It Is High Time To express My Opinion (VI)

Fig 1: I don´t understand why I´m here!
The Nature in Cages

I´m going to devote the sixth part of my eco serial to the human hypocrisy regarding animals and plants in zoological and botanical gardens.
The Nazi concentration camps have been the monsterous nightmare of our history. I would´t be surprised at all if someday in the future people (if they are alive) will interpret our zoos and botanical gardens as the same as the Nazi CC´s have been. To collect and to concentrate anything to one place next to us has been our old instinct. To catch and to prison for our own pleasure has been a strange and selfish deviation.
We´ve gladly claimed that these prisons have been a part of our cultural heredity, we´ve claimed that they´ve been research stations helping to increase our knowledge, we´ve talking to ourselves that animals and plants in capture have felt better under our conditions than in the wild, we´ve argumented these jail like institutions have been very educative to our children.
It is true that since the times of the former menageries this way of the detention has been changing, its standards has been increasingly better and better, the artificial conditions have copied the ones in the wild perfectly except for the one: to be free in my original place in this world.
We haven´t been able to imitate the freedom. We can see it in the best way  with the captured birds of prey for example, because the bigest cage is incomparable with their free space.
From time to time we´ve proclaimed that these animal and plant prisons have been something like the temporary asylums. If we can multiply the captured species, we can reintroduce them to their native habitats.
Fig 2: I´m very beautiful but......

But I know a study published in Živa (our biological magazine founded by J. E. Purkyně in 1853) in which its author showes how both the genotype and phenotype of the Przewalski Horse has been changing in capture, concretely in The Prague Zoo where the breeding of this species has had a long-termed traddition. There has been bred many generations of the Przewalski Horse in the Prague Zoo and this breeding has been documented by exact breeding books. There can be seen in them very well the great differences between the horses of the oldest (original or wild) generation and the ones of the latest one. While we´ve been convinced that the animals and plants in our prisons, so called Zoo´s and BG´s, have still been the same species, it has turned to be a false idea. The captured or prisoned species have been changing both their genotype and phenotype. I´d say that they´ve been domesticating just before our eyes. The longer we breed some species in capture the more it becomes different from its relatives in wild. Well then, is this change reversible? How many generations is needed to get the original species from these domesticated animals back in the wild? How many generations of a domesticated species we will have to do a bodyguard to in the wild than it will become the original species again?
Is it the same number of generations as the number of generations leading to its domestication in capture? I think we don´t know it with certainty. We´ve only been trying to do it. These attempts will require a lot of time than we will be able to say if this way is right or possible.

I´m not going to say: "Let them go!" It would be too simple and naive. This train has already been going too fast and it has been going for a too long time to be stopped or to be possible to get out of it.
We can only try to keep them alive in this absurd reality show in which they´ve found themselves in an involuntary way.
Is there anybody to count how many zoo´s has been in the whole world, in its largest cities at least? As for Czech Republic it has seemed to me that an every larger town would has liked having any zoo or botanical garden.

Our increasing demands for our own space on the Sun have destroyed natural habitats of all other beings having the DNA. They´ve forced them to adapt themselves or to become extinct. We´ve taken them from the Nature to our prisons in capitals, cities and towns of our Non-Nature. We´ve mixed them in incredible stupide ways throughout the world. The well known example for all the ones has been the rabbits introduced to Australia. We´ve also allowed some of them to occupy places where they´v never lived before. And often when we´ve been ready to return some of them (though they´ve been domesticated) to their native habitats we´ve found that they haven´t existed already.

To the pictures: they were taken  in a small menagerie in Zbraslav not too far from Prague.

Vůbec by mě nepřekvapovalo, kdyby jednou v budoucnu lidé (pokud budou naživu) považovali naše zoologické a botanické zahrady za totéž, co byly nacistické koncentráky.
Nejsme schopni napodobovat svobodu.
