The Gems of Our Flora (II)

My Associations Over the Buckbean (or Marsch trefoil)
The Buckbean Country

My friend, Adam Majer, sent several pictures of the buckbean (Menyanthes trifoliata L.) to me a couple days before. Adam has still been flooding me with his captures of various rare plants from our Nature. His photo-bombardment has been so intensive that now I´ve already had a lot of excellent photo-materials for many posts to this theme for the future.

Well, my memory of my personal encounter with this plant has been the only one so far and it has come from my youth. The memory is quite misty I must say. Then I was in our cottage in Radostovice the village with my girlfriend. My grandparents (from my Father´s side) were dead in that time already. An older sister of my girlfriend worked as a professional botanist at the Musem of the Natural history in Hradec Králové and she came to visit to us for a couple of days.

Naturally, me and she underwent some botanical field trips in a wide surroundings of the village lying in the region named The Czech-Moravian Highlands. I was twenty five or six years old in that time and I felt to be a great naturalist. I thought I had all plants and animals in my head but my temporary attendant showed me that her knowledge of various plant species was much richer than my one. I couldn´t compare with her in this aspect. It was a great school to me. I was forced to realized myself that my idea of my own perfectness was very naive. I confess you that I sulked openly. Whether we were anywhere she was embarassing me with her examining: "What´s a kind of this plant?" she didn´t cease asking me. Mostly I couldn´t answer to her nosy questions and my vanity suffered in a very cruel way. In the end I ceased talking at all.

Fortunately a day or two later we found something like a common platform. Thanks to it we were able to continue on in a friendly conversation for the rest of her stay with me and my girlfriend (her younger sister). Our mutual respect was renowed when we agreeded that I devoted to the common biology while Jiřina (it was her first name, Georgina in English) was an expert in botany. My pomposity was rescued.

One day we came upon an interesting locality. It was a wet medow with many streamlets between a road and a forest. It was just there where Jiřina discovered the buckbean to me. She noticed its typical trifoliated leaves. Its flowerig time was over, it was a summer time and this species flowered early in the spring. We could see that the buckbean plants (their leaves) were very abundant there. Since that time we had met this species for more times in other similar places. Jiřina was surprised with it and she claimed that this was the buckbean country.

The cottage was sold several years ago. I lost the reason to visit to the place. My girlfriend was blown away by the time. Who knows if there´s still been the meadow full of the buckbean plants there, who knows if the landscape has still been the buckbean country. Who knows...........

Additional notices to the pictures:
The Fig.1: The photo shows the buckbean´s natural habitat: a bog with a tangle of sedges, rushes and other muddy plants (besides I can recognize typical spring stalks of the Equisetum genera, probably of E. palustre L. the species). When Adam took pictures of this species, mainly he was focused on its inflorescences. This is the only shot capturing its trifoliated leaves (in the centre of the picture) he sent to me. While my experience with this species was in the eastern region of the Czech-Moravian Highlands, Adam took pictures of it in one western area of Czech republic.

The Fig.2: Flowers of M. trifoliata L. are very decorative with petals covered with long white hairs. There can be seen more unfocussed trifoliated leaves of this species behind the inflorescence and the stalk to the left from it belongs probably to Equisetum palustre L..

The Fig.3: You can see an older inflorescence of the buckbean with the lowest flowers fading because the lowest flowers start flowering as the first ones. There can be seen spikelets of some sedge species (Carex L. in Latin) around the inflorescence.

The Fig.4: Yes, you´re right, this picture is the same as the Fig.2 but it differences from it in my text here. Well then, maybe I should add something interesting. If you find the buckbean in Czech botanical keys for identifying plants in Czech republic, usually you can find it in a small family named Menyanthaceae (Dum.) Dum. Together with it you would find only one species within this family: Nymphoides peltata (S.G. Gmelin) O. Kuntze growing in water habits fully. And if you find some more information of the buckbean in the special botanical literature you can come upon the fact that this beautiful boggy plant wasn´t always placed into its own separate family but into the Gentianaceae Juss. family, the family of gentians. It was thought by the first botanists to be a member of the Gentianaceae Juss.. But more and deeper studies of this boggy beauty have showed its exclusive position in its own separated family. Nevertheless Menyathaceae the family (consisting of two species in my country) has always found itself immediately next to Gentianaceae the family (gentians) in the botanical systems. Then we can say with an exaggeration that the buckbean has been a gentian-black sheep excommunicated from the range of the right gentians. We could imagine that it was driven from mountainous meadows, the native habitat of the right gentians, to remote sphagnum bogs or moors. But it would be again only our usual tendency to anthropomorphize the other living beings or to interprete them in our own human style. On the contrary the buckbean has seemed to be a pioneer among gentians ´cause it has penetrated into moors where it has been able to survive and to become a separate species with its own family.
And more, it doesn´t matter to this boggy vascular plant what we think about its evolutionary position in our botanical systems.

