A Walk in St. Pierre The Town
Alongside The Indian Ocean

Here I am going to depict some moments connected with a short stop in St. Pierre the town.
Well, our original purpose was different. We wanted to go up in the mountainous inland but we were stopped by an unexpected obstacle. A not too long bridge over a river collapsed. The river´s water rose up highly during intensive raining a day before while the threat of the cyclone was culminating. Well, we could use some other road leading to our goal but we decided to stay at the town for that time.

Venda stopped the car in a slant going down to the river as well as to the collapsed bridge. We got out and while Venda and his Father were walking down to the place of the damage I was staying nearby the car and I was viewing of the scene from above. Apart from the bridge in the river I registered two things under me. A car was parking a couple of meters under me in the slant. Two men were standing next to it overlooking the scene at the same way as me, my partners and a few other people. The only difference from all of us was that the two men were enormously fattened. Often I could observe fat persons during our trips throughout all the island. Especially the older Creole women suffered from obesity. Me and Karel made something like a game of the phenomenon. Its origin was quite spontaneous. Whenever we saw a next human "whale" we were pleased with a new hunt and usually I was the one who tried to capture an extraordinary specimen either by my camera or by my smart phone. Of course, I was trying to do it in an unnoticeable way.

The second thing I noticed there was several plants of Riccinus communis growing a couple of steps away from me. This highly toxic species of Euphorbiaceae the family has been very adaptive. From time to time it has been cultivated in gardens of Czech republic but commonly I have encountered upon it whether it was in Corsica or in Tenerife and just this was the moment when I noticed it growing and prospering in Reunion, the tropical island, too. As my faithful readers have already known last time I had the chance to observe this species in Sicily where often it has been becoming wild.

My son Robert was not with us. A time before he left us at a gasoline pump. He wanted to try to cover the distance between St. Pierre and St. Leu (our base in the island) by foot. In the end he gave it up using a local bus. But this was much later.

While Robert was walking on his own way we three changed our original purpose at the collapsed bridge. Venda turned the car and he started driving it from the peripheral part to the down town alongside the coastline. A while later we left the car in a parking lot nearby the sea and we started walking forward on alongside the coastline.

We were walking slowly because the mole gave a shade in a sporadic way only and the Sun stood rightly over our heads in the midday time. A road was running to our left side and we could look at the Indian Ocean to our right side. First the mole was higher above the sea but gradually it became lower and lower. The temperature exceeded thirty degrees Centigrade with no doubts. On that day the typical hot and wet tropical climate attacked us with its full power.

We passed by small low restaurants with views of the Indian Ocean as well as by various decorating lower trees standing in rows in a parallel way with a pavement. There were various buildings on the opposite side of the road to the left but non of them exceeded the usual monotonous average.

In one moment we passed by a yellow minibus tightly parking next to the pavement. I took a picture of its back with the known symbol of the local Dodo bourbon (a light beer) on it.

The Fig.20: To sit in some of local restaurants, to take a drink and to look at
the sea was no problem in this stretch of our walk. Reunion, St. Pierre, taken

I recall a stony stretch of the mole with stony low walls, street lights, a statue of a sitting sea virgin, streets, houses and gardens, steps and stony slants going down to the sea. I photographed the sea virgin several times. Judging from its face she was no beauty. This part was separated from the main road by rows of houses and to my opinion it was the most beautiful section of all our walk.

Then the way led us to the main road again and there was a place next to it with several taller trees planted in beds lined with a low concrete wall. We sat on it to take a rest for a while under the tree crowns. Me and Karel lighted a cigarette and while I stopped smoking I set up photographing some trees in my surroundings. Though they were cultivated species they were exotic and interesting to me. Some of them were in flower or in fruit. Our resting place was animated by the known birds similar to a sparrow. They were in a continuous motion hopping or flying here and there in my immediate vicinity.

