The Gems of Our Flora (I)

Orchis purpurea Huds. and O. morio L. in flower again

One friend of mine is a passionate amateur botanist. His name is Adam Majer. He has been focused on the floristics. He has helped with the floristic monitoring of our rare species of the higher plants, i.e. the plants with developed vessel system (Tracheophyta in Latin).

There´s been a very agile e-mail correspondence between us. Almost every Adam´s e-mail has included some photos of various remarkable species in its enclosure. He has undergone many field trips throughout Czech republic from spring to autumn in every year to visit to various localities with occurences of the rare species of our flora. He has collaborated with our professional botanists, too. At least but not last he´s taken pictures of the rare plants in our Nature.

Unlike him my access to the botany isn´t so special, I´d say that my interest in the plant kingdom has always been lesser practical and systematic. My field trips have always been limited to surroundings near to places where I lived or stayed. My access to the botany has been theoretical rather than practical.
This has been why I´ve never seen many plant species in their natural habitats so far. Besides I´ve owned my camera for last several years only so that I couldn´t document the plants by a camera in the time before. But they´ve still been in my memory.
Mainly my theoretical knowledge of the plants has been received by my private studies of many botanical textbooks, atlases and identifying keys of plants.

I´ve liked saying: I´m no botanist, I´m no specialist ´cause I´m an amateur biologist. I´ve always been interested in the common biology. I´ve always been fascinated with this basic question: WHAT IS LIFE? To be able to answer to this question you can´t study the plant world only, you must study the animal world as well as the human one, too. You must acquaint with as many living forms as possible. This allows you to compare and to compose the more exact idea of what is life.

It´s not enaugh to study taxonomic and systematic aspects of the living beings (both the plants and the animals, both the single cellular and the multicellular organisms). If you want to know what I´d wonder to know you must go into much deeper levels of our knowledge of the biological systems. You must devote your attention to many various biological branches ranging from ecology to biochemistry and genetics. You must do it permanently, you needn´t cease to follow any important news in biology. Every new discover can change your great picture of WHAT IS LIFE you´ve tried to build up.

Well, I like the plant world but I´m not specialized in it. It is an inseparable part of the life itself and then I´ve come back to it again and again. Thanks to Adam I can enjoy his photos of various plant species very rare in the Nature of Czech republic. Adam agreed with my proposal to publish his pictures together with my texts in some futurous posts of my blog. I´d like to thank him very much for his kind agreement allowing also you to see something of last rests of the unique plant gems of our Nature.

This post is the first contribution to my collaboration and friendship with Adam Majer.
This time we present two rare species of the Orchidaceae family - O. purpurea Huds. and O. morio L. - in Czech republic. The photos come from Adam´s latest field botanical trips and they confirm that both the two species not only exist in their Czech habitats but they´re flowering this year, too. Naturally, we don´t present any concrete information of localities of the two species.
Unfortunately, Adam sent only one photo of O. purpurea Huds., it is its inflorescence, while its lower flowers are opened the upper ones are in buds yet.
In the case of O. morio L. we can see more specimens with some variability within this species.

The Czech Version

Skvosty naší květeny (I)

Jeden můj přítel je vášnivý amatérský botanik. Jmenuje se Adam Majer. Zaměřuje se na floristiku. Pomáhá s floristickým sledováním vzácných druhů vyšších rostlin, tj. rostlin s vyvinutým cévním systémem (latinsky Tracheophyta, cévnaté rostliny).

Máme mezi sebou čilou e-mailovou korespondenci. Skoro každý Adamův e-mail zahrnuje v příloze nějaké fotografie různých pozoruhodných druhů. Každoročně, od jara do podzimu podstupuje mnoho terénních výletů po celém Česku, aby navštívil lokality s výskytem vzácných druhů naší květeny. Spolupracuje také s našimi profesionálními botaniky. V neposlední řadě vzácné rostliny v naší přírodě fotografuje.

Na rozdíl od něj není můj přístup k botanice tak speciální, řekl bych, že můj zájem o rostlinnou říši byl vždy méně praktický a systematický. Proto jsem až dosud nikdy neviděl mnohé druhy rostlin v jejich přirozeném prostředí. Krom toho vlastním fotoaparát teprve několik let, takže jsem v dřívější době nemohl rostliny dokumentovat fotograficky. Ale v paměti je mám pořád.
Své teoretické znalosti o rostlinách získávám hlavně studiem mnoha botanických příruček, atlasů a klíčů k určování rostlin.

Rád říkám: Nejsem botanik, nejsem žádný specialista, protože jsem amatérský biolog. Vždycky mě zajímala obecná biologie. Stále mě fascinuje tato základní otázka: CO JE TO ŽIVOT? Abyste na tuto otázku mohli odpovědět, nemůžete studovat pouze rostlinný svět, ale také svět živočichů i člověka. Musíte se seznámit s co nejvíce živoucími formami. To vám umožňuje srovnávat a skládat přesnější představu o tom, co je život.

Nestačí studovat taxonomické a systematické aspekty živáčků (rostlin i živočichů, jednobuněčných a mnohobuněčných organizmů). Chcete-li znát to, co bych rád věděl já, musíte se pohroužit do mnohem hlubších úrovní naší znalosti o biologických systémech. Musíte svou pozornost věnovat mnoha rozmanitým biologickým odvětvím, které sahají od ekologie po biochemii a genetiku. Musíte to dělat neustále, nesmíte přestat sledovat jakoukoliv významnou novinku v biologii. Každý nový objev může měnit váš velký obraz o tom, CO JE ŽIVOT, který se snažíte vystavět.

Svět rostlin mám rád, ale nespecializuji se na něj. Je neoddělitelnou součástí života samého a tudiž se k němu stále znovu vracím. Díky Adamovi si mohu dopřávat jeho snímků různých rostlinných druhů, které jsou v přírodě Česka velice vzácné. Adam s mým návrhem zveřejňovat jeho obrázky spolu s mými texty v některých budoucích vstupech mého blogu souhlasil. Rád bych mu za jeho laskavý souhlas, jenž i vám umožní vidět něco z posledních zbytků  jedinečných rostlinných skvostů naší přírody, moc poděkoval

Tento vstup je prvním příspěvkem k mé spolupráci a přátelství s Adamem Majerem.
Tentokrát uvádíme dva vzácné druhy z čeledi vstavačovitých (Orchidaceae Juss.) - vstavač nachový (O. purpurea Huds.) a vstavač kukačku (O. morio L.) - v České republice. Přirozeně neuvádíme žádné konkrétní informace o lokalitách těchto dvou druhů.
Adam bohužel poslal pouze jedinou fotografii vstavače nachového (O. purpurea Huds.), je to jeho květenství. Zatímco spodní květy jsou otevřené, horní jsou pořád v poupatech.
V případě vstavače kukačky (O. morio L.) vidíme více exemplářů s proměnlivostí v rozsahu druhu.