Klenoty naší flory (II)

Moje asociace nad vachtou

The Fig.4: The buckbean flowers from down to up. Photo by A. Majer

Obr.1: Tento snímek ukazuje přirozené prostředí vachty: močál se spletí ostřic, sítin a dalších bahenních rostlin (navíc rozpoznávám typické jarní lodyhy z rodu přesliička (Equisetum L.), pravděpodobně druhu přeslička bahenní (E. palustre L.).

A navíc, téhle bahenní cévnaté rostlině je jedno, co si o jejím evolučním postavení v našich botanických soustavách myslíme my.

A Wandering about the Port in Bastia, Corsica (XIII)

Views of the open sea from the Bastia´s stony moles
as well as back views of the city from them

There were a lot of near stony moles running out to the sea in the Bastia´s port. The Bastia´s port lies on the northern eastern coast of Corsica. If you were eagle-eyed you would be able to see a part of the European continent in front of your eyes behind the sea. Looking at the right map you can see what a part of the Europe you could see on the opposite side.

It´s not excluded that you could see Elba the island not far from the Italian northern western coast. Yes, it was the island where Napoleon Bonaparte´s temporary prison was before then he could escape from it to lose his battle of Waterloo definitely. Then he was deported to St. Helen´s Island where he lived till his death. Elba could give a plenty of views of his native Corsica to him but St. Helen´s Island was a remote place in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. Napoleon was forced to satisfy himself with his memories of his birthplace only there.
The Fig.2: One of the big touristic vessels, the port of Bastia, Corsica.

We sat down on a bench near to "the water square" (see my previous part dedicated to Corsica) for a while to take a rest and to eat something from our bought foods. I noticed some not too tall trees planted in one line alongside a pavement there. They born glossy leaves and among their clusters could be seen standing erect fruits. I took a couple of shots of them. While I´m writing this text only a while before I identified this species at last. It is Magnolia grandiflora in fruit.
Only then we continued on our wandering about the part of the port nearer to the open sea.

A port is a complicated labyrinth of molos, breakwaters, stony embarkments, buildings and many other manifold places and poetic coves. It is a specific system built up between a land and a sea. The Bastia´s port belongs to the smaller ones. I saw only two big vessels of which purpose was touristic obviously. Mainly smaller fishing and private boats predominated there. They were anchored in the inner parts of the port. The two big touristic vessels anchored off the molo facing to the open sea.

I liked the stony benches running out to the sea at various angles. They had stony or metal sides, some of them were ended up by little lighthouses or lower signaling towers. I captured several shots of two of them. The first of them was red and white and the second was green and white. The stony benches were good places for an observer, they gave a lot of views of the wide sea as well as of the city from the sea.

The Fig.3: The place where we took a rest, the port of Bastia, Corsica.

I admired the huge stones accumulated in places alongside the coast like a vanguard breaking the continuous attacks of the sea waves. The Corsicans had to get this material somewhere in the inland, transported it at the sea and unloaded it in places of its determination. I can´t imagine this process with any modern technical inventions. In places you could see different parts of the breakwaters. Unlike the natural stones these were made of a cast iron material, their forms looked like black hedgehogs. Their ability to shatter the sea waves seemed to be more effective then the same ability of the stones. The natural material has been gradually changed for these artifacts but the stony embarkments and huge stones have still been predominating.

I assume that the little lighthouses in the ends of the stony bridges have marked ways to separate sections of the port in the night. Their role is to navigate boats and ships in the port labyrinth.

Some of the stony benches are interconnected each other and they´re at different levels so that you must step up or down to reach for them.

This was my first visit of a port with salt water of a sea in my life. No wonder then that I had to enjoy it. There were a plenty of beautiful back views of the city from the stony benches, too, so that while we were crossing them I was taking one shot by another at short intervals. As you can see on my pictures the density of various vessels on the sea surface was very low and the same held true for anchoring ships on the open sea. The highest density of smaler ships and boats I could record was at the moles of "the water square". This place was a mix of smaller boats on water and cars on land. You could exchange your car for a boat within a while.

