On The Cherry on My Birthday Cake
The Part One

At last! First in my life I am coming into a contact with my first
living plants of Ophrys insectifera in wild.
The Fig.1: My first meeting with Ophrys insectifera in the White slopes above Litoměřice-
Pokratice the town on the 22-th May 2016, a day after my birthday.
Happiness has many faces. This is one of them.

This cherry was my last great present a day after my birthday, on the 22-th May, 2016.
My unsuccessful searching for Ophrys insectifera in the slope at Drahobuz on the 13-th May, 2016 was finished in the White slopes at Litoměřice-Pokratice the town. The White slopes rise up above this town as well as above all the surrounding landscape called the Czech garden.
The Fig.2: I´m in the seventh heaven.

The White slopes were recommended to me by my good friend Adam Majer. Just thank to this enthusiastic florist we started going to the White slopes as well as to the slope at Drahobuz the village a week before. Therefore now this is the right place where I would like to thank him for his devoted instructions and advice. It is only his credit that I had the chance to meet my first plants of Ophrys insectifera in wild.
The Fig.3: Ophrys insectifera on the background of my palm.

I was not the first of our trio who found the first plant of this fascinating subtle orchid. To find the first plant took a time. As usually I was walking slowly behind my colleagues and I was taking various photos of manifold plants and views of the pictorial landscape seen from our way climbing up to a long back waiting for us at the higher level. The way to the long back was no steep climbing, its surroundings was characterized mostly by fields and meadows with tall grasses decorated with various field flowers, the meadows from time to time interrupted with islets of trees or bushes. Naturally, my eyes were searching for especially interesting plant species from the very beginning of our enter into this preserved zone. But this side of the long hill gave no promised rare plants.

The turn happened when we stood on the back and started stepping down slowly its much steeper averse slope. The steeper slope had a different character than the previous. It was not only steeper but also it differed from the previous with elements of its flora. It was like to across from an agricultural landscape to a laboratory of the wild Nature. Obviously, this terrain was interwoven with narrow footpaths, i.e. with the traces of often visits of this habitat. I could see often white and grey outcrops with dispersed clusters of bushes, of low grasses and various plants of similar sunny habitats. The steeper slope fell down into a valley hidden under a growth of trees and bushes.
The Fig.4: O. insectifera, two fading flowers in detail.
They are fading away´cause the splashes on them are
white in color already.

Just I was taking a picture of a plant on the top of the slope while my colleagues were stepping it down already. This was that they found themselves in the most interesting zone as the first. I seemed to myself like Achab the captain from the famous book on the Mobby Dick as suddenly members of his crow announced the whales to him. But unlike them my attendants did not shout "there´s blowing!". Their shouts announced: "Hey, come here to me, there´s something very interesting to you!"

"Zdenek, come here to me, I have it I think!" was the first call to my addressee from Vendy balancing lower in the slope. And while I started stepping down to Vendy immediately I heard Robert´s voice announcing something else what was deserving my attention At that time he found himself almost at the foot of the slope under me and Vendy.

And then I saw it. First in my life I had the chance to look at the first living Ophrys insectifera! This first was a tiny low herb with two or three opened flowers. Yes, Adam was right I though to myself. He warned me in one of his e-mails a time before this trip: "To find the first plant of this species in its natural habitat is not so easy."
The Fig.5: O. insectifera, a whole inflorescence.
The youngest open flower (on the top) has its
central splash blue in color while the older flower´s one under it
is almost white. The lowest oldest
flower´s splash is quite white.

When I enjoined the first one I started looking around if there were not its next mates in its surroundings. Instantly I found next four or five plants there. Of course, I had to take pictures of them. I used my Canon till that time only. But here at the first time I tried to test photo-abilities of my new smart phone of the Samsung Galaxy S7 I got as one of presents to my birthday a day before. It turned out to be a crucial tool to get detailed photos of minute parts of various plants. It turned out to be the better camera than my old good Canon. In short, much simpler operation and much better outcomes of my new smart phone won. Since that time I have ceased taking pictures with my Canon.
This is a fascinating example of the advanced technology! The Canon is a specialized tool, it can photograph only. The Samsung Galaxy S7 ability to do photos is only one ability of many and many others inserted in one thin small lamella you can put into your pocket. Universality beats strict specialists.

The same we can observe in the Nature. The most interesting thing with the Ophrys insectifera is its highly specialized and sophisticated floral morphology, anatomy and physiology. This subtle orchid has paid its cruel tax for it. Its adaptability to various habitats is very limited. Paradoxically, this bio-system invested the most of its invention to its sexual reproductive strategy. It is built on an imitation of various lesser or more concrete species of various invertebrates. Various species of the Ophrys genus imitate a different invertebrates with their flowers (a wasp, a bee, a bumblebee or a spider for example).
The Fig.6: O. insectifera, two flowers of the same plant from the previous picture in more detail.

While we were expressing our joy over the plants loudly we were surprised with a strange voice echoing from a path two or three meters above us. The voice belonged to a man of the middle age and it was asking us about if we found an Ophrys. "Yes we did", we answered to him as one man as if we were familiar to him for a long time. Obviously, he was our cup of tea. He knew Ophrys insectifera and when I meant a possible occurrence of next orchid - Cephalanthera damasonium - in this habitat he pointed with his finger to the valley under us and said: "It is growing just over there." For a while he stepped down to us to see our findings and before than he left us he made a notice to yet one orchid presented from this locality - to Cypripedium calceolus. Unfortunately, his message was not good. He had visited to one place within the habitat where he had seen the two plants of this species a time before but now he was there once again and the plants disappeared. He thought that maybe some vandals might pick the plants up and took them with themselves. Then he said hello to us and he continued on in his searching way. Now while I´m writing these lines I think he was a magical botanist. Suddenly he appeared there and a while later he disappeared again.

Well, this is only the first part of my story. You can find its continuation in my next post.

O třešni na narozeninovém dortu
Část I

Konečně! Poprvé v životě přicházím do kontaktu s prvními živými rostlinami tořiče hmyzonosného (Ophrys insectifera) ve volné přírodě
The Fig.7: Our way to the Ophrys insectifera is climbing up slowly and opening
beautiful panoramas of The Czech Garden. This was a view of the landscape
behind my back.

The Fig.8: This was a view to my right hand while we were climbing up and up.

Cesta k dlouhému hřbetu nebyla žádné strmé stoupání, její okolí charakterizovaly povětšinou pole a louky s vysokou trávou dekorovanou různým polním kvítím, ty louky občas přerušované ostrůvky stromů a křovin.
The Fig.9: There was possible to see Pokratice (a part of Litoměřice the town)
under us to the left side from our way up. And the pale blue hill on the horizon
to the right from the middle of this photo is our national symbol, Říp
the mountain.

Strmá stráň spadala do údolí skrytém pod porostem stromů a křovisek.

The Fig.10: Our way up in the front of us.

The Fig.11: A view of the landscape to the right from our way.

The Fig.12: The red and orange flowers belong to Adonis aestivalis, a common field weed
of the warmer areas of my country. Unlike its relative A. vernalis it is not a threaten species.

Totéž můžeme pozorovat v přírodě. Nejzajímavěší věcí u tořiče hmyzonosného (O. insectifera) je jeho vysoce specializovaná a rafinovaná květní morfologie, anatomie a fyziologie. Tahle křehká ordidea za to platí krutou daň.
The Fig.13: This view was taken from the top of the long back before than
we started stepping down its opposite steeper slope. This second side
could become to be our small promised botanic paradise.
