An Experiment

I wanted to catch the "smoking" hole of the sporangium of Geastrum sessile found by my son during our trip to Kokořínsko the region (see my previous post). I wanted to catch this effect by my Canon but I learnt that I couldn´t manage it myself. Therefore I asked Sylva, my daughter, for a cooperation.

The experiment was carried out in this evening (10.13´15), the third day after our trip.
I placed the mushroom on a plate with thin water layer. This was done because I relied on hygroscopic characters of the points around the sporangium. As they was becoming dryer under the home conditions they tended to cling to the sporangium. I hoped that water might bend the points back to the surface. But this idea had no practical quick effect, maybe the mushroom was exposed to water for a too short time and we had no time to wait for it for a longer time.

While Sylva was stretching out the points around the sporangium with fingers of her left hand her right hand was leaning a blunt end of a pencil against the sporangium´s body. In the same time my task was to target at the black hole on the top of the sporangium with my Canon´s finder. When I was ready I gave a command to her: "Now!"

Just in that moment Sylva jabbed with the pencil into the sporangium´s body. By the jab the black mouth of the sporangium released a partial little cloud of spores falling down almost immediately and this was why I had to press the release as quick as possible. We repeated this procedure for several times. Received photos are no miracles but if nothing better we can read in them in a similar way as astronomers do it with their photos of the Moon face or many other distant objects in the Universe.

For example, you can see the puff of spores on the fig.1 very clearly to the left from the pencil especially on the white background of the plate´s edging. Unfortunately, its highest part is almost fusing with the darker background. There´s always been something to be improved if we´ve experimented.

Chtěl jsem zachytit "kouřící" otvor sporangia hvězdovky brvité (Geoastrum sessile) nalezené synem během našeho výletu na Kokořínsko (viz můj předešlý post). Chtěl jsem tenhle efekt zachytit Canonem, ale zjistil jsem, že to sám zvládnout nemohu. Proto jsem požádal dceru Sylvu o spolupráci.

Experiment byl proveden tento večer (13.10.´15), třetí den po našem výletu. Položil jsem houbu na talíř s tenkou vrstvou vody. To proto, že jsem spoléhal na hygroskopické vlastnosti cípů kol sporangia. Jak v domácích podmínkách vysychaly, měly sklon lnout ke sporangiu. Doufal jsem, že by snad voda mohla sklonit cípy zpět k povrchu. Nápad však neměl žádný praktický rychlý účinek, snad byla houba vodě vystavena příliš krátce a my jsme neměli čas čekat na to delší dobu.

Zatímco Sylva prsty levačky roztahovala cípy kol sporangia, její pravačka opírala tupý konec tužky o tělo sporangia. Mým úkolem současně bylo zaměřit na černý otvor na vršku sporangia hledáčkem Canonu. Když jsem byl připraven, vydal jsem jí povel: "Teď!"

V tom momentě Sylva šťouchla tužkou do těla sporangia. Tím šťouchancem uvolnilo ústí sporangia dílčí obláček spor, který téměř okamžitě padal dolů, a proto jsem musel stisknout spoušť co možná nejrychleji. Tuhle proceduru jsme opakovali několikrát. Obdržené fotografie nejsou žádný zázrak, ale když nic lepšího, můžeme v nich číst podobně jako to dělají astronomové se svými snímky měsíční tváře či mnoha jiných vzdálených objektů ve vesmíru.

Například na obr.1 můžete velmi jasně vidět baf spor nalevo od tužky zvláště na bílém pozadí okraje talíře. Bohužel, jeho nejhořejší část skoro splývá s tmavším pozadím. Když experimentujeme, vždycky je co vylepšovat.
