It Is High Time To Express My Opinion (I)
Introduction

I got this feeling when I found two articles in this Aprel number of our magazine Vesmír (The Universe in English). The magazine has a scientific-popular character and it has been kept at the very good level.
The first article is named "The Environmental Grief", the second one has a name "What to do?" Both the articles treat with the ecological ways of thinking. The first contribution points out to a certain disappointment of some ecologists considering fails in the wild conservation. Despite of all our efforts more and more rare plant and animal species have become extinct and there have been devastating their natural surroundings. The second contribution is a response to the first one. While the first article is more pesimistic, the author of the second one doesn´t see the situation so black.
These articles knocked me to consider my attitude to the ecological thinking and doing as it has been developing since my youth till now.

I must confess that I´ve always sharply perceived something canting in these ecological efforts. As a boy interesting in the Nature I was angry with messages informing of some threatened plant or animal species. I claimed that it was necessary to take an arm and to watch the threatened species in their natural surroundings. I mourned over lost species such as the Tasmanian Tiger, the zebra quagga or the dodo were. I hoped in a new discovery of a small herd of the living Steller´s sea cow somewhere in The Bering´s Strait between Kamchatka and Alaska. Of course, in vain.
I listened to stories of my dady and granddady as it was when they were younger: there were more fish, birds, insects, mammals etc., there were natural niches which, in my time, has already existed only in their memories. I started understanding that nothing lasted forever, it hasn´t been possible to enter twice in the same river as Herakleitos has said. And when something has gone away something new has substituted the previous one.
I wanted to know the scientific ecology and therefore as soon as the Odum´s Ecology were published in the Czech version by Academia the publishing house I bought it in its bookshop. I studied the book very thoroughly. I learnt how mutual relationships among living beings and among them and their surroundings have been complicated, how it has been easy to interrupt these relationships. I read in this book and more ecological textbooks or books with this topic about the succession, about successive stadia occurring naturally in the wild. I could observe this fenomenon year by year in one locality where sundews grew (Drosera rotundifolia L.) near to Radostovice the village. First I visited to the locality with my granddady. The place was covered with clear green pillows of the peat moss with a labyrinth of streems and drains among them. Red coloured sundews grew on the peat moss abundantly together with a lot of other boggy plants. Then I was six or seven years old. Ten years or so flowed away and the appearance of the locality changed. Most of it was covered with high reed, the peat moss formed only several islets with no sundew on them. It was a typical successive process in which the role of the man wasn´t surely omissible.

I´m going to show you my experience with ecological thinking and doing piece by piece. In the end the whole composition consisting of these pieces may help you to understand why I´ve thought as I´ve thought.
I learnt many information about the pollution of the soil, the water and the air. I learnt for example that some conifers in some Czech and Moravian mountains (Jeseníky, Beskydy, Krkonoše) died because of the toxic levels of SO2 in the air for their needles. Then keep watch on the conifers with an arm in your hands!

While I´ve written these lines last number of our weekly magazine called Respekt (Respect in English) informes me that there was a mass mortality of the crayfish in one Czech brook.
While I´ve written these lines every moment I´ve heard messages from the radio telling me that a dead animal has been lying somewhere on a road. The message expresses no regret for the dead animal, it is only a brief warning for drivers.

To be continued.

Nejvyšší čas vyjádřit svůj názor (I)

A když něco zmizí, předešlé nahradí cosi nového.