When we visited to the port of Bastia it was after the main touristic season. No crowds interrupted our wandering about it.

The Fig.5: One of wharves in the port of Bastia, Corsica.

Převládaly tam hlavně menší rybářské a privátní čluny.
The Fig.6: A little lighthouse in the port of Bastia, Corsica.

The Fig.7: Both the little lighthouses behind the stony barricade, Bastia, Corsica.

The English Version

On Two Living Forms at the Beginning of May, 2015
in the Light of Adolf Portman´s Hypothesis

Wisteria sinensis (Sims) Sweet and
Polyporus squamosus (Huds.) ex Fr.

It is May, the month of flowers, and most of the flowering plants in Czech republic obey its dictate. Today (05.10.´15) I captured by my Canon two living forms. I´ve noticed and observed their extraordinary appearances for two days already and today I´ve captured them at last.
The Austrian zoologist, Adolf Portman, one of the most original naturalists of the last century, has perceived external appearances of the living beings as their specific character itself, as their common function to appear themselves. As a zoologist he documented this phenomenon by various examples taken from zoology. He has claimed that we´ve tended to explain the external structures of the living beings functionally only and then we haven´t seen the substantial importance behind them., i.e. to appear themselves or to show their own appearances and nothing more than this.

He has assumed that many external structures have been too much complicated to be explained by their functions in an exclusive way. He has claimed that the external structures has had no logic than to present a given living being. According to him to appear oneself has been a natural character of the living beings.
The Fig.2

He has tried to explain all the variability of the external structures of the life both in color and in shape. He´s been trying to insert an aesthetic element into the context of the life as a common character.

The boom of the molecular biology has begun in the times of A. Portman. And while most of the naturalists have paid their attention to the DNA and comp. invisible to our eyes A. Portman has stressed the study of the visible parts of the living forms. He was alone with his access to the living beings in his times.

His hypothesis, as I think, has a lot of week and ambiguous places but despite this I like it for its poetic like interpretation, for its original access to the study of life and for its different and bold attitude to the phenomenon because most of the naturalists turned their eyes to the DNA idol in the author´s times.
To me A. Portman has been a founder of a new branch of the biology. Perhaps its name could be the aesthetic biology or the biology of appearances of the living beings.

A. Portman has pointed out to the fact that the internal organs and structures of the living beings have been much lesser colourful both in color and in shape than their external surfaces. Manifold surfaces of both the animals and the plants have showed their unique identities, their unrepeatable selves. They´ve been an expression of their internal feelings and experiences.
The Fig.3

I think that the highest expression of the internal world of the living organisms we can see in our arts, in our body decorating (piercing, tattoos and other decorations including fancy waves in clothes and  many other symbols of our identity expressions). I think it is a natural continuation of the Portman´s phenomenon with our own species.

The livinig organisms are like bubbles arising from their own matter continuously. They´re appearing, they´re staying here for a while and then they´re disappearing again. In the meantime this process has seemed to be eternal. Continuous repetitions of all the living forms. An elephant....an elephant..... But from time to time some of all the living beings has become extinct forever.
Some living forms appear themselves at regular times but its visible existencies (visible to us) last for a short time only. Such a living form attracts your attention with its unique and temporary appearance more than long-termed living forms you can see every day.

A. Portman´s thoughts needn´t be true literally but surely they´re very inspirational. He is no laureate of the Nobel prize but to my opinion his thinking contribution to the study of the biological systems shouldn´t fall into oblivion.

Something more to my pictures:

1/ Wisteria is a climbing plant and this specimen doesn´t reduce its growth to the wire fence only but it keeps climbing up the street lamp standing immediately next to the fence. The festoons of racemose inflorescences have decorated both the fence and the lamp just in this time.

2/ The lamp looks like a girl in a blue and violet ball-dress with a long trail.

3/ Racemose inforescences of W. sinensis in detail.

4/ Unlike other naked street lamps in Dolní Chabry, Prague, Czech republic, this one wears a very splendid dress. Its tailor is Wisteria sinensis coming from Chine in origin. This species belongs to the Fabaceae Lindl. family.

