself. Except for his son almost he was successful. The Father found his solution: He wanted his family to live their lives after lives. Surely, he wanted the best for them only. He wished to live with his family out of all the hated villagers.
Our brains have been very complicated and in the same time they´ve been very week, too. We´ve never known what they´ve been able to produce next time.
Well, after recovering mentally, too, his son became to be an excellent and very talented  physicist. For a time he worked in The Physical Institution in Řež near to Prague. Later he was employed in a top secrete scientific working place somewhere in The Orlické Mountains. I read that both the Russians and the Americans were interested in outcomes of his research. What was the theme of his scientific research exactly has remained a mystery so far.
This case happened in 1968 in Vonoklasy the village. The only man who survived the family destruction has already died. It was in 2002. He has left for his parents. Maybe it has been a happy reunion.

"Jump into the well!", the Father urged his son.

Studna

Chtěl, aby si pořezal zápěstí a pak do ní skočil.
