The North West Coastline

To reach the north coastline of the island from the village named São Vicente took a short time. We spent a time in a resting place behind this village as you may recall from my previous narration where its name was not presented. Here I present it additionally. A slanted section of the road issued into a wider horizontal road leading alongside the north coastline. Vendy took a right turn driving our car at the north west direction.

The Fig.2: This is a forward view of the place where we got out of the car to look around the
surroundings. Our next way continued on at this direction. You can see several small houses with
gardens at a tight vicinity of the vertical high cliffs. This view evoked a similar one from my native
Prague, Czech republic, in my brain. If the sea surface to the right upper corner were Vltava the river
then I would think I am in some suburban Prague part of the Vltava´s deep and wide valley. Madeira,

okolí. Naše další cesta pokračovala v tomto směru. Vidíte několik domků se zahrádkami v těsné
blízkosti kolmých vysokých srázů. Tento pohled vyvolal v mém mozku podobný z rodné Prahy.
Kdyby byla mořská hladina v pravém horním rohu řeka Vltava, myslel bych, že jsem v nějaké
pražské předměstské části hlubokého a širokého vltavského údolí. Madeira, severní pobřeží, říjen

Leaving the vast rural valley behind us we continued on in our drive with high cliffs to our left side and with the Atlantic ocean to our right side. The road was an only near strip between the ocean and the cliffs. Taken with the amazing scenery soon we decided to stop the car so that we could examine it in a more detailed way, so that we could enjoy its atmosphere out of the car.

The Fig.3: To me at least there are several interesting things on this picture. First, there is a near stream
coming out of a hole in the rocky wall and falling down through a vertical bed. Maybe it issues into
the sea by some channel under the road. A next interesting item of the photo is the street mark allowing
cars to pass through the tunnel at the speed of 80 km per a hour. At last but not least the system of stony
walls on the left side of the road allowed me to climb higher up above the road. I hoped in the closest
access to the stream by this way but the way was blind. Madeira, the North coastline, on October 2016.

Obr.3: Aspoň pro mne je na obrázku několik zajímavostí. Zaprvé, z otvoru ve skalní stěně vytéká úzký
pramen a spadá dolů kolmým korytem. Snad ústí do moře nějakým kanálem pod silnicí. Další zajímavou
položkou fotografie je pouliční značka umožňující autům projíždět tunelem rychlostí 80 km/h. V neposlední
řadě mi systém kamenných zídek na levé straně silnice dovolil vystoupit výše nad silnici. Doufal jsem v
nejtěsnější přístup k pramenu touhle cestou, avšak byla slepá. Madeira, severní pobřeží, říjen 2016.

I started walking a pavement lined with a low concrete wall not too high above a stony coast which was flooded with sea waves periodically. The Atlantic ocean was absolutely calm at that time. I could enjoy its vastness from the place. As I looked at the sea just in front of me I could see only the sea water fusing with the sky on the horizon. It was and it has always been a hypnotic look to me.

Suddenly I saw a small lizard, it was light brown in color and it ceased in motion near to my feet for a while and then I could catch it up for several times with my smart phone. It was one of many others I saw both in Tenerife and Madeira. I found no substantial differences between the ones from Tenerife and the ones in Madeira. Maybe they are the same species or they might be subspecies of the same genus.

It is a strange experience but when I turned my attention from the Atlantic ocean and I began studying the opposite side of the road I had a feeling of something familiar or so like that. Now while I am writing these lines it is coming to me why my feeling had so a familiar character. There were several ordinary houses with gardens dispersed in a tight vicinity of the continuous mountainous massive stretching out at both directions in parallel with the coastline. The continuous mountainous range resembled a titanic dam facing the Atlantic ocean resolutely. Its vertical walls did not give any chance to an ordinary deadly man to climb them up. Now looking at my photos taken in the place I am realizing where the seeming familiarity came from on my mind. It was as suddenly I would be standing on the bank of Vltava the river in a section of a Prague suburb (Czech republic) and with the river behind my back as I would be looking at similar houses crouching themselves under high rocky cliffs behind them. Of course the closer examination dissolved the seeming familiarity out immediately. Understandably, as soon as you turned your look at the sea again the impression was rightly away because Vltava the river and the Atlantic ocean were incomparable.

