My First Walk Alongside The Coastline (I)

The Fig.1: I found this plant in flower not so far away from the Primasole beach area on my
way to the sea. It was conspicuous with its big white flowers at the first glance. Its number
was limited to one place only in this stretch of the path. It resembles a plant of
Amaryllidaceae the family (Narcissus for example). Sicily, Catania, a locality behind the

It was an astounding experience to me. A time before I had already visited to three other islands: Corsica, Tenerife and Madeira but I had never had the occasion to walk a natural coastline as it was within The Primasole Beach areal, at the province of Catania, Sicily, on September 2017. The previous islands had given more chances to enjoy their beaches but they had not been natural, they had been full of people, stands, hotels and other usual recreational equipment. I had still longed for an intact beach and my longing came to reality just in Sicily.

In fact, this kind of a beach fulfilling all my demands of it, was about ten minutes distant from our rented house only, at the opposite direction from the natural reserve. A narrow field path led to the sea and immediately I could see various species of herbs in a dense lower growth stretching out in a flat sandy terrain on both sides of the path. The more I was approaching to the sea coast the more the vegetation was losing its continuous character and gradually it was changing in limited tufts of several plant species dispersed in the deeper layer of sand. The path ended up in this point and I was forced to step my way on through sandy dunes with sporadic islets of vegetation and remnants of various materials washed up by the sea. This zone had a mildly lifted margin. The bank was running in a parallel way with the coastline. The coastline was covered with clear and fine grained sand flooded by sea waves periodically.

I walked barefooted in simple Vietnamese sandals with my trousers tucked up under my knees. Anywhere I could put the sandals off and walk barefooted. I could make use of the barefooted walk as I found myself in the surf zone covered with a very fine grained sand. The best walking for my bare feet was in the zone flooded by sea waves where the sandy layer was a thin film only thus giving the best support to my feet. Also this sandy zone was clear of any sharp things making my walk very comfortable.

My goal is not to claim that the artificial beaches with crowds of people are bad or that I do not care of them. They have their own magics as well as interesting things. Nevertheless my interest is more focused on the natural beaches because of the higher probability of manifold animals and plants you can meet there.

I photographed various species of the plant kingdom as well as several samples of the animal kingdom during my walk. Mostly they were unknown to me. Now, in my home background I am going to try to identify my photo-catches gradually. In the field my method was to do as so many pictures as possible. As long as I succeed in my identifying the separate photo-samples taken within the beach I will publish their names here in "additional remarks".

I was exploring this quite unknown surroundings to me and step by step I was getting the more clear idea of it. Evidently the lifted bank covered with washed up material was the high tide zone. I must point out that I never saw it flooded, i.e. in the phase of the high tide. I always was at the sea in the low tide phase. Mainly this zone consisted of broken hollow fragments of a bamboo or a reef like dried biomass. A substantial share of plastics in this zone documented an alarming pollution caused by the man. I did not register any tendencies of local people to get rid of this junk or to make the coastline clear.

Byl to pro mne úžasný zážitek. Před nějakou dobou jsem už navštívil tři jiné ostrovy: Korziku, Tenerife a Madeiru, ale nikdy jsem neměl příležitost projít se po přírodním pobřeží jako v areálu Primasole Beach, v provincii Catanie na Sicílii v září 2017. Předchozí ostrovy poskytovaly více možností užít si jejich pláží, ale ty nebyly přirozené, byly plné lidí, stánků, hotelů a dalšího obvyklého rekreačního vybavení. Pořád jsem toužil po nedotčené pláži a moje touha se uskutečnila na Sicílii.

Tento typ pláže, který splňoval všechny mé požadavky na ni, byl vlastně jen asi deset minut vzdálený od našeho pronajatého domu, v opačném směru od přírodní rezervace. K moři vedla úzká polní cesta a ihned jsem mohl vidět rozmanité druhy bylin v hustém nízkém porostu, jenž se prostíral v plochém písčitém terénu po obou stranách cesty. Čím víc jsem se blížil k mořskému pobřeží, tím víc vegetace pozbývala nepřetržitý charakter a postupně přecházela v omezené trsy několika rostlinných druhů rozptýlených v hlubší vrstvě písku. V tomto bodě cesta končila a já byl nucen prošlapávat si cestu dál písečnými dunami se sporadickými ostrůvky vegetace a zbytky různých materiálů vyplavených mořem. Tato zóna měla mírně zvýšený okraj. Břeh běžel paralelně s pobřežní čárou. Pobřežní linii pokrýval čistý a jemný písek periodicky zaplavovaný mořskými vlnami.

Šel jsem bos v prostých vietnamkách s kalhotami vykasanými pod kolena. Kdekoliv jsem mohl sandály sundat a jít bosý. Procházky naboso jsem mohl využít, když jsem se ocitl v příbojové zóně pokryté velice jemným pískem. Naboso se mi šlo nejlépe v zóně zaplavované mořskými vlnami, kde byla písečná vrstva jen tenký film, čímž nohám poskytovala nejlepší oporu. Písčitá zóna byla také prostá jakýchkoliv ostrých věcí, což chůzi velice zpohodlňovalo.

Mým cílem není tvrdit, že jsou umělé pláže s davy lidí špatné či, že se o ně nezajímám. Mají své vlastní kouzlo jakož i zajímavosti. Přesto je můj zájem zaměřen více na přírodní pláže, kvůli vyšší pravděpodobnosti rozmanitých zvířat a rostlin, které tam můžete potkat.

Během procházky jsem fotil různé druhy z říše rostlinné a také několik vzorků z říše živočišné. Povětšinou jsem je neznal. Nyní, v domácím zázemí se hodlám pokusit své foto-úlovky postupně identifikovat. Mou metodou v terénu bylo pořídit co nejvíc obrázků. Pokud v identifikaci jednotlivých foto-vzorků pořízených na pláži uspěji, zveřejním jejich jména zde v "dodatečných poznámkách".

Prozkoumával jsem tohle pro mne zcela neznámé prostředí a krok za krokem jsem o něm dostával jasnější představu. Zvýšený val pokrytý vyplaveným materiálem byl bezpochyby zónou přílivu. Musím podotknout, že jsem ji nikdy neviděl zaplavenou, tzn. ve fázi přílivu. Vždy jsem byl u moře ve fázi odlivu. Hlavně tato zóna sestávala z polámaných dutých fragmentů suché biomasy podobné bambusu či rákosu. Značný podíl plastů v této zóně dokládá alarmující znečištění způsobené člověkem. Nezaznamenal jsem žádné tendence místních odpadu se zbavit nebo pobřeží vyčistit.