5/ My regular walks with Clari (my female dog) mean the same circle. One of its section goes through a winbreaker. Just in this section we pass by an old dead trunk of a tree lying next to our way. A couple of days before I noticed a massive fungus on the trunk. I had seen nothing like that on it a time before. This specimen appeared there almost over night. This species belongs to the most often fungi growing on dead remains of trees or rightly on trunks of living trees in the place where I live. I´m no mycologist but I think it is Polyporus squamosus (Huds.) ex Fr..

6/ - 9/ Next pictures of the same polypore of P. squamosus the species, Dolní Chabry, Prague, Czech republic. I think the Portman´s phenomenon holds true for all the living beings including the plant kingdom.

O dvou živých formách na začátku května, 2015
ve světle hypotézy Adolfa Portmana

Wistérie čínská (Wistaria sinensis (Sims.) Sweet)
a

The Fig.5: Polyporus squamosus (Huds.) ex Fr.

A zatímco většina přírodovědců věnovala pozornost DNA a spol. našemu zraku neviditelných, A. Portman zdůrazňoval studium viditelných částí živých forem.

The Fig.6

Myslím, že nejvyšší vyjádření vnitřního světa živých organizmů můžeme vidět v našem výtvarném umění, v našem zdobení těla (piercing, tetováže a jiné ozdoby vč. módních vln v šatech a mnoha jiných symbolů vyjadřování naší identity).

The Fig.7

The Fig.8

The Fig.9

Paulownia tomentosa, flowers, fruits and leaves near to the Eiffel´s tower..
The English Version

My free impressions from Paris

We were There When the Paulownia Trees were In Bloom

We were (me, my son and our friend in common, see my previous posts with this topic) in Paris in the end of Aprel of last year (2014).
Just we emerged from the Parisian subway and we were walking to the Eiffel´s tower when I noticed some trees in full bloom alongside our way to the left. The trees born unusual flowers. They were blue and violet in color. I couldn´t examine them in detail ´cause they were higher above my head and there was no time ´cause my attendants were walking faster in front of me and I didn´t want to loose them.

When I´m writing "unusual flowers" I mean they were unusual to me. I´ve never met this sort of a tree in Prague streets. I´ve never come upon them in any Czech or Moravian city. Maybe I would be more lucky in some of our aristocratic gardens or in some of our botanical gardens. Simply said, I´ve never met this species in my country.
Magnolia x soulangeana in a Prague garden.

It was at the first time I´ve ever seen this sort of a tree on my own eyes just in Paris near to the Eiffel´s tower. But it has already been in my memory in theory for a long time. I´ve known this species from my botanical atlases and textbooks. It took a while than I identified it exactly. First I thought it to be a sort of Catalpa bignonioides Walt. (Bignoniaceae Juss. the family) but I wasn´t satisfied with it. I had to continue on my walking ´cause my attendants were disappearing among people but I didn´t cease thinking of the right identification. If I can say it in this way I´d say that I was browsing in my memory. My searching for the right species in my memory finished with a success. Suddenly Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) Steub. came to my mind and I knew that it was the right answer.

As you may know from some of my previous posts dedicated to my impressions from Paris we were at the Eiffel´s tower twice. The right botanical name of the tree came to my mind only at our second visit to the Eiffel´s tower. Then I noticed fallen flowers on a pavement under the trees as well as under my feet. I could examine them in the more detailed way. I wasn´t forced to climb up to the lowest branches or to jump up and down there to reach some of them. Well, I didn´t want to attract attention of all the other people around me. So much for an accidental botanical investigation in streets of Paris.

Another way how to get a closer view of the tree´s flowers and leaves could manage my camera but I had no time to adjust the appropriate function at our first visit of the Eiffel´s tower. Our second visit of the Eiffel´s tower brought the two pictures by this method at last and you can see them here.

A day or two later I noticed the tree in more Parisian streets. Paulownia tomentosa has often been planted in Parisian streets while its cultivation in Prague private gardens and in streets has been more than rare.

If this tree of which origin is in Asia is prosperous in Paris I don´t see any reason why not to introduce it into our cities and gardens in more numbers, too. Paulownia tomentosa is placed by botanists to  Scrophulariaceae Juss. the family as I can see in one of my many botanical books.
This family doesn´t comprise any trees with the exception for the Paulownia in Czech republic.
Why P. tomentosa hasn´t become more popular in my country? Why Magnolia x soulangeana or Gingko biloba yes and this interesting tree no?