As you can see on the fig.2 in places the vertical cliffs fall into the sea water rightly thus blocking the way to continue on. This often obstacle both at the sea and in the mountainous inland has been solved out by the Madeira people with a lot of tunnels, all the island has been interwoven with them. They have made the traffic much more easier throughout the whole island. Surely I am going to devote a special post to them someday in the future. They deserve it I think.

Dosáhnout severní pobřežní čáry ostrova od vesnice São Vicente zabralo chvilku. Nějaký čas jsme strávili na odpočívadle za touto vesnicí, jak si snad vzpomínáte z mého předešlého vyprávění, kde její jméno uvedeno nebylo. Zde ho uvádím dodatečně. Svažitý úsek silnice ústil do širší vodorovné silnice vedoucí podél severního pobřeží. Venda zahnul doprava a řídil auto v severozápadním směru.

Když jsme nesmírné pastorální údolí nechali za sebou, pokračovali jsme v jízdě s vysokými srázy po levé straně a s Atlantickým oceánem po straně pravé. Silnice byla pouhým úzkým pruhem mezi oceánem a útesy. Protože nás ta úžasná scenérie zaujala, brzy jsme se rozhodli auto zastavit, abychom si ji mohli prohlédnout podrobněji a také, abychom si mohli užít její atmosféry mimo auto.

Povšimněte si vinoucí se cesty podél skály vpravo od vchodu do tunelu. Madeira, severní

Rozešel jsem se po chodníku lemovaném nízkou betonovou zdí nepříliš vysoko nad kamenitým pobřežím, které perodicky zaplavovaly mořské vlny. Atlantik byl v tom čase absolutně klidný. Mohl jsem si z toho místa užívat jeho nesmírnost. Jak jsem se díval na moře právě přede sebou, mohl jsem vidět jen mořskou vodu splývající na horizontu s oblohou. Pro mne tohle byl a vždycky je hypnotický pohled.

Je to podivná zkušenost, ale když jsem odvrátil pozornost od Atlantiku a počal studovat protější stranu silnice, měl jsem pocit čehosi důvěrně známého či něčeho na ten způsob. Teď, když píšu tyhle řádky, začíná mi docházet, proč měl můj pocit tak důvěrně známý charakter. V těsném sousedství nepřetržitého horského masivu, jenž se rozprostíral v obou směrech paralelně s pobřežím, byly roztroušeny obyčejné domy se zahrádkami. Ten kontinuální horský řetězec připomínal titánskou hráz, jež rezolutně čelí Atlantiku. Jeho svislé stěny neposkytovaly obyčejnému smrtelníkovi žádnou šanci zlézt je. Teď, když se dívám na fotografie pořízené na tom místě, uvědomuji si, odkud se vzala ta důvěrná známost v mé mysli. Bylo to jako bych stál na břehu řeky Vltavy v nějakém úseku pražského předměstí a s řekou za zády jako bych se díval na podobné domky krčící se pod vysokými skalními srázy za nimi. Samozřejmě, že bližší prohlídka tu důvěrnou povědomost okamžitě rozpouštěla. Pochopitelně, jakmile jste opět obrátili pohled k moři, dojem byl hned pryč, protože Vltava a Atlantik jsou nesrovnatelné.

Jak vidíte na obr.2, místy kolmé srázy spadají do mořské vody přímo a tím blokují cestu v pokračování. Tuto častou překážku u moře i v hornatém vnitrozemí řeší Madeiřané spoustou tunelů, celý ostrov je jimi protkán. Činí dopravu po celém ostrově mnohem snazší. Někdy v budoucnu jim určitě hodlám věnovat zvláštní post. Myslím, že si to zaslouží.
