A Watcher of Our Favorite Park

This woody sculpture stands in an asphalt park. The park is situated not far away from our pension. It is enough to cross over the main street to the opposite side and after several meters you are there. The park is further from the main street behind a row of houses alongside it.
Why do I write about an asphalt park? Because there are no trimmed lawns there. The park consists of an asphalt surface interrupted by stony wide circles. If you want you can sit on the stony circular low walls and you can take a rest. This is what we have done quite often during our stay at La Laguna in Tenerife.

That´s strange, he is writing about a park and where is a green in it? you have this question on your mind probably. The answer is simple. This park is a combination of concrete, asphalt, stones and trees. The trees are planted in the centers of the stony cylinders, one up to three trees per one cylinder. The rest of the trees grows out of circles with soil at the same level as the asphalt surface around them and in a row parallel with the row of the taller cylinders. There are both young and old trees in the park, the older and taller ones making the place shadowy. Indeed, you can see it on my picture.
The sculpture is a watcher of the park to me. In fact it is a tree, too. When it went away, an artist took its trunk and carved the watcher of the park from it. Judging from its head with the more elaborated structure I would say that the author had to be an artist of an African origin. Or at least an artist with strong affinities to the African motives and styles.

T

According to my interpretation the head of the sculpture is a symbol of two elements fusing in the watcher of the park. The first element is the tree and the second is the man. A small tree is carved from the top part of the simple trunk. We see its thin trunk and its crown but the crown is covered with a pot like cup and just the cup transforms the small tree into human head sitting on the slim neck. It is a tree and it is not a tree. It is a man and it is not a man. It is the watcher of the park.

Horké reporty z Tenerife (IX)

a/ Strážce našeho oblíbeného parku