Mainly I was concentrated on three tree species growing there. One of them I photographed for more times already. The reason for it was that nice specimens of it were cultivated within the mole. The other two were new to me and I photographed them at the first time. The first of the two was in flower and its strange spikes attracted your attention with their way of arrangement. Separate branches of spikes observed from a longer distance resembled dreads of the young a bit to me. Leaves of this specimen looked like the ones of the cabbage and in fact there was a certain resemblance with the Brussels sprouts as for the spikes, especially with flowers in buds. I haven´t been able to identify this species so far. The third tree species was in fruit but I could find some rests of miniature flowers among its foliage, too. This was given by an easy access to it because it was enough to stand on the concrete low wall and you could look into its foliage rightly in front of you.

When I finished my photographing we continued on in our walking. On this way I saw a bigger grave yard on the opposite side of the main road to the left and because I liked photographing various places of the last rest during my visits abroad I stopped to take a picture or two of this object. I could cross the road over to it but I satisfied myself with photos taken from my side. Here you can see on the picture that I would have been able to enter it, the entrance was open, but instead this we kept walking forward and then no visit of the grave yard was realized.

The walk finished in a park at a children playground nearby a beach at the sea. While me and Karel took a sit on a low wall next to a path Venda continued on in his walking at the direction of a distant port. The plan was that we would wait for him in the park and after his return to us he would cover the rest of the way to the car and he would drive for us. The main road was at our sight from our sitting in the park. There were a lot of trees growing withing the park and then we could sit out of the direct influence of the Sun. We were sitting on the low wall, from time to time we took a cigarette and we observed our surroundings. Still some people were passing by us. Some took a rest on benches. The children playground was clear and modern, again you can see it on my pictures presented here. Often couples of lovers were seen from our place, a child was chasing a ball in the playground. Some persons were in their swimsuits because the beach was distant a couple of steps from the park only. As the time was running we could see that some people appeared on our stage repeatedly. For example, we noticed an older man going in a motor wheel chair. Though equipped with the going vehicle he looked like a shabby homeless. He seemed to be well familiar with the park and with some of its visitors. Plastic bags suspended from side supports of his wheel chair. From time to time he stopped at a basket and he was studying its content. Then he disappeared out of our sight but a while later he reappeared.

I stand sitting passively for a while only. Either I photographed something around me or I was wandering about our immediate surroundings. And of course that the place was like created for our amusing game. In one while Karel attracted my attention to a remarkable female specimen. Then we tried to get some good photo-hunts and we seemed to be succeeded in doing it.

Also I went over to the park´s margin where I could photograph the beach, the Indian Ocean and the distant port from. Similarly as in many other places of the island often I could observe overflying specimens of two bird species. While one was yellow in color the second had red feathers. They were the same size, i.e. the size of the sparrow. I made one attempt to photograph one of them at least but then my camera failed because of its discharged battery.

Soon after as my camera failed Venda returned from his walk to us but he continued on in walking to the car. Venda in the car stopped next to the pavement within ten minutes and we could join to him inside. Then Venda started driving the car to our base in St. Leu the town.

Tady hodlám popsat některé momenty spojené s krátkou zastávkou v městečku St. Pierre. Náš původní záměr byl jiný. Chtěli jsme vyjet do hornatého vnitrozemí, ale zastavila nás nečekaná překážka. Zřítil se nepříliš dlouhý most nad řekou. Den před tím se voda v řece vysoce zvedla během intenzivního deště, zatímco kulminovala hrozba cyklonu. Mohli jsme využít jinou silnici vedoucí k cíli, ale rozhodli jsme se pro ten čas setrvat ve městě.

Venda auto zastavil ve svahu, který spadal k řece a také ke zřícenému mostu. Vystoupili jsme a zatímco Venda s otcem scházeli k místu škody, já se zdržoval poblíž auta a přehlížel jsem scénu shora. Kromě mostu v řece jsem zaznamenal pod sebou dvě věci. Pár metrů pode mnou ve svahu parkovalo auto. Vedle něj postávali dva muži, kteří přehlíželi scénu stejně jako já, moji parťáci či pár jiných lidí. Jediný rozdíl od nás všech byl, že oba muži byli enormě vykrmení. Během výletů po celém ostrově jsem mohl pozorovat tlusté osoby často. Obezitou trpěly zvláště starší Kreolky. Já s Karlem jsme si z toho jevu vytvořili cosi jako hru. Její původ byl zcela spontánní. Kdykoliv jsme uviděli další lidskou "velrybu", nový úlovek nás těšil a obvykle jsem to byl já, který se snažil polapit mimořádný exemplář buď foťákem nebo chytrým mobilem. Samozřejmě, že jsem se to snažil dělat nepozorovaně.

