In The Rocky Labyrinth

Or A Bit of The Table Mountains in Bohemia

I´m going to show you several pictures of a stony maze in this post. I took them during mu trip (10.10.´15) to Kokořínsko the region in my country. I´m no geologist but I suppose that this rocky labyrinth is mostly formed with sandy stone and it is very figurable. Besides, mostly the whole rocky labyrinth has been forested. We were walking a narrow trod path and we could admire various natural rocky statues in the woody terrain. Their creators have been the wind, the water and the time.
It was like to enter a natural gallery where you had to pay no fee, no ticket, where you weren´t forced to open your bags and to turn your pockets upside-down. And in that time of our visit this natural gallery had no too many visitors and then we could enjoy the work of the three sculptors with no fronts before us and crowds behind us as well. The outdoor gallery with its canopy very pleasant to us in that time ´cause the sky was blue and the Sun was shining.

From time to time the path branched out in more side paths disappearing among the rocky sculptures so that we could choose the way in front of ourselves as we wanted to but all they converged in the original one anyway.
As I was looking at the various art works of the Nature my fantasy was searching for their resemblances with real objects. I thought of the Venezuelan table mountains or tepuis in the language of local natives I had read about so many times. Their tops disappear in dense mists and they look like vast flat plains if you see them at a long distance. But if you could land on them you would see that their surfaces are even like a table seemingly only. In fact their terrain is very craggy and dangerous with a lot of bogs, mysterious caves and deep abysses as well. You would wander about very bizarre landscapes resembling stony mazes.

This rest of a table mountain in my imagination is much more accessible than the tops of the right table mountains in South America. Neither you need to climb up to its flat top nor you need to rent a helicopter to reach it. Simply you enter it and pass through it. This top rests rightly on the ground, it is not lifted up high in the misty sky. This Bohemian table mountain seems to be far older than its counterparts from South America. This mountain has already climbed down due to the erosion and to various mountains-formed processes. Just here we could see what might be a fate of the table mountains such as Auyan tepui, Roraima and many others from the borderline between Venezuela and Brasil in a far-away future. Their lost worlds have been descending slowly to our feet.

Well, I could find no sunny pitchers (the Heliamphora the genus), the carnivorous plants of the famous South American table mountains, in my bit of the ancient table mountain, because they´re endemic to them exclusively, i.e. they grow on them only and nowhere else throughout the world. The same holds true for their many other species of plants and animals. But I think that my Bohemian rest of a table mountain has still provided a lot of very interesting niches for many rare species in the Czech Nature. Various crevices and stances as well as vertical walls of its stony statues have been an excellent textbook of various species of the lichens, the mosses, the fungi, the ferns and other members of the plant kingdom. As you can see on my pictures the stony statues are decorated with them very nicely.

I´m not quite sure of this my analogy, if it is precise, but similar thoughts were flying through my mind during my visit of the rocky and woody labyrinth in the Czech region of Kokořínsko.

aneb trocha stolových hor v Čechách

V tomto postu se vám chystám ukázat několik obrázků skalního bludiště. Pořídil jsem je během výletu (10.10.´15) do oblasti Kokořínska v mé rodné zemi. Žádný geolog nejsem, ale předpokládám, že tento skalní labyrint je většinou tvořen pískovcem a ten je velice tvárný. Navíc je tento skalní labyrint převážně zalesněný. Šli jsme po úzké ušlapané pěšině a mohli jsme v tom lesnatém terénu obdivovat rozmanité přirozené skalní sochy. Jejich tvůrci jsou voda, vítr a čas. Bylo to jako vstoupit do nějaké přírodní galerie, kde nemusíte platit žádné vstupné, žádný lístek, kde nejste nuceni otvírat batohy a obracet kapsy naruby. A v době naší návštěvy neměla tahle přírodní galerie příliš mnoho návštěvníků, tudíž jsme si mohli užívat díla tří sochařů bez front před sebou a také bez davů za sebou. Galerie pod širákem s baldachýnem v tom čase pro nás velmi příjemným, protože obloha byla modrá a Slunce svítilo.

Čas od času se cesta rozvětvovala v další postranní pěšiny, které mizely mezi skalními skulpturami, takže jsme si mohli vybírat směr před sebou, jak jsme chtěli, ale stejně se všechny sbíhaly v tu původní. Jak jsem se díval na ta rozmanitá umělecká díla přírody, moje fantazie pátrala po jejich podobnostech s reálnými objekty.

Pomýšlel jsem na venezuelské stolové hory či tepuis v jazyce místních domorodců, o nichž jsem mnohokrát četl. Jejich vrcholy mizí v hustých mlhách, a když je vidíte na velkou vzdálenost, vypadají jako nesmírné ploché pláně. Ale kdybyste na nich mohli přistát, poznali byste, že jejich povrch je rovný jako stůl jenom zdánlivě. Ve skutečnosti je jejich terén velmi kostrbatý a nebezpečný spoustou močálů, záhadných jeskyní a také hlubokých propastí. Toulali byste se velni bizarními krajinami připomínajícími kamenná bludiště.

Tento zbytek tabulové hory v mé představivosti je mnohem přístupnější než vrcholy pravých stolových hor v Jižní Americe. Ani nemusíte šplhat na jeho vrchol, ani si nemusíte pronajímat vrtulník, abyste ho dosáhli. Prostě do něj vstoupíte a procházíte jím. Tento vrchol spočívá přímo na zemi, není vyzdvižen vysoko v mlhavé obloze. Zdá se, že tahle česká tabulová hora je daleko starší než její protějšky z Jižní Ameriky. Zásluhou eroze a různých horotvorných procesů už tahle hora sestoupila. Právě zde jsme mohli vidět, co by snad mohlo být osudem stolových hor jako Auyan tepui, Roraimy a mnoha dalších z pomezí mezi Venezuelou a Brazílií ve vzdálené budoucnosti. Jejich ztracené světy nám zvolna sestupují k nohám.

Ve své troše starobylé tabulové hory jsem nemohl najít žádné heliamfory (rod Heliamphora), masožravé rostliny proslulých jihoamerických stolových hor, neboť jsou pro ně výlučně endemické, tzn., že rostou pouze na nich a nikde jinde na celém světě. Totéž platí pro jejich mnohé další druhy rostlin a živočichů. Myslím však, že můj český zbytek tabulové hory také pořád zaopatřuje spousty velmi zajímavých nik pro mnoho vzácných druhů v české přírodě. Různé štěrbiny, plošky a také kolmé stěny jeho kamenných skulptur jsou vynikající učebnicí různých druhů lišejníků, mechů, hub, kapradin a dalších příslušníků říše rostlinné. Jak můžete vidět na mých obrázcích, kamenné sochy jsou jimi velice pěkně ozdobeny.

Touto svou analogií si zcela jistý nejsem, je-li přesná, ale během návštěvy skalnatého a zalesněného labyrintu v české oblasti Kokořínska mi hlavou podobné myšlenky prolétaly.
