A Stop at An Old Bridge

On our way to the North alongside the Reunion´s coastline we stopped for a while to see an old bridge. Our sons had already visited to it at their first stay of the island. They wanted to show it to me and Karel and as I think they liked seeing it again, too, after two or three years.

We drove it over to this place. You can see a semi dried out bed of a stream
flowing down to the Indian Ocean. Here the stream looks like innocently but
during heavy raining it can change in a wild acute river. Reunion, nearby St.

Venda went down to it taking a right turn from the road leading higher in slopes above the coastline. He stopped at a large asphalt parking lot next to the old bridge. The place was almost empty but some visitors or tourists appeared during our short pause there. Of course, again it was a good occasion for us the smokers to light a cigarette.

Unlike their previous visit of this place when Venda and Robert could take a walk the bridge from one end to another, now the access to it was prohibited. Despite this Venda and Karel dared to climb the barrier over and they made several steps to its center. I satisfied myself with wandering about the parking lot and photographing the bridge from it as well as the immediate surroundings. This is why Venda got better photos of the historical bridge than me.

The bridge´s history has not been known to me. Here I am limited to a few of fragmentary information our gays said to me. Of course, I can refer my kind readers to The Google´s services with which help they can find more detailed summary of this historic memory. Indeed, our gays drew their knowledge from the same source. To copy any wisdom from the official sources is not my goal. I am putting the accent to my personal experiences and impressions.

Well, as long as my memory does not trait me then the bridge has been built up during The World War The Second to span a wide ravine falling down to the Indian Ocean from one slope to another. Here, higher above the coastline, the way could be more safety than the way leading alongside the ocean. The most interesting thing with the bridge has been that it has been suspended above the ravine with a help of many thick metal ropes. The bridge has seemed to be getting older rapidly and the risk of its collapse has become to be higher and higher. Instead of its complete reconstruction we found it behind the barrier with a warning panel. It has been a question weather it will be conserved as a historical object or it will be destroyed because of the usual lack of money.

Zastávka u starého mostu

Cestou na sever podél reunionského pobřeží jsme krátce stavěli, abychom se podívali na jeden starý most. Naši synové už ho navštívili při prvním pobytu na ostrově. Chtěli ho ukázat mně a Karlovi a, jak si myslím, rádi se na něj po dvou či třech letech také podívali.

Venda k němu sjel pravou odbočkou ze silnice vedoucí výše ve svazích nad pobřežní čárou. Zastavil na rozlehlém asfaltovém parkovišti vedle starého mostu. Místo bylo skoro prázdné, ale během krátké pauzy se tam nějací návštěvníci nebo turisté objevili. Ovšem, že pro nás kuřáky to zase byla dobrá příležitost zapálit si.

The Fig.10: This was the second specimen of a local snail species already I could see in the
island. First Karel noticed it on the wet shadowy stony wall of the bridge´s arc. I could see
the three specimens in total during our stay. Each of them had a big pointed conch of the
size and the sharp what you can see on the picture but they differed from each other in color
of their conchs. Whether it was an inter-species variability in color of the conch or each of
them was a separate species or subspecies remains a mystery to me. Reunion, nearby St.

Obr.10: Tohle byl už druhý exemplář místního druhu šneka, kterého jsem mohl na ostrově
spatřit. Nejdřív si ho všiml Karel na vlhké stinné kamenné zdi mostního oblouku. Během
pobytu jsem celkem viděl tři exempláře. Každý z nich měl zašpičatělou ulitu o velikosti a
tvaru, jaký můžete vidět na obrázku, ale lišily se navzájem barvou ulit. Zda šlo o
vnitrodruhovou variabilitu ve zbarvení ulity nebo byl každý samostatný druh či poddruh

Na rozdíl od předešlé návštěvy místa, kdy se Venda s Robem mohli po mostě procházet z jednoho konce na druhý, teď byl přístup k němu zakázán. Vzdor tomu se Venda s Karlem odvážili zábranu přelézt a popojít několik kroků k jeho středu. Já se spokojil s potulkou po parkovišti a focením mostu z něj a také bezprostředního okolí. Proto Venda získal lepší fotky mostu než já.

Historii mostu neznám. Tady se omezuji na nemnoho útržkovitých informací, které mi hoši řekli. Ovšem, že své laskavé čtenáře mohu odkázat na službu Google, s jejíž pomocí mohou vyhledat podrobnější souhrn o této historické památce. Ostatně, naši hoši čerpali své vědomosti z téhož zdroje. Opisovat jakékoliv oficiální moudrosti není mým cílem. Důraz kladu na osobní zkušenost a dojmy.

Takže, pokud mne paměť nezrazuje, pak byl most postaven během II Světové Války, aby překlenul širokou rokli spadající k Indickému oceánu z jednoho svahu na druhý. Tady, výš nad pobřežím, měla být cesta bezpečnější, než cesta vedoucí podél oceánu. Nejzajímavějším na mostě je, že je nad roklinou zavěšen pomocí mnoha silných kovových lan. Zdá se, že most rychle stárne a riziko jeho zřícení je stále vyšší. Namísto kompletní rekonstrukce jsme ho našli za zátarasem s varovnou tabulkou. Je otázkou, zda bude konzervován jako historický objekt nebo zničen, kvůli obvyklému nedostatku financí.