Druhá věc, které jsem si tam všiml, bylo několik rostlin skočce obecného (Riccinus communis), které rostly pár kroků ode mne. Tento vysoce toxický druh z čeledi pryšcovitých (Euphorbiaceae) je velmi přizpůsobivý. Občas se pěstuje v zahradách České republiky, ale obecně jsem na něj narážel, ať to bylo na Korzice nebo na Tenerife a právě tohle byl okamžik, kdy jsem si povšiml, že roste a prosperuje rovněž na tropickém ostrově Reunionu. Jak moji věrní čtenáři už vědí, naposledy jsem měl příležitost pozorovat tento druh na Sicílii, kde často zplaňoval.

Robert, můj syn, s námi nebyl. Před časem nás opustil u benzínové pumpy. Chtěl se pokusit urazit vzdálenost mezi St. Pierre a St. Leu (naše základna na ostrově) po svých. Nakonec to vzdal a použil místní bus. Ale to bylo mnohem později.

Zatímco Robert kráčel vlastní cestou, my tři jsme pozměnili původní záměr u zříceného mostu. Venda obrátil auto a začal ho řídit z periférie do města podél pobřeží. Po chvíli jsme vůz opustili na parkovišti poblíž moře a rozešli jsme se stále dál kupředu podél pobřežní linie. Šli jsme pomalu, protože molo poskytovalo stín jen sporadicky a slunce nám v poledním čase stálo přímo nad hlavami. Po levé straně probíhala silnice a po pravé straně jsme se mohli dívat na Indický oceán. Zprvu bylo molo výše nad mořem, ale postupně se snižovalo. Bez pochyb, teplota přesahovala třicet stupňů Celsia. Toho dne nás atakovalo typické horké a vlhké klima plnou silou.

Procházeli jsme kol malých restaurací s výhledy na Indický oceán a také kol různých ozdobných nízkých stromů, které stály v řadách paralelně s chodníkem. Na protější straně silnice vlevo byly různé stavby, ale žádná z nich nepřesahovala obvyklý fádní průměr.

V jedné chvíli jsme procházeli kol žluté dodávky, která parkovala těsně vedle chodníku. Vyfotil jsem si její záď se známým symbolem místního Dodo bourbonu (lehké pivo) na ní.

Vzpomínám na jeden kamenný úsek mola s kamennými nízkými zdmi, pouličními lampami, sochou sedící mořské panny, ulicemi, domy a zahrádkami, se schodišti a kamennými svahy spadajícími k moři. Tu mořskou pannu jsem fotil několikrát. Soudě podle její tváře, žádnou kráskou nebyla.Tuto část od hlavní silnice oddělovaly řady domů a podle mého názoru to byl nejkrásnější úsek z celé naší procházky.

Poté nás cesta znovu svedla k hlavní silnici a vedle ní bylo jedno místo s několika vyššími stromy zasazenými v záhoně lemovaném nízkou betonovou zídkou. Posadili jsme se na ni, abychom si chvíli odpočali pod stromovými korunami. Já a Karel jsme si zapálili, a když jsem dokouřil, pustil jsem se do focení některých stromů v okolí. I když to byly druhy pěstované, pro mne byly exotické a zajímavé. Některé z nich byly v květu nebo v plodu. Naše odpočívadlo oživovali známí ptáci podobní vrabci. Byli v neustálém pohybu, hopkající a poletující v mé bezprostřední blízkosti.

Hlavně jsem se soustředil na tři stromové druhy, které tam rostly. Jeden z nich jsem už fotil vícekrát. Z toho důvodu, že na molu byly pěstovány jeho pěkné exempláře. Další dva byly pro mne nové a fotil jsem je poprvé. První z těch dvou kvetl a jeho květenství upoutávala vaši pozornost zvláštním způsobem uspořádání. Jednotlivé větve květenství pozorované z větší vzdálenosti mi trochu připomínaly dready mladých. Listy tohoto exempláře vypadaly jako listy kapusty a vlastně, pokud jde o květenství, zvláště s květy v poupatech, byla tam určitá podobnost s růžičkovou kapustou. Tento druh jsem dosud určit nedokázal. Třetí strom byl v plodu, ale dokázal jsem v listoví najít i nějaké zbytky jeho miniaturních květů. To bylo dáno snadným přístupem k němu, protože stačilo stoupnout si na betonovou nízkou zídku a mohli jste hledět do jeho olistění přímo před sebou.