The pictures of the Magnolia tree was taken on Sunday (05.10. 2015) and they all capture the same tree. The tree has grown in a private garden not too far from the place where I´ve been living (the Prague section named Dolní Chabry).

Moje volné dojmy z Paříže

Byli jsme tam, když kvetla pavlovnie

Loni, koncem dubna (2015), jsme (já, syn a náš společný přítel, viz některé mé předchozí příspěvky) byli v Paříži.

M.x soulangeana, one flower lost in foliage, Prague.

M. x soulangeana, last flowers in foliage, Prague.

Proč magnolie Soulangeova (Magnolia x soulangeana) či jinan dvoulaločný (Gingko biloba) ano a pavlovnie plstnatá ne?

České popisky k obrázkům (shora dolů):
Snímky šácholanu (magnolie) Soulangeova (Magnolia x soulangeana) pořízeny 10.5. 2015 a všechny zachycují tentýž exemplář. Strom roste v jedné soukromé zahradě nepříliš vzdálené od místa kde bydlím (pražská čtvrť Dolní Chabry).

A Wandering about the Port in Bastia, Corsica (XII)

A Water Square

I´m coming back to my stay in Corsica a couple years ago. I was there with my son. I´ve never forgotten the splended week we spent in this mountainous French island. It was my first trip abroad in my life. First I saw a sea, first I enjoyed a fly in an airplain. I´ve written about it in my previous posts dedicated to Corsica in detail. This is a free continuation of my memories.

Well, we were in Bastia, in the northern city sitting on the forefinger like part of the island and it was pointing to France. Really, if you look at a map you can see Corsica like a clamped fist with a protruding forefinger. Bastia had its military airport in the World War the Second. Just this Bastia´s military airport was the starting point of A. de Saint Exupérry´s last fly.

But as we were wandering about Bastia we didn´t arrive at the military airport (indeed, I don´t know if it exists yet at all, I´ve read about it only), we found ourselves in the local port. It was divided into a lot of separated stands of which one penetrated to the very city. This stand full of small private ships and boats looked like a water square somewhere in Venice or so. Most of the smaler ships had masts and riggings, some of them were equipped with engines.
If you anchor your small ship in this stand you can get out of it rightly on a pavement and go to shops or restaurants. Till this time I haven´t known the exact way how the smaller ships and fishing boats have been able to get through this water pocket to an open sea and vice versa.

This story has had its free continuation.

The Gems of Our Flora (I)

Orchis purpurea Huds. and O. morio L. in flower again

One friend of mine is a passionate amateur botanist. His name is Adam Majer. He has been focused on the floristics. He has helped with the floristic monitoring of our rare species of the higher plants, i.e. the plants with developed vessel system (Tracheophyta in Latin).

There´s been a very agile e-mail correspondence between us. Almost every Adam´s e-mail has included some photos of various remarkable species in its enclosure. He has undergone many field trips throughout Czech republic from spring to autumn in every year to visit to various localities with occurences of the rare species of our flora. He has collaborated with our professional botanists, too. At least but not last he´s taken pictures of the rare plants in our Nature.

Unlike him my access to the botany isn´t so special, I´d say that my interest in the plant kingdom has always been lesser practical and systematic. My field trips have always been limited to surroundings near to places where I lived or stayed. My access to the botany has been theoretical rather than practical.
This has been why I´ve never seen many plant species in their natural habitats so far. Besides I´ve owned my camera for last several years only so that I couldn´t document the plants by a camera in the time before. But they´ve still been in my memory.
Mainly my theoretical knowledge of the plants has been received by my private studies of many botanical textbooks, atlases and identifying keys of plants.

I´ve liked saying: I´m no botanist, I´m no specialist ´cause I´m an amateur biologist. I´ve always been interested in the common biology. I´ve always been fascinated with this basic question: WHAT IS LIFE? To be able to answer to this question you can´t study the plant world only, you must study the animal world as well as the human one, too. You must acquaint with as many living forms as possible. This allows you to compare and to compose the more exact idea of what is life.

It´s not enaugh to study taxonomic and systematic aspects of the living beings (both the plants and the animals, both the single cellular and the multicellular organisms). If you want to know what I´d wonder to know you must go into much deeper levels of our knowledge of the biological systems. You must devote your attention to many various biological branches ranging from ecology to biochemistry and genetics. You must do it permanently, you needn´t cease to follow any important news in biology. Every new discover can change your great picture of WHAT IS LIFE you´ve tried to build up.

