The Versailles Gardens (III)

Though I was rather tired after the examination of the Versailles interior (of the right wing of the Palace, in your face to face position to the Palace, see the previous contribution) I had the occasion to refresh myself in the large Gardens behind the Palace.
Of course, before we could enter them we had to buy tickets again. They haven´t been accessible to the public freely. It has been a pity but I must agree with this system. First, to maintain the large Gardens must be very expensive, second, the free enter might lead to their destruction. I can imagine to myself the homeless people or some litterbugs chased by the French Police or by watchers in alleys of the green labyrinth! In short, according to my opinion, the Gardens have been so splended and enchanting that the present regulation system has been fully justified.

Unlike the previous situation when we saw the Palace up on the hill and we had to climb up to it now we were behind it and the vast flat of the Gardens stretched out under the easy slope with the wide stairs before us.
The flat immediately behind the Palace has been a dead level covered with sand with statues, fountains and stony pots with decorated flowers. We crossed the plain and stood on the top of the wide stairs lined with the decorated stony sides. The top of the stairs has given an amazing view over the own Gardens. In fact, you can divide the view from the top of the stairs into three very wide bands: one central band and two side ones. The central band has been the most insistent and its end has disappeared in the distance. The side bands have been much wider than the central one and they´ve drowned in their own green.

I took the first pictures of the Gardens from one of the windows of the right wing. It wasn´t easy ´cause it took to occupy a free place at a window for a while at least.
Then, in the Gardens, I was a bad luck. My camera failed, its battery was exhausted. I´d thought it had had sufficient energy in our hotel the evening before and so I hadn´t recharged it. Fortunately, Vendy lent your camera to me. Thanks to it I could keep taking next pictures in the Gardens too.

We could see distant water surfaces in the central band. They´ve been oval or oblong and framed in stony frames decorated with statues in places, some of them have had statues in their centers. After a short rest on the stairs we stepped down to the sandy path of the central band. Soon we turned to the right band and walked narrow sandy alleys lined with tall hedges. Mostly the hedges, as long as I was able to identify them, have consisted of strictly cut bushy forms of Carpinus betulus. This living material has formed tall traverses among individual interconnected alleys. To roam in this green maze has been very pleasant and very balmy. From time to time you can come upon a bench, a lamp or a statue in the alleys. I can imagine dates of the aristocracy there or Voltaire´s philosophical wondering there or P. Beaumarchais composing in your head some of his plays for the aristocracy´s amusement, maybe just some performance determined especially to the Gardens, to some of their large water ponds as L. Feuchtwanger has writen about it in his famous book The Foxes in the Vineyard (by the way I meant S. Zweig wrongly in the first part of my impressions from the Versailles, of course I meant L. Feuchtwanger, this German writer).

We continued on our walking the alleys of the right band till we arrived at its very end. We returned to the central band by a wider path lined with tall trees. We went to a restaurant near to the first water ponds where the central band has changed in a wider large flat. We were hungry and thirsty but it was closed. No problem ´cause near to it there was next running restaurant. We took our sits in the outside garden and we satisfied our stomachs with the onion soupe, and with some drinks. I think we took some sweet there too.

After our rest as well as refreshment we want to start going to the Small Trianon but it was too late and therefore we decided to stop our examination and to leave the Gardens. We took the path of the central band to the exit. As we were coming back to the stairs we could observe several triggered fountains within some of the ponds, they were triggered only in the late afternoon.

There have been decorated bushes alongside the main path of the central band. Your attention has been attracted to their interesting forms resembling various animals or geometrical three dimensional bodies (spheres, cylinders, cones etc.). The French gardners in Versailles have been real masters in cutting or trimming various tree species. I´d say that the Gardens in Versailles have determined what has been called the garden in the French style. All the green has been submitted to the geometrical order.
I´d like to return to the Gardens in Versailles one day. In the meantime we explored the central band and the right band (with your back to the Palace). The left band has waited for our futurous exploration.

I když jsem byl poněkud unaven po prohlídce versaillského interiéru (pravého křídla Paláce, v pozici tváří v tvář k němu, viz předešlý příspěvek), měl jsem příležitost znovu se osvěžit v rozlehlých zahradách za Palácem. Samozřejmě, že než jsme do nich mohli vstoupit, museli jsme si opět zakoupit lístky. Zdarma nejsou veřejnosti přístupné. Je to škoda, ale musím s tímto systémem souhlasit. Zaprvé, udržovat tyhle rozsáhlé zahrady musí být velice drahé, zadruhé, volný vstup do nich by mohl vést k jejich devastaci. Umím si představit bezdomovce nebo nějaké nepořádníky pronásledované francouzskou policií či hlídači v uličkách zeleného labyrintu! Zkrátka, podle mého názoru jsou tyto zahrady tak nádherné a kouzelné, že je současný regulační systém plně oprávněný.