Když jsem s focením skončil, pokračovali jsme v chůzi dál. Cestou jsem na protější straně hlavní silnice vlevo zahlédl větší hřbitov, a protože s oblibou fotím různá místa posledního odpočinku v zahraničí, zastavil jsem se, abych si udělal pár obrázků toho objektu. Mohl jsem k němu přejít silnici, ale spokojil jsem se fotkami pořízenými z mé strany. Tady můžete na fotce vidět, že bych do něj býval mohl vstoupit, vchod byl otevřený, ale namísto toho jsme pokračovali kupředu, a tudíž se žádná návštěva hřbitova neuskutečnila.

Procházka skončila v parku u dětského hřiště poblíž pláže u moře. Zatímco já s Karlem jsme se usadili na nízkou zídku vedle pěšiny, Venda pokračoval v procházce ve směru vzdáleného přístavu. Plán byl, že na něj počkáme v parku a až se k nám vrátí, urazí zbytek cesty k autu a přijede pro nás. Hlavní ulici jsme měli z našeho sezení v dohledu. V parku rostla spousta stromů, takže jsme mohli sedět mimo přímý vliv slunce. Seděli jsme na nízké zídce, občas jsme si zakouřili a pozorovali jsme okolí. Pořád kol nás procházeli nějací lidé. Někteří odpočívali na lavičkách. Dětské hřiště bylo čisté a moderní, opět ho můžete vidět na mých zde prezentovaných obrázcích. Často byly z našeho místa vidět milenecké párky, na hřišti honilo mičudu děcko. Někteří byli v plavkách, protože pláž byla od parku vzdálená jen pár kroků. Jak čas běžel, mohli jsme pozorovat, že někteří se na našem jevišti objevují opakovaně. Například jsme si povšimli staršího muže, jedoucího na motorovém vozíku. Třebaže vybaven pojízdným vozidlem, podobal se ošuntělému bezdomovci. Zdálo se, že je dobře obeznámen s parkem a s některými jeho návštěvníky. Z postranic jeho kolečkového vozíku visely plastové tašky. Občas zastavil u nějakého koše a studoval jeho obsah. Poté nám zmizel z dohledu, ale po chvíli se objevil znovu.

Pasivní sezení jsem snášel jen chvíli. Buď jsem něco kol sebe fotil, nebo jsem se potuloval po bezprostředním okolí. A samozřejmě, že místo bylo jak stvořené pro naši zábavnou hru. V jedné chvíli Karel upoutal mou pozornost na pozoruhodný ženský exemplář. Poté jsme se snažili získat nějaké dobré foto-úlovky a zdá se, že jsme v tom uspěli.

Také jsem přešel k okraji parku, odkud jsem mohl fotit pláž, Indický oceán a vzdálený přístav. Podobně, jako na mnoha jiných místech ostrova, jsem mohl často pozorovat přeletující jedince dvou ptačích druhů. Zatímco jeden byl zbarvený žlutě, druhý měl červené peří. Byli stejné velikosti, tj. velikosti vrabce. Učinil jsem jeden pokus alespoň jednoho z nich vyfotit, ale pak mi foťák selhal kvůli vybité baterii.

často pozorovat po celém ostrově. Baterka foťáku se vybila. Ale stejně to byl
konec našeho zastavení v městečku. O chvíli později jsme nasedli do auta, jež
brzy nechalo městečko za našimi zády. Reunion, St. Pierre, pořízeno aparátem

Brzy poté, když mi foťák selhal, se k nám z procházky vrátil Venda, ale kráčel dál k autu. Během deseti minut Venda v autě zastavil u chodníku a mi se k němu uvnitř mohli přidat. Poté Venda rozjel vůz k naší základně v městečku St. Leu.
