The Science in Danger in The US?
Is Donald Trump a Frog Sitting on a Stream of the US Science?

I would like to express several thoughts connected with a campaign called the March for The Science.
I must accent rightly in the very opening of this post that I like the science as itself. I am a great admirer of its access to the examination of the world around us including of the one in us.

I am trying to orientate myself in the informational babel of our present Internet highway so much resembling the confusion in the biblical Babylon. While there was a language confusion in Babylon now here we must face an informational confusion. Both in a quantitative way and a qualitative way.

To decide what is right and what is wrong becomes to be a very hard nut to open. To find a rational consensus in the informational babel becomes more and more difficult. To decide anything includes such a flood of various opinions, thoughts, claims, hoaxes and fake news that often they deny each other with no chance to glance a truth for a short while at least. By this informational noise any decision is blocked and slowed down.
Besides all this vast informational flow has still been influenced and distorted by various hackers, robots, spams, viruses and other intruders of the modern computer technology.

In last weeks I have been registering many news of a new campaign opened in the US. Its name is The March for The Science. Similar demonstrations in the name of solidarity have been held in other world big cities. Scientists and fans of the science have demonstrated their fears of the science in the future. What are reasons for this situation? The main cause has seemed to be last elected president of the USA Mr. Donald Trump. Now his first one hundred days in The White House has already been over. We can see and value his first steps in his highest office. Are they good or bad? What are the first impressions of the latest US president?

Well, in the comparison with Trump´s promises and suggestions to voters in the time prior to his victory now his concrete political decisions have seemed to get the milder forms. Many of his original assumptions have bounced on manifold obstacles. To put anything of his original claims in practical life simply has turned out not to be easy. He has looked like a free style wrestler who is going to beat his rival immediately after entering into the ring but while the time of the match is running he is forced coming to a conclusion that it won´t be so a simple matter.

One of the obstacles in his plans has been just the campaign the March for the Science. Is Trump going to cancel any scientific institutions in the US? What are Trump´s real relationships to the science? Is he aware of its importance not only as itself but as an important part of his political decisions? Is he willing to listen to any experts from various scientific branches? It is apparent already that climatology does not belong to his most favorite scientific disciplines. I am not sure of Trump´s deep knowledge of this scientific branch but his first political steps have been coming in conflict with actual outcomes of climatologists. They have still been bringing new and new proofs of the global warming to us. Also next scientific branches have supported this fact but as if all the evidence does not exist to Donald Trump. I do not think that the science has been leaving famous universities of the world metropolis and filling their streets and squares just to protest against real threats of decreased grants as well as of possible eliminations of some scientific sections. I think the science has crowded streets mainly to demonstrate its disagreement with Trump´s political and commercial interests quite omitting the ecological trends which have been asserted and established on the base of serious scientific research in a common life till this time. The science has felt that its previous good cooperation with the US government has been going away fast with Donald Trump´s advent to The White House.

If I could recommend something to D. Trump then to read the book by C. Sagan: The Demon-Haunted World, The Science as a candle in the dark. He should read it very attentively and more than once time. Maybe, it would be his first book to read in his life.

In the meantime his head has seemed to be full of coal and his heart has been pumping oil into his circulatory system.

Věda ve Spojených státech v nebezpečí?
Je Donald Trump žábou sedící na prameni americké vědy?

Rád bych vyjádřil několik myšlenek spojených s kampaní nazvanou Pochod pro vědu. Hned v samém úvodu tohoto postu musím zdůraznit, že mám rád vědu samu o sobě. Jsem velkým obdivovatelem jejího přístupu ke zkoumání světa kolem nás včetně toho v nás.

Snažím se orientovat v info změti naší současné internetové dálnice tolik připomínající zmatení v biblickém Babylóně. Zatímco v Babylóně se odehrávalo zmatení jazyků, teď my tady musíme čelit zmatení informací. Kvantitativně i kvalitativně.

Rozhodnout, co je správné a co je špatné se stává velmi tvrdým oříškem k rozlousknutí. Najít rozumný konsensus v té info spleti je stále nesnadnější. Cokoliv rozhodnout zahrnuje takovou záplavu rozmanitých názorů, myšlenek, tvrzení, pseudopravd a nesmyslů, že se často navzájem popírají, aniž by byla šance zahlédnout pravdu alespoń nakrátko. Tímto informačním šumem se jakékoliv rozhodnutí blokuje a zpomaluje.
Navíc je veškerý tento nesmírný info tok stále ovlivňován a zkreslován různými hackery, roboty, spamy, viry a jinými vetřelci moderní komputerové technologie.

V posledních týdnech zaznamenávám hodně zpráv o nové kampani zahájené v USA. Jmenuje se Pochod pro vědu. Podobné demonstrace ve jménu solidarity se pořádají v jiných světových velkoměstech. Jaké jsou důvody pro tuto situaci? Zdá se, že hlavní příčinou je poslední zvolený president USA, Donald Trump. Teď už mu uplynulo prvních sto dní v Bílém domě. Můžeme zvažovat a hodnotit jeho první kroky v nejvyšším úřadě. Jsou dobré nebo špatné? Jaké jsou první dojmy z nejnovějšího amerického prezidenta?

V porovnání s Trumpovými sliby a podněty pro voliče v době před jeho vítězstvím se nyní zdá, že jeho konkrétní politická rozhodnutí nabývají mírnější formu. Mnohá z jeho původních předsevzetí naráží na rozmanité překážky. Ukazuje se, že uvést cokoliv z jeho tvrzení do praktického života jednoduše, není snadné. Podobá se volnostylaři, který se chystá porazit soupeře ihned po vstupu do ringu, ale zatímco čas zápasu ubíhá, je nucen dospět k závěru, že to tak prostá věc nebude.

Jednou z těch překážek je právě kampaň "Pochod za vědu". Hodlá Trump zrušit některé vědecké ústavy v USA? Jaké jsou skutečné Trumpovy vztahy k vědě? Je si vědom jejího významu nejen jako takové, ale jako důležité součásti jeho politických rozhodnutí? Je ochoten naslouchat odborníkům z různých vědeckých odvětví? Je už zjevné, že klimatologie napatří k jeho nejoblíbenějším vědeckým disciplínám. Nejsem si jist Trumpovými hlubokými znalostmi tohoto vědního odvětví, ale jeho první politické kroky se dostávají do rozporu s aktuálními výsledky klimatologů. Neustále nám přinášejí stále nové důkazy o globálním oteplování. Také další vědní odvětví tento fakt podporují, ale pro Donalda Trumpa jako by všechen ten důkazový materiál neexistoval. Nedomnívám se, že věda opouští proslulé univerzity světových metropolí a plní jejich ulice a náměstí jen aby protestovala proti reálným hrozbám snížených grantů a také možným eliminacím některých vědních disciplín. Myslím, že věda zalidňuje ulice především proto, aby demonstrovala svůj nesouhlas s Trumpovými politickými a obchodními zájmy, jež zcela pomíjejí ekologické trendy, které se až dosud prosazovaly a ustavovaly na základě seriózního vědeckého výzkumu v běžném životě. Věda má pocit, že předešlá dobrá spolupráce s americkou vládou rychle odumírá s nástupem Donalda Trumpa do Bílého domu.


Kdybych měl Donaldu Trumpovi něco doporučit, pak, aby si přečetl knihu od C. Sagana: Svět strašený démonem, Věda jako svíčka v temnotě. Měl by ji číst velmi pozorně a víc než jednou. Možná by to byla první kniha, kterou v životě četl. Prozatím se zdá, že má hlavu plnou uhlí a srdce mu do krevního oběhu pumpuje naftu.
