On One Remarkable Stretch of The Road
on Our Drives from St. Denis to St. Leu
and vice versa

All my photos in the road´s stretch I am going write about were taken from our going car because there was no chance to stop and to photograph it out of the car.

It was remarkable to me from more aspects. It was both beautiful and dangerous and maybe just its dangerous character forced the local government to the decision to build up some alternative solution. Namely, the road´s stretch has been passing tightly alongside a long and tall vertical rocky barrier on one side and alongside the Indian Ocean on the other side.

We passed through this stretch in both the ways many times, whether it was from St. Denis or to this capital of the island, in all the course of our stay. This is why I could take many photos of it. If we drove this stretch towards the capital then we were going tightly alongside the rocky barrier and if we were leaving the capital behind our backs then we passed by the rocky barrier at a longer distance a bit. Indeed, you can see it on my pictures.

The rocky barrier has been exposed to various erosion influences in a long termed way such as wind, temperature, high relative air humidity, falls, burning sunny rays and vegetation covering its walls have been. As I think also the rock wall´ s erosion may be accelerated by the high frequency of the traffic, by its noisy character and by its production of various exhalations. By various accidental combinations of these influences the risk of falling bigger rocky fragments down to the road has had increasing tendencies.

When we arrived at the island we could not drive this road´s stretch from St. Denis to St. Leu because just this stretch was closed for fallen rocky fragments on the road. I have already depicted this situation in the first part of my serial.

Of course, there have been done manifold preventive measurements in the similar way as they have been done throughout all the world where roads have been running alongside rocky walls. We could see them on the wall of the rocky massive of this road´s stretch in Reunion, too. There have been attached wiry nets to the rocky walls in the most dangerous places or there have been installed metal barriers at the rocky foot to catch up falling big rocky fragments.

But as the time has been running all the measurements have turned out not to be enough. As I think just this led to the decision to do with the problem more radically. The local government decided to build up a long bridge at the longer distance from the massive as well as from the original road. By this way the new road on the bridge would be distant from the rock sufficiently. And we were in the right place at the right time because every time we were passing through this stretch of the old road we could observe the way how the gradual construction of the elegant building project has continued on.

Why the bridge? The explanation is quite clear. There was impossible to do it in a different way because the old road has occupied the only narrow flat line between the massive and the Indian Ocean. There has been a short vertical cliff falling down to the sea under the road. If they wanted to built up a new road´s stretch at the longer distance from the massive then they had to put it on the bridge standing in the sea water.

Yet one factor can influence the destruction of the rocks strongly in this area of the Indian Ocean. This factor is a cyclone. Our boys had experienced nothing like that at their first stay at Reunion. Unlike their first stay our experience with this huge windy whirl was positive though, fortunately, the cyclone named Berguita did not hit the island directly missing it on its way toward Madagascar. First it threatened to hit Mauritius. Then its power was comparable with the American major hurricane because it produced a wind of the maximal average tempo of about 185 km per hour. How we experienced Berguita´s threatening attack will be a topic of some of next parts of my narration.

Also the erosion of rocks may be influenced by a strong activity of Piton de la Fournaise, the still active volcano in the island. You have already had the chance to know it in two or three previous parts of the serial.
In short, it was high time to solve this problem. Now approximately the first half of all the bridge´s length has been interconnected. In the mean time the second half has been pre-marked by several solitaire pillars. They have waited for their interconnections with the complete part of the bridge. This has been the way how the construction of the new road bridge has been elongated with each next pillar forward to its goal, i.e. to the end of the massive at the peripheral part of St. Denis the capital.

Byl pro mne pozoruhodný z více aspektů. Byl krásný i nebezpečný a snad právě jeho nebezpečný charakter přiměl místní vládu k rozhodnutí vybudovat nějaké alternativní řešení. Ten silniční úsek totiž prochází těsně podél dlouhé a vysoké kolmé skalní bariéry na jedné straně a podél Indického oceánu na druhé.

