Darwin and a sundew

Ch. Darwin on the picture in the first contribution, as you´ve already known, is from the topic subcycle "The Scientists". All my pictures (both B and W and coloured ones) belong to the one big collection called by me "My World". There are also other subcycles in this collection. I will show you all my pictures here. Of course, gradually.
This picture (from "The Scientists" subcycle too)  inspired one Darwin´s letter to the botanist J. Hooker, in which Darwin, among others, wrote: Now I´ve rather cared of a sundew than of all species in the world.
I liked the phrase. Mostly Darwin is connected with his famous theory on the origin of species,  but he also - as an old and famous man already - was interested in the carnivorous plants (see his book The Insectivorous Plants). He did many interesting observations and experiments just with the sundew (Drosera in Latin), with more species of this genera (Drosera rotundifolia for instant).
First I found this phrase as a citation in the book: The Carnivorous Plants by RNDr M. Studnička.
The picture has this background.

Darwin a rosnatka

Drosera rotundifolia), prováděl mnohá pozorování a pokusy.

The Crazy Anatomist

As a boy I got a book. Its name was Physicians and Magicians. I liked reading in it and there was one chapter devoted to the mediaval scholar, Andreas Vesalius (or Vesal). In his times, as I knew from this book, the dissection of the human body was strictly prohibited by The Church. Vesalius was forced to thieve dead bodies from fresh graves and mortuaries in graveyards. The larger graveyards were often watched by armed monks, so that such actions were deadly dangerous to Vesalius and his companions. From time to time the monks shot arrows from their bows to the intruders. Despite of all dangers Vesalius took the risk and he examined his study material in detail. He was a great pioneer in knowing the human anatomy.
I´ve always admired his curiousness overcoming fear and natural aversion to corpses.

I´ve had the book (a brochure) in my bookcase so far.
There was The Middle Ages, no solid disinfection and the corpses had to smell very bad. Some of them surely were in rotting conditions. He could poison himself with the corpsy poison, he could get any infection, The Church could arrest him.
Was it  always only the power of his longing for understanding helping him to overcome various obstacles? I don´t know. But sometimes it seems to me that he had to have an especial nature, the one as the necrophil must have to be able committing his atrocious delicts. You see, the great personalities of our history are often simplified or idealised in books and other mass media.
But I don´t want to be unfair to him. Indeed, it is well possible that he really followed only the quest for understanding and overcame all difficulties by invention, the common sense and strong will.
Yes, I know, the necrophil - hypothesis is very bizarre. According to it from time to time the mankind could make a progress in knowledge with a help of very specially deviated people. As we´ve very well known, the mankind has been able to make both progresses and failures through exceptional individuals. Vesal (Vesalius) contributed to the human anatomy very positively. In his superstitiuos times it was not easy at all to be succsesfull in the given branch.