Well, I like the plant world but I´m not specialized in it. It is an inseparable part of the life itself and then I´ve come back to it again and again. Thanks to Adam I can enjoy his photos of various plant species very rare in the Nature of Czech republic. Adam agreed with my proposal to publish his pictures together with my texts in some futurous posts of my blog. I´d like to thank him very much for his kind agreement allowing also you to see something of last rests of the unique plant gems of our Nature.

This post is the first contribution to my collaboration and friendship with Adam Majer.
This time we present two rare species of the Orchidaceae family - O. purpurea Huds. and O. morio L. - in Czech republic. The photos come from Adam´s latest field botanical trips and they confirm that both the two species not only exist in their Czech habitats but they´re flowering this year, too. Naturally, we don´t present any concrete information of localities of the two species.
Unfortunately, Adam sent only one photo of O. purpurea Huds., it is its inflorescence, while its lower flowers are opened the upper ones are in buds yet.
In the case of O. morio L. we can see more specimens with some variability within this species.

Skvosty naší květeny (I)

Své teoretické znalosti o rostlinách získávám hlavně studiem mnoha botanických příruček, atlasů a klíčů k určování rostlin.
O. morio L.. Photo by A. Majer

Nestačí studovat taxonomické a systematické aspekty živáčků (rostlin i živočichů, jednobuněčných a mnohobuněčných organizmů).

O. morio L.. Photo by A. Majer.

- vstavač nachový (O. purpurea Huds.) a vstavač kukačku (O. morio L.) - v České republice. Přirozeně neuvádíme žádné konkrétní informace o lokalitách těchto dvou druhů.
Adam bohužel poslal pouze jedinou fotografii vstavače nachového (O. purpurea Huds.), je to jeho květenství. Zatímco spodní květy jsou otevřené, horní jsou pořád v poupatech.
V případě vstavače kukačky (O. morio L.) vidíme více exemplářů s proměnlivostí v rozsahu druhu.

The Fig.1: Z. Veselovsky and K. Lorenz in the Heaven.
The English Version

On My Gradual Imprinting of Konrad Lorenz

Part Three

On the Biology of Learning

I was an often visitor of the bookshop of Academy (Academia in Czech) the publishing house publishing various kinds of the scientific literature at the corner between the Vodicka´s street and the Wenceslas Square in Prague, Czech republic. My age hardly exceeded twenty and I was an employee of a ward for the older people. It was in the seventies of the past century.

One day I visited to the bookshop again and before I entered it I noticed a new book displayed in one of its shop windows. The book named On The Biology of Learning. In fact it was a set of lectures on this topic. My attention was attracted with the fact that one of them was written by K. Lorenz. There were published other lectures in the book, too. In short, one lecture - one famous scientist, for example C. Pribram, H. Hyden ect. Each of the scientists was from a different branch of the biological science and each of them treated with the same topic - On the biology of learning - from his point of view. C. Pribram saw it from the point of the neurosurgery, H. Hyden from the point of the biochemistry and K. Lorenz from his point of the ethology.

I´ve had the book in my bookcase so far and I´ve read the lecture by K. Lorenz for several times. Not all its paragraphs were easy to understand to me in that time of my youth. But I tried it again and again. It was a summary of the evolution of the behaviour from the single cell to the human. Lorenz has showed that the evolution of the behavioural patterns (with the accent on the ability of learning) has been submitted to the same principles as they´ve been depicted by Ch. Darwin for the evolution of the physiological, morphological and anatomical characters of all the living beings.
I think Oscar Heinroth had to be his great teacher ´cause his name (and thoughts) has been very often quoted by K. Lorenz in his works. Unfortunately, I´v never read any work by him, I´ve known him from the frequent notices of K. Lorenz only.