Tímto úsekem jsme projížděli v obou směrech mnohokrát, ať to bylo ze St. Denis nebo do hlavního města ostrova, v celém průběhu našeho pobytu. Proto jsem mohl udělat hodně jeho fotek. Pokud jsme jeli tímto úsekem do hlavního města, pak jsme projížděli těsně kolem skalní bariéry, a jestliže jsme město nechávali za zády, pak jsme kolem skalní bariéry projížděli v trochu delším odstupu. Ostatně, můžete to vidět na mých obrázcích.

Skalní bariéra je dlouhodobě vystavena různým erozním vlivům jako jsou např. vítr, teplota, vysoká relativní vzdušná vlhkost, srážky, palčivé sluneční paprsky a vegetace, která porůstá jeho stěny. Jak si myslím, eroze skalní stěny by snad mohla být rovněž urychlována vysokou frekvencí dopravy a její produkcí různých exhalátů. Různými nahodilými kombinacemi těchto vlivů má riziko padajících velkých skalních fragmentů na silnici vzrůstající tendenci.

Když jsme na ostrov přiletěli, nemohli jsme jet tímto silničním úsekem ze St. Denis do St. Leu, protože právě tento úsek byl uzavřen pro spadlé úlomky skály na silnici. Tuto situaci jsem již vylíčil v první části svého seriálu.

Samozřejmě, že se provádějí rozmanitá preventivní opatření podobně, jako se provádějí na celém světě tam, kde silnice probíhají kolem skalních stěn. My jsme je mohli pozorovat také na stěně skalního masivu tohoto silničního úseku na Reunionu. Ke skalním stěnám jsou na nejnebezpečnějších místech přichyceny drátěné sítě nebo se na skalním úpatí instalují kovové zábrany na zachycování padajících velkých skalních úlomků.

Avšak, jak čas běží, ukazuje se, že všechna tato opatření jsou nedostatečná. Jak se domnívám, právě tohle vedlo k rozhodnutí vypořádat se s problémem radikálněji. Místní vláda se rozhodla vybudovat dlouhý most ve větší vzdálenosti od masivu a také od původní silnice. Tímto způsobem bude nová silnice na mostě vzdálena od skály dostatečně. A my jsme byli na správném místě v pravý čas, protože pokaždé, když jsme tímto úsekem staré silnice projížděli, mohli jsme pozorovat, jak postupná konstrukce elegantního stavebního projektu pokračuje.

Proč ten most? Vysvětlení je zcela jasné. Bylo nemožné udělat to jinak, neboť stará silnice zabírá jedinou úzkou rovnou linii mezi masivem a Indickým oceánem. Pod silnicí je krátky svislý sráz, který spadá k moři. Pokud chtěli vystavět nový silniční úsek ve větší vzdálenosti od masivu, pak ho museli položit na most, který stojí v mořské vodě.

V téhle oblasti Indického oceánu může destrukci skal silně ovlivňovat ještě jeden faktor. Tímto faktorem je cyklon. Naši kluci nezažili při svém prvním pobytu na Reunionu nic podobného. Na rozdíl od jejich prvního pobytu byla naše zkušenost s tímto ohromným větrným vírem kladná, i když, naštěstí, cyklon Berguita nezasáhl ostrov přímo a minul ho cestou k Madagaskaru. Nejdřív hrozil zasáhnout Mauricius. Tehdy byla jeho síla srovnatelná s americkým velkým hurikánem, protože produkoval vítr o maximálním průměrném tempu asi 185 km/h.. Jak jsme prožívali hrozící nápor Berguity bude tématem některého z dalších dílů mého vyprávění.

Eroze skal snad může být ovlivňována také nějakou silnou aktivitou stále činné sopky Piton de la Fournaise na ostrově. Už jste měli možnost poznat ji ve dvou či třech předchozích dílech seriálu.
Zkrátka, byl nejvyšší čas ten problém řešit. Teď přibližně polovina celé délky mostu je vzájemně propojena. Druhá polovina je prozatím předznamenána několika solitérními pilíři. Čekají na vzájemné propojení s kompletní částí mostu.