Na rozdíl od předešlé situace, když jsme hleděli na palác nahoře na kopci a museli jsme k němu vystoupat, nyní jsme byli za ním a ta nesmírná plocha zahrad se rozkládala před námi pod pozvolným svahem s širokým schodištěm.
Plošina hned za Palácem je naprostá rovina pokrytá pískem se sochami, fontánami a kamennými květináči s okrasnými květinami. Planinu jsme přešli a stanuli na vrcholu širokého schodiště lemovaného zdobenými kamennými boky. Vrchol schodiště poskytuje úžasný rozhled po vlastních zahradách. Vlastně si ten pohled z vrcholu schodů můžete rozdělit na tři široké pásy: Jeden centrální a dva postranní. Střední pás je nejnápadnější a jeho konec se vytrácí v dálce. Postranní pásy jsou mnohem širší než střední pás a utápějí se ve vlastní zeleni.

První fotky Zahrad jsem pořídil z jednoho z oken pravého křídla. Nebylo to snadné, protože to vyžadovalo zabrat aspoň na chvilku volné místo u okna.
Potom v Zahradách jsem měl smůlu. Foťák mi vypověděl, vyčerpala se baterie. Večer před tím jsem myslel, že má dostatek energie a tak jsem ji znovu nedobíjel. Naštěstí mi Vendy půjčil svůj foťák. Mohl jsem dál pořizovat snímky i v Zahradách.

Mohli jsme se dívat na vzdálené vodní plochy v dálce. Jsou oválné nebo obdélníkové a zarámované v kamenných rámech zdobených místy sochami, některé z nich mají sochy ve svém středu. Po krátkém odpočinku na schodech jsme sestoupili na písčitou cestu středního pásu. Brzy jsme zahnuli do pravého pásu a procházeli úzkymi písčitými uličkami lemovanými vysokými živými ploty. Živé ploty věsměs, pokud jsem je dokázal určit, sestávají z přísně zastřižených křovinatých forem habru obecného (Carpinus betulus). Tento živý materiál vytváří vysoké přepážky mezi jednotlivými

navzájem propojenými uličkami. Toulání v tomto zeleném bludišti je velmi příjemné a velice uklidňující. Občas můžete v uličkách narazit na lavičku, lampu nebo sochu. Dovedu si tam představit dostaveníčka šlechty, nebo tamní Voltairovo filosofické přemítání či P. Beaumarchaise komponujícího v hlavě některou ze svých her pro zábavu aristokracie, možná zrovna nějaké představení určené speciálně do těchto Zahrad, pro některou z jejich velkých vodních nádrží, jak o tom píše L. Feuchtwanger ve své slavné knize Lišky na vinici (mimochodem, v první části svých dojmů z Versailles jsem nesprávně zmínil S. Zweiga, samozřejmě jsem měl na mysli tohoto německého spisovatele, L. Feuchtwangera).

Uličkami pravého pásu jsme pokračovali dál, až jsme dorazili na samý jeho konec. Ke střednímu pásu jsme se vrátili širší cestou lemovanou vysokými stromy. Dorazili jsme k restauraci poblíž prvních vodních nádrží, kde se střední pás mění v širší rozlehlou plochu. Měli jsme hlad a žízeň, ale bylo zavřeno. Žádný problém, protože vedle ní byla další fungující restaurace. Usadili jsme se ve venkovní zahrádce a žaludky jsme uspokojili cibulačkou a nějakým pitím. Myslím, že jsme si tam taky dali nějaký moučník.

Když jsme si odpočinuli a občerstvili se, chtěli jsme se vydat k Malému Trianonu, ale bylo moc pozdě, a proto jsme se rozhodli naši prohlídku ukončit a Zahrady opustit. K východu jsme šli cestou středního pásu. Jak jsme se vraceli ke schodišti, mohli jsme pozorovat několik spuštěných vodotrysků v některých z nádrží, byly spuštěny teprve pozdě odpoledne.

Podél hlavní cesty středního pásu jsou ozdobné keře. Vaši pozornost poutají jejich zajímavé tvary připomínající zvířata nebo různá geometrická trojrozměrná tělesa (koule, válce, kužely atd.). Řekl bych, že francouzští zahradníci ve Versailles jsou skuteční mistři v zastřihování různých dřevin. Versaillští zahradníci určují to, čemu se říká zahrada ve francouzském stylu. Veškerá zeleň je podřízena geometrickému řádu.
Rád bych se do Zahrad ve Versailles jednou vrátil. Prozatím jsme prozkoumali střední pás a pás vpravo (jste-li zády k Paláci). Levý pás čeká na náš budoucí průzkum.