After the Velvet revolution in Czech republic it turned out that our professor Z. Veselovsky and K. Lorenz were good friends. Z. Veselovsky was a very popular naturalist here, he wrote many scientific popular books and he was the director of the Prague Zoo for many years. You could see and hear him in various TV and radio programs, too. He was a zoologist but he was specialized in the ornithology. The ducks were his favourite bird group. At last but not least he was our great propagator of the ethology, he gave lectures on it at the Charles University as a professor of this scientific branch. Last years of his life were quite sad or cruel. After our revolution in 1989 he was dehonested very badly. He had to leave the function of the director of the Prague Zoo, it was claimed out in our massmedia that he let an elephant destroy and then he allowed some communist comrades to taste the elephant cutlets. When I read about all the dirt thrown at his head I couldn´t believe in it. I couldn´t understand why his colleagues didn´t defend him.
As long as I know he spent the rest of his life apart from the public life. He could keep giving his lectures at the University and he published his works on ethology abroad rather than here. As a sick old man was attacked by some muggers in his flat but he could defend himself with his rifle in his hands. Only when he fell into oblivion I found an article in our biological magazine named Živa in which its author lost a couple of  kind words for him. But, to my taste, it was too late.

If there´s some life after life then no doubt K. Lorenz and Z. Veselovsky are sitting on soft white clouds and they´re debating about ethology, they´re arguing about the strange human behaviour in their never ending efforts to understand to its devious variability. (see my picture one)

On the source of my inspiration for the picture two:
Somewhere I read or heard as K. Lorenz was complaining: "To explain to my children that their dad works if he´s sitting in front of an aquarium and observing fish in it for all long hours is very difficult."

(viz obr. č. 1)

O zdroji inspirace k obrázku č.2 v tomto příspěvku:
Kdesi jsem četl či slyšel, jak si K. Lorenz postěžoval: "Je těžké vysvětlit dětem, že tatínek pracuje, když sedí před akváriem a celé dlouhé hodiny v něm pozoruje ryby."

Paths in the Vietnamese mountains.

Vietnam from The North to The South on Catherine´s Pictures (V)
All the pictures by Catherine Vasickova

The Vietnamese Mountainous Landscape

Catherine took more pictures of the Vietnamese mountainous landscape. I assume that they belong to the best in her photo-collection. Though we needn´t gasp for a breath as we´re looking at various pictures of the Viets of both sexes, as we´re looking at a lot of captures of manifold buildings, at cities and towns, at meals and goods sold by sellers in not too clean Vietnamese streets, in short, though our blood press needn´t rise as we´re looking at the elements of the Vietnamese culture ´cause it is so difficult from the our one, our admiration is excited by the Vietnamese Nature in the most reliable way.
The Vietnamese mountainous inland.

It is the Nature immaculated by the man or if it is changed by him then it is changed a bit only. Today to see the original Nature has been getting rarer and rarer. The more difficult terrain the higher chance to see it and just the mountainous inland in Vietnam gives the chance to see something of the original Nature at least.

I don´t deny my claims in some of my previous posts. I´ve still claimed that the Nature has been one with no respect of the mankind´s activities. I´ve still been thinking that our cities, our cars etc. have been a natural part of our evolution in the Nature. The Nature is a relative term.
We can make a difference between the Nature with no men and the Nature with them. In fact the Nature with no people doesn´t exist because we´ve still lived in it. But many places of the Nature where we´ve lived in have changed their original characters to our own picture. To the certain extent only, to the extent of the Nature´s benevolence. If we haven´t respected the Mother Nature, soon or later she´s showed us her disagreements as we´ve known very well.

We should try to live with our Mother in common in an accordance. We would like to be independent on our Mother Nature, on her freaks, we´d like to anticipate her bad moods in detail. Unfortunately, our efforts to anticipate things exactly haven´t still been perfect. Take the earthquake in Nepal for instance.

We´d still want to live in the more safety way, we´d like to get our immortality at the best, we´d like to live as the most comfortable as possible.

I understand the Nature in the context of the whole Universe, not only in the dimensions of our Earth and our Solar system. Also the Universe can have its freaks. There have still been a lot of thoughts of possible dangers from the Universe.

The more I´ve been getting older the more I´ve realized the miracle of our surviving on this planet. The miracle of my own surviving despite all the potential dangers at every second I can´t exclude in advance. The only thing what we can do is to believe and to hope though we can suppose many dead dangers or risks and then we can avoid them in advance.
You may take an airplane and you can hope in your happy fly only, you can´t be absolute certain that it will finish with a happy end. The incredible or impossible things have happened, too. A copilot will remain alone for a while only........ You can be emloyed in the Twins and one day.......

I don´t want to intimidate you. Let´s come back to Catherine´s photos of  the Vietnamese mountainous landscape.

Steep mountains and deep valleys, the Vietnamese inland.

Přírodu chápu v kontextu celého vesmíru, nejen v dimenzích naší Země a naší sluneční soustavy.
