On The Forest of Faces

I have been getting through the Forest of faces.

"We all have still been getting through the forest of faces" occurred to me suddenly with no extra stimulus. I began to like this thought. I started to follow it. I started to imagine the way how I could draw it.

We have come upon them continuously from a cradle to a coffin. There are faces we never forget. There are faces we forget almost instantly. There are a plenty of faces we never see but they exist.

Today we've seen much more faces than people have been able to see in the past. Today we've forced to remember much more faces than our descendants had had to. Some people say that they have no memory of faces. My memory of human faces has seemed to be at good conditions. At least in the mean time. I have no memory of figures. To remember some longer combination of figures costs much more efforts to me than to do the same with much more complicated combinations of noses, eyes, chicks, brows, hair etc..

There is a special unite recognizing human faces in our brains. I wander to know if some animals can remember us after our faces. I know no such a study or a search on it. Have the scientists searched for a similar unite in the brains of our relatives, of a dog or of a cat, for example? Or do any animals recognize our faces after other markers such as an odor or a voice etc. are? Of course, if you want to recognize faces you must have a solid organ of vision. The mole will have a problem with it.

Well, I drew the faces by chance. Some of them may be similar to faces of the people I know, some of them were drawn with no efforts to catch a real resemblance. Mostly I was drawing them the way as they were coming to my mind by chance. There are a few of exceptions among them. I wanted to catch their resemblances by purpose. I can write that all the drawing was rising up gradually and it was a combination of both free associations and purposeful plans.
The Fig.2: Epipactis microphylla. Photo by J. Štěpán.

When I did the drawing, to present an example, two our very popular actors died in that time. I learnt the news from the radio and then I tried to catch their faces in my drawing. Or I drew a neutral face and then I could see that it bore a resemblance of a real person. Or I tried to draw one real face but the result was a resemblance of somebody else.

In one case I caught a resemblance of a concrete man who died many years ago. It was my older colleague at my first employment when I was much younger than today. My relationship with him was friendly but it was no great friendship, I had no idea why my brain evoked just his resemblance.

Because we have met so many human faces in our lives we have tended to ascribe them to both other living beings and dead things. But to tell one bear´s face from another is not easy. Or tell one ant´s head from another (of course, members of the same caste, slavers, for instance). The human face is the most variable of all living beings. While the face elements of other living beings form one mask the man's face elements are very variable (with the exception for the one egg twins or for a chance, of course). Our faces are never the same in a similar way as the lines on tips of our fingers are.
The Fig.3: Goodyera repens. Photo by J. Štěpán.

I think that the man has a face and the rest of members of the animal kingdom bears a mask. The plants have an appearance only, they live their lives with no faces or masks. Maybe this is one of the reasons why we like them. Maybe this is why to draw a plant´s appearance is much easier than to draw a human face.
Try to catch a human face on a paper. A minute change done in the drawing will change its true resemblance. If you draw an animal or a plant you needn´t play with details so much to catch its faithful resemblance. You needn´t draw every leave or every hair. On the other hand there are true masters of the resemblance of the human face. They can catch any resemblance of the human face with several lines only and you can recognize a familiar face immediately. They can catch the substance of the resemblance itself. So we can see that also the specific resemblance of any human face depends on few signs but the most difficult thing is to find them among many other unimportant details.

There´s something what I would name a species face, a genus face, as well as a family face etc.. These faces have a similar character as our faces have. They are variable. The higher taxonomic unite we think of the more specific faces it includes. There´s still the same face (mask) within one species. For example, each polar bear has the same face mask as the other polar bears while the grizzly bear´s mask is different from the mask of the polar bear. We can see that the variability of the face masks increases with a higher taxonomic unite.

We can observe the same phenomenon in the plant kingdom. Because I have no pictures of bears but I own a lot of pictures of rare plants from my country I can document my claims presented above with them. I decided to choose several members of the very numerous family of Orchidaceae (the orchids). I can afford it thanks to my friends, Adam Majer and Jakub Štěpán, who you have known from some of my previous posts.

Well, you can see that I worked through my text to the variable faces not only with the man but also with the other living organisms. To find their resemblances has not been so easy to naturalists in the same way as to find a resemblance of a human face to a painter or a drawer. Whether a scientist or a drawer they do the same: They have still been searching for the substance of the resemblance.

Notices to the pictures:
The photos by A. Majer and J. Štěpán document various face variability within The Orchidaceae family: at the level of the species face, at the level of the genus face and at the level of the family face.
The Fig.1: Two individuals of one species, O. mascula, with the same habits. Of course, we may find some differences between them, too, ´cause nothing is the same but I´m writing about the more marked differences.
The Fig.2: This is an example of the genus face. Though E. microphylla belongs to the Orchidaceae family, its face differs from the Orchis genus obviously.
The Fig.3: G. repens is a next example of the variability at the genus face level within the Orchidaceae family.
The Fig.4: D. sambucina has two faces: the yellow form (variety) and the red form (variety).
The Fig.5: L. cordata is a member of the Orchidaceae family, too, but as you can see his appearance is quite different from the other species here.
The Fig.6: E. atrorubens is an example of the species face. Compare this species to the species on the Fig.2 (E. microphylla). There is a clear difference between the two species of the same genus (Epipactis).
The Fig.7: C. rubra, our rare orchid, finishes a short show of the high genus face variability within the Orchidaceae family.

The Fig.5: Listera cordata. Photo by J. Štěpán.

The Fig.6: Epipactis atrorubens. Photo by A. Majer.

Rostliny mají jenom vzhled, žijí život bez tváří a masek. Možná je tohle jedním z důvodů proč je máme rádi. Možná proto nakreslit vzhled rostliny je mnohem snazší než nakreslit lidskou tvář.
Zkuste zachytit lidskou tvář na papíře. Nepatrná změna provedená v kresbě změní pravou podobu. Kreslíte-li zvíře nebo rostlinu, nemusíte si tolik pohrávat s detaily, abyste zachytili
věrnou podobu. Nemusíte kreslit každý list nebo chlup. Na druhou stranu existují skuteční mistři podoby lidské tváře. Dovedou zachytit jakoukoliv podobu lidské tváře pouze několika čarami a vy ihned rozpoznáváte známý obličej.
The Fig.7: Cephalanthera rubra. Photo by J. Štěpán.

Obr.4: Prstnatec bezový (Dactylorhiza sambucina) má dvě tváře: žlutou a červenou formu (varietu).

  1. Zdenku, moc pěkný post ! Jenom je tam překlep, Goodyera repens je smrkovník plazivý, nikoliv švihlík krutiklas(Spiranthes spiralis). Díky za post ! Ad.
